Matchbox is great. They advertised a Yappy Hour for Dogs on Wednesdays from 3-6pm. So I thought I would give it a try. My dog loved it. The service was great. The hostess took us to our seats. Then our waiter came who gave us two menus. One for the dog and one for me. I ordered the fresh duck that came with carrots, kale and superfoods. I ordered the dragon fruit mojito and brussel sprouts. The mojito was very refreshing and sweet so it was very easy to drink. The sprouts were delicious. They were cooked to perfection and had great flavor. My dog really enjoyed the duck. They gave great portions. I could tell he was stuffed. Along with the doggy entree he received a matchbox toy and a treat. The ambiance was cool. We sat outside on the patio and their was one other dog. No issues what so ever. Mother's Day brunch was unfortunately a disappointment. With late planning about a week beforehand, we were happy to even secure a reservation for 9 people at 10 a.m. One guest wasn't feeling well, so our final party was 8. We also had a super senior with us, so getting everyone seated took a little extra time, and we were finally settled by about 10:15. From there, things went downhill service-wise. We waited and waited for a server and had to ask multiple employees walking by if someone could help us. Finally, around 10:50, Giovanni came to take our order. While he was taking it, another customer interrupted him to complain that although she had received her food, her children still hadn't gotten their drinks. He attempted to assist her, and we expressed our frustration at being interrupted after already waiting so long. To his credit, he asked someone else to help her. The restaurant itself has a cozy layout with several different sections, and I really wanted to like the place since I pass it often but had never stopped in before. Because it was Mother's Day, we tried not to let the delays ruin our time together, but the service was honestly unacceptable for such a special occasion. As for the food: - Shrimp & grits (2 orders): 4/5 The flavor was very good, the grits were creamy, and the turkey sausage added a nice touch. My only complaint was that some ingredients were chopped so finely that there wasn't much texture or bite. The shrimp was good/whole though. - Catfish & grits (3 orders plus an extra side of grits): 3/5 You get two large pieces of fish, which was appreciated, especially for bigger appetites. However, one person felt the batter was overly seasoned and too salty. - Chicken & waffles (2 orders): 4/5 Generous portions with four pieces of boneless chicken and four waffle sections. Definitely satisfying. We also ordered a pizza, mini sliders, biscuits, four adult beverages, and a hot tea. The total bill came to around $350 with the automatic gratuity included for a large party, which was actually reasonable for everything ordered. Overall, the food had some bright spots, but the extremely poor service overshadowed the experience. Being busy on Mother's Day is understandable, especially for a restaurant that has been around for a long time, but special occasions are exactly when service should be at its best. Sunday 1/18/26 I found out about the $50 all-you-can-eat brunch option via social media, and having never visited before, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try as many items as I wanted for a fixed cost. I can't quite remember a dining experience so awful. Had reservations for a party of two on an otherwise unremarkable Saturday. We were seated, and then... nothing happened for almost 10 minutes. No server, no cutlery. The server finally arrived; we ordered drinks--limoncello spritz (which was great), water, and some biscuits. The limoncello spritz was good, but getting the waiter to provide water seemed like a tall order. We asked twice for the biscuits and were told they were out but making some more. A friend and I came in for brunch/lunch today and we both ordered the shrimp & grits. While the food came out pretty quickly, I was surprised at how small the portion seemed to be. I would suggest ordering something on the side in addition to the dish if you want to leave full. While the flavor profile of the dish was rich, I needed to add a bit of salt to truly bring out those flavors some more. I also would have liked the shrimp to be a bit blackened. First time at Matchbox, and overall it was a pretty solid experience. The bartender was really nice, and the drinks were on point--I had a mule to start and then a vodka soda, both well made. We tried the appetizer + sandwich pairing, which was a good deal. I was really excited for the Maryland crab soup, but unfortunately, it was a big letdown. I only had one bite--it just wasn't good at all. No one asked how everything was, so I didn't mention it, but if I had been asked, I definitely would've said something. Honestly, for a place serving "Maryland" crab soup in Maryland, it was kind of embarrassing. Thankfully, the crispy cod sandwich made up for it--it was amazing. Perfectly cooked, crispy, and the tartar sauce was fantastic. That's the dish I'll be coming back for. We went with a fairly large family/party so this could've also affected things. Seems like they prefer to push their brunch menu on Sunday. Had a variety of options. I was very disappointed with my experience. I ordered the fish and chips for $24.00, and what I received was only two small pieces of fish with a huge pile of fries. To make matters worse, the fries were cold when they were served. For that price, I expected a much more generous portion of fish and food that was served hot. What made it even more frustrating is that the menu clearly shows three large pieces of fish, but I was served only two small pieces. That felt very misleading. I spoke with the manager about it, and the only explanation I received was that "the fish is portioned out." That response didn't address the fact that the portion didn't match what was advertised on the menu or that the fries were served cold. Charging $24 for two small pieces of fish and cold fries is simply not a good value. I left feeling disappointed and like I overpaid for my meal. Unfortunately, I won't be returning. read more

Hey friends! I met my godmom and cousin here for girls night. I've always heard good things about Matchbox, I finally got to try it recently. Matchbox serves New American food and is known for their pizzas. I ordered the black bean burger and fries($18). I hated everything about the burger. I specifically asked for it be cooked well done so it wouldn't fall apart. I cut into to and it immediately fell apart. I suggest they use oats to bind the burger together to avoid it falling apart. The burger also had ingredients on it that weren't listed on the menu. That's an allergy hazard and management should fix it immediately. The burger came with Fritos on top and cucumbers... unpleasant. The fries were delicious. I also ordered a Dragonfruit margarita. It was very delicious. A nice balance of sweet and tart from the alcohol. Service was okay. Our server was robotic. The interior is aesthetically pleasing. I definitely wasn't expecting such an impressive interior. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of this local franchise The last time I came to a matchbox was decades ago when I first moved to DC. And there's a reason I haven't been back. However, I was really unhappy to find out that they actually charge for this item. When we pointed this out to the server he was very deferential and said it was up to the management. Honestly, I think that is a little bit bizarre because a lot of these restaurants do provide complementary bread or chips as something to munch on while you're waiting. Another thing that was a little bizarre about the surface was my friends who came a little bit earlier than me decided to sit inside but then wanted to sit outside when I joined which was fine by me. So we all proceeded to the outdoor seating arrangement and then chase down by the server who didn't like that. We made our own seating arrangement and asked us to wait for over several minutes just outside. In one of the aisles. I saw several open tables so finally I convinced my friends that we could just sit down, but it was a little bit bizarre because she never came back to the table or even came to find us again. There is plenty of free parking. Ambiance is nice. I like the bathrooms and I like that they have living plants inside of the bathrooms. The restaurant itself is quite big. It's much bigger in terms of space compared to the other locations that I've seen. Overall, I think this is a very overrated chain. I'm not really understanding why it's still in business because their pizzas just plain terrible. My pizza was bland. Literally nothing to write home about. He ordered the ribs and he said they were just okay.
