I ordered the fish & chips (fries by themselves are $9, WOW), and it was like eating a fish sponge soaked with oil, for $27. Service was not great, had to ask for simple condiments and they never came. Went to Due West, simply because of its distance from the hotel. It's a lovely space and the bartender knows how to make a drink. The food was meh at best. The oysters were almost room temp, after the first one I decided not to consume any more just in case. The Caesar salad was drenched in dressing, which I don't mind if it's good. This dressing had a strange flavor and the lettuce was never spun or dried off after washing. (Also was room temp, I wonder if the refrigeration was broken) The house buns were good with the sweet butter. I had the steak and my partner had the open faced pot pie. The steak was on a bed of lettuce with chimichurri salsa that ruined the whole dish (not the lettuce, the salsa) The flavors were off. The fries were, well, fries. Note to chef: maybe grill some vine grape tomatoes and have that garnish the steak.... The open faced pot pie, no top so prepare yourself, was ok. A drift from a traditional pot pie with a smoked chicken attribute for an additional cost, not worth the calories or the price. (Maybe note that the chicken is smoked) Again, bar, service and space was great to good. The food needs to change. It was confused and trying too hard. Dinner Saturday night. We were staying at the nearby Olema campground. We showed up around 5:30 pm. We were quickly seated inside. Liz was a very efficient waitress who answered many questions for us about the old building and surroundings. We started with shishito peppers and marinated olives. Both were right on point...best shishitos I've had yet!! The dipping mayo was perfect for the peppers. My wife ate all the olives except for a couple she shared with me. Next was the clam chowder. Very nicely balanced, tasty and a reasonable portion for just before dinner. All the dishes were very attractively presented. The halibut was very mild (I took a bite), probably too mild for me. But that was my wife's and she loved it. I'm usually the fish guy, but went for the steak with "frites". The steak was cooked medium well to well, exactly as I asked. Juicy, flavorful, and topped with some very yummy blue cheese. Steak was served on top of a mountain of truffle fries and some nicely dressed arugula. The truffle fries (a $2 upcharge) were delicious but I was too full of shishitos to eat more than a couple. Fries, arugula and leftover shishitos were boxed and given to my daughter the next day. She enjoyed the leftovers without even heating them up! Needless to say there was no room for dessert, but based on the meal I'm sure it would have been fantastic. Total price for this meal, including a very nice red ale for me, was $94 plus tip. Alcohol prices seemed quite high. The shishitos were the best bargain, at $7 for a heaping (!) plate. There are few restaurant choices in the immediate area of the Olema Campground. Cell reception is spotty in the area, and we took a chance on Due West without the benefit of Yelp reviews. I've been here every time I hiked Alamere falls, but today I got to try their clam chowder and it was sooo good. They have bacon in it, and although they may be stingy on the clams... the bacon adds so much depth to it. The eggs benedict was good and I loved the crispy tater tots. How does someone select zero stars. Do not go here if you are a person of color, these people are racist!!! Called ahead for my wife birthday to make reservations. Lady seemed nice on the phone, when we showed up, we gave our name. The hostess looked at the room and said "hmm uh I guess we can sit you over there." She pointed by the door. I didn't understand why she wanted to put us by the door for a reservation for a bday. I asked if we could sit anywhere else. Another lady said you can sit by the bar if you want. We decided to sit over by the bar. The waitress took 15mins to take our order. We order quickly for my pregnant wife. We waited and saw 2 other tables order after us. They ordered the same exact thing we did. They received there order after a 20min wait. I was so upset by this but my wife said it was here birthday and not to be upset. After 50mins walked over to the front host and to see the manager. She laughed and the other waitress shook her head at me. After 55mins, no food. The old building is painted an almost black dark green inside with original art work hanging on the walls. There is so much attention to detail that even the table legs are cute! (yes, I notice all of these things). The front of the bar face is upholstered in brindle cow hide. Retro music plays in the back ground and many foreign accents from hip and stylish diners can be heard at neighboring tables. The service: Perfect! They are all so friendly, yet not pestering. Our waiter recommended some great dishes. Service was prompt, but quiet and discrete. Cocktails: I had the Reyes cup. Delicious frothy gin and cucumber based. My husband had a nice Cabernet. The beer menu is one of the best I've seen! Dinner: We had the wedge salad to start. THE BEST WEDGE SALAD EVER! The Pt Reyes blue combined with fresh hard boiled egg, bits of house cured bacon... OMG, I could have been happy with just this. Our main dishes were Cioppino and the orecchiette pasta with mushrooms. The Cioppino was not hiding behind garlic. The seafood was all fresh and delicate in a sweet and tangy tomato base. The mushrooms on the pasta were earthy and wonderful with a hint of Madeira. I chose this place for my birthday dinner and it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. The food was delicious but it's not worth feeling like an outcast. I've been to most of the restaurants in Point Reyes but my experience here was the WORST. The moment we walked in, we got dirty looks. The vibe was negative immediately. The host was not welcoming and the server was rude. My party (of 4 total) and I observed how kind our server treated everyone else (all white customers) but treated us like shit. She ignored us and gave us a passive aggressive attitude whenever we needed anything (ie water). Her attitude was cold and irritable. But with her other white customers, she was so warm and attentive. We had to flag her down for water and felt as if I was inconveniencing her. When asked her to take a photo for us, "she replied, I'm busy now so I'll come back." We waited a 20 minutes and she never came. So I asked 2 more times and each time, "I'm busy." Meanwhile, she spends about 5 minutes chatting with other customers. For the remainder of the night, she did completely neglected us so I just took a selfie. We left and everyone ignored us. After dinner my friends said, "They were so racist at that restaurant!" After reading several negative review about this place, I couldn't agree more. read more

We had a delightful experience with our family and sampled many dishes. The clam chowder was excellent and fresh and creamy. The grilled brussel sprouts were perfect. The tavern salad was fresh and the lettuce size was great (some people don't like big lettuce so no concerns there). For mains we had fish and chips - basic dish but very well done. The grilled salmon was excellent served over broccolini and creamed cauliflower with a mint chutney on the salmon skin - it was a delight. The weekly special was chicken parm with greens and mashed potato - fresh and crispy and comforting. The beer selection was wonderful - they also had a wheat beer for me, our table also enjoyed a manhattan and the house red. The lemon pudding was ethereal and light and the volcano chocolate cake was perfect. The entire staff team was lovely and helpful and it was an unexpectedly superb and memorable family evening. Eat and drink next to a seashore treasure! Olema is an unincorporated community in Marin County. Its claim to fame may arguably be the fact that it is mentioned in The Young Blood's 1971 song titled "Hippie From Olema"! However, if you are a nature lover and an outdoorsy person, you may associate it with the fact that it is about a quarter of a mile away from Point Reyes National Seashore visitor center. There is also history there. I won't go into too much details here, but Olema was named after the Coast Miwok Native American village of Olemaloke, which means Coyote Village. You can see the recreated village of "Kule Loklo" (meaning "Bear Valley") at the Bear Valley Visitor Center. Those who may have explored the many hiking trails of Point Reyes National Seashore or are familiar with it in other ways would know what a national treasure it is. Add to all of the above appreciation for good food and Due West Tavern will come into play! Due West is located in a 1865 building next to Olema House that was recently renovated. It serves delicious food with very fresh ingredients. Having tried their steak, fish and chicken dishes, I can vouch for their freshness and taste! Don't like meat? Try their Vegetarian Nicoise; delicious! During our last visit, a friend of ours ordered the Due West Burger and loved it. I did not try it myself, but loved the fries that came with it!! Don't tell anyone, but I also attacked the fries that came with the other friend's steak and loved it even more!! Somehow fries taste better when you take it from someone else's plate! On the same visit we started with Charcuterie & Cheese Board and Broccolini and everyone in our group unanimously gave both items great reviews! Before I forget, I should say that the bar offers many beers on tap and the cocktails are great too, but make sure you have a designated driver please! It is a winding road back to San Rafael or San Francisco (on Highway 1). Olema is easy to get to from San Francisco. Just cross the Golden Gate and head north on Highway 101. My boyfriend and I love taking a drive on Highway 1 and going through Olema and Pt. Reyes Station especially with family living in the area. We saw Due West and decided to stop for a quick refreshment. Drinks from the bar were also excellent. The decor is casual western, with discrete lighting. I imagine it feels comfortable and intimate in the evening. Pretty MEH experience. Food we had: Tavern Burger - mediocre - cook was poor; well done on one side and rare on the other - we ordered it medium rare. French fries were outstanding: crispy, well seasoned, and very potatoey tasting. I could eat a bucket full of the fries. Calamari - mostly vegetables and very little squid. Under seasoned, but fried perfectly. Fish n chips - terrible. I was told it was fresh cod and it was mealy and flavorless - wet cardboard and very thin, low quality filets. The breading was thick, dry and greasy at the same time, (needs to be a beer batter and there was more breading than fish AND they left the bloodline in which makes it unpleasantly fishy tasting) under seasoned and totally the wrong texture for fish n chips. Fries again were outstanding. The tartar sauce it came with was really good. Had to request malt vinegar but they did have it. Had to add a fair bit of salt. 27 bucks for this was unacceptable. Garlic Parmesan fries- stellar. Truffle Mayo was barely truffled but the fries were really good. Fried chicken sando - nothing to write home about. Clam chowder. Delicious, but there were large clumps of flour that hadn't been mixed in properly and had become like little dumplings almost. Despite been cool error they were oddly tasty. The clams were really tender and very flavorful. Wedge salad was good. Caesar was good. Wedge was not a classic wedge - it was little gems lettuce and honestly better than the typical wedge. They have Pliny the Elder on tap and god was it good. Really excellent drink selection. The Victorian Lemonade was totally delicious. Service was mediocre. It was pretty busy but it took nearly 30 minutes to get our salads and soup. a few minutes later our entrees came out and then about ten minutes later our appetizers came out. That was pretty annoying. Wait staff was wonderful. Super nice and attentive but not annoying. Waiter was fully aware that the kitchen screwed up our order and was apologetic. Fortunately our dinner mates were wonderful and we were distracted enough. Ambiance would have been better for everyone else had we not been so loud. (Sorry folks - we were a big party and hadn't seen each other for a bit) Other than that ambiance was great. It was nice that they didn't have the TV on in the bar area where we ate. The decor is really pleasant, there's tons of outdoor seating and they have these massive propane heaters that put out a lot of heat. We are inside and it was nice. Everything is clean and our waiter was wonderful. But, when you pay that much money for food, the food should be outstanding. My daughter and I shared an appetizer and a couple of main courses, all of which were delish. We started with asparagus/goat cheese toast. The asparagus was in a lite olive oil dressing with thinly sliced pink radish. Our mains were an asparagus mushroom pot pie (sounds ordinary but was spectacular) and a bavette steak salad with Point Reyes blue cheese and mixed greens. The general level of culinary experiences here is higher than Detroit or South Jersey, so a restaurant here has to work harder than this to earn a 4. We had clam chowder, which was very good, as a starter. Great start. No drinks because I have been doing wine tastings for days, but Maybe I was missing that? For mains, I had salmon and my wife had steak. The salmon came with brussells sprouts and squash. The steak came with fries that we had upgraded to truffle parmesan fries, but the kitchen forgot. The server took the plate away and they seemed to put truffle oil and parmesan on in 2 seconds. It was all fine, absolutely nothing wrong with it, but just not memorable, you know? I was driving back to SF from a day hiking around Point Reyes when I happened upon this lovely restaurant. Many restaurants in the area close up early, so it was nice that this one was still open for a hungry hiker like me. At first sight, the place is cute, there was outdoor seating, limited indoor seating, and it's probably best to call ahead. To my luck, there was a small opening out front, and later on our awesome hostess Vicky (!!!) hooked it up with a table in their back outdoor space with a heat lamp. We started with the steamed mussels which were delicious and unique. The base flavor was something I had not experienced before with steamed mussels and it was lovely with the chorizo added in there. All the mussels were of good quality, and the bread they throw in there was delicious. I should also mention that we had an excellent waitress as well, she was very nice and a pleasure to chat with. For dinner we shared the steak frites (medium rare, delicious, chimichurri yum) and the shrimp fettuccine (creamy, unique, hit the spot, good size shrimp). The pasta was perfectly cooked and again, it wasn't just your basic fettuccine, there's an extra flavor in there that just makes it a wonderful dining experience for your palate. To add on to all of that, they also have an excellent wine selection to pair well with the different stages of your meal. The prices were appropriate and I am definitely gonna stop by here again, a cherry on top to my Point Reyes experience. read more

I've been here about 3 times and the food/wine list is pretty solid. Service is abysmal. Came here on a Sunday (yesterday) at 5:30 pm for dinner with a party of 10. We had no reservations as it was a last minute decision but it was mostly empty inside. We also had 6 kids between age 8 and 13. Even though there were tables they could have put together to accommodate us, the very rude, late 40's something aged hostess with the dark curly hair seemed to forget how to apply logic when seating people. She refused to sit us together despite the tables that stayed empty through our entire dining experience. We then decided to put the 4 older kids at one table and have the remaining 2 sit with the adults at another table 5 feet away, and she flipped. When we asked her what she thought 13 year olds were going to be doing at a table when their parents are 5 feet away, she couldn't articulate intelligently. She was just sour, so we sat at the ridiculous table assignments she dictated. Appetizers appeared with no plates for us to use. The kids ate ice cream with a knife because they did not bother giving them spoons. And overall, the staff looked generally annoyed that we were even there. We now jokingly call it "The restaurant that hates kids". We would likely go back as the food is decent and the annoyed looks on the faces of the staff when children walk in is kind of comical. read more

Wish I could leave 0 stars. I don't yelp much and usually only do when the service in phenomenal. However, this experience was terrible. Food was a 1/10. Overpriced. Think city prices with slow service, a kitchen that doesn't know how to course out a meal ( starters and main brought out together) and poorly seasoned overcooked food. Pork chop was so dry and lacking flavor. The steak I ordered to be medium rare ( more rare) came out medium well. To top it off I had the hostess come to me at the end and try to explain that it wasn't made medium rare because it would be bloody. Obviously I know that medium rare is bloody LOL I eat steak all the time. She proceeds to tell me that if the meat was medium well it wouldn't be pink at all. She either has no clue about meat temperatures, or was trying to subtly tell me off at the end. I worked in the service industry at high end restaurants, I know my meat temps. The server was nice but slow for a relatively empty place. I don't understand why she sent the hostess over at the end. Hostess left a sour taste in my mouth and will definitely not be back here for our next visit. I ended up paying $100 for two water downed overtly sweet drinks ( spicy Margarita was just a pineapple drink), a cheeseboard that we had to remind the server about, the prawns ( which were very good), and a beet salad. I'm surprised I've only recently tried out this spot after driving by so many times on the way out to a hike! It is definitely worth checking out and getting a wonderful meal in after a beautiful day out. We were here a little over a week ago and the salad offered had goood goat cheese dispersed with mandarin orange, and beets on dressed arugula. Very good if you're craving something with just a bit of quirk! The Miyagi oysters were a special and I was expecting them to be smaller than they were, but it must be a tad overgrown due to the pandemic / perhaps a dearth of visitors buying up oysters. Nonetheless they were very delicious and fresh with the two sauces included, one very acidic and spicy. You get more oyster , but I do prefer them smaller.
