Solid brunch joint in Silver Spring. Like other reviews have said it's hole in the wall place with not much parking but don't think that stands for he food quality. I don't go to IHOP anymore. When I want breakfast in the Wheaton area, you'll find me at Nick's. There's nothing fake or chainy about this place because it's a true diner, through and through (all that's left is for me to be called "darlin," though I don't think that's going to happen). Crowded/extra extra small - 10 tables max and you often have to move the table for room to sit/get out. Stressful with all the hustle/bustle instead of being able to relax with your meal. Feel rushed. Little parking - ridiculously tight and dirty parking lot SERVICE No substitutes - though why is it hard to give someone sausage patty instead of links? Who does it hurt? And, they are NOT flexible on this. Long wait for food Cash only - nuff said about that inconvenience No paying check at table - so forced to pay and then fight your way back to your table to leave a tip. One of the best diners in the Montgomery County! The scrambled eggs is what I usually use to gauge the level of cooking. Went to Nick's Diner for the first time today! It was great. A local establishment that has been around for God knows how long. Friendly service in a small space. Everyone seemed to be enjoying there job, skirting around each other, scurrying around to provide great food to their customers. Food was served hot and delicious. Everything was made to order. We sat right in front of the grill station and I was fascinated by smooth cooks (if only all teams could work that well together). The prices were right too! Two people for less than $20. read more

I love this place! My Wife and I discovered it Saturday morning. Price is great but most of all the food and atmosphere is perfect. Not impressed. I'm giving two stars solely as our waitress was pleasant. The place is dingy and crowded. But no clue why there was any wait. The food is nothing to write home about. Low end diner food and other diners have much better food. Limited parking and got rushed out due to a small line. Im not a breakfast fan, but this place makes me fall in love with breakfast. Everything is just so darn good. I had the cornbeef hash the last time i went and WOW. Simply amazing. Its crunchy on the edges which is HARD to find. They even have crispy scrapple. Im from the country .. a down south girl... so finding these items and then having them cooked to perfection put me on cloud 9. Sitting at the counter is such entertainment as well to watch them cook. This place was packed out around 9am on a Sunday, so finding seating may be hard. LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS GEM! read more

If you are looking for the American Diner experience for real, Nicks Diner does it well and with love for the food they serve. Especially delicious is Nick's twist on home fries! Real potatoes cut in store and cooked with a bit of Greek immigrant style with sweet bell peppers of different colors onions and spicing that's perfect. You could make a meal of just the home fries, but with great diner coffee endlessly filled for you, staff that pays attention and and want you to enjoy your meal to the fullest, I can not recommend a better breakfast stop in the area. I've been dying to try this place forever. Don't ask me why but all I know I wanted to try this place and after checking out Yelp, I got excited to try it even more and last week I trotted over in morning rush hour traffic to get some breakfast. Looks and feels like something right out of the year 1959. I think the last time the place got a good cleaning was 1959 as well. Mom took care of me at the counter. Perhaps it was an off day but she seemed rather cold and inconvenienced by my presence. The son and daughter seemed very nice although I didn't deal with them. Food came out quickly but was really nothing to write home about. Asked for a side of home fries (the only REALLY GOOD thing I had) and was told they came with the meal....OK great I thought...got the check and was charged for them. Love Nicks, I moved to Silver Spring and was missing the traditional breakfast diners you tend to find around New England (previous residence). Nicks definitely fills that breakfast comfort food void. Definitely looks a bit sketchy but the wait staff is extremely friendly and the food is great and affordable. I live close by and was looking for a new favorite Ma + Pa Diner.....not this place. Nothing here that made me want to come back....... Home Fries bland, pancakes slightly overcooked in my opinion, no refills on soda, cash only. The bathroom through the flap door is disgusting dirty, filthy, and toilet inside the dirty door. it is really bad because opening the door putting germs and washing hands but after washing hands you have to touch the flap door to get out of there to go sit down putting GERMS on your hands. remember people and kids do not wash hands they just skip the sink touching the flap door to go sit down . Good ole fashioned breakfast diner food. First off, make a stop at an ATM prior to your visit since they're cash only. The place is small and crowded: a seat at the counter is optimal. The family that runs this place is Greek, so for lunch options they have some Greek fare in addition to their normal diner food (sandwiches, etc). I had a breakfast sampler, toast, extra bacon, pancake, coffee... (for two... I didn't eat it all myself)... and left very satisfied. The food was hot and tasted every bit as good as it smelled. I will update this review after I eat here again because I ordered the gyro thinking they must be good a "Nick's", but it turned out to be disastrous! Not fresh lamb meat, definitely frozen preformed strips, mild flavor, too much sour scream in the sauce needs more cucumber. I'm from a city full of Greeks, I know how a Gyro should taste and that wasn't it! Im ordering breakfast next time maybe they'll gain another star in my review then. I have driven by Nick's Diner maybe a million times, and this was only my second meal there. The parking situation is a major deterrent for me. This is a very basic reliable diner. I have to say for an old style diner the service is friendly but very slow. My breakfast was not memorable, but I have to say the food was made with care. The coffee is certainly not Starbuck's. I believe it must be the nostalgia and the Retro decor that keep people coming back. Will I be back? An average diner is not a draw for me. read more

I love Nick's! Everything is good here, but the best thing by far are the banana pancakes. The pancakes are nice and fluffy and the bananas are perfectly caramelized. The food isn't fancy, and it will definitely not impress any foodie. However, they offer very solid breakfast items at very reasonable prices (those are the only things I've had at Nick's over the past year or so). Okay, the breakfast potatoes could do with a little bit more crispy bits, but then again none of the Washington DC area diners and/or breakfast places have been able to match the scattered has browns a la Waffle House. But besides that and the "cash only" policy, Nick's is a great inexpensive stand-by if you're in the Wheaton area. Really awesome, no frills place for breakfast. Not too many places like this still exist in Montgomery County in 2012. Corn Beef Hash with 2 eggs and toast for under 7 bucks - you can't beat that. I literally love this place! The food is delicious. And it has a home made taste that it's to die for. The only thing is that it'll get crowed so go on the weekdays. And take cash. Breakfast here was spot on. I went there Saturday morning for some post night out breakfast. Nick and his son were working hard behind the grill cooking up a storm. During the hour or so I was there, I don't think either one of them stopped cooking to take a break at all. The food is flavored well, the scrambled eggs are fluffy and the scrapple tasted like home cooking. The restaurant has been around since 1982 and they seem to still maintain the same level of service and cooking. They have great daily specials at $5.98, so you can get a great meal without breaking the bank. They are cash only but they have an ATM on-site if your cash is running low. The prices are so reasonably priced that I can't even be mad at them for being cash only. read more

Absolutely loved the vibe here! It's a very small space. Went in the winter but the servers made it feel warm and cozy. It was lovely to see the interaction between the waitresses and repeat customers. They are very customer oriented. For the food. Amazing. Everything is cooked to order by the fry cook right behind the counter and in an expedient manner. We went for breakfast but my friend wanted soup and they were able to accommodate with no hassle. Speaking of the soup, it is an in-house recipe and so delicious! I opted for a more traditional breakfast option that was just as tasty. I would advise that you go as early as possible to avoid standing in a line outside waiting to go in. There is very limited seating so it is expected of you to eat and be on your way. The food was solid greasy spoon diner food, but what was shocking was how a check for two breakfasts could possibly add up to $24. We're talking chipped beef on toast with an egg and two English muffins topped with an egg, a piece of ham and cheese. (Plus two coffees).
