Bubble Tea Café was open on Fourth of July, thankfully, so we stopped by for boba after lunch. The interior is your typical 2000s coffee shop vibe with a few tables and chairs to sit in. I got the black milk tea with pearls (30% sugar and no ice). The pearls are smaller than what I'm used to and had a nice, bouncy texture. I don't think they were soaked in sugar or honey because they didn't have any flavor. 30% sugar was surprisingly not too sweet and I think I could have benefited from 50% sugar here. I was finally able to come back to Rockville for the first time since quarantine began over a year ago, and when we were in the area I immediately wanted to visit Bubble Tea Café. When walking up from the shopping center, I saw people walking past with coffeeshop cups, which made me worry that Bubble Tea Cafe wasn't there anymore! My walk turned into a panicked jog which ended with relief to see that it was still there, still serving customers their bubble teas. Bubble Tea Cafe is not an international chain location and not a super trendy and hip place that will look incredible on your Instagram feed, but I have always really liked their tea and I really like that their tapioca pearls are the smaller variety, especially given that I don't usually get pearls in my teas anymore. (Not that anyone asked but they seem to make me burp? I probably hork them down too fast; the small ones don't seem to have this issue!) The flavor of the jasmine green milk tea is always fragrant with a really good tea flavor. The prices are very reasonable and simple, which is great if you go to other bubble tea places and feel your head spinning doing the math with various add-ons and toppings. If you want a big treat, they got a BIG cup for you. They also sell a bunch of little snacks. Staff has always been very nice to us and it's quiet but we have never been the only customers there. Honestly, I was so incredibly relieved that this little hidden gem is here. I always lament that it seems a bit tough to organically discover them but the people know! This used to be my favorite bubble tea place. Unfortunately I've gone back a couple times in recent years and it just wasn't the same :( That being said, I don't want to deter anyone from going here because the bubble tea is still pretty good. Some positives are: they have a lot of flavors! Their green tea is very fragrant and comes through in the juice teas! They also have a decent selection of toppings! The bubbles are good consistency, however they lack flavor. I would definitely choose bubble tea cafe over Kung Fu Tea. The drinks are simple but refreshing. I use to come here a lot a while back before kung fu tea, tea do, and all the other new boba places opened up in rockville. I was so hyped up about those other places that I forgot how great this place was. I went back recently and i loved it. I got a large mango green tea (juice tea). Their green tea is probably the best out of all the bubble tea places that ive been to. It has a very nice flowery taste to it which compliments the mango flavor very well. I like this place a lot becuase they don't drown their bubble teas in syrup, you can take the syrup but you can also taste the tea. My favorite part though is the bubbles. I dont know if they soak their bubbles in brown sugar/ honey, but it doesnt taste like it....I really like this! The honey/brown sugar soak can be overwhelming at other bubble tea shops at times so this is a plesant change. Their bubbles are sweet but the sweetness doesnt interfere with the tea itself. The bubbles are also really tiny which I love. If you havent been here give it a try, its not fancy and dressed up like other places but its really good! Also the owners are adorable! They run the shop by themselves and its great to go support a local mom-pop shop like this place. read more

On the one hand, the place really does have a lot of heart. The most mom and pop boba shop I've been to in DMV to date, I think it's a great place to get some work done and have a casual chat. The parking behind the building usually isn't too bad, plus the free WiFi has decent speeds. As for the drinks themselves, the menu is pretty vanilla filled with classic staples and not much else. You're able to customize your drink with sweetness and ice levels, which is always nice. From the looks of it, this place does the syrup game for fruit flavors if you're particular about that. I usually just get a smoothie or the jasmine green milk tea. Everything in my drink is aight - the tea, the flavor, the boba. Perfect for filling a boba craving in general in the area, but I don't think I specifically crave Bubble Tea Cafe's rendition [keep in mind my biased West Coast comparisons]. FOOD and DRINKS: Large Mango Boba: If you *love* boba as much as I do, go for the large which is huge and only $5.25! The boba they use is smaller than most places, but they definitely give you a generous amount. My only knock on this is the fact they use powder to flavor their drinks. It's not a deal breaker for me, but I'm used to places that freshly brew their tea. Chocolate Brownie: I am not fond of chocolate or sweets, but I did enjoy this even if the toppings were a bit excessive. The brownie is drizzled with chocolate and has pecans and chocolate pieces mixed in. It's not overly sweet, which is great. Pecan Blondie: Similar to the brownie, the sweetness was on point. Of the two desserts, this was actually my favorite. It held together well while still retaining a crumbly texture. This mom-and-pop joint serves up good boba without the hassle of picking the amount of ice and sweetness you want like the chains do. Although this is more of a 3.5-rating, I rounded up to a 4-star. This place is a nice bubble tea location. Parking can be confusing. Try to park in the parking garage, above the shop, that way you can walk to the bubble tea shop. It probably a two minute walk from the parking garage. As far as their bubble tea-- I do have to say that I have had better bubble tea. This place uses a lot of artificial flavoring. I got the green tea smoothie I do not recommend it. It was way too icy for me and lacked a lot of the green tea flavoring that other bubble tea spots offer. The mango smoothie was actually really good. It was super sweet and thick. The mango flavor was very obvious unlike their green tea smoothie. Also, please note that any bubble or jelly additions cost an additional 50 cents. Also, if you get 6 teas you get one free. So ask for a stamp card :) read more

I have to be honest, I was a bit disappointed after reading all of the raving reviews about this place. Stamp cards here are 6 stamps and the next one is free, which is such a great deal compared to those 10 stamps and the next is free. Also, the prices and flavors here beat all those places. Win win. I've had a tough time finding a good bubble tea spot as I'm used to the ones I've had while I lived in California for the past 27 years. I've been boba shopping around- from places in Rockville to stands at the malls, and bubble tea cafe is my favorite by quite a bit. Most places tend to be way too sweet, so I would order with half sugar, but then some places wouldn't allow that since drinks may be premade. Not here though! They make it fresh and you can definitely customize the level of sugar and ice and so forth. Luckily I don't need to here because it's a good amount of sweetness. Some people may say its bland if they're used to much sweeter milk tea drinks, but feel free to add more sugar/powder/syrup to meet your taste. I've had their almond milk tea and their honeydew milk tea. Both are so good! The pearls are a bit smaller than most places, but that's guarantee that it won't get stuck through the straws, right? They cook the peaks well too. They aren't all bland and gross; they have some honey flavor to them. I haven't tried their smoothies and shakes yet, but some day I will! My favorite bubble tea place! My regular order (which of course I recommend!) is: - kumquat/passionfruit green tea with tapioca and mixed jelly The owners are extremely sweet and friendly every time. The atmosphere is clean and comfortable. Easy parking nearby. Anyone who says Jumbo Café is better is insane! This place makes better bubble tea and generally gives more bubbles than Ten Ren's and Jumbo. Plus it's nice to have the same person make your tea every time. I always found that Ten Ren's would vary SO much depending on who was working. The bubbles are firm and sweet and the tea is relatively strong (which I prefer over teas that just taste like overly sweet fruit juice.) The green and black teas are both great. I find that the green tea can be a bit perfumey. I've tried most of the flavors, and the only one I would advise against is the plum. Sometimes I order a frozen bubble tea, but I think those are too sweet for me! They leave me even more thirsty! read more

This is a pretty simple, but good, bubble tea place. They have a few different options such as milkshakes and smoothies as well as some boosters, such as protein, that you can add. In and of itself these options for variety set them apart from most other places since very few offer such options. The choice in flavors is pretty standard with nothing all that unique. I had a large Lychee Green Tea with bubbles and I really enjoyed it. The tea is where this place banks it's flavor on and it is an investment well met. A simple basic lychee green tea from most other places often has a feeling of mostly being syrup with very little of the green tea aroma coming around if at all when you get it. From here the aroma of the tea was as present as ever and was actually really well balanced with the lychee. I regularly got a nice hit of lychee flavor to start things off and instead of what is usually a bitter and dry aftertaste that I get with other lychee green teas I got a nice aromatic taste that filled my nostrils after each sip. I think the bubbles help this actually. These also aren't the brown sugar bobas that you find commonplace at pretty much every other boba place now, these are like the original OG bubbles that I'd drink when I was a kid with pretty much no sweetness or really any flavor to them. I think that helped with the aroma in the aftertaste as there wasn't really any sweetness or sugar to compete with in the bubbles left in your mouth after you drink the tea and start chewing the bubbles. The bubbles were soft and are pretty easy to just bite through so if you like a bit more bite and chew to your bubbles you might find these lacking. The bubbles are also a lot smaller, you usually get one bubble fitting the circumference of a straw but you could easily fit two or three of these bubbles inside that same space. Last but not least the large size is REALLY large, like a proper 32oz plastic cup and the price for it is pretty fair at ~$6.70. All in all great place and definitely worth a visit if you want simple but good. I'm definitely coming back for when I'm craving a LOT of good tea! read more

Leagues, miles, leaps and bounds, head and shoulders, above the other chains in the area. I always go with a large black milk tea, less sweet, less sugar, add boba. The BOBA, people. It's made small-batch homemade - tender but not soggy. Sweet but not overbearing. In a word? Perfect. Literally the best cup of bubble tea I have ever drank in my life every single time I go. My partner (and I) love the kumquat tea as well. Sweet and sour, absolutely fantastic for a summer's day. It pains me to see folks line up at national chain establishments in the area. Please support this bubble tea place. This place is by far the best bubble tea place in Rockville. It is not a big chain and now more then ever we need to support small businesses. You can call your order ahead of time and they have set up a barrier to protect you and the staff. They are open from 12pm-7pm Tuesday-Saturday and Sunday from 12pm-7pm. They don't have the lines like all the other bubble tea places and it is so good. I can't speak highly enough. Support local business and come here for your bubble tea!
