Whenever I don't know what to eat, I somehow always end up at the diner lol. I love how this place has kept up with its retro diner aesthetic. It feels like im traveling back in time. The service is beyond great. Staff are friendly and very attentive. They have a wide variety of options to choose from and all day breakfast??!! YES! I love how convenient their hours are because after a night out, my friends and I are always craving a milkshake or some food so this place is especially great for when you have the late night munchies. Short version: It's a 50s-style restaurant with vegan options but just get it to go -- there's no reason to sit down here. PROS * Restaurant is very much what they were clearly aiming for: an updated version of the classic diner. 100% amazing job on that one. * Good food, good selection of higher-end diner fare with healthy options CONS * Price is higher than other diner-type locations in part because of the extras and overall quality. That's fine but even the simpler dishes have a markup. * Service is very mixed. We've had great experiences and we've had experiences that made us want to just walk over to Trader Joes and get some frozen pizza. * Music in the front of house goes from kinda cool to annoying in short order. It's on the loud/intense side. The place was setup by (as far as I can tell) some kind of celebrity chef who had good idea. His face and cardboard cutout are in the restaurant in at least three places and he seems fine. However, we've been coming here for years and I'm just tired of the service being so hit and miss. It's not even the occasional teenager who's got his first job and you gotta give them some rope. Even the people who seem like veteran food service folks just seem really dejected and angry. It's weird when you get the check and the app is like you want to tip 20% right? No, no I don't. I hope the focus moves from whatever celebrity status to the staff. My latest breakfast experience was quite good. I was impressed that for the $11.99 blue plate special, I got a sizeable cheese omelet, 2 pieces of toast, fresh fruit cup, glass of orange juice (large) and an endless cup of coffee. My hub went with the lumberjack breakfast, which I sampled, and it's pretty darn yummy. I love that the syrup was warmed before being brought to the table. Everything was good this morning! We were seated promptly in a sunny window seat. I had the California omelet with salad on the side. I was able to eat half and am taking the rest for later. My dear had a western omelet with potatoes. They use red skinned potatoes for their home fries now. The food was hot and tasty. The menu changes seasonally and there are always fresh options. Representing 2020 in alphabet series, S is for Silver Diner. Been to various Silver Diners in MD & VA over the years. I visited this location at least once, which was in February 2020 to use my birthday deal, which was free entree AND dessert. Six years later, I'll be going again for my birthday deal at the Columbia location (closest to my home now), and Chef Ype will be there tomorrow. Sometime in 2020's, they wanted at least some visits in the year; so you only got the birthday deal if you visited a certain # of times in the year, but I went multiple times in 2025 (all to Columbia, once to Greenbelt location), so I earned my birthday deal for early 2026. This location is a bit small compared with some like Columbia. Service was good though in spite of some crowds on that Saturday at lunchtime. I got some steak, green, mashed potato, & onion straws. I don't like onions, but in fried form they are ok. It was pretty solid steak as was everything else. My dessert was the best part I think. Desserts are a strong category here. We've never visited a Silver Diner before so when my mom's appt ended at lunch time I thought this would make a trip out the house worthwhile. I love that they have a ramp into the place but found it disappointing that they do not have an automatic door opener since mom uses a walker. There was a worker coming back from delivering a to-go order who assisted as with the door. We had our choice of booths or tables and I picked the closest booth to the door. The 1950s decor looked very authentic but I'm surprised the servers don't dress like that too. Oh well, our server named Gloria took our orders for half a BLT with Caesar salad for me and a smash burger with fries for mom. The wait wasn't too long for our food to arrive. My small salad seemed to have a lot of croutons but other than that it was nice and fresh. I took my BLT home to eat during the playoffs. My mom liked her cheeseburger aka smash burger and could only eat half of it. It seemed like Gloria spent more time with her other customers and not us newbies since I had to grab her attention several times to ask for a dessert menu or to-go containers. Once we finally received the menu, we chose the apple pie and world's smallest sundae. Didn't take too long to get our desserts to come. The sundae was just as described but I think it should have had nuts. My mom's pie was really sweet, probably from the drizzle on top but she liked it but couldn't finish it. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I did t feel like we were a nuisance to the server. read more

This is a great place to eat vegan food. My daughter and I had the vegan smash burger with Beyond meat, Just Eggs Benedict, and the mocha cold brew vegan shake. Everything on our table was vegan. And it was all delicious! The pesto really made the Eggs Benedict for me, giving it that great basil flavor. The Smashburger came on a ciabatta bun, which I didn't think I wanted but was super tasty! It included barbecue sauce and vegan slaw. But the best part is the vegan shake. OMG! Really good. There are several other options on the vegan menu too. I go to silver diner more often than I care to admit. I'm surprised I haven't reviewed it since at this point is my "go to/failsafe" spot all over the DMV. The food is decent at all of them. The difference is in the service and the location. I prefer the national harbor/the one across from the nationals ballpark and the one by Tyson's corner. The one in Alexandria and Rockville are decent as well. Some of the others aren't as clean and service isn't as prompt but you will definitely get nice enough ambiance you can talk and enjoy your meal. For a chain, they can't really get a 5 star unless their service is more upscale. read more

This silver diner has been a go to of mine for the last 10 years. I enjoy that they change their menus seasonally so there's always new food to try although i do often tend to go for a burger. the food has always been really good and the service as well. never had to wait for a table and our server checked in not too many times but also enough times where we didn't have to wait to order or pay. while there are a lot of booths in the diner, it never gets too loud that you can't talk to your group nor can you really hear what the other tables are discussing. whole place has a old diner feel along with juke boxes at every table. something i really appreciate about silver diner is that they're open late, past midnight, but also open in the mornings before 7am. and never have we felt rushed to leave after paying our bill. which is really great since often i come here with friends who i haven't seen in a few months and we often spend hours here catching up. read more

Went here twice recently for breakfast and it is a top notch place. The servers are awesome and answered questions about the menu and were quick to offer heaters for the coffee. The feel is that of a classic diner which can be hard to find sometimes. My colleagues from Sweden commented that it look just like the diners in the movies with the red leather booths. The eggs Benedict with smoked salmon was spot on and the pancakes represented the American Diner well. Weill be back again for sure!! read more

To be honest, every time I come to MD, I always stop at this place. The ambiance always is quite nice. I really like it because they have so many options in the menu. The food it's always good. I got the huevos rancheros, my wife got the salmon, my daughter had one of the omelette, and my dad got the lamb chops. It is always good to be back in this place. The orange juice is awesome. I have no complaint for this place. The service was quite right. Most of the waiters speak Spanish and English as well. I will definitely come back anytime soon. read more

Everyone loves the Silver Diner. It's an iconic dmv staple with a cute diner aesthetic. Go there and you will see a mix of everyone -- young families, couples on dates, high schoolers celebrating after a sports game, etc. I appreciate their large menu with healthy and local options. Came into silver diner with my girls. I was not in the mode to eat much but wanted to go out. When we got there we were seated quick. The waitress came and asked what we would like to have. The girls wanted to get appetizer so, I asked her if they had mozzarella sticks. She pointed to the menu and said that the first appetizer and small plates had it. I asked how many does it come with. She said 6, I thought it was perfect 3 for each child, so I ordered it . We ordered cranberry juice, apple juice, and strawberry lemonade. When the appetizer arrived, They were not mozzarella sticks, it was mozzarella, spinach, and artichoke egg rolls. Something the girls do t eat. :( She was attentive and kept coming back to check in on us. I did mention to her that this is not what I ordered and that there was a miscommunication if she could take it back and I order the old Bay fried shrimps you can choose from either 10 or 6. The girls both had the burger sliders for kids ages 12 and under with fries . They loved it and finished it all. Overall, the shrimps were really good. I like both of the sauces. They have a great menu and I appreciate Silver Diner from two angles. One is being vegan - I like their plant-based options and health-conscious menu items. That's pretty rare to find in a diner! Luke Warm Food-But Great Service! Today I treated a friend to lunch @Silver Diner/Rockville. Firstly this "2" Star Review reflects the food. The restaurant was very busy upon our arrival early afternoon. After a few minutes wait we were seated; our server arrived minutes later. I ordered a cheeseburger/fries. My friend ordered fish/chips. Our orders came rather quickly; based upon the busyness of the restaurant. We took a few bites of our meal & realized our food was "lukewarm" not very hot. My friend felt her fish was also over cooked-the outside too browned.Thus not very appealing. We did not complain because we were hungry. It's wasn't the worst meal. Great restaurant...I've been there often. Plenty of parking available depending on the time you go there. The menu offers a great variety of options. Absolutely positively DO NOT order the pastrami reuben. I've had this several times, each time craving it and trying again to see if they got it right. They did not. After multiple tries. The pastrami they use is worse than awful. Each time I get this sandwich, it's the same thing. The meat is inedible. So. Much. Fat. And the actual meat, if you can find it through the fat was unchewable. it was just plain gross. I have contacted Silver Diner regarding this via email. I believe it's the all American which is eggs, meat, potatoes, and toast. They have several blue plate options if you are a senior or looking to save money.
