Big crispy tacos
Emily W.

Cali Spartan never fails to blow me away. It's delicious and reliable, and it's always a good spot to take visitors to or dine at with friends. I've been to all of the locations multiple times and they are all fantastic. The parking lot is pretty small for this downtown SJ location compared to the other Cali Spartan locations in the suburbs. They have indoor and outdoor (under tent) seating available. The music is usually pretty loud and sometimes it can get pretty hard to hear people when seated inside. I always get the big crispy tacos here, and I've tried their carne asada, al pastor, fish, shrimp, chicken, cabeza, etc. and all have been delicious! My favorites are probably the carne asada, shrimp, and al pastor. Their regular fries are tasty and crispy, and the loaded Cali fries are amazing too. Their food is just loaded with so many toppings and bursts of flavor. Always a good time eating here. One time I did try their super burrito though and I wasn't a fan of it. It was super plain and seemed to skimp in almost all of the ingredients and had mostly just rice and lettuce. It even had some tiny shredded carrots which was interesting because it looked like a salad mix type and was not the move for a burrito. Wasn't up my alley but I'll continue ordering and loving the big crispy tacos and Cali fries!

These tacos are addicting - every time I think about this place, I start getting hungry. I ordered on the phone prior to pick-up on a Wednesday night, and thank goodness I did because it was so busy. There is extremely limited parking, so be prepared to circle a couple times before you find a spot. The actual store is quite small but has a nice patio area. There's a whole bar dedicated to toppings, ranging from pickled onions to lime wedges. I ordered a bunch of crispy tacos maybe fifteen minutes before arriving and waited an additional fifteen minutes in the restaurant. This was understandable given the crowd. I can't get over how delicious the crispy tacos were. The crunchy shell was the cherry on top of a fantastic, filled taco. I highly recommend al pastor and lengua for the filling. It was a flavor explosion, with savory meat, fresh vegetables, a smoky sauce, and a perfect crisp. The crispy taco is definitely not cheap, but for the amount of food you get, it's worth the price. I devoured all of my tacos and immediately started craving more. I'm looking forward to my next visit!

DONT LISTEN TO EVERYONE - this is the same as the taco truck that is located across the street. Skip the line and eat here LOL! Also there is guaranteed seating, its the parking that is difficult! My go to is always the big crispy tacos or the quesabirria! We love coming here! Its great food for a low price! I also always see people oreering their giant drinks here... maybe one day i will order it! Seems like the spot for college students.

My husband's tacos. This orange sauce adds heat but it's also Smokey and flavorful.

Oh this was so good!! My husband and I went for lunch and while the restaurant is a bit small, we were able to sit down immediately. Our waitress was kind and showed up to take our order within minutes. Once the food arrived the flavors were immaculate. Everything we had was seasoned well. I can't wait to come back to go back. My favorite was the super tacos!

Still a regular at this location and still on support of all the great things you read about their crispy tacos. But back to share something new that I haven't seen anyone mention yet; their tamarindo flavored chamoy rims! Yes you probably heard mention of it but did you know it's their OWN recipe?! I LOVE their chavelas. It's actually the first place I tried it and no wonder I've never liked them anywhere else. Their IN HOUSE CHAMOY rim blends with Pacifico beer, lime and tajin in a way no other location can do and I finally got tired of wondering what brand chamoy they used to I asked and discovered it's their own recipe which leaves me only being able to have it here. I don't mind! But do hope they'll consider selling it! Would be cool to have some Cali spartan merch besides shirts. Wait for food is hit or miss these days. Some days, service is fast! Others it's notable slower. They still have their own parking lot but since this place is so popular, you can't count on always finding a spot. This does lead to people double parking or parking in ways that could block you. Employees will take a picture of cars and go around asking whose it belongs to and if they can be moved. Parking is hard in downtown but the people make it work for their tacos! I don't mind any of this. I'm a certified fan

We came here on a Monday night and got sat down for service. The food here is really good, I have not been here for years and it was better than I remembered. I love all the toppings and the sauces they have and everything tasted so good! I would definitely come back, they have a large variety of foods and drinks here. I recommend this place, I know they have food truck down the street that serves food as well.

Big crispy tacos (pastor and cabeza)

I've been here twice now with my brother and the crispy tacos are EXCELLENT! We were fortunate both times to find parking in the lot out back, but during peak dining hours I'm sure it's harder to find. I've tried the little and big crispy tacos now, their wide selection of meat is excellent and what other spot lets you pick different meats for a set of 3?? Feels rare! The pastor is solid, and cabeza is really tender. I'm curious about their braised beef next time! I also had a large strawberry/horchata agua fresca (32oz!) for only $8, what a steal! I'm not local anymore and this hit the spot so well that I'm considering picking some up next time I fly into SJC.

My friends and I came in on a Sunday afternoon for lunch, and it was relatively busy. I got 3 little crispy tacos--my go-to--with steak as my choice of meat, and it was sooo good. Honestly they never miss with these tacos; I also love their orange sauce as well though it can get spicy. Atmosphere was great with musics in the background. I would definitely come back.

How did I not know about this place sooner? Small lot, friendly service, and excellent food! Got the Cali Crispy Tacos--they have a variety of protein you can choose from. I got the fish, shrimp, and pastor--all delicious! My friends got the lingua and cabeza and also liked what they got. Their horchata is sweet and dairy free. I can't wait to go back!

Anny O.

Mermaid burrito 4/5 - this was decent but nothing amazing. Good amount of protein but I would get a different meat next time. The burrito is huge and good for two people I think Chips and guac were really good. They took a really long time to bring our food out. But the workers are really nice

Needed a California Mexican food fix while in San Jose. Found this promising remedy on Yelp. Small place with both inside and outside seating. Chose an inside table which was nice because they've done a good job decorating for Christmas. Fun, cool vibe with music playing inside. Waitress was quick and good. They have a lunch special with three tacos and a drink for $10. You pick the type and I went with pastor. We also ordered some chips and salsa to hold us over. Good portions and flavor, A+. Tacos were street style and good, not great. Would try something different next time. Would also like to try some of their cocktails too next time too.

There's a reason this place is famous in the bay. love the lively, colorful, decorations, and loud atmosphere families friends, the diversity, that comes here to enjoy saucy, flavorful, Mexican food food. Famous for its super Cali crispy tacos, the crunchy shell with creamy avocado, fat fries, and the superior orange sauce. Insane best quesadilla I've ever had as well, so fat it was like a burrito, good meat, saucey like I like it! Waitresses can be a bit slow because they're constantly overworked.

Vivian T.

You can never go wrong with spartan tacos! It definitely gets super busy late at night as this is a late night spot for many people in the area. Keep in mind they only accept cash so bring cash!! Be sure to try their crispy tacos so good!

I ordered 5 super tacos to share with different meats (pollo, carne asada, al pastor, carnitas and chorizo). The super tacos come with cilantro, onions, avocado, sour cream, cheese and pico de gallo. All the tacos come with homemade corn tortillas - you could tell they were fresh. The tacos are big, not small at all. The carne asada, carnitas and pollo was my favorite. Al pastor was good as well, chorizo was not that flavorful for me. However, they also have 3 types of salsas (green, red and a creamy orange) you can use to help add some more flavor if needed. I plan to come back here to try their burritos and tortas as well next time.

The tacos were good and the tortilla they used was quite thick. The enchiladas had good flavor as well, and I would be interested in trying their enchilada with the verde sauce next time. Their prices have steadily risen over time and they have updated their menu prices as well. One thing that elevated this restaurant to 4 stars is their sauce! The red sauce and green sauce recipe is definitely unique compared to other taquerias. The red sauce bottle helps with the flavor tremendously and without it I would have rated this place lower.

It's been a while, so we decided to check out ZR for a late lunch…read more We found parking easily, but we had to wait a little bit before someone came by to seat us. We were seated at the booth in the back, which I have always admired, but I now realize it has its disadvantages. It is right by the bathroom, which got a bit of traffic on our visit. That's not such a big deal. The bigger concerns I have are: (1) there is no cushioning for those of us with little of our own and (2) you have to sit up fairly straight and if you want to lean against the wall, you're likely to rub shoulders with the wall hanging. Next time I will ask to be seated someplace else as there were two 2-tops outside. The food is always made from quality ingredients and I'm glad to see they are experimenting with pricing and quantity. I did not see mention of their daily happy hour, which was a feature of last year's visit so that may be gone. However, they now have a five tacos platter which offers relatively good value from the menu prices. This would be good for sharing for two people I think. But that is not what we ordered on this visit. My wife ordered two vegetarian (verduras) tacos and the Blood Orange/Jalapeno mocktail. I ordered the huevos rancheros. Unlike Luna, tortilla chips and salsa are not complimentary. So we let our appetites build. Our food arrived fairly quickly, so that was good and we dug in. My wife had ordered two extra eggs (extra charge) to accompany her tacos, and I think she was glad she did. The vegetarian tacos were not terribly generous for the price. My huevos rancheros came in a neatly stacked pile. My wife thought to ask if they had a hot sauce and they do! So we requested their hottest version. It was a welcome addition to the meal (gratis). A little vinegary, but plenty of heat. The mocktail was quite good. Like Spindrift and some other sparkling waters, it is not sweetened, but it had a good amount of strained blood orange juice, and you could taste the fresh jalapeño. I wonder if they have tried adding mint to this as I think it would be welcome. Maybe next time I will ask if they can experiment with me by adding some mint.

It was very loud inside as I think they were making pico and using the multipurpose chopper. It got so loud at one point that we couldn't even talk with each other without having to practically scream. The decoration is beautiful though and feels like you're at a Mexican mom's fancy kitchen. Service was not good at all. We had to wait over 15 minutes to get our order taken and then we watched our food stand on the counter top for another 5 minutes. Once we were served we were never checked up on until the end when we had to flag them down to get the check. I don't think we'll be coming back.

This made it so seamless to reserve here. Our group got there at opening and our table was ready and most of the group was already seated when we got there. Drink orders were flowing as the waitress caught up to me and I got a cafe de olla. We browsed the menu and the more I looked the harder it was to pick one thing. I ended up choosing chilaquiles with a bandera sauce and carne asada as the added protein. The rest of the table got all different types of dishes from carne en su jugo to birria to omelettes. While we enjoyed each other's company sipping on our cafecito I enjoyed the ambiance of the space. Nicely decorated for the holidays. Since it was opening time it wasn't as loud as I imagine it can get in there. The sun did shine on the faces of those facing the windows which was not enjoyable for them. There was no way to cover the sun either since it was coming in from the top windows with no shade. My food came out along with the rest of the plates and we went right in to enjoy them. My favorite chilaquiles was covered in the white sauce. The red and green were good but the white sauce was my favorite. The carne was cooked well but I could taste it wasn't marinated or lacked flavor. I didn't get a knife to cut the meat so it was very difficult to enjoy a piece with my chilaquiles. It was hard to cut with a butter knife. I thought it would be a piece of steak but it was a piece of carne asada. Eggs were scrambled and cooked well. The whole plate was filling, had flavor, and was a good portion. The cafe de olla had a good flavor but a tad sweet for my preference. The space in here is a vibe. A fun place to enjoy large gatherings. I came for breakfast but will update when I come back to visit for dinner. Bathrooms are clean. Staff was welcoming and efficient in taking care of our group. Hospitality was a 10/10. Parking in the am was a breeze but at prime time I can see it being a complete nightmare so plan accordingly. I enjoyed my visit and will come back to check out the dinner menu.

As we cruised by looking for parking, it was clear we had picked a lively spot--buzzing energy everywhere: inside, outside, and even upstairs. We were quickly seated indoors, though on such a beautiful day we assumed we'd be offered outdoor seating. No big deal--we asked, and they happily moved us to a shaded table with plenty of space. Much better. Drinks were first on the agenda: margaritas and a michelada, all refreshing and exactly what we were hoping for. Our server, Michelle, was friendly, attentive, and even shared some helpful tips about perks with our American Express Platinum Card--a nice, unexpected touch. We kicked things off with queso fundido, though a brief mix-up brought us chips and guacamole from another table first. Once we pointed it out, it was quickly handled--but honestly, it looked so good we ended up ordering it anyway. No regrets there--it definitely hit the spot. We hadn't planned on a full dinner, so we went with lighter bites. The tuna tostadas and halibut ceviche were a hit--fresh, flavorful, and perfect for sharing. I went with the tortilla soup, which was good and nicely presented... but didn't quite wow me. I've been on a bit of a tortilla soup tour lately, and this one leaned a little heavy on the tortillas (soaking up too much broth) and had more zucchini than I expected. That said, major points for serving it piping hot--something a lot of places miss--and the avocado was a great addition. One thing worth noting: I didn't catch it until later, but there's a 4% living wage surcharge added to the bill--and it's taxed. That caught me off guard, and I'm still not entirely sure how that works in California. Overall, a fun, energetic spot with great drinks, tasty bites, and solid service. Not perfect, but definitely good enough to come back for another round.

Why have I just tried this Mexican restaurant?! I've always seen their food truck a few years back…read morebefore they began to gain enough finances for brick and mortar store fronts! Yay for mom and pop eats :) Well, I was introduced to this place by my best friend, but I never carried cash to go, so I never tried it until another friend of mine mentioned the Blossom Hill location and them accepting credit card payment! (Yay, but let's not get carried away). I came on a Tuesday evening with friends and saw the place packed! Thats always a good sign~ We each ordered an individual dish to eat and chat. I was intrigued by the burrito bowl and worried it may be small. Jokes on me, it was way more than enough! Don't let the size of the bowl trick you into thinking it's not enough. The avocado was nice and perfectly ripe, the crema sauce drizzle was not overwhelmingly added onto the ball, and the salsa had a nice acid and tomatoey compliment to the beans, meat, shredded lettuce, rice, and cheese! I think this place is pretty solid for the price point and quality. They also have a free for all sauce bar too which is nice! Everything is so spicy, except for the green salsa lol. Servers seemed okay. They didn't really check on us, but it feels like a service yourself kind of place. You grab your own waters, condiments, and sauce here. If you want their chunky mango salsa, you have to flag a server down! However, 1 star is knocked off for the credit card charge, which I'm not even sure what the percentage is. I didn't see a sign at the register or perhaps I didn't look hard enough. I think this should be mentioned on the door and possibly their menu (if it isn't already).
