Egg drop soup, little puzzled why a Vietnamese restaurant doesn't have Vietnamese soups instead of Chinese soups. Could have been better.
    Mark F.

Ordered the combination bahn mi sandwich which came with a small cup of egg drop or hot and sour soup. The bread on the sandwich was excellent, and you can tell it was baked fresh at the restaurant. But overall, I wasn't as fond of the sandwich because I thought it lacked some flavor that I am used to or like a lot more at some of my other Vietnamese restaurants. I had the egg drop soup which was good but again The taste was a little off, mostly likely due to the way this restaurant makes their soups. Soups. I kind of also wondered why there were Chinese type soups at a Vietnamese restaurant. I would love it if there was some Vietnamese soups as the appetizer.

I've been here a few times and have also ordered through Uber Eats and DoorDash, but I never got around to writing a review--until now! I usually go for the chicken or ribeye beef bánh mì, and the portions are just right--not too much, not too little. The bread is made fresh daily, which really makes a difference. I also appreciate that there's some flexibility with customization if you're not a fan of certain traditional garnishes or want to add extras. Their Vietnamese and Thai dishes are consistently good as well--I tend to stick with their curry, which never disappoints. On this visit, I stopped by for Vietnamese iced coffee and some baked goods. I tried the shortbread cookies; they weren't soft like I had hoped (their lemon cookies are soft and delicious- my husband had it from here before), but that's pretty typical for shortbread. The iced Vietnamese coffee is one of my favorites here--perfectly balanced, not overly sweet and not too bitter. The café has a nice setup with a decent amount of seating--great if you want to stop in for coffee or sit down and enjoy a meal with family. The staff are always friendly!

Had the pad see ew at NG Cafe and it was amazing. Perfectly cooked noodles, great flavor, just 10/10 all around. The service was just as good. The staff were super friendly and even brought out a free bread appetizer, which was a really nice touch. Everything about the visit was great. I'll definitely be coming back!

It's not even 25% full and this is ridiculous. Small slivers of chickens.

Disappointing portions despite decent flavor. This visit felt like a tale of two dishes. 2 stars = It could have been better, and it definitely could have been better. I ordered to go. On the positive side, the Pork Bahn Mi was pretty good. The bread was fresh and chewy, the veggies were tasty, and the pork had good flavor. That said, the meat portion was noticeably light. It wasn't terrible, but a few more pieces of pork would have gone a long way. The real letdown was the Chicken Pad Thai my friend ordered. Pad Thai typically runs anywhere from $13-$19 or more around town, and this place caught my attention by pricing it at the low end ($13). Unfortunately, once you opened the to-go container, it was clear why. The portion was shockingly small--maybe 25% of the container filled--and there was barely any chicken. It honestly looked like a kid-sized portion. I have actually seen this trend with other places where you get less when you order to go. At the store I inspected the order and noticed this, so I mentioned it to the staff and was met with a shrug and silence. When I brought it to my friend (who's petite and loves pad thai), even she immediately asked, "Where's the meat?" She finished it and was still hungry--and that's never happened as she eats Chicken Pad Thai weekly. She confirmed with me that she was not pregnant (lol) so I ended up sharing my sandwich with her. She said it tasted fine, but nothing special, and definitely not worth $13. While the Bahn Mi was solid, the overall experience screamed shrinkflation. The lower price point felt like a bait-and-switch once you see the portion size. We've had Chicken Pad Thai at places like Sip Saam, 888, 1618, and others for slightly more money, but with far more food and chicken. We enjoy trying new spots, but this was a one-and-done for both of us. Saving a few ounces of noodles and a couple pieces of chicken might minimally help costs in the short term, but it hurts customer trust and satisfaction long term. Fair portions matter just as much as flavor--and unfortunately, this place missed that balance. The lack of response when I mentioned the small portion size made me feel dismissed as a customer which made the experience worse. Priorities, I guess.

This place lives up to the banh mi hype with good pricing you should always order extra Togo for home ! I ordered the grilled pork banh mi, bread was fresh and crispy. Pork was umami bomb with lemongrass notes. I only wished it had more meat. The spring rolls were also in the tiny side. The surprise was the shortbread cookies, I dare you eat try to ear just one! Service is fast casual in a nice modern interior.

NG Cafe is run by a very sweet couple and it is influenced by Viet and Thai cuisine. I got the Vietnamese egg rolls and Bun Cha Ha Noi they were great. The egg rolls were perfectly crunchy, crispy, and full of flavor. The Bun Cha Ha Noi was very unique; the pork cutlets had good texture but maybe could have had more umami. What the pork cutlets lacked was made up in the sauce as well as the rice vermicelli, which is a weakness of mine. Though a little pricey, Ng Cafe provides a nice, cozy atmosphere to chow on your favorite Thai and Viet bites.

The BEST EVER hot and sour soup. Has onion undertones, it's never too thick and has the perfect tang.

This is definitely the best Asian restaurant in the United States. I would eat here everyday if I could. The service is always outstanding too. Family owned and operated, fresh and delicious ingredients, quality and care obviously surrounds this place. Don't skip out on the Vietnamese coffee either!

A very cute family-owned Vietnamese restaurant! They had a large menu and also had some unique pastries and drink selections, service was so sweet. The restaurant itself was so nice, and well kept together. Food was home cooked with love!!

The food: I have ordered takeout here for years but I ordered in and switched it up for a Pork Banh Mi this time. It was delicious. I pulled off the fresh jalapeños but the jalapeño spread eventually added up and overwhelmed me. The soup and lemonade cooled me right down though. The vibe: it had been years since I was last inside and they have really switched to a cafe feel in that time with a more limited menu and different look inside. Overall I liked it and it does differentiate them others in the market. Service: the staff is always friendly and food was on the table super quick.

Highly recommend!! The cafe is super cute and the service is friendly. Some tips when ordering- if you like the taste add pate to your banh mi! It adds so much to the sandwich and its a small add. Also, the shortbread cookies are AMAZING! Grab a box before heading out, you won't regret it!

We just had the best Bánh Mì sandwiches ever at NG Cafe in Austin (Parmer and 35). Grilled Pork and Pepper Shrimp. The owner, Angie, makes her own bread. She was extremely nice and even gave us 2 pieces of their homemade Sesame Hollow Bread when we left.

    Singapore noodles

NG cafe is a decent Vietnamese restaurant in Austin, they offer a variety of dishes (such as fried rice, noodles, etc). I ordered Singapore noodles and it tasted pretty okay, the portion is def on the smaller side. The interior feels hot and I think the AC was not working properly. Parking is widely available but the lot fills up quick, I ended up parking on the other side of the restaurant. Service is decent. Worth trying but probably won't visit again.

    Banh mi tofu

A very quaint and cute French Vietnamese cafe vibe. The music and decor are calming and inviting. The staff are kind and very friendly. We got banh mi tofu and banh mi combination. The bread was excellent you can tell it is fresh made daily. My husband felt the meat and pate was lacking a little bit in quantity. The vegetables are incredibly fresh. He said overall not quintessential viet taste but overall very good. I felt the tofu was fried very well and super fresh. We did feel price was a little high but for whatever reason food tends to be higher priced in Austin. A Costco bottle of coconut water is $5! I believe it's a $1 a bottle from Costco directly. Oh also, they give you egg drop soup or hot and sour as an appetizer when you dine in

The…read moreThai basil leaves were absolutely ginormous, and they gave us plenty of them alongside very fresh limes, which I appreciated. The bowl itself came loaded with meat--they definitely weren't skimping to save money here. The meat-to-noodle ratio felt great, and every bite actually had substance instead of leaving me fishing around for toppings. As for the broth, I landed somewhere in the middle. It wasn't quite as clear or light as I personally prefer, leaning toward a fattier, milkier undertone that almost reminded me of a Vietnamese pho take on tonkotsu. The flavor itself was undeniably very good, but the richness may have been a bit too much for me personally. One way I usually judge how much I love a pho broth is whether I want to sip the bowl down to the very end, and this one wasn't quite light enough for me to want to do that. I've had richer and deeper pho flavors elsewhere, but I still appreciated the flavor profile here and could absolutely see why this place is so popular. It feels hearty, comforting, and satisfying in a way that clearly resonates with many people. Despite how packed the restaurant was, the atmosphere ended up being surprisingly pleasant. Service moved very quickly, which honestly impressed me given how busy everything felt. Even with the crowd, I didn't dislike the spacing or setup at all--the restaurant still felt comfortable, and the sound of people enjoying their food all around added to the lively, welcoming energy rather than making it feel overwhelming. Overall, Pho Phong Lưu ended up being one of those places where I completely understood the hype, even if it didn't become my personal favorite pho spot. While the broth leaned richer than my preference, I still enjoyed the experience and definitely look forward to trying other dishes next time.

One unique thing was the noodles in the Sip pho bowl--they were slightly thicker than vermicelli, which was different but not a big deal. For drinks, I ordered the Matcha Green Thai Tea. It had an interesting flavor combination, but the matcha taste was a bit overpowered by the green Thai tea. It was still enjoyable, though slightly too floral and sweet for my personal preference.
