    Chicken karaage
    Warren M.

I visited this location on a quiet Sunday morning. The decor was clean, practical and comfortable. I ordered the shio ramen with extra noodles and chicken karaage. The extra noodle serving was very large, probably as big as the original noodle serving, which is nice because most places only give an additional half serving. The ramen itself was good. I got the shio ramen and it was indeed lightly salted and overall fairly light as far as ramen broths go, so it was as expected. The chashu pieces were very thick and well seasoned. Again, this was a nice surprise as their pork was much thicker than most ramen places I've been to. The chicken karaage definitely had a Taiwanese popcorn chicken vibe. The breading was very light, the chicken was juicy, and the pieces were well seasoned. The spicy mayo had a bit more spice than expected. The reason why I will return was because I appreciated the service. When I sat down, I was the only table, so it was natural for me to feel like the service was attentive. However, the difference maker was that when I was trying to finish the overwhelming noodle portion I ordered for myself, I consumed all the broth. One of the staff were nice enough to bring me a small bowl of broth to help me out. This is one of the few times I've felt a waitress combine attentiveness and empathy to make a big impact at a restaurant. Overall 4/5, will need to try some other broths before deciding if this is a keeper.

Came in on a Sunday during their soft opening and it's a visually nice ramen place but food wise, it's unlikely I come back with so many other adequate ramen places I'm the same plaza. First of all this is a Chinese style ramen place, not Japanese. The broths are much lighter and noodles are thin style only (like the ichiran instant packs). We got the chicken karaage ramen, black garlic ramen and veggie fritters. Karaage ramen was ok at best. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't good. The chicken was really juicy but the batter was soggy as a result. It also wasn't really seasoned much. Ramen broth was light and creamy but was lacking any flavour. The noodles were cooked well though. 2/5 Black garlic ramen was ok tasting but it wasn't really black garlic. It was just over fried garlic. Noodles were good. Char siu needed more time braising because it was chewy. 3/5 Veggie fritters are an afterthought. The inside is kind of soggy because it was either undercooked or the cabbage was too wet. Kind of bland. 2/5 Service was ok but the waitress couldn't remember what we ordered. Food came quickly. For the soft opening they were giving free ice cream but its freezer burned so I wouldn't recommend it. I also got a different flavour than I asked for but whatever, it's free. Overall I wouldn't come back simply because midori (across the plaza) is so much better for about the same price. 2.5/5 but yelp doesnt doesn't do half stars.

Solid 4.5 stars. Very tasty ramen in a quiet medical building. Light years better than the other ramen place in this parking lot. Soup was piping hot, noodles are thin and have good bounce. Veg all great, esp the bamboo shoots. The Cha Shu was not the most tender, but not bad. Free ice cream with ramen :)

Soft opening of new ramen restaurant. I really liked their toppings. Generous portions and tasty pork belly. Free ice cream with each ramen order. I think this may just be for soft opening? Not sure. The ramen noodles tasted more like Chinese noodles than Japanese ramen. The soup could've been hotter. Lemon fruit tea was not good. Very watery and felt like a rip off at $4.99.

The seafood and tonkotsu broth was rich, savory, and full of flavor. It was a little too salty to drink on its own, but perfect for dipping the noodles. The only thing to note is that the cold noodles stayed quite firm even after sitting in the broth for a while, so if you prefer a softer texture, I would recommend asking for hot noodles instead. The soft-boiled egg was also really good, slightly sweet, chilled, and very flavorful. We also tried the Spicy Red Miso ramen, which was not actually very spicy and leaned a little sweet. The broth was pleasant, though my teammate felt there were so many onions and green onions that they covered some of the miso flavor. The chashu, however, was excellent, with a really nice balance of lean meat and fat without feeling greasy. The takoyaki was classic and well done, crisp on the outside, soft in the middle, with generous pieces of octopus inside. The karaage was also very solid, crispy outside and juicy inside, with a seasoning that had a clear ginger and cooking wine aroma. Overall, a very enjoyable meal, especially if you like rich broths and comforting Japanese side dishes.

My friend had the King of Kings as our server said this is one of their most popular choices. I opted for the Spicy Charsu. Now I understand some people can't handle heat but I live off of Purple Tongue hot sauce which is made with some pretty hot peppers. I asked for a level one and the lady explained that the spice level on the Charsu was a whole series of levels higher than the King of Kings. I get that . Give me the heat. Anywho, she was comfortable with giving me 0.5 but said I could make it hotter if need be. Ok, better to start smaller I guess. They put some sauce on the side which I added to my bowl. Personally I found the 0.5 a nice tingle; it was good. Made my nose run. But I'm totally getting the level 1 next time. My friend however tried a sip of my broth, spit it out and said poison poison because of the heat Mind you, his King of Kings was a level 1. Which to me tasted creamy and delicious. I love a good pork bone soup and I opted for the Spicy Charsu because of the pork bone base. I loved the broth. It was perfection. The noodles were so fresh . The portion size was enormous. I kept eating and more noodles appeared. The Charsu had an amazing flavor to it . Smoky and delicious . My friend is a larger man and even he commented on the portion size saying he would be ok with a smaller size as he was so full. Good portions for your money. We also had the Gyoza and the TakoYaki. The TakoYaki was soft and loaded with the delicious sauce. The Gyoza were enormous. We were both 100% satisfied with our visit and will be back for sure.

The concerned server told me that it may be painful, but being the chili head that I am, I gladly took on the challenge. It was a larger bowl than their regular size and my ramen came topped with lots of corn, some mushrooms, bean sprouts and 6 large pieces of chasu. The broth was magma red, but it was not as spicy as I thought it would be. Don't get me wrong, it was spicy but not to the point where it would warrant a warning. The spicy broth tasted like a mix of Buldak sauce and Capsaicin, but didn't have much depth. I finished my ramen, broth and all and enjoyed most of the experience. The least favorite was the chasu and the egg as chasu did not taste fresh, and I could not taste the char on them at all. The egg was over-cooked and under marinated which was disappointing. It's still one of the few ramen options in Durham but can't say it's comparable to the other Kenzo locations.

Reach ten stamps and you get a free bowl of ramen. - The chashu is excellent! My rating is 4.5 stars. I'm rounding down. Last Tuesday, I had my monthly 7 am meeting with a bunch of technical writing peers from around the world. It's quite the meeting that typically lasts for four hours. Luckily, we ended earlier than usual. It meant that my workday ended at around 3:30 pm. It was perfect, as I had a concert to attend several hours later. Normally, I don't do dinner before a concert. I grab a quick bite to each before I head downtown. This time, since I was done work early, I felt that having an early dinner was worthwhile. I drove downtown and parked in a lot that seems to be my usual spot whenever I'm attending a concert at Massey Hall. My original plan was to find an eatery close to the concert venue. I spotted Hokkaido Ramen Santouka steps away. I wanted ramen! I walked in and there was a sign that said to wait. I had no wait time. A woman and the entire staff greeted me. I asked for a table for me and got one. It was great. Seating between tables and diners is close together. You definitely overhear conversations and you can't help it. The man next to me had stretched his foot under my table. I didn't notice that he was in my space until I uncrossed my leg and my foot hit his. I listened to two friends next to me. The man seemed to take charge over what he and his female friend should eat, which was interesting. He gave the impression that he was an expert until the server came over and he had a ton of questions. It's always fun being an observer and listener. I had no choice but to listen to her dating experiences. I got a menu. I knew what I wanted. My server came over and was ready to take my order. I got these items: - Diet Coke - Miso chachu ramen, with bamboo shoot held - Jammy egg and corn as extra toppings The menu doesn't tell you what ingredients you get in each type of ramen. However, it does come with a photo. I asked how large a large bowl of ramen was. My server was great pointing up to a display of three bowls. I went large. The photo indicated that my miso ramen had bamboo shoots. I'm not a fan of them, so I asked that they be omitted. I also added a jammy egg and corn. I got a cold can of Diet Coke. A frosted glass with ice accompanied it. I was happy. I love an icy cold drink. This one was excellent. I loved that it was extra cold. My bowl of ramen had arrived. I was excited to dive in. My miso chachu ramen was delicious. The miso flavour was on point. I drank most of the broth, which speaks volumes on how yummy it was. The chachu was tender and had the best balance of pork and fattiness. The number of slices was generous. The ramen was chewy and perfectly done. I loved the corn and jammy egg. I probably wouldn't have enjoyed my ramen without these two key toppings. They worked nicely with the green onions. What prevents me from giving this place a perfect rating is flagging a server to get me water, or to frankly flag any staffer for something, such as ordering dessert or getting the bill. It took effort and hand-waving to get their attention. It took two tries to get a glass of water with ice. I was happy when I got some after I had finished my Diet Coke. It was equally as cold and yummy. I ordered dessert. The menu is stuck on each table. I asked what ice cream flavours were available. There were two flavours and I went with matcha. It was rich, creamy, and full of strong matcha flavour. The scoop of ice cream was generous. I loved the small spoon, which allowed this dessert to last a lot longer. I asked for the bill. I got a payment machine. I used my credit card to pay and tip. All was great. I used the washroom before I headed over to explore the downtown area. The washrooms are downstairs. It's an older building, so accessibility is an issue. There are two single-stall washrooms. The one that I used was clean. Because it's an older building, the ceiling is low. I am just shy of six feet in height. I made it without hitting my head on the ceiling. If you are six feet and taller, you'll need to duck to make sure you don't bang your head. Staff say goodbye to you when you leave. It was a nice touch, although I don't know what they are saying to me in Japanese. They could be swearing at me and I wouldn't know. I had a wonderful experience here. If you don't mind sitting close to folks and waving your arms like a maniac to get your server's attention, come here. This ramen joint appeared as a Michelin place in 2017. I can see why. The food quality is excellent. (200)

I noticed that they had a lunch special that included three pieces of Gyoza, which could be either pork or vegetable and then it also comes with one of their soft boiled tea eggs All for about $30 after tax and tip a little steep for a downtown lunch outside of the regular financial district, but the Ramen is so good I can't complain. The restaurant inside is everything that I still remember it to be small tight quarters but very cozy.

Soon after we sat down, the restaurant filled up with other patrons which is a good sign. However I also judge a restaurant based on its cleanliness and the washrooms leave much to be desired. If a restaurant's washrooms aren't clean, it gives you a window into how dirty the kitchen and back of house are. The washrooms are in a serious need of a cleaning.
