Scrapel and Eggs

I had lunch here today. I had the Danny omelet. It was hot and very good. The hash browns were cold and old. The scrapple was very over cooked. The service was pleasant and refilled coffee often.

I love being able to order breakfast all day. This diner is in a small strip mall. The menu is simple. Denny's is cheaper but I can't think of a Denny's in the DMV that has stellar service. The location was convenient. The server was friendly and checked on us frequently. The pancakes are huge. The hash browns were good. The grits could have been better but, it is easy to drown them in butter.

We discovered this place through the Support MoCo Restaurants FB group. Let me start by saying that I LOVE BREAKFAST! I was willing to drive half hour to find out- was it worth the drive. Currently the restaurant is only doing carry-out and curbside. The staff was so nice. In our first time fashion, we ordered a few breakfast items and few desserts. First, the Tater Tot Florentine- with hollandaise sauce on the side. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked and the tater tot on the bottom provided a good texture and vehicle to soak up tge yolk. Next, the Pecan Raisin Toast. It was different in a good way. The pecans were baked into the bread We also got sides of sausage patties and bacon. They did not disappoint. On to the homemade desserts: apple pie, pineapple cake, chocolate cake, blueberry cobbler. All delicious. We look forward to when the indoor dinner is opened to get the full experience.

Food is typical diner food. Service can go either way. We are always the youngest in there (and we are not young!)

It tasted great and was fitting for the season. I also ordered the chicken and waffles and a side of French toast. They have an extensive menu and even have a happy hour. That's kind and nice. I guess during the pandemic the quality and size of their products were not the best. Well I can understand they were going through financial hardship like everyone else, so I gave them a 2nd chance. What I like the most from them is their cakes. Some pastries are good. I haven't tried them all yet. Their quesadillas are really good. I order all my birthday cakes only from them. I'm totally confident they give the best service and products. I can trust them! I recommend them to each person I know that wants a birthday cake. I visit them regularly on Sundays. It's my favorite and only bakery I like. They are very good! I settled on the Chicken Salad Sandwich on Wheat Toast (one of their bread options). I also got a drink called Strawberry/Coconut Matcha. I think it was my second time having this drink and I still enjoyed it. The Chicken Salad Sandwich comes with lettuce and tomato. They also served the sandwich with potato chips and a pickle. The sandwich was good (I appreciated getting the bread toasted) and the chips were fresh. I am not a fan of pickles overall, so I didn't eat that. Finished my lunch with one of their Apple Tarts. Service was good.

I personally don't like it when restaurants will serve their own take on chicken & waffles and it ends up missing the essence of the dish. That essence of what I look for in the dish is the foundation of the food at T&J Waffles. The chicken is crispy and juicy with great sauce options to go with the meal. The waffles are light, airy, and sweet (but not overly sweet). I tend to frequent T&J Waffles whenever they come as the food truck, so YMMV if you eat at the brick & mortar location. That being said, I don't feel like there's an inherent loss of quality by eating at the food truck. My recommendation is to eat the food as soon as possible. Chicken and waffles to me has a very short shelf-life where the crispiness fades away shortly after. I think the best way to enjoy is to dig pretty much right away. Definitely check out the spot if you enjoy chicken and waffles! Side note: they have other options too that look delicious, but I can't not order the chicken & waffles when I go.

I opened up my Yelp app to see if I had bookmarked anything nearby and T&J's Waffles was the first spot that popped up. I didn't know it was walk up location. I was all prepared to sit at a table and have breakfast, but I was already there and I wasn't leaving without food. My dad and I both ordered the classic breakfast platter. It came with two waffles, probably three eggs (we added cheese so that was extra), 4 slices of bacon, and 2 sausage links, and hash brown. The waffles were such a cute shape and they were delicious. I can't confirm this, but I imagine it's their own special batter. They were very generous with the scrambled eggs and I didn't even have to add salt & pepper. I like that there were two meat options. I just wish my bacon wasn't all stuck together to form one piece. Also, the bacon could've been cooked a little more. It was a little fatty and I like a little more crisp. The star of the show was the hash brown. It definitely seemed like it was homemade. This may have been my first time having a homemade hash brown. I'm not sure what they did to it, but here's my guess. It looks shredded potatoes, mixed with green onion, and maybe some cheese, that was packed like a patty & shallow fried. My goodness, I should've ordered some hashbrowns to go so I could eat them for the rest of the week. The platter was so good, I didn't even mind having to eat it in my car. Lol. It was filling & $16 well spent.

There are a couple of seats downstairs and a bit more seating upstairs. My wife ordered a plain bagel, toasted, with lox cream cheese. It was toasted well and the flavor of the spread was good, though we both agreed we wish it had been actual lox with regular cream cheese rather than just a flavored spread. I ordered the pancakes with a side of bacon. Let me start with the bacon: I thoroughly enjoyed it. People always ask, "How can someone mess up bacon?" Trust me, I've had messed up bacon before! But this was cooked perfectly. The pancakes, on the other hand, were a letdown. Given the homemade, historic cafe vibe, I was expecting a customized, from-scratch mix. Instead, they were incredibly generic--they actually tasted exactly like McDonald's pancakes. I was hungry, so I ate them, but they weren't what I expected. Since they were listed towards the top of the chalkboard menu, I had high hopes based on menu placement! LOL. I probably should have gone with a breakfast sandwich instead. Overall, it's a cute spot, but I definitely wouldn't go back for the pancakes.
