You know Catfish is tricky because it can taste very earthy and have that weird texture at times. As I write this review, I stand near the host stand waiting for the pickup order I placed over an hour ago. I live a one-minute walk away and left a few minutes after my order was "ready for pickup". This place probably has more traffic during the day when the courts and office buildings are occupied. It's located downtown so parking can get interesting. We arrive around 9/9:30. Our waitress, Candy, was nice and friendly though not very attentive considering there were only four customers inside. I had to kind of yell across the dining hall for utensils and she yelled across the dining hall looking for a bartender. The drinks were good (Long Island and a glass of wine). The music was GREAT. We thought there might be open mic or a live band (which is why we came) but even the station there were playing was awesome. Biggest complaint is that they were out of everything and I was forced to choose something I didn't want. The guy on the phone was kind of abrupt but I brushed it off because they had such great reviews. I ordered the catfish platter with fries and collard greens as my sides. When I arrived to get my food the guy was still kind of dry and couldn't immediately find my order. I had about a five minute wait. Now to the food. The catfish was cooked well and seasoned well. I give it a 9. The collard greens were flavored well. I give them a 10. The fries were good but they were a little soggy. They would be a 10 if they had been hit and crispy so I give them an 8. We loved everything here! We came for a staycation to Baltimore and saw this store recommended through DoorDash. At first, given the rating, I thought it would be typical of this area, but as a Southerner they did me proud! Everything had its on distinct flavor! My chicken, fish, and shrimp (all fried) were clearly seasoned differently and reminded me of home --we know you can't use the same batter for everything! Jury Duty sucks... but had it not been for jury duty, I would not have found this place. With limited lunch options around the courthouse, I managed to find this place, which is a short walk away. I looked on the menu and knew exactly what I wanted. I came here for lunch with my jury duty pal, who also happens to go to my church. I ordered the Bayou Pasta and she ordered a hamburger with fries. Service was slow. I ended up getting my food first even though I ordered after her. I choose not to eat right away because we were going to eat together inside the restaurant but I did taste a little bit the pasta. It was very good. After waiting for 30 mins, we find out that they didn't even start her order. We were running out of time for lunch so she decided to get her money back. We ended up having to stop somewhere quick so she could grab some food. Once we got back inside the courthouse, I was able to finish the pasta. It was very filling and tasty. For $11, it was a very good choice that didn't break the bank. I feel bad because I suggested that we come here and the experience was not the best. I'm trying to be understanding because it appears that it was only 2 people working. However, with the lunch crowd and being one of a few carry-out options around the courthouse, it would do them good to have another person working to decrease wait times. I love that this is a black owned business because I love supporting. I also like that the prices are reasonable. I would like to see this place thrive and stay in business because I enjoyed my food but with this spotty service, I don't forsee it. The crowd was a mixture of old and young just trying to have a good time. The open mic was pretty well organized and most of the people deserved a few good snaps. Seating: it was crowded but luckily we knew someone who had a table. We invited ourselves to sit with them. Reluctantly, they agreed. So no wait for us. There was a 5 dollar cover charge but worth it in my opinion. This place is black owned and I was glad because the food was classic soul food that was amazing. Food: I tested out the stuffed salmon. It was well cooked and seasoned. No complaints and would strongly recommend. Service was good. My food came out hot and correct. I'm really not hard to please. The place isn't the most upscale but is cozy. Typical hole in the wall which happens to be my preference. Overall I would go again. The food was good. The vibe was amazing and the crowd was drama free. That goes a long way in Baltimore. My only complaints were the bathroom could have been bit cleaner and parking sucked. Wow! Every single aspect of this meal was spectacular. The crab cake was broiled to perfection and the chef spiced it much better than the usual fare. The collards were delicious and well made--grandmothers in the region would be impressed. They added in cornbread that had the polish of a restaurant but the familiarity of a home-cooked batch. We ordered more crab cake halfway through our first meal--it was that good. We ate outdoors, but I said hello to the kitchen staff before leaving. It was clear that they had so much pride in producing the dishes. Plus, local politicians were dining and being interviewed while we were there. It was such a fantastic Baltimore experience (on Juneteenth!) and a New Phase in my appreciation of DMV food, pun intended.
