I ate the tomato
Tracey C.

I love the coziness of this place. They're pricey for most things. Enjoy the desserts. I went in today to get lunch for my mom and then something to share w my husband. For the price of everything, I should have bought groceries and made this myself... the focaccia sandwich w/ tomato slices, sliced boiled egg, cheese and avocado. The bread was heavy and bland, although cheese was melted in the press, the sandwich wasn't very hot. Just boring. The lentil veggie soup was watery, salty and just plain mediocre. I also prefer a brownie. That was ok but for $40+ bucks, I could have just not purchased anything at all.

As referenced in Seinfeld episode 77, the famous chocolate babka
James L.

I, like everyone else during COVID quarantines, have spent too much time at home binge watching TV. I've been re-watching classics such as The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and of course Seinfeld. It was during one of these marathon binge watching sessions, that I came across episode 77, entitled "The Dinner Party" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dinner_Party_(Seinfeld)) I won't go into all the details, but the central theme focuses on that most traditional of Jewish breads, the babka. Talk of how the chocolate babka is superior to the cinnamon version (which it is) made me recall the bakery on the block I grew up in Brooklyn which was run by a nice family from Poland. I always looked forward to getting pipping hot potato knishes, lemon pound cakes, but especially the chocolate babka. I thankfully found the Kosher Pastry Oven Restaurant both on Yelp and from a friend of mine who's been coming here for many years. Conceptually the babka is quite simple. It is essentially a braided bread with lots of butter, spices, and chocolate that is interwoven throughout the loaf. In fact, during the last season of the Great British Baking show, there was even a challenge where contestants had to master this pastry (https://london.eater.com/21515590/great-british-bake-off-2020-gbbo-catch-up-chocolate-week-episode-4). Yes, I also was binging on past episodes of the British Bake-off. The version at the Kosher Pastry Oven, while not quite "New York" style, is pretty good. The bread itself is super moist and it is evident that high quality chocolate is used throughout. Cut a slice and you can see the intricate weave of bread and chocolate which indicates the time and care that goes into each loaf. At $15, it's not the cheapest chocolate bread, but I stop by here 2-3 month to pick one up since I love enjoying it on the weekends with my coffee as a treat. TIP: While the bakery makes 3-5 loaves for Friday sale before Saturday Sabbat, I recommend calling on Wednesday or Thursday to special order one to ensure they'll have a chocolate babka available for sale. I've also had other items from the pastry case with my favorites being the heavenly pecan tart and lemon mouse cake. The fresh challah bread is also great for homemade French Toast and just snacking with some butter and marmalade. I've never had any of the savory items, but once COVID lockdowns have been lifted, I'll dine in to sample some of the wares. On most days, you're likely to find Shula Eloul and her son Ron running the front of the house operations, while husband Arie is the back tending to the kitchen. The Kosher Pastry Oven is just the type of local business that I'm happy to support and hopes will continue to thrive for years to come.

We ordered our wedding cake from KPO and were not disappointed. We were directed here by our caterer, Signature Catering, and all our friends agreed, this is the best. We ended up getting a three layered hazelnut cake with chocolate buttercream, and ganache frosting with lovely pink flowers. It was beautiful, and most importantly, it was delicious!!

Stopped in to pick something up and thought to sit for a bit with a double espresso and what looked like a chocolate croissant. This was the most delish chocolate croissant I've ever had. I meant to eat half and wasn't planning on doing a review and here I am writing a review and no croissant to show for it because I ate it all! I'll have to worry about working off these calories later, but the yumminess was worth every single one! I've attached a picture of all of the croissants sitting there so don't think I bought all of these and... I'm getting outta here before I buy another for the road! The double espresso in the glass mug was very nice as well!

Nicoise Salad (Tuna was super dry)
Amanda M.

I had the Nicoise Salad for lunch and I thought most of the salad was great with the exception of the albacore tuna. The tuna was so incredibly dry and chewy that my jaw hurt afterwards. They shouldn't serve tuna if it's going to be inedible. The best parts of the salad was the haricot vert which were crunchy and the seasoned potatoes. Pro tip: once you drive down the street you should veer to the left shopping center. If you go to the right you'll have to turn around, there's not cut through.

Delicious Bakery..... Every time I walk in to the bakery the cakes look so nice. I have ordered cakes for all kinds of events and they where all so delicious. The cakes are moist and well balanced. They are not overly sweet. all their pastries are good. the gluten free brownie is amazing.

A lg for 5.95$ Really

Although the bakery part of this shop was great, friendly and food was fabulous the next door deli really made me feel badly ripped off. Being that it was the beginning of the new year I did not want to make a scene but as I drove home I realized how ripped off and bad I felt. I ordered 2 large containers of tuna fish to take home and was given 2 small containers, about 4 ozs each and was charged 12$ . When at home my husband complained about how dry it was.I did not dare tell him how much I paid. I will continue to shop at the bakery but will never return to the deli.shame on them especially on Rosh Hashanah.

Very good food! Everything is fresh, the fish, the pasta, the salads, the dessert.... Good!! We came here for birth celebration of our friends and the evening was so much fun, we put music in Hebrew and dance, it's feel like in Israel.. Recommended!

Egg Salad sandwich platter

The Kosher Pastry Oven Restaurant has been around since the early '90s and offers non-dairy (Pareve) desserts that are all made in-house. There are mousse cakes (strawberry Bavarian, lemon mousse, tiramisu, chocolate mousse, double chocolate mousse, chocolate hazelnut, and black forest), roladas (rolled mousse cakes), tarts and pies (apple custard, pecan, apple raisin, lemon, chocolate linzer, raspberry linzer, and fresh fruit), pastries and cookies (such as the Napoleon, eclairs, brownies (gluten-free), Danishes, croissants, etc.), and babkas. There's also a cafe menu that offers various breakfast platters, sandwiches, and dinner options (salads, flatbreads, pastas, and fish). The hubs tried their Egg Salad Sandwich (you can opt for either wheat or foccacia - the hubs opted for the foccacia, and this was filled with their homemade egg salad; the foccacia was thin and grilled, and the egg salad itself needed a bit more seasoning and more mayo; it was definitely healthy-tasting, though); the sandwich also came with a side of corn 'salad' (that had some hardboiled egg whites and a vinegar-esque type of dressing). We were a little disappointed, as the croissants and the bagels were all out T____T I chose a selection for dessert box: a Napoleon (the creamed filling was good, but the puff pastry layers in between were a little stale/soggy); the Blondie (an oversized triangular-shaped chocolate chip type of hard scone, dipped in chocolate; this was not too sweet); a Raspberry Linzer (this was super delicious, as it had an almond crust and filled with some raspberry puree); a mini lemon tart; and, a brownie (which also happened to be GF; but, don't let this fool you - it was super fudge-like, chocolate-y, and delicious; it even contained little whole bits of chocolate chips!). The staff were friendly, and any dine-in items are delivered to your table. I'd like to come back and try out the rest of their pastries as well as their bagels and croissants! Plenty of parking available in the shared plaza lot. +Raspberry Linzer :D +brownie :D +Kosher pastries/desserts +friendly staff +ample amount of parking in shared plaza lot

I cannot find the words to describe my experience at KPO! The restaurant is small but very cozy. It is clear that the food is fresh and when it was delivered to my table with a warm smile by Tali- I was sold. I will definitely be returning to try more items on the menu! Thank you KPO!

Driving through, decided to stick my nose in. Very impressed with the artistry and the taste combinations. Staff had good salesmanship and showmanship.

This place was great. It's a combo deli/bakery and it was bursting with life when I went on a Sunday for "brunch". The place was packed because someone called in an order for 500 doughnuts and that took up a lot of time for the kitchen. The place is split with the food counter on the left as you come in and the bakery counter on the right. The seating is very simple with utilitarian chairs and tables. There were several families there for Sunday brunch. There are also spaces outside to sit if it gets too crowded, luckily I was able to snag a place inside because it was just cold enough outside to make I ordered the salmon platter and my friend got the salmon/cream cheese bagel. They give you good salmon for the bagel which was very tender and tasty. I also got a coffee. It took a little bit of time to get the food but not very long considering how many people were in there. The bagels appear to be toasted in a panini press which tastes the same, but this makes them more flat than I am used to. Everything was pretty tasty, so I would definitely come back. The platter comes with extra salmon, a roll and salad so if you aren't in the mood for that stuff then just go for the salmon/cream cheese bagel. The salad could have used some more dressing but it was probably just the distribution. If I go back there then I will just get it on the side. The place is out of the way from the main drag of Silver Spring, so this would be for more special occasions (for me, anyway).

I got a vanilla latte and a dulce de leche latte. The dulce one was my favorite, you can tell its made with good quality coffee! For food, I tried the curry chicken sandwich and the club sandwich. I was also surprised to find that the sandwich came with chips too, yay!

There's also indoor seating right outside of the deli in an open section. The deli has many bakery items, sandwiches and items from the market to purchase for home. I had my eye on this paella pan with cooking kit that was from Spain. I didn't get it and now I'm wanting to go back and get it. I grabbed some honey butter spread. I can't wait to try this because I'm a big fan of honey butter. We got a caramel macchiato and an espresso shot. Both were very good. The espresso was bold and tasty. The customer service was everyone. I'm glad I found this spot near the shops. I'll be visiting often to grab something to eat and drink before hitting the shops.

I paid the amount the young man asked for and I got the receipt and in addition to the sales tax which I expected to pay there was a 4% service fee. There was nothing on the menu or on the front door or on the cash register explaining what this service fee is for. I asked for the manager and he said he had no idea what it was for. I had them void the sale and return my money. Why do businesses insist on charging junk fees that are inexplicable and completely unjustified? If I had known ahead of time that they were charging a service fee I would've been able to make an educated choice whether to dine there. They could've had a sale and happy customer assuming their food was good. But I won't be back no matter how good their food is because I don't like being charged undisclosed Junk fees.
