What in the horchata is this?!? I hadn't been here for a bit, but boy did this establishment go down? Was this just a reallllly bad day? This horchata tasted sour, didn't look appetizing and when the drink sat on the counter it looks like this.... Like what?? And no I did not drink half of this. I don't usually eat spicy food, so I really appreciate how accommodating they are. They're always happy to make it non-spicy for me without compromising the flavor. Pro tip - even if you dine in, you can ask them to put the ceviche in a to-go cup so it's less messy! Located by the Mexican Heritage Plaza, I came here during an event at the plaza about a 5 minute walk. There's a lot of seating. Service was pretty dang quick. This place has been serving the best burritos in San Jose for many years. This is my go to spot for burritos especially if you don't like sauces like other places. The meat is seasoned well and the rice compliments. I usually just use lime or lemon maybe a little salsa but if you don't like either the burrito by itself in my opinion is the best as is. Hard to rate this one, because some items are great while others are straight misses. The good: The seafood was excellent. The shrimp ceviche was delicious and full of shrimp, though my friend's shrimp and octopus cocktail was 95% shrimp. The oysters were also big and fresh, and perfect with the hot sauce they have at the counter. Prices were also pretty reasonable for such large quantities of food. The bad: My shrimp burrito was flavorless. The shrimp were plentiful but plain, and I had to douse every bite in hot sauce to get any seasoning. The chicken nachos were also lacking, and the chicken was oddly sweet. Also strange was the way the nachos were arranged, with guacamole in one corner, cheese in another, and salsa in a third corner. It was like going around a game board, trying to get everything in one bite, but our chips broke each time we tried. It's in a sketchy part of San Jose (definitely watch your step on the sidewalk), but the seafood was very good. Thank you to the gentleman who handed off my sister & I's order- never have I experienced such kind customer service from any of my past experiences with La Costa. LC's asada isn't like anything I've ever had - no bad, just DIFFERENT. The spices they use to marinate/cook most definitely stands out a bit too much for my liking. Burrito itself was big in size and overall tasted fire alongside my sister's homemade jalapeños. Aguachile was AMAZING. My eyes were a lot bigger than my stomach!! The guy asked if I wanted a regular or super and I immediately went with the super and BOY!! That kicked me in the butt. I used to come here as a kid and to me it was such a nostalgic mariscos joint. I came back to try it again years later and unfortunately it was pretty disappointing. The coctel de camaron hardly had flavor with just little pieces of cucumber and tomato. The vibe was also not very kid friendly, they blast super loud music through several speakers. Tacos come out warm with the fish still hot. The fish has a nice crunch. The sauce and slaw are so bright and yummy and just what the taco needs. They are $4 each because they are huge. Two is enough for a meal. The al pastor tacos are also pretty tasty. I like to order one fish taco and one taco al pastor whenever I go. The meat's marinade is nice and it's ready to eat as is. Doesn't need sauce because it's not dry! The regular meat tacos are $2.50 each and regular taco sized. This location is better than the one on Monterey in my opinion. The one on Monterey also didn't have fish tacos when I went, which is a shame. There is a parking lot and street parking here which is very nice and convenient. No indoor dining, outdoor only. Order at the order window and get your food from the pick up window. Everything is under an awning so you will not be in the sun. They also do to-go. Staff is very nice to me here. Our friend who ordered that plate said the meat was good though. They charged us for the super burrito we ordered, but forgot the cheese, sour cream, and guac for the super burrito. It was just rice, beans, and meat. The burrito tortilla was kind of tough as well. Finally, the nacho chips were super stale and the guac was an unnatural bright green color I've never seen before. After driving through some slightly sketchy parts of town, we pulled into a strip mall to find the La Costa's building somewhat in the middle of the parking lot surrounded by covered patio seating. One side was mostly enclosed with heaters in the ceiling with the other side being more open. Simple classic menu (quesadillas, burritos, tacos, tortas, etc) and everything we had was great. The service was quite literally the fastest service I've ever experienced for any food vendor, anywhere. While not a "sit down" restaurant, you know exactly what to expect when you walk up.
