I know my Mom likes to come here for the pecan French toast but the service today was AWFUL! They took our order 30 minutes ago; have served tables who arrived AFTER US and we are STILL waiting for our food! Like how does the staff choose favorites in such a short amount of time?? As a black woman, it seems that the white patrons are given extra care whereas my Mom and I were forgotten... Even though they have good pancakes the service is lacking so I might suggest going elsewhere where they treat ALL customers the same regardless of what they look like. I Wish Columbia Had a Diner Like This Place! I used to come here a lot before I moved over a decade ago. I recently tried it out again, and was blown away! The food is absolutely top notch! For example, I usually use a plain iced tea as a metric just to see how clean a restaurant is, but I was shocked at how flavorful it was. Apparently they brew it in-house, and all their other food options are in-line with that concept of attention to detail and quality. I love being able to order breakfast all day. This diner is in a small strip mall. The menu is simple. Denny's is cheaper but I can't think of a Denny's in the DMV that has stellar service. We discovered this place through the Support MoCo Restaurants FB group. Let me start by saying that I LOVE BREAKFAST! I was willing to drive half hour to find out- was it worth the drive. Currently the restaurant is only doing carry-out and curbside. The staff was so nice. In our first time fashion, we ordered a few breakfast items and few desserts. First, the Tater Tot Florentine- with hollandaise sauce on the side. The poached eggs were perfectly cooked and the tater tot on the bottom provided a good texture and vehicle to soak up tge yolk. Next, the Pecan Raisin Toast. It was different in a good way. The pecans were baked into the bread We also got sides of sausage patties and bacon. They did not disappoint. On to the homemade desserts: apple pie, pineapple cake, chocolate cake, blueberry cobbler. All delicious. We look forward to when the indoor dinner is opened to get the full experience. read more

Good food and cool little spot. HOWEVER, my wife and one-year-old went there at 8:30 on a Saturday morning to have breakfast and the entire restaurant only has one highchair. They sat us knowing we had a baby and needed a high chair and then a server came up to us at our table and almost stated proudly that the restaurant has only one high chair so we were forced to leave. This restaurant serves a family community and the fact that they don't provide more than one highchair for a their customers means to me that they prefer not to have young children there. What does a decent highchair cost, $50? And it wasn't as if one or two were temporarily broken. They literally said they only keep one highchair...I mean come on! read more

Love this local spot. Their corn beef hash is one of the best I've had and they have great food overall. The staff is super friendly. The reason for my 3 star review is today 11-6-2022 the owners were yelling at all the staff during their rush time. I understand running a restaurant can be stressful but one of the owners (the lady) was yelling at the older man while he was trying to clean up because he accidentally bumped into her. Then all the waitresses were getting yelled at by her as well. Felt like a very hostile work environment. As an owner you should have a better way to manage your staff instead of letting your frustrations out on them by yelling in front of the whole restaurant. This went on since the moment I sat down till the moment I left. I was not able to enjoy my food because I felt bad for the workers getting yelled at for the entire 1 hour I was there. This lady needs realize you cannot treat your staff like this and on top of that the guests could hear the whole thing. The other owner (man) came out of nowhere after not being in site for 30-40min and went into the kitchen and started yelling at the kitchen staff. I'm telling you that the entire restaurant could hear and feel the tension. This is not professional at all and ruined my breakfast this morning. If you have a problem with your employees, talk to the like they are a human being and maybe not yell at them so the whole restaurant can hear! Such a shame that I've been coming here for 10 plus years and have never seen this side of the owners. Do better please. read more

Dempsey's is my go-to place! Food is good service is friendly and excellent. The prices are very reasonable. The owners are great people caring, honest, and hardworking. COVID-19 has hit them hard they had to let a long time help go and due to restrictions business is down 75% go by do some carryout! they are a place that deserves to be saved. reminiscent of the small-town city cafes of the past. Best breakfast ever, burgers are great and the Cream of Crab soup, EXCELLENT best I have ever had!!! We tried Dempsey's for the first time this morning. Really great food. A ton of variety on their breakfast menu. All four of us tried something different and everyone loved their dish. Portions were big and we all thought we would have leftovers but it was all just too good not to finish. Service was also great. Waitress and other staff were courteous and also funny. Loved this little local diner! Despite the busy and bustling restaurant during Saturday brunch, the servers were so sweet and gave our little one year old girl a lot of air kisses and attention. It is a very family friendly place which is nice because we have a very busy toddler! I ordered the western omelette with ham, onions, and green peppers. My husband got the slim Jim fat boy that comes with pancakes, eggs, and a choice of meat. Brunch is nothing fancy or special...but it's yummy and taste like good old fashion diner food. It was pretty busy for a weekday morning. My friend suggested Dempsey's for breakfast, and I was down for some pancakes and eggs to start off my day. There really isn't anything special about the interior of the place, but it was packed when we visited. The tables & booths on the dining floor reminded me of Sprite's colors -- a bright yellow and green. The waitress we had was very friendly and she tried to make small talk with us. I definitely got the "hometown diner" feel here, which is awesome because some diners don't really interact with their customers. I ordered a Slim Jim Fat Boy off of their menu, which comes with: 2 pancakes, 2 eggs, and your choice of meat. I also got corned beef hash a la carte. Everything turned out okay. My scrambled eggs were a little runny and my pancakes were a bit dry, but overall I had an enjoyable, hearty breakfast. I liked the fact that the corned beef hash was a little crispy on the outside. The only thing I didn't really like about Dempsey's is the amount of single-use packets of butter, syrup, and ketchup they gave us. It would've been better if I could get the syrup/ketchup in a bigger container or bottle because it would've cut down on the amount of trash taking up table space. Dempsey's is a good place to have breakfast, especially if you appreciate a homier feel. Meh. The people were sure nice but the food was unremarkable. The omelet was a bunch of fried stuff (sausage, bacon, peppers, etc.) with an egg blanket on top. Chipped beef was...chipped beef (it's kinda hard to mess up). French Toast was okay but the hash browns weren't browned much. I'll probably give them another shot and try the Chesapeake Benedict but, honestly, I'm not holding out hope. If you live in Ashton, you're eating breakfast at home, 7-11, or Dempsey's. It is a nice relaxed, friendly place. I ordered the eggs Chesapeake - a Maryland take on an old classic benedict served with a crabcake instead of Canadian bacon. Good crab cake, eggs perfect, served with very fresh fruit. It was fairly crowded by today's standards for a weekday morn, but service was exceptionally friendly and prompt. Ate breakfast and chatted with old friends here, which attributed to us overstaying our welcome. Our waitress walked by, mumbled something about us still being there under her breath. Her tactic definitely worked as we left promptly after that. I thought breakfast was decent. Ordered waffles, eggs, bacon. Bacon was especially magnificent. Waffles and eggs were simply waffles and eggs, nothing fancy. Got their hot tea, and I love how it came in a novelty mug on a saucer with a doily. Small diner feel. The place was bumbling with a steady flow of customers. It must be a go-to spot for the locals in the area. I'd return for the sake of supporting a local businesses over a Denny's or IHOP (even though the food is virtually the same). For years we arrived at Dempsey's on TUESDAYS, sometimes on time, sometimes very late with our 90+ year old Dad Joe Orrison. He is an Olney original, living on Muncaster Mill Rd. all of his life except for moving to Marymont Rd. in the 60s to take over his grandparent's home and make it livable of his tribe. Thanks to Tina, Mike, Isabel, Tio Jose', Omar, Libe, so many players who made our very many visits to D's so comfortable. Dad is aging SO very quickly and he is now unable to go 'out for food'....so we bring stuff in....WE MISS YOU WONDERFUL PEOPLE!! ..... May God Bless you amazing folks in your journey onward!! This restaurant has been one of the worst dining experiences in memory. My family (3 of us) came in and had to get to a show by 8pm. We gave ourselves over an hour to order, eat, and leave. There was only one server working the dinner shift, which should have been fine since there were only about 4 tables (10-12 other customers) dining while we were there. The one server seemed to be doing everything while various cooks and kitchen employees were standing around, chatting, joking, and watching TV. Because it took our server so long to finally take our order (over 20 minutes from the time we sat down), we ordered two chicken tenders and fries, and one ordered fries with cheese and bacon thinking these would be the quickest things to come out; we were worried about how long the food would take. The food took about another 20 minutes to come out even though the restaurant was not busy; the cheese/bacon fries came out and the cheese on top was not melted, the chicken fingers were hard as a rock and tasted burnt, and the fries in general had a weird, burnt taste. We scarfed down what we could because we knew we would not have time to stop somewhere else before the show. All in all, it took over an hour to order get some chicken tenders and fries that were improperly cooked, and it cost us $42 before tip. The restaurant was not busy at all. We tipped the server because he looked like he was working hard, but this restaurant does not have its act together. I strongly recommend NOT coming here if you need to see a show since the restaurant advertises its convenience and proximity to the theater. read more
