First off, the service here was amazing! The staff was incredibly attentive and did a phenomenal job throughout our visit. I have celiac disease, and they were very knowledgeable about the gluten-free options. They even have a dedicated gluten free fryer for the fries, which made me feel so comfortable eating here. The vibe felt upscale yet still casual. It was raining, so we sat inside, but they also have cozy outdoor seating with fire pits that would be perfect for drinks with friends. Food-wise, the truffle fries (gluten free!) were fantastic and we loved the Cali-groni cocktail. The only downside was that the short ribs were a bit tough which is why I'm giving four stars instead of five.

Over the years, Bungalow 44 has become my favorite place in Mill Valley for a celebration meal -- which is funny, because when I first moved back to the area, it wasn't. Coming back to the Bay Area after living for years in a foodie town with innovative chefs like Renee Erickson and Rachel Yang and their stellar restaurants, Marin felt much quieter and smaller, and the food scene, too traditional. But consistency is an asset here, and Bungalow 44 delivers time after time. It ultimately won me over. It's now our go-to celebration spot. It's consistently good: good food, atmosphere, buzzy and celebratory on weekends, and has friendly, professional, timely service. We like coming occasionally during the week for oyster happy hour and we always reserve ahead to sit inside in the main room. Last night's meal: ahi starter, braised short rib, pork chop with wild mushrooms, good wines, and sticky pudding and a glass of tawny port were all spot on. Always delivers.

Cauliflower dish was enjoyed by all! Special praise for using the Romanesco!

Recently visited Bungalow 44 on a Thursday night. We got there in time to enjoy some of their happy hour oysters (Miyagi). We ordered a tray since there were a few of us. They were mostly good - but mediocre shucking. I'd rather pay more and have them served clean. We had a few cocktails while were there, and I found most of them pretty underwhelming. We shared them for tasting purposes, and I don't think any of us were overwhelmed. Not particularly creative (for the price) nor well executed. I will give a shout out for Irish Coffee though - that was among the best I have ever had - so keep that in mind. It is on the desert menu. Food was good. We tried a range of dishes, family style, so we could try a wider range of plates. We had cauliflower, hummus, fried chicken, and a few other dishes. Fortunately the food was better than the cocktails! Everyone enjoyed the food, but I think the fried chicken was the winner winner! Overall a pretty good experience! Sorry, only managed to get one photo - was too busy with the socializing!

When I seen they had $1 oysters for happy hour I had to make it a point to stop by while I was staying in Mill Valley! Also my favorite number is 44, deal was sealed! I sat at the bar and was immediately help by the bartender. I put my order for 6 oysters in while I checked out the menu. I had dinner planned elsewhere, I wanted to kill some time and hang out until then. Socializing at this bar with strangers was easy, everyone was so friendly and wanted to talk one another, I appreciate that! I met Barbra who said she goes every day and I witnessed dates, friends catching up, and men watching the game. It was a fun environment! They oysters were good. Mine didn't come with mignonette sauce, I had to ask the bartender for it. Unsure if that's normal or not. I also got a lesson in Oregon wine from the bartender so that was interesting. I left to dinner elated from meeting new friends, just like it should be!

    Fried chicken. Slaw was bitter.

B44 is the place to go in Mill Valley on a Monday for a quick happy hour because it's open and you can usually grab a seat at the bar, inside in a booth, or outside on their redone patio with heat lamps. There is a great bar inside with helpful tenders. There is an open kitchen so you can watch the chefs do their thing. The menu pretty much stays the same and has seasonal specials like a summer green gazpacho. Everything is tasty and while not original it's just fine. The hamachi poppers are like a twist on sushi. The Brussels are yummy. They definitely stepped up their service and expectations during quarantine and sold such awesome take out buckets, to go drink kits, and more. They don't really have much of a happy hour other than oysters for a buck, but still that's not nothing. On this visit, we had the kicken chicken, oysters, and salad.

This is my surprise meal of the year! This is an absolute 10/10. From the service, to the location to the food, all flawless. It mine and my wife's anniversary today and we just wanted to keep it simple. We wanted good food and a nice experience, we weren't after a Michelin star level experience. Well we found exactly that at Bungalow 44. As soon as we were greeted by our server Tony (who I highly recommend asking for), I knew we were in the right place. After ordering a dozen oysters (1$ each 5-6 PM!!) we let our server know that it was our anniversary and we wanted to take our time eating a drinking as much as we could. He was more than happy to facilitate that and also give great advice. Tony was one of the best servers I've had. He could have been straight out of French Laundry. Even taking the temperature outside into account for our orders. He guided us into some amazing starters like the Hamachi Poppers and the Crazy Corn. Both were grand slams. So good. We also tried the shrimp and grits and it stole the show. For entrees we tried the Filet and the Fried Chicken. As a southerner, fried chicken is gospel to me, and this is the best fried chicken I've had in the Bay Area. Not to mention the more than generous amounts of food. This is a true hidden gem. Even their mocktails were loved by my wife. And their cocktails even better by me. Hate I didn't take enough pictures but food was too good. Must try!!

We had a reservation for 7:30, arrived and were seated immediately at the counter as we had requested. It's been at least 3 years since we have dined here. We both ordered a cocktail and we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. I asked for sparkling water...I didn't ask, nor was it offered that we would be paying for a large bottle so that was slightly annoying. Plenty of restaurants offer in house sparkling water. We ordered the corn ribs. So incredibly delicious. Seriously. The quail was a VERY small portion. While I realize they are not chicken sized by any rate-we estimated there were probably 6-7 bites. Flavor was good. The salmon was also flavorful with a nice peppery arugula salad plus the starch. We shared the sticky toffee cake which was yummy. 3 cocktails, 2 dessert wines and it came to $220.00. Expected in Marin. Yes it was good, service was kind and prompt. I just have a hard time paying that much for a meal these days.

The food was very tasty and the staff were very friendly. From 5 to 6 PM oysters are only $1 and they were incredibly delicious. I especially liked the oyster sauce. Overall, the atmosphere was great. Definitely recommend!

Came here once in 2012. Food was good. Came back this week. Food was great! Can't wait to come back. Loved the vibe and the service.

Came here just for oysters and they did not disappoint. We ordered a total of 84 oysters for a party of 4 and all of them were fresh. The flatbread we used as "chaser" for the oysters were also good. Staff were quick, attentive and polite.

Service was fairly attentive - there was only one slight hiccup with one entree not coming out until around 5 minutes after everyone's dish so we had to wait. Pretty good selection of signature cocktails. The Liquid Gold was refreshing and not that strong. As for the food, we got the tartare, crab empanada, bungalow Benedict, and the phyllo crusted pork chop. The tartare was fresh and not fishy at all, but was missing some salt. Crab empanada was great. The cilantro avocado puree and aioli complemented the crab well. Eggs Benedict was standard. It was nice that it came with a model bakery English muffin, but nothing stood out. Pork chop was fried very well. Crispy exterior but soft inside. It was a pretty hefty cut as well. I expected more from the taverna fries but it seemed like standard frozen fries. The chimichurri sauce was good but had an aioli texture, which was weird but still good taste wise. To end, the butterscotch budino was fairly light and had a good sweetness. All in all, the lunch was still enjoyable especially with the view. I do wish there was that wow factor in some of the dishes to better match the price.

Dinner in the main dining room is where things shift. It's loud, full of big party tables, and conversation can get tough. Still, the food has its highlights. The onion rings (really more like a mountain of crispy onion strings with a homemade dipping sauce) are a must‑start. The scallops over risotto -- a special that night -- were fantastic, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The ribs had great seasoning but were unfortunately more fat and bone than actual meat, which was disappointing for a dish that should be a crowd‑pleaser. Dessert is where Buckeye wins you back. The s'mores pie is the indulgent treat you didn't know you needed, and the baked lemon pudding leans more toward a lemon cake layered with custard and huckleberry jam -- bright, comforting, and memorable. After living in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2005, I had just learned about Madcap and was thrilled to celebrate a friend's birthday there. From the moment we were greeted by Kim at the host stand -- warm, poised, and genuinely welcoming -- we felt special. Anticipation built immediately. Our four-course prix fixe menu was printed on artisanal, handmade-feeling paper -- textured, elegant, and thoughtful. Welcome Snacks Before the first official course, we were surprised with a small welcoming assortment. I couldn't name each component, but they were colorful, beautifully balanced, and layered in flavor and texture -- playful yet precise. A lovely crescendo into what followed. First Course Nicasio Valley egg, lemongrass spuma, pine nuts. We chose to add the optional Black Périgord truffle. When pierced with my spoon, the bright yellow yolk blended like a brushstroke into the white of the egg. The spuma (an airy, savory foam created by aerating a sauce) added a delicate citrus-herbal lift to the richness of the egg. The pine nuts brought delightful contrast texture. Oh, and that exquisite toast! Elegant and harmonious. The delicately-shaved truffle provided a heavenly mouth-feel. Second Course Winter salad, shima aji, orange olive oil or Sunchoke tortelloni, spinach, shiitake, thyme jus One companion chose the vibrant winter salad -- stunning in color and textures including shima aji, a premium Japanese fish. I chose the sunchoke tortelloni. Although I'm usually not a fan of al dente pasta, here it worked beautifully to contrast the creamy filling. The green-tinged spinach tortelloni were visually striking and balanced by the earthy shiitake and fragrant thyme jus. Third Course Mount Lassen trout, abalone & carrot risotto, lobster cream or Flannery beef ribeye, artichoke, Banyuls, black garlic We all chose the trout. The fish was executed perfectly -- caramelized, crisp exterior, yet it flaked effortlessly into large, tender pieces with the fork. The carrot risotto leaned slightly sweet for my palate, though beautifully textured. The tiny slivers of abalone, however, were surprisingly overcooked and chewy. The lobster cream had a thinner, almost broth-like consistency and didn't meaningfully elevate the dish. For reference, Banyuls (used in the ribeye preparation) is a French fortified wine like port from the Roussillon region that creates deep, slightly sweet reductions that complement richer meats. Fourth Course Shiso panna cotta, pineapple vanilla gelée. The panna cotta was softly set, cool, and subtly sweet -- a lovely, light finish. The Japanese mint herb of shiso was subtle. The crumble beneath added wonderful contrast and texture. A small piece of pineapple was firmer than expected, though the overall composition remained balanced and refreshing. With it, I had a decaf Americano. It was so smooth and flavorful I drank it black -- and enjoyed every sip. Post-dessert course We were pleasantly surprised with a pearlized white box of what appeared to be handmade confections: caramel, a sugar-dusted berry gelée, and a ganache-filled chocolate truffle. The unexpected welcome bites and post-dessert confections made the four-course prix fixe feel even more generous and thoughtfully orchestrated. Madcap is an experience of delightful visual artistry and intentional composition. The overall execution, ambiance, and hospitality created a memorable evening. P.S. While I typically eat gluten- and dairy-free, making those substitutions would have fundamentally changed the menu. For this celebratory evening, I chose not to alter the chef's composition. We visited on 2/26/26.
