Point Reyes is great for travelers looking to spend a day outdoors. You'll have a very relaxing time hiking the trails and relaxing on the beaches-even just driving through the parks - is very scenic. Along the way the city of Marshall resides. My partner mentions his colleagues said we should stop at Nick's for lunch. Upon entering, I see a window where patrons are ordering. Walked inside and the lady mentions you'll need to come outside and order and then sit down and pick up your food. Kinda odd why the establishment would have it that way. Anyhoot, oysters, clam chowder, and fish and chips were mediocre. Oysters were fresh as they should be, but the rest was nothing special. read more

Recently moved to the Sacramento Area from the Central Valley by Merced California. We'd regularly take a quick trip over the Pacheco Pass to Monterey and eat at Vivolo's our favorite Chowder House. Today, we took a road trip to find a new Chowder House closer to home. The mission was a success! We headed towards Point Reyes Station and followed the Coast Line to Nick's Cove. It was a successful experience! We started the meal with a bowl of their New England Clam Chowder and it was perfect. We got the baguette and it stole the show (WOW). Baked that day with a salt/butter topping. My wife had the fish and chips. Normally she leaves a piece for me, but not today. The fries that complimented the dish were excellent. As for the slaw on the side, she doesn't like it so it was handed off to me who loved it. I had the fish sandwich and homemade chips. Another incredible plate. The service was great and ambiance fantastic! It was a great day trip with my wife and a for sure to be a return date in the future! My wife and I went there this time last year for our 20th wedding anniversary. We didn't review it then, but I would have given that experience 4 stars. We had table service in 2025 and thankfully weren't forced to use their QR code ordering system. It's much nicer to have table service from human beings (while fully understanding staffing shortages, a problem that goes back to the COVID period). On Saturday, January 24th, we celebrated our 21st anniversary. So, like last year, we had the creamy New England clam chowder, which was excellent and I'd give the bowl a 5! We also tried a daily special, the Japanese mussels, which were served in miso sauce. I thought they were very good, but my wife complained that they scrimped on portions. It was delicious and I would give that dish a 4.5 (if that were possible). Last year we had the cioppino, which was excellent, but we felt it was pricey and didn't get it again. But here's why we gave them a lower score yesterday. Instead of the excellent fried calamari we had last year, they have a new incarnation called the "Tempura Fritto Misto." It was battered and deep friend calamari, delicata squash, white anchovy, lemon and sage leaf, with two dips: black garlic balsamic aioli and lemon pepper mayonnaise (the sauces were good). Sounds great on paper, right? But in practice, each battered item was deep fried so much that it came out brown. We couldn't even taste the ingredients because everything tasted like oil. My wife has worked in restaurants and pointed out the gold standard for battered and deep friend food, especially tempura, is that it should be "very pale, almost white to light blond, and delicate, lacy, with an airy texture." As I said, ours was brown, hard and tasteless. We should have sent it back to the kitchen because we could see the lighter colored batter on the fish (and chips) at other tables. I'm too polite and didn't say anything, but my wife told the waitress, when she brought the check, about how the tempura seemed to have been fried in bad oil (I think it might have been overcooked). That dish deserved only one star, but obviously mistakes can happen. The location is spectacularly beautiful and the view is stunning. That itself makes it worth visiting. I can't say enough about how good Nick's Cove is but I'll give it a shot anyway. Today was a beautiful day in Marin after many, many days of rain so we decided to take a drive over to the coast. Good fortune was on the horizon--Nick's was open. We walked into the bar. Spread out before me was the familiar old bar and dining area, so wonderfully comforting to a couple of Marin old timers, and a bright, sun-filled large dining room with perfect tables and view. We sat down on the really comfortable no fuss chairs. I looked at the menu and what I'd been wanting for weeks was right there. A Dungeness Crab Louis. And it was perfect! Fresh, absolutely delicious, everything a Crab Louis should be. More about the menu-- I can't remember seeing anything as creative in a long time. During January they're offering mussels from around the world. This week it's Spain. I can't wait to go back and try every dish they have. A friend and I were staying in Tomales for a workshop. I saw Nicks seemed to be the closest place just 3 miles down the road. We went for our first night in town and had amazing food and cocktails. My friend was designated driver and was happy with the creative mock tails. The Tomales Bay Oysters are beautifully briny. When you step out of your car the breeze from the bay carries this brininess. Everything we ordered was superbly prepared and beautifully seasoned. We enjoyed the food and staff so much, we came back three times that weekend. Really reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Hats off to Callen and the entire staff. Cozy and quaint seafood spot right on the water of Tamales Bay, dishing out upscale lunch and dinner options. While the prices are certainly on the high side for what you're getting, I think it's important to remember that Nicks Cove is within a 1.5 hour drive of the Bay Area and they are entitled to charge what their market will support. If you have the money it's worth a visit, but if not you wont miss out on too much taking pics from the nearby boat launch. Service: You are seated by a host upon entering, but after that you will be ordering off of your phone using a table specific QR code. I personally like this style of service, but I've seen some reviews citing this as a criticism. Your food and drinks are served to you in a reasonable amount of time and the servers are friendly and willing to answer questions. Aside from that pretty standard across the board. Food/Drink: I ordered a mid range wine and my wife ordered a cocktail. I honestly dont recall too much about the drinks so nothing was particularly good or bad, though they were certainly overpriced. I had the Fish and Chips which were damn near perfect and very memorable and my wife had a salad (I forget which one). If you do go, give yourself a cheat day and get the Fish and Chips, they're worth it! Ambiance: It's clear that this is what lets them get away with the premium prices they charge and was the main reason we visited. The restaraunt is right on the water and you get a great view of Tomales Bay. There is a small pier that extends into the bay itself which in previous years guests could go out on and enjoy their meals in the boathouse at the end! **UPDATE!!** The manager asked us to give them a second chance, so we came back tonight and wow!! It was a totally different experience from when I came in February. I honestly now believe the first time we came to eat at Nick's, it was super busy and understaffed, hence the bad experience. This time, a server attended to us and was super polite. Elora was our mixologist. She was bright and friendly and warm and hospitable and made us fell welcome as we came in and sat down at the bar. I ordered beer my wife had a glass of tea and we enjoyed the ambience of looking out at the Bay and the smell of the dining room. After a short period of time we got hungry ourselves and decided to take part in dinner there actually it turned do a craving for a snack. Our snack happened to be a Half dozen Mornay Oysters. I have to say that it wasn't really a favorite of my wife or myself but the oysters were fresh the presentation was very nice the service was impeccable it's just for a particular taste it wasn't for us. I wish we had selected the Rockefeller because I love those but I wanted to try something new. I would call this a $24 lesson learned. Everything I've ever had there has been delicious beyond belief so I can't really complain. It's my palate. So since it's me and not them, I'm going to give them 5 stars again because they always knock my socks off every time I go there. I love this place the pieces. If you've never been here by the way, take your cocktails out to the little house at the end of the pier and enjoy some music while you're out there. The views are epic. Took us over 30 minutes to find a spot on the pier, not even by the restaurant. - Rude servers. We reached out to 2 servers about food pick up and both were rude. When we finally found a table on the pier, they shouted at us that they don't serve at the pier. So we ordered, we picked up our order, we cleaned up and we took the dishes back. - Overpriced for the quality and quantity of food. We were in the sleepy coastal town of Marshall and we stopped for dinner at Nick's Cove. We were greeted at the door and ordered there, with the food delivered to whatever table we selected. It was a rustic feel with big windows which looked out onto Tomales Bay. Beautiful! We had root beer and a fab cocktail called Dragon's Blood! It was awesome!! It had rum, blood orange juice, some kind of chai concoction and cardamom bitters. What a trip! We shared a bowl of clam chowder that was fantastic. It had nice chunks of potato and lots of bacon. Very easy on the palate. Then we had their cheese burger and Cajun seared tuna sandwich, both served with a healthy serving of their fries. Dinner and drinks were delicious but my all-time favorite was breakfast that was brought to our cottage and let me say WOW was I impressed??? Our breakfast tray had fruit, hot oatmeal, hot muffins made in house, eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, coffee, milk, espresso, and a breakfast sandwich with salad. BEST breakfast I've ever had!!! The room was cozy had a fireplace with wood. The bathroom had tiles that warmed up, and they offered two full sized soft robes to make you feel all nice and cozy!!! 3.5 stars. I had the pleasure of visiting Nick's Cove last month with my mother for lunch last month. We went on a weekday to beat any crowds and were able to enjoy our meal outside since it was a pleasant weather day (just slightly chilly from the slight breeze). There were few diners with most people opting to eat outside. The staff was pleasant and the fish and chips (2 cods), (dips of ketchup and perhaps ranch) with coleslaw and a beer were enjoyable. The reason I have not given it a higher rating is that I was a bit bummed that one of my cods was noticeably smaller than my mothers, (granted no fish are going to be exactly the same size.) But what really annoyed was that while waiting for my mother to use the restroom before leaving I decided to read an article about the restaurant that they had posted on the wall. the write-up was not more than 2 years old which is fairly new compared to some I've seen at restaurants and spoke to this restaurant as well as an other. In the article the writer mentioned that the fish and chips was $24 (ours was $25 which is totally fine for 2 years later as far as price discrepancy goes), but not that fact he/she mentions that it was $24 for 3 cods! So I'm paying more and getting less only about 2 years later! Sorry Nick's Cove even though I enjoyed driving to a bit out of the way restaurant with a great view that has charm inside as well I'm to taken aback to return again. read more

Equally important, especially for a 4-5 hour trip such as Fort Bragg, Nick's Cove offers the necessary rest for bathroom breaks and also a reliable place for WiFi, where mobile signals may be weak during your travel. For food, I recommend trying their famous Fish and Chips and also the calamari. The lobster roll is good but not great in terms of value (the portion is quite small with not much lobster meat). The clam chowder may taste a bit bland at first but is seasoned quite right the more you taste it. Mostly, the ambiance of this place is great along with the food. Stayed in the Nicolina cottage on the water and LOVED IT. if you stay here, make sure you read the book in the room that explain the history of this room and board-helped me appreciate it more, especially since the original owner is a fellow Croatian (from a town between Split and Dubrovnik). Folks, Nick's Cove has a long and fascinating history starting with Coast Miwok people to Croatian immigrants who operated on Tamales Bay and finally to Highway 1 Hospitality LLC today and others in between! I will not repeat any of it here, but will provide a couple of links at the end which I recommend to all those who may be interested in reading a little bit of local history. Nick's Cove is located roughly 50 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 1, and about 10 miles more if one decides to take Highway 101 and turn west north of Petaluma. The restaurant is located at the southern end of Miller Park right next to Tamales Bay and it is mostly all about fresh seafood! Oysters take the lead and then there is the clam chowder soup, Shrimp Louis, Poke Bowl (Highly recommended!), Cioppino (also recommended!) and more! They have a full bar and an impressive list of wines. If you are visiting on a nice day, you should opt for a table outside and enjoy the view. The scenery is so peaceful and calming that you may get double hungry! These days you have to order outside and then pick up your food when the buzzer they give you sounds, but that is no big deal as long as you are with good company and appreciate good food and view. If you are in the Bay Area and have a day to drive up north, stop at Nick's Cove for a meal or just a drink and some appetizers, you will enjoy it!
