    Beet Salad
    Paul J.

A last-minute Sunday brunch with friends at Java Nation, and we settled in for our usual beet salad, and this time I got the blackened shrimp tacos - perfectly plump shrimp with cole slaw, radishes and tomatoes. We also shared a crab dip with a sliced baguette to share, and mushroom ravioli with spinach. Java Nation is a Montgomery County hidden gem, serving up great food in a totally relaxed and casual atmosphere. Is it a coffee shop, a smoothie joint, a bakery, or a bistro? I guess the answer is Yes to all the above. If you haven't tried Java Nation yet, you're missing out!

I was not expecting this. I went as part of my Maryland cafe passport and this one blew me away. With Java nation having so many locations I was expecting Starbucks type quality, but it was such good coffee. Probably one of the best I've had in Maryland and I am an avid coffee drinker. The food was amazing too. The Latin fusion was quality of Latin food you can't regularly find and it was just a fun menu. The restaurant as a whole was welcoming and somewhere you'd want to hang out too. I can't even dream up a better coffee shop.

Super cute place I appreciate the vibes in general. I like how it's cocktails and food and coffee and pastry. The honey coconut cloud matcha was honestly pretty good! A little expensive but somehow worth it :) good blend of flavors. Not the biggest fan of the default to tip or the music. Also the floor vibrates from either the blender or something. That's really random and weird to mention but it made my feet feel a little weird lol. I was here for a study session and it was ok but I wouldn't come back for that. I would potentially come back again though and try the food or pastry. Seems like a cool place to hang out with friends. There's also parking so that's nice. The bathrooms are nice, clean, and smell good.

I finally visited Java Nation! I have a friend who works nearby and we've been long overdue for a catch up. We wanted to go to a new (to us) happy hour, and this was the place he chose. They have happy hour until 6:30 for certain food and drinks. I arrived first, went inside and was greeted by the strong smell of coffee. It's definitely a coffee spot! But they have a full menu, cocktail bar, and scrumptious desserts on display. I saw there was an outdoor area that's probably heated, but I was staying inside where it was cozy. The bar is small and was full at the time so I grabbed a seat at the long high table nearby. Someone came to me almost immediately after sitting down to bring menus. And then about 5 minutes later someone brought water, and then another 5 someone came to take my order. I wasn't ready yet, so I looked over the menu. I knew I was getting the margarita flight, no question. The flight has 4, and they have 4 types of margaritas, easy! Classic, pineapple infused basil, spicy watermelon, and mango passionfruit. You have an option to swap a margarita for their red sangria, which is cool too. When my friend came and we ordered that, we swapped the classic for that. For food we got the margherita flatbread and corn ribs. Let's dive in... Corn ribs: they literally looked like ribs, but made of corn... AWESOME! Loved the aioli that came with them and the seasoning and flavors were on point. Margherita flatbread: loved the sauce, cheese, and crust. Literally zero complaints here and would get it again. Margarita flight: ranked, my favorites were the basil, mango, watermelon, and sangria. The basil was just so pleasant... the mango too, but not quite as much. The spicy watermelon was... REALLY spicy. The best word my friend and I came up with was sharp... it was so sharp! The sangria had a different taste to it... not a bad one, but it just wasn't my favorite. But overall, every drink was great! This was a cool first experience of Java Nation... did I mention the presentation of the food was REALLY nice? Especially the corn ribs. They have a bunch of other dishes on their main menu that seem surprisingly upscale for a cafe. I can't wait to explore more of the menu to check these things out. Oh, the service was a bit inconsistent, I will admit, but everyone was nice and I'd definitely come back.

    Iced Matcha

Came to try Java Nation on Thanksgiving morning and was disappointed. I wanted to try their seasonal salted maple matcha but after ordering they informed me they were out of the syrup, so I settled for a regular vanilla matcha. The matcha was very very watery, as if the ice had already been melted in it, but that wasn't the case. The matcha flavor was faint and underwhelming. I was extremely disappointed in this drink. I also ordered the spinach and feta crossiant which was good. Nothing spectacular but it was a solid crossiant. I do want to go back and try their actual food and maybe a coffee next time but as for their matcha, it was not a hit for me. It's a good place tucked away that was surprisingly packed.

    Hearty Beef Stew

I love this place. I've been here like 2/3 times already and I keep coming back. If you're looking for something hearty get the beef stew. If you looking for something warm get the lentil soup. If you looking for something filling get the half chicken. If you looking for something fresh and healthy but filling get the honey pear beet salad. I mean you really can't go wrong here! Hands down I love it here

I was looking for a cool place to hangout that isn't a bar, and I fou.... Oh wait...it's also a bar. This spot had been on my radar for a minute, but being that it's a little out of my walking range, I hadn't tried it yet - until today. Plenty of parking, which is great. And plenty of room to spread out inside. They have communal seating, and also tables inside and out. You can bring book, or a laptop...the space would definitely work for a casual meeting. and lest you think it's only coffee they have a full bar - incase you need a half-snoot-full at 2 PM. To eat I had a lox bagel (I'm a sucker for smoked salmon). They pickled their red onions. A departure from tradition, but a welcome one, nonetheless. The acid really brightened up the cream cheese, and tempered the salt. Nice move! The menu is fairly expansive for a "coffee joint". Which brings me to my last point... Java Nation is clearly trying to be more than a small coffee house. They have good food, coffee, and wine on offer. They make the short 4 mile drive out of downtown Bethesda kind of worth it. I'll definitely be back. Maybe I'll se ya there!

Wonderful place! I ordered the ethopian pour over lot #6, fantastic taste and bold flavors! My friend ordered a cappuccino and it was also fantastic! Service was quick and pleasant amd we will return. Parking is a little tricky on a bust day though so prepare for that.

I visited Java Nation because I thought it was a coffee shop. Upon arrival the restaurant/cafe was bustling. With two areas for seating and a bar. The acoustics in this are not conducive if you want to do any work. I was seated at the bar and between people enjoying catching up with friends for lunch and the orders being yelled I honestly couldn't stand it. On top of that there were only two places to plug anything in. I had to ask if I could unplug the lights at the bar in order to charge my laptop. When I asked if the outdoor patio area might be less noisy they said yes but there were no outlets out there. I ordered a large lavender latte half sweet, it was luke warm and very sweet. What a bummer for such a cute place. They had full menu with plenty of food, coffee and non/alcoholic drinks, plenty of parking and quite festive!

This is a place we frequent a lot so I finally got around to a review. This is an amazing spot with great food, coffee, service and ambiance!

    Empty tables
    Catalina O.

We decided to grab a coffee before the storm; no tables available for 3. A bunch of tables reserved we had to convince the server to allow us to use one table..... and we had a timer!!! 1 hour to eat!!!! Not coming back to this location or any of the other ones close to us. Unfortunately supporting local not always goes good. This initial experience ruined the overall perception for the food or drinks we ordered.

    Peter L.

The food is great. The service is good. The ambience is fantastic. Love the outdoor venue love the music in the evenings. It's a great place to work during the day. Can't complain about anything. Love the place. It's a great neighborhood. Sit down and have some coffee and talk to your neighbor.

Mushroom Spinach Omelet with goat cheese Crab Cake Benedict Seasonal Zesty Cardamom Latte
    Shafiq A.

Always on point! Java nation is a classic cafe in Maryland. The omelette was delicious with the goat cheese, which wasn't overpowering. It's loaded with spinach which I really liked! We got home fries and sourdough toast which compliments the meal! The crab Benedict was also amazing. You can tell that they use fresh crab meat without fillers. The English muffin was perfect! We got breakfast and did some work at our table. You get a free 90 min wifi access in the cafe. It was a good amount of time to work on somethings! It does get a little loud as more people came in and got busier.

Good variety and not too many options. There's meat, veggies, and seafood. I'm uncertain whether they can specifically modify any dishes for vegan. - Quality. Delicious. My trout was nicely filleted, well seasoned (not overly salty), and the skin was extra crispy. It was served over a bed of celery, potatoes, and cauliflower that were tender. Their shoestring fries were not overly salty and were nicely crispy. Their seasonal dish of grilled shrimp with their barley salad was also very flavorful. The shrimp were well-seasoned and a nice texture (i.e., not overly cooked/rubbery). The profiteroles were sweet, but not overly so, and had a nice amount of chocolate sauce drizzled over it. - Service. Excellent. The Porsche parking lot is also able to read your license plate. - Cost. To be fair, it's going to depend on what you order. When you combine drinks, any seasonal dishes (and the wait staff did not tell us the cost of the seasonal dishes we ordered), and dessert, it's a fair amount. - Reservations. Definitely recommend making reservations, rather than walking in. Final Answer Would be willing to come back here again, but probably not a first choice.

I love the immediate view of the massive cookie display upon walking in! Our server was amazing. She was thoughtful, friendly, and attentive. She gave amazing recommendations. We got the jalapeño corn bread, Brussel sprouts, mushroom pizza, spicy kale Cesar, and baby back ribs. For dessert of course we got two cookies with a side of ice cream. Everything was absolutely delicious and flavorful. The sweet potato fries came with the ribs and my goodness, by far my favorite sweet potato fries ever - crispy, crinkle cut, rectangular shaped fries. The cookies were amazing, we got s'mores and Thai banana. Yum, they were soft and chewy and so good! I would come back just for the sweet potato fries and cookies hahaha. But truly everything was made to impress. Loved my meal and would come back!

I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich ($24) and I am pretty sure they just bought a McChicken Sandwich from McDonalds and served it. We've been here before and previously had a decent experience, so this visit was especially disappointing. Not sure what has changed, but with so many better options around, we'll be taking our business elsewhere.

I Was Craving A Good Breakfast Sandwich, Something That Didn't Taste Like It Came From A Gas…read moreStation. It's Honestly So Hard To Find Something Quick & Actually Good For Breakfast These Days. I Happened To Be In The Area And Remembered This Spot Was On My "Saved Places" List, So I Decided To Finally Give It A Try Especially Since I Was On A Time Crunch This Morning (Shoutout To St. Patrick's Day ). My Day Definitely Felt Lucky & Even More Blessed! Parking Was Easy Since It Was Early Morning. It's Street Parking With A Meter App, & I Believe There's Also A Nearby Lot For Busier Times. Walking In, The Space Felt Simple Yet So Inviting. Super Clean, Calm, & Just A Pleasant Environment Overall. The Kind Of Place That Immediately Feels Peaceful. While Waiting In Line, I Couldn't Help But Notice The Display Of Pastries.... Absolutely Beautiful. From Thin Cookies To Buttery, Golden Croissants And Donuts... Everything Looked Fresh, Perfectly Made, & Honestly Hard To Choose From. Plus, Prices Were Very Reasonable For The Quality. AVOCADO EGG & CHEESE CROISSANT SANDWICH - $12 Fluffy Scrambled Eggs, Fresh Sliced Avocado, Swiss & American Cheese On A Buttery, Perfectly Toasted Croissant With A Slightly Sweet & Savory Aioli. Let Me Tell You This Was By Far The Best Croissant Breakfast Sandwich I've Ever Had!!!!!!!! No Exaggeration. My Jaw Literally Dropped. Every Bite Was Rich, Flavorful, And Perfectly Balanced. The Croissant Was Flaky Yet Soft, The Eggs Were Light & Fluffy, & That Aioli Brought Everything Together. Kisses To The Chef ‍ Because They Really Did Their Thing On This. WOW. CHOCOLATE DIPPED BISCOTTI - $3 House-Made, Buttery, Crunchy, & So Satisfying. The Chocolate Side Was Rich And Delicious, But Honestly? Even The Plain Side Was Incredible On Its Own. Perfect Pairing With A Hot Drink Or Just As A Snack. HOT COCOA (Oatmilk) - $5 They Didn't Have Whipped Cream, So I Wasn't Expecting Much... But Wow, I Was So Wrong. It Came In A Nice-Sized Mug With A Beautiful Heart Design On Top... That Alone Stole My Heart . But Then The First Sip? Smooth, Rich, & So Damn Good. It Completely Surprised Me In The Best Way. Definitely One Of Those "Don't Judge It Until You Try It" Moments. The Staff Were Nice And Helpful. You Can Tell They Take Their Time To Get Everything Right, From The Food To The Overall Experience & It's Absolutely Worth The Wait. I'm Honestly Still In Disbelief At How Good Everything Was. The Food, The Atmosphere, The Experience... All Top Tier. I'm Lowkey Mad I Didn't Come Here Sooner, But This Is Definitely One Of My New Favorite Spots. I'll Be Putting Everyone I Know Onto This Place. I'll Absolutely Be Back & I'm Already Hoping They Open A Location Closer To Me.

Then other people were getting theirs in dine in cups so we ordered another cup and asked for it dine in. The latte was fine! Latte art super nice. I love the cups and the saucers for the hot drinks! Cookies were tasty. We got the chocolate chunk cookie and the chocolate oatmeal cookie. Line wasn't long at 1PM on a Friday. I also felt like the cashier was just trying to get us in and out very quickly but I understand because the line does get long. Just used to a more chill, personable experience. They have designed laptop zones so the regular seating can be screen free which is super cool! Next time will try to get food! I would come back.
