Lived in Moco on and off for 50 years and passed this place countless times heading to Route 70 at the corner of Georgia avenue and New Hampshire ave. Pulled in, and there is ample parking available and went into the store. It is a true old time country store. The look of the outside matches the look inside. Went back to the grill and ordered two hamburgers. Let me tell you one of the burgers can feed two people. They cook it to order on the grill in front of you and have all the toppings a normal person would want. Everyone was friendly and the service was impeccable. I think I get why this place is so popular - I mean they do a crazy good business both in the tiny gas station shop and over the phone - it's kind of quirky (the shelves are packed with drinks and chips and things to munch on with you food and then like one can of soup! ). It's unique. It's nostalgic. My friend raves about the burgers here and I think burgers are so hard to rate - but if I were to be totally honest - the burger is straight average - every other burger is either above or below, solid 5: seasoned patty, plain grilled bun, standard fixings. Now he swears by the fried egg and onions but I just had lettuce tomato and pickles so maybe I just made the wrong choice ‍ but yeah... Fun outing to Maryland for us, definitely unique and the people running it were wonderful, but I don't need to go back. I had high expectations of Sunshine given the stellar reviews of being known as the best burgers in MoCo, but was surprised and disappointed. The burgers are a single patty, large in size, and cost around $10 each, but were tasteless. The meat was not seasoned at all. Some of the reviews started the burgers can be overly salted, but I would have loved some salt. The only taste the burger had was the ketchup and mustard. The tomatoes, lettuce, and bun at least seemed fresh. What I found odd was when the employee taking the order was using a mirror when speaking to customers rather than turning around to take the order. Perhaps there was a reason for this, but I didn't ask. The store itself is dingy, dirty, and unappealing. But somehow this place is still popular! read more

I had been in here years before to get some bait for fishing, but we finally stopped in today to get a couple of burgers based upon the recommendations of a lot of people and published reviews. The good? Wonderful burgers that lived up to the hype. Large, hot and so delicious. The bad? My family and I look like an average piece of white bread but my wife understands spoken Spanish completely so when two guys came in and ordered their food 5 minutes AFTER we ordered and were told in Spanish that they were going to be moved to the front of the line and don't worry about the the three of us sitting at the table, it kinda left a bitter taste to the visit. Juicy but not that it drips all down your hand. Probably a good 8oz patty. My husband said his bacon cheeseburger was the best he's ever had. The best! Why? Burgers delight in a unassuming little gas station old time corner store! Don't forget to stop by here for a real treat, i only really order the bacon cheeseburger here because it has such a great combination of taste and nostalgic flavor to it. I've been coming here since 1987 although it's been around for a lot longer than that. This place is a local favorite lunch stop for doctors, lawyers, bankers, farmers, roofers, truck drivers, you name it. Not cardiologists though. The establishment has the best burger ever made anywhere, hands down. Fresh half-pound of ground chuck from Mt Airy Meat locker delivered daily. Buns are the same buns used at Burger King for the whopper, unavailable in grocery stores. Secret homemade dry seasoning mix goes on each burger during the cook and can't be beat. Grilled on a griddle that has at least a half century of seasoning cooked into it. This is a very slow-cooked burger and is then sliced in half and wrapped tight in a burger wrap, which allows the burger steam to flavor the bun. Amazingly tender, juicy and flavorful which is what sets it apart. Cheese is American or provolone, your choice. Super friendly staff. Might be wise to call ahead as burgers are cooked and made to order and take about 20 minutes if there is no crowd. My old neighbor, Mr. Ruby, used to drive out to Sunshine for a burger about once a month. He'd get into his old Cadillac and drive from Glen Echo to Sunshine. About a 45-50 min drive. Worth it! He'd get two burgers, one for him and one for his dog. Cash only. Limited seating inside. This very unpretentious tiny store does n fact sell the best bacon cheeseburger I have ever eaten. It is also a nice drive in the country.

I called my bacon cheeseburger order in 15 minutes before arriving. It was a rough looking place around the edges but when I went inside I was greeted by some very kind hearted people with great smiles. The chef, Margarita is one of the nicest people ever. She had my burger ready for me before I even got to the counter. The burger was juicy. Good meat to topping ratio. The sesame seed bun was toasted. It was a well crafted burger. I also got a frostie root beer to drink with it. It complimented the burger well. It truly was the best burger I have eaten in the state of Maryland. I have read, several times, that the Sunshine General Store has the best breakfasts and burgers. I came home after a doctor appointment and suggested to my husband that we go check out the Sunshine General Store. I had missed breakfast and lunch and was hungry for something really good. I was not disappointed. Everything I had read was true. My husband loved his bacon cheeseburger, which was bigger than any burger he had been served anywhere else. And I loved my bacon burger sub. Lettuce, tomato and mayo ... soooo good, and even bigger than my husband's generous burger. At the SGS, there are no french fries (though they do have home fries at breakfast) so we purchased single serve bags of potato chips and bottled soda from one of several drink fridges. Two ladies who take and prepare the orders. They cook on a hot top grill (I think that's what it's called). Everything ordered from the grill (in the back of the store) as well as any other items you pick up are paid for at the front of the store. The ladies at the grill knew immediately that we were "first timers" and very nicely told us what we needed to do to pay for our food and asked if we wanted to eat in or carry out. Eating in, since the store is small, is done at a kitchen table, or one of two small tables, with kitchen chairs. I loved it. It was like being at a friend's house. We will definitely return. One of the ladies told us that we needed to come back for breakfast. I'm thinking we will do just that. read more

After reading all the reviews of everyone saying these are the best burgers in Maryland, i still went in with some skepticism. When i think of the best burgers, gas stations in the middle of nowhere that look like they haven't changed anything since 1970 aren't usually the first thing i think of. Shame on me. Im from the seattle area, and i can't remember the last time i had a burger this good, there, here, or anywhere. To the naked eye, it just looks like a stardard burger with the usual fixins, but my god, was this burger outstanding. i don't know what kind of sorcery they have going on back there, but i was legitimately sad when i got to my last bite. I didn't want it to end. Only minor issues for me were that the burger was a bit pricey and they didn't have much in the way of sides. No fries. The only thing i saw was egg salad for $5.25. The good news is the gas station sells chips, so i opted for those. Normally, these issues would drop a star for me, but the burger was an easy 6 stars. Check this place out. read more

I am a huge fan of burgers and so this has been on my to try list forever - mostly because it constantly comes up as a best place for a burger in Maryland lists and discussions. The place is a bit run down and looks very much stuck in the 1960s. They have a ton of stuff from ice to live bait and lots of options for drinks and chips. But back to the burger - no frills delicious. I ordered two plain cheeseburgers (one for the SO and one for me) and they were incredibly juicy without being greasy. They were thick but not unhinge your jaw thick (cause that is a trend for some reason). And the bun was a good quality with sesame seeds. It was absolutely delicious. Finally tried a cheeseburger at Sunshine and it was good. So, before I get into details, rest assured, if you go here for your custom burger creation you will be pleased with the results. It is a large hand made patty grilled to order and dressed how you like it. If you are into bacon, they put a large portion of thick crispy slices on there. I don't see why everyone goes crazy about the place, but I suppose it's because there are a lot of bad burgers out there. Most places are grilling up 1/4 pound or smaller frozen patties and these are fresh large 1/2 pound monsters. They're an inch thick before cooking, but get pressed down as they go. That said, nothing incredible. Just a solid burger. The store itself is filthy. Only the bare minimum of maintenance and cleaning is attended to. It's not rundown in a cute way, it's pretty gross. You know how you go to some old time stores and you come across unique finds and friendly faces that you don't find in the local franchise? This isn't one of those places. There is nothing cute about it. It's dark, windowless, dingy, and understocked. The drink coolers are addressed but the chip selection (which you are going to get because they don't serve fries) is run of the mill average. Nothing special here. Even the fishing tackle was picked through, maybe because the local lake is closed. I have no idea how this cooking area passes cleanliness inspections. I'll definitely get another burger. The woman cooking was friendly and proud of the food she served. They move a lot of burgers and they're made fresh. Next time I'll get it to-go and enjoy it outside at the old picnic tables, take to a nearby park, or carry out to Waredaca. It's a messy full burger. You're going to need lots of napkins. read more
