My wife regularly orders an item that she can't get enough of: the vegetarian omelette without cheese. Her eyes light up when I mention our planning to eat at Nick's! I myself love the corned beef hash and eggs, that comes with just excellent hash browns that could be a meal in themselves. Once I had their chocolate chip pancakes: I was warned by the attentive waitress that their pancakes were large so I ordered only two rather than the full order of three. And, wonder of wonders, the two pancakes were still difficult to finish because they were LOADED with chocolate chips! (not just a few sprinkled throughout and a few on top, as I've had at IHOP). Wow, what a taste sensation! I regularly have brunches with two other couples from my pre-work retirement days, and I've now recommended we eat at Nick's--despite the other couples needing to come from Woodbridge and Springfield!! Nick's is that good. I just wish there was a little more room in the restaurant itself and the parking could be a little easier in their lot. read more

My 13 year old son and I went to Nick's this past Saturday and had a good solid diner breakfast. By that I mean, it is what you would expect of a diner, classic diner food cooked well and exactly as we ordered. Loved the scrapple! The only down side is that if they are busy, as they were when we were there, it may take a while to get your food. There are two cooks at the griddle and they can only cook so fast. The curiosity of this place has increased with every passing. I was looking for a diamond in the rough and this place did not disappoint. Once you slide past the crowded entrance and make your way to either the counter or a table, it is easy to see that this family run place has a feeling of comfort and a place that everybody is known some way or some how but definitely met with a smile. The two seasoned cooks at the grill make their presence known not by the boasting calls of orders, but with the expert and fluid fashion that each ticket is prepared with. You can tell by the smiles of the staff and the customers that these guys are well respected by all. I find that well prepared, simple, and straightforward food is hard to find in this area. That's why it was such a joy to discover Nick's. Don't expect anything fancy. Indeed this place is just a notch above a hole-in-the-wall. No fancy breakfast coffee drinks here. Just regular and decaf made through a filter. But, the coffee is outstanding as is everything else. Nick's serves the standard American diner breakfast, done exceedingly well. The hash browns were outstanding, the eggs perfectly prepared, and the pancakes were large, fluffy and very tasty. Service was polite and prompt, and the owner Sofia was warm and friendly (as long as you wait where she tells you to.) Sit at the counter if you want the additional show of watching the cook whip up breakfast after breakfast on the griddle, assuming you can get a spot at the counter. read more

Nick's Diner, I want to support locally owned businesses in my community, so I really wanted to like you. Your food is okay, average diner food. You close at 1pm on Sundays, and only accept cash. Which is a pain. One day, when I asked for an orange juice with no ice, you brought a glass full or ice, and just a tiny bit of orance juice in it. When I asked to change it for a glass with no ice, you said you were out of orange juice. I would have appreciated if you had been honest about it from the beginning, instead of trying to charge me for the last drops you had in your jar. read more

I first went to Nick's back in 2001. Took the Sunday Post and had an excellent breakfast. This became my routine for the next four years. Then I moved away from the area. Now I'm back in Wheaton and try to get to Nick's as often as possible. Why? Because the food is excellent, the staff is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. My favorite? A feta and spinach omelette with gyro meat. Simply delicious! read more

We have been going to Nick's since it opened. It is a terrific place with friendly people and good food. The staff is always friendly. Someone mentioned that the mother can be a bit overbearing. Sophie is a really neat lady and she runs a tight ship, so perhaps they saw her in action when something was going wrong. It is because of her attention to detail that things work well. Nick and George do a great job on the grill and there is a new Latino fellow (I don't know his name) who sometimes works the grill. They have a large grill and a small stove for omelets. The fry basket is long gone but their home fries more than make up for it. They are cooked right on the grill and they are good. You can watch your roast beef hash or your pancakes taking form, slowly and with care. Their specials are usually outstanding. Even mundane side dishes like canned peas come out well with the spices they use. The meat sauce on their spaghetti is not what you would expect; it is thick and tasty and full of meat. Sometimes they have pastitsio which some people call Greek lasagna. It is always good and filling. Their baked chicken is also quite good. For standard fare I love their chopped steak. The gravy they use is quite good and I usually wind up mopping up the last of it with my bread. Don't be in a hurry when you come to Nick's. If you want something fast, head to McDonald's down the street for some high carb, high fat "food". For not a lot more money you can get a home cooked meal that will fill you up for hours. I am sorry they no longer have their gyro cooker. It went away due to space considerations. The gyro meat they use now is good but nothing like the fresh cooked meat on that cooker. Even so, a gyro and feta cheese omelet can be a wonderful treat. Bring cash. They don't accept credit cards or checks. It's OK to ask for water. WSSC has 33 million gallons of it in tanks nearby. read more

The food was wonderful! My fiance had the big breakfast. It was very good! I would have gotten that, but you can't make substitutions. I wanted to get the scrapple instead of bacon or sausage. I ended up getting two eggs with scrapple and an order of pancakes. It was an additional $1.25 for the banana pancakes. They put a whole banana in the pancakes. Their soda comes in cans, so they do not do refills. It is a cash only establishment. The ham looked amazing. I ordered a ham sandwich for later. I am hoping that their sign about having the best ham sandwich is true. read more

Perfectly acceptable basic breakfast food at a reasonable price. The space is tiny but you can sit at the bar right in front of the grill for an authentic 1950s feel. They only accept cash and you receive a handwritten bill that isn't totaled, so you may need to have your math or calculator skills on point. Attempting to park requires some deft maneuvering because the parking lot is oddly shaped with only a few spots, so it requires some skill in letting people pull out and moving out of the way while people turn their cars around to get in and out the single egress to the roadway. My wife and I ordered eggs over-medium and they were served over-easy (a test that few places pass) and my toast was unbuttered while hers was, which was a little strange. None of that is an unforgivable crime, however, and we'll probably be back. read more

I came back a week ago and the food was TERRIBLE ---- the wait staff was the worst, the one girl was actually sitting at the bar with her head down when I had just ordered juice. Go there. I just read most of the reviews and almost all are 4 to 5 stars and we agree completely. We have been going there for years and love it. As most agree, the home fries and ham are the best we have had. The staff always greets us as we enter and service is always prompt and courteous. If you want a quick, good breakfast with great food, ignore all the negative comments and go there. AWFUL SERVICE, PARTICULARLY LONG PONYTAIL SERVER! If customer service matters to you. Don't go here! We have eaten at Nicks for years. The food is good. The atmosphere is old and loud, but the food is good. Today, our ticket clearly got lost and we waited for an hour for our food. All the tables that were seated behind us were served well ahead of us. Our server just kept saying your food is on the grill. Finally we were served. We ate. Our server came to us and asked us what we had ordered so he could write out a new ticket because ours must have been lost. We said this must be the reason that it took so long. At this point, I just wanted to get going. But when we were leaving another server (woman with long pony tail) said thank you for coming, how was your meal? I let her know that our ticket must have gotten lost, so the breakfast experience was very frustrating. She proceeded to tell me that the tickets are put in the order they are taken. I said I knew how it is suppose to work, but today it didn't happen. She brought a huge attitude and tried to dismiss me -- we aren't robots, I wasn't even your server, etc. Don't thank me for coming or ask me how things were if you don't give a crap. Don't get mouthy and dismissive and act like I am the one with a problem when you behave badly or try to act like you care about customer service. So Nick's lost my business for good. I will share this experience as broadly as possible. When I am telling customer service stories, this will be the one I tell. I will write reviews. Not that I think ponytail server will care, maybe Nick doesn't care. No matter. I'll use my time and money elsewhere where customers matter. read more
