My husband and I came out to the Point Reyes / Inverness area for a quick weekend escape. Nothing planned, totally winged it. So for dinner we had no idea where to go. The first restaurant we tried just didn't feel like a good idea so we left. My husband suggested we drive toward Olema as he remembered a small store or tavern at the corner. I was CERTAIN this would be a waste of time and gas. Well, I hate to admit when I'm wrong, but boy was I wrong!! The place definitely purely has a vibe. Almost an east coast hunter's den - in a good way. I joked that I should have been wearing a plaid blazer with suede elbow patches. Upon arrival everyone was busy (the place was POPPIN'!) but everyone was friendly and welcoming. Beer selection was good (unlike me the other restaurant we had been to) and my hazy was nice and cold. We ordered the smash burger and farmhouse salad. My husband loved his burger (recommend warming the bun?) and I LOVED the salad. It was so fresh and satisfying. Solid spot while in the area. If the decor was a sign for how delicious the food is then this place would be hitting it out of the park! Alas, decor is cuter than food is delicious but that's OK. We shared dishes and tried a few things which was fun to be able to taste more of the menu. I'm a sucker for a good dip so I was excited for the cod dip. We ordered extra crackers, so my pic reflects a double order. The dip was good overall in flavor but too loose/watery in texture and not really Smokey despite the title. If it was thicker it would have been a little stronger overall. The winter salad was good but I'm never a fan when big chunks of lettuce are served. I want a salad that is chopped and mixed properly together to meld the flavors and this wasn't that. Maybe it just comes down to personal preferences. Overall I'm glad we checked it out. I can't say I'd drive from home which is in east Santa Rosa just for it, but I'd make it happen again when in the area. read more

Great location, lovely ambiance, and friendly staff. The food was excellent -- especially the clam spaghetti, which was perfectly cooked with just the right balance of butter and seasoning. Truly one of the best I've had. The oysters and Caesar chicken salad were also very good. The drinks, however, fell short. My dirty martini arrived room temperature with very little olive brine, and even after asking for more, it still lacked that bold, chilled finish you expect. The strawberry spritz was also underwhelming, with barely any white wine or strawberry flavor. I'd definitely return for the food, but hope the cocktails improve to match the kitchen's quality. read more

My sister and I rolled into this place while on an adventure trip. We both ordered the blue plate of the day - linguine with clams and parmesan. Amount of linguine was a bit sparse but the meal came with a lovely salad, plus glass of white wine. After baulking at the first few bites of linguine, the manager? owner? came to the rescue and wanted to help. The pasta was sooo salty but he added another serving of it w/o salt and then it was perfect! The white house wine was already marvelous but he gave us more of that, too. Cute place, ok food. There aren't a ton of places to eat around here, so, if you find yourself in the area and are hungry, this is a perfectly suitable place to stop and have a meal. The restaurant is spacious and had ample indoor, outdoor and indoor/outdoor space. We sat on the back patio and it was lovely. Overall, I found the food to be decent but not amazing. I feel like most of the dishes needed a little work to get them to where they should be. Smoked cod dip - it was ok. I didn't get a lot of smokiness. The dip itself was a little watery. The lavash was good. Winter salad - decent flavors, but the whole presentation was rough (giant leaves with ingredients kind of haphazardly thrown on). It made the dish difficult to share. The ingredients were fresh. Wild mushroom toast with goat cheese - pretty good flavors, but I was disappointed to see mostly crimini mushrooms on there (not my fav). I was hoping for something more local and unique. The bread was cut into two pieces despite the fact that there were three of us so it was hard to divvy up between us. Fries - good. Nice and crispy Brussels - they were fried well and overall had good seasoning but I thought the lemon was a tad too strong (and I like lemon). Service was decent, nothing out of the ordinary . Long story short, i wouldn't go out of my way to come back but I wouldn't scoff at it if I was in the area. The place has a lot of potential. We went to Due West on Valentine's Day for which they had a special menu, so this review doesn't apply to the usual dishes. Even so, I'm sorry to say the food didn't live up to my expectations. The little gems salad was beyond acidic and the sunchokes were hardly roasted as advertised on the menu. I'd have surely passed had I been given the smallest taste of the apple cider vinaigrette. The beets were a huge improvement with a well composed mix of endives, walnuts and citrus. That'd be a repeater. I'm happy to report that everything else, from the warm service to the charming dining room to the stunning location in West Marin made it a worthy experience, but I hope someday I'll return for the regular menu and be wowed. read more

Finally, a chef who knows not to overcook seafood and who uses butter and herbs so balanced that it doesn't drown out the star. The house-made tartar sauce was some of the best I've tasted. Great with the fish and chips but honestly, would be awesome with just the fries. It's that good. The ambiance hits that cozy, mid-century-modern cabin vibe in all the right ways. For dessert, our bartender Andrea, recommended the lemon pudding as a light finish, and boy, was she spot on. Highly recommend. Don't miss this place. Was my first time stopping by this place on my way home from Stinson beach. Initially stopped her for a drink but decided to check out the food menu as well. Jesse was an amazing bartender w/ good conversation and great drink suggestions especially when I didn't know what I wanted. It was nice to hear that others coming in also were excited for his cocktails. I love the decor of this place and how cozy it feels. Had the clam chowder, which was good but a bit overdone with the bacon- it could have used more clams. Also had the calamari, which was fresh and a bit salty. The service was bad, and once the order was taken, we waited and waited but did not see waitress until she brought the bill. Told her we thought she forgot about us, and she made excuses. Also, there is a 5% surcharge for the restaurant staff (kitchen I assume) for a "living wage surcharge", which is bullshit. The food is overpriced as it is, and as a restaurant you should pay your own employees a living wage to begin with. An extra 5% means I tip the waitress less then. I'd give this a skip. read more

Due West Olema had been on my list to try after seeing it on Check Please Bay Area a few years back. This was a birthday dinner for me, so I was looking forward to a nice meal. The restaurant has great ambiance. It's an old farmhouse that's been renovated. It's very cozy with a beautiful full service bar. We started with cocktails and the fried calamari, which were really good. Unfortunately our main courses did not live up to the high expectations set by the appetizer. I ordered the NY strip steak (medium rare) and my wife ordered the pork chop. My steak was very tough and 40% of it was fat. My wife's pork chop was actually inedible - it was way overcooked, very dry, and she could barely cut it with the provided steak knife. We finished the meal with dessert. We shared a blueberry crème brûlée, which they brought out with a candle - a nice touch. I must say, the wait staff was very friendly and attentive. The whole experience would not have been such a disappointment if the main courses had been prepared better. It was just such a shame because Due West Tavern has a lot of good things going for it. read more

I have been to this restaurant several times over the years. I've always enjoyed it. It's got a great local rustic ambience with fine dining details. Last Saturday we arranged a dinner for 14 people in a semi private room in the back of the establishment. The server was professional, efficient and courteous. However, We had to order off a limited menu, which did not include any of the local favorites like catch of the day, fish and chips or a hamburger. Two of the items were pork chops and a New York steak. The pork chops and the New York were probably one of the worst meals I've ever had in my life. I was really quite perplexed that the chef would even send out a pork chop that was so overdone and dry as to make it unpalatable. The New York's were very, very tough. Several diners at our table could be seen selling away and getting their evening exercise. All in all for a large party and a big dining bill they clearly weren't prepared or didn't want large parties. read more

If you are headed to Point Reyes, you'll come through Olema. If you don't turn left or right on hwy 1, you'll drive into Due West Tavern's (fka Olema House) parking lot. This spot is worthwhile for what I see it as - a tourist area restaurant with a fantastic ability to tie your horse(s) out back after a 3+ mile ride from Five Brooks Horse Camp. It requires a brief but dangerous trip on the road. Dangerous because a-hats fail to yield to horseback riders and have zero consideration for horseback riders. It only takes 3-4 minutes to get to where we are going - BE PATIENT! I thought I saw there are Tesla chargers here but I couldn't verify it in my photos nor on Tesla's locations page. The prices are high for the food but this is a tourist location and it's in Marin County. $11 for a small bowl of white cream clam chowder with a very small amount of chopped clam pieces (no bread). It tasted good but was a cheaply made soup. The fish & chips seemed good and bountiful. The burger and fries seemed a good enough deal, too. I heard no complaints about the food. Alcohol about $15 per drink. Alcoholic cider pint was $12. The upstairs back patio was a fantastic dining experience. Our server did well taking care of our large group. I didn't like that the establishment believes they can charge a fee that is not gratuity. I don't patronize these kinds of establishments. Apparently there's a bakery/market here but I didn't see it. If you're into cornhole, hammocks, peaceful creeks, outside dining, they have you covered. read more

Loaded with seafood in a rich and thick tomato broth, topped off with a big ole hunk or grilled bread for dipping. The spicy chorizo notes really puts this dish over the top. Fried chicken sandwich was served on a soft bun with pickles and coleslaw. The chicken was crispy and seasoned with a hint of spice that I can't quite identify. All spice, or perhaps nutmeg. I subbed a salad for the fries and was pleased it came with a Caesar. Delicious tangy dressing and large chunks of parm made the salad stand out. My boys had the kids burger, which is the same size as the adult burger. Huge value! The fries were addictive! Perfectly crispy and seasoned just right. Both dishes were amazing. Olive oil cake with vanilla bean ice cream. It has a memorable way to celebrate hubby's birthday. Very friendly wait staff and not "upsaleslsy." Very friendly genuine vibe. Mixed reviews aside, it was CPBA (check please Bay Area) that had us book mark this spot. Why you say? The cocktails looked yummy but the steak frites was calling me from over the hills of Marin! We just finished taking the pooch to Limantour beach and he was puckered out. It was off hours aka between lunch and dinner and there was not a lot of folks in or outside. We opted for outside due to the dog. Service was prompt professional and available when needed. The inside looked very cool and a good place to hang in the evening. We sat under a canopy protected by the hot sun, but it wasn't much we could do about the pesky flys that were very aggressive through out the meal. The steak frites was not on the menu! Yet prominently pictured all on Yelp. The waiter said they do have a flank steak. "Great throw one down, medium rare and pile on the garlic Parmesan frites paleeeezzze! He tried to tell me the entre comes with some potato cake deal. OOh hail 2 the NO! I'll take the broccolini but the starch needs to be fries! Either the plate was huge, my appetite extreme, or that steak looked mighty lonely on that big-ass plate...with a few paltry non cheesed garlic frites that didn't help. The broccolini's was a bit too chard for my taste but...so hungry I ate them anyway. Halfway through the broccolini Bae could no longer control herself and complained "my husbands missing some cheese on those fries is he not? They brought a little bowl. I used some, she used the rest on her fish n chips. It's as if the bounty of the sea was on overdrive as the four huge fish fillets were spilling over the huge pile of fries with a decent helping of Cole slaw to boot. Compared to my paltry $40 steak and what looked like a serving of fries that fell off her hard to contain fish an chip platter only to be caught by my whopper of a plate like a net. Do you you remember that Sesame Street song "one of these things is not like the other... one of these things... does not belong... " Fortunately the steak was very very good. No salt pepper or supplied catchup required. I must have had the dull steak knife another reviewer had. What we loved about the place was the Bar and the service. But the food was short of the expectations that the ambiance, location and look of the place from outside evoked. The steak had to be returned the first time because of being too salty. The second attempt was better - but the meat was still too chewy for rare-medium. First time eating here but not my first time in Point Reyes. Been visiting Point Reyes my whole life. Dined here for my birthday dinner and I was not disappointed, in fact I was completely satisfied. The clam chowder was beyond delicious with fresh baked shreds of bacon. It hit the spot. I also ordered the Chocolate cake which is not pictured, and that was light and delicious. I didn't ask in advance how much I'd be charged for a plate of pasta in tomato sauce with broccoli and asparagus (I don't eat meat), and was shocked when the bill said $22. I'd estimate that the chef used one short stalk of asparagus, cut into booger-sized pieces, and a half floret of broccoli, similarly cut. The total volume of pasta, sauce, and "vegetables" was maybe one cup . It was a tiny, unsatisfying, and over-priced serving. Because I was with 3 friends, I didn't speak up. Restaurant, if you're reading this, you can refund me $10 on the card I used to pay you, and I'll feel a lot better. $12 for that pasta would have been more than enough for that mediocre dish. I wish I had taken a photo! ------ A week later: I've spoken 4 times by phone to the restaurant, and one of the managers, Annette, just told me that things are very busy there and they've had no time to issue a refund to my credit card and that I should continue to be understanding and patient.
