PROS * Nice menu, some healthy food options * Coffee is above average for the area and better than Starbucks * Love the outdoor area, good service CONS * The emphasis on liquor kinda kills the coffee shop vibe. I get that's way more lucrative than coffee but I mean ... insert the name of the shop. * Food is higher priced for smaller portions and lately has not been good. I most recently ordered the Impossible Burger (which I've ordered before) and it was *not* good. * The big TV running what looks like a looped investor presentation, which is weird and distracting. Pretty good food and pretty large selection for a very in the cut spot! Parking can get a little crazy back behind the restaurant, and seating can get limited if you come prime time brunch hour. But everyone was nice and cashiers were patient even when I couldn't decide what to eat LOL and the line was getting backed up. I finally visited Java Nation! I have a friend who works nearby and we've been long overdue for a catch up. We wanted to go to a new (to us) happy hour, and this was the place he chose. They have happy hour until 6:30 for certain food and drinks. I arrived first, went inside and was greeted by the strong smell of coffee. It's definitely a coffee spot! But they have a full menu, cocktail bar, and scrumptious desserts on display. I saw there was an outdoor area that's probably heated, but I was staying inside where it was cozy. The bar is small and was full at the time so I grabbed a seat at the long high table nearby. Someone came to me almost immediately after sitting down to bring menus. And then about 5 minutes later someone brought water, and then another 5 someone came to take my order. I wasn't ready yet, so I looked over the menu. I knew I was getting the margarita flight, no question. The flight has 4, and they have 4 types of margaritas, easy! Classic, pineapple infused basil, spicy watermelon, and mango passionfruit. You have an option to swap a margarita for their red sangria, which is cool too. When my friend came and we ordered that, we swapped the classic for that. For food we got the margherita flatbread and corn ribs. Let's dive in... Corn ribs: they literally looked like ribs, but made of corn... AWESOME! Loved the aioli that came with them and the seasoning and flavors were on point. Margherita flatbread: loved the sauce, cheese, and crust. Literally zero complaints here and would get it again. Margarita flight: ranked, my favorites were the basil, mango, watermelon, and sangria. The basil was just so pleasant... the mango too, but not quite as much. The spicy watermelon was... REALLY spicy. The best word my friend and I came up with was sharp... it was so sharp! The sangria had a different taste to it... not a bad one, but it just wasn't my favorite. But overall, every drink was great! This was a cool first experience of Java Nation... did I mention the presentation of the food was REALLY nice? Especially the corn ribs. They have a bunch of other dishes on their main menu that seem surprisingly upscale for a cafe. I can't wait to explore more of the menu to check these things out. Came to try Java Nation on Thanksgiving morning and was disappointed. I wanted to try their seasonal salted maple matcha but after ordering they informed me they were out of the syrup, so I settled for a regular vanilla matcha. The matcha was very very watery, as if the ice had already been melted in it, but that wasn't the case. The matcha flavor was faint and underwhelming. I was extremely disappointed in this drink. I also ordered the spinach and feta crossiant which was good. Nothing spectacular but it was a solid crossiant. I do want to go back and try their actual food and maybe a coffee next time but as for their matcha, it was not a hit for me. It's a good place tucked away that was surprisingly packed. read more

I was looking for a cool place to hangout that isn't a bar, and I fou.... Oh wait...it's also a bar. This spot had been on my radar for a minute, but being that it's a little out of my walking range, I hadn't tried it yet - until today. Plenty of parking, which is great. And plenty of room to spread out inside. They have communal seating, and also tables inside and out. You can bring book, or a laptop...the space would definitely work for a casual meeting. and lest you think it's only coffee they have a full bar - incase you need a half-snoot-full at 2 PM. To eat I had a lox bagel (I'm a sucker for smoked salmon). They pickled their red onions. A departure from tradition, but a welcome one, nonetheless. The acid really brightened up the cream cheese, and tempered the salt. Nice move! The menu is fairly expansive for a "coffee joint". Which brings me to my last point... Java Nation is clearly trying to be more than a small coffee house. They have good food, coffee, and wine on offer. They make the short 4 mile drive out of downtown Bethesda kind of worth it. With Java nation having so many locations I was expecting Starbucks type quality, but it was such good coffee. Probably one of the best I've had in Maryland and I am an avid coffee drinker. The food was amazing too. The Latin fusion was quality of Latin food you can't regularly find and it was just a fun menu. Super cute place I appreciate the vibes in general. I like how it's cocktails and food and coffee and pastry. The honey coconut cloud matcha was honestly pretty good! A little expensive but somehow worth it :) good blend of flavors. Not the biggest fan of the default to tip or the music. Also the floor vibrates from either the blender or something. That's really random and weird to mention but it made my feet feel a little weird lol. I was here for a study session and it was ok but I wouldn't come back for that. I visited Java Nation because I thought it was a coffee shop. Upon arrival the restaurant/cafe was bustling. With two areas for seating and a bar. The acoustics in this are not conducive if you want to do any work. I was seated at the bar and between people enjoying catching up with friends for lunch and the orders being yelled I honestly couldn't stand it. On top of that there were only two places to plug anything in. I had to ask if I could unplug the lights at the bar in order to charge my laptop. When I asked if the outdoor patio area might be less noisy they said yes but there were no outlets out there. I ordered a large lavender latte half sweet, it was luke warm and very sweet. Always on point! Java nation is a classic cafe in Maryland. The omelette was delicious with the goat cheese, which wasn't overpowering. It's loaded with spinach which I really liked! We got home fries and sourdough toast which compliments the meal! The crab Benedict was also amazing. You can tell that they use fresh crab meat without fillers. The English muffin was perfect! We got breakfast and did some work at our table. You get a free 90 min wifi access in the cafe. It was a good amount of time to work on somethings! For some odd reason the aftertaste of this matcha comes off a bit chalky, I'm not sure if it's because of the sub Oat, but I will have to pass on the matcha at this place. The turkey bacon was very flavorful, def have to grab this next time. Overall I believe this place is delicious, I look forward to coming back and trying something new, and hopefully I have the help of someone who is in better spirits. I really wanted to love this place. The ambiance was beautiful, the food good. My issue is with the coffee. The first time I went there I got a latte and was satisfied. The second time I ordered a cafe con leche and it tasted awful. I even had others at my table try it to see if it was just my taste buds, but everyone agreed that it tasted like a bad batch, kind of sour mixed with bitterness. I am from Florida, cafe con leche is a staple at most places down there, so I thought I knew what it should taste like. I was going to throw it away and order a new one but my husband took it to the front and asked them to remake it. The manager said it would taste the same and suggested that maybe i just didn't know what a cafe con leche was (a bit rudely) and suggested they make me a latte instead. My husband agreed, and before hanging him the latte, manager went up to him and told him he had to pay the 30 cent difference since a latte is more expensive. He of course obliged, but I just thought the whole situation was handled poorly. The new latte tasted great. I returned a third time after that and again ordered a latte and a blueberry muffin. The muffin was delicious. The latte again tasted off. I didn't ask for a new one because of how my husband was treated the last time. I don't think I will be returning. read more

Woo lawd, what a delicious establishment this is! So, my sister and her husband recommended this joint to me. They were very persistent about me trying the breakfast here. They recommended the pancakes! So, I took them up on it! This place is chic and very hip, from the inside out. You don't find cafe's like this on the East coast, unless you are in Maine that is. I have been to many breakfast cafe's, but this reminded me of the ones i've visited in Big Sur, SoCal, Mexico, and Costa Rica! Warm and vibrant! I was greeted by warm and welcoming customer service, and seated promptly. I placed an order for blueberry pancakes and applewood bacon! It came out about 8 minutes later. The pancakes were topped with blueberries, and whipped cream. Syrup was also served on the side. The applewood bacon came too and I sliced the pancakes up to perfection! Upon the first bite, I could taste the fluffiness of the pancakes coupled with the sweet and delicious medley! My goodness!!! Each bite felt like a burst of sunshine for my taste buds! The bacon was crisp yet smooth, and beyond flavorful! I had a cup of green tea on the side to wash it all down. This meal gave me a great deal of joy! I will be back to try more breakfast! I've always enjoyed the Kentlands location of Java Nation but this was the first time I've visited the one next to Pike and Rose! It definitely is a lot busier and there's a lot of people working remotely. There is a large patio area but it was way too cold so my friend and I opted to wait around for a table inside! The spinach and cheese croissant was wonderful, I usually avoid croissants because they're too greasy but did not run into that problem with this one. My only qualm I had was with the golden milk. I love golden milk as a healthy non-caffeinated option, but this one was way too clumpy and I was getting just straight turmeric in my mouth. Yeah, Java Nation is just the kind of neighborhood place that the north Bethesda neighborhood deserves. It's a small chain but feels so homey. Don't let the "Java" fool you - this place is so much more than a coffee shop. Wonderful selection of menu items I'm most partial to the manzanella salad with various toppings such as salmon, shrimp or steak. Super fresh ingredients in a light olive oil and vinegar dressing. The burgers are great and a wonderful selection of wines, beers and other cocktails make this a place that is really a go to on any day of the week. And weekends they have live music, which is a nice bonus. Service on the weekends is quick and attentive. During the week you go inside and order while weight staff brings to your table. If you're going to get coffee here, I'd definitely recommend getting a specialty drink rather than drip coffee. I appreciate that there was plenty of parking. For anyone who wants some adult beverages, there is a bar that actually looks very impressive for a cafe! So I ordered through Uber Eats, so I can't talk about the service or ambiance. However, I can discuss the food and drinks. I usually have a pretty okay experience with ordering from them. But this time, I was appalled by what I was given. I ordered the salmon cake eggs benedict. I was shocked to find one cake and a sad little salad to the side. (See picture.) I think they forgot one patty? Not sure. But this is certainly not worth $20 alone. In addition to the quantity, the hollandaise sauce is pretty bland and the toast was burnt. The pastries are good, but a bit pricey. Fries are full of flavor and I highly recommend! I also ordered a matcha latte which was okay. I prefer a tad more matcha. Their drinks I do have to say are phenomenal. My favorite drink I've gotten is the horchata chai, but they don't offer it anymore. Overall, I was definitely disappointed in the cakes.
