Thought it was herbal soup, but it was some kind of seaweed soup. I was hungry, so everything tasted good, except for the fried fish (a bit dry). Apparently the new chef is from the same hometown as my family, which is part of the reason why they keep coming back; they claim they can't find the same flavors and ingredients elsewhere. Personally, probably because I grew up here and not in China, I don't necessarily share the same sentiment as my family. I don't care much for that stone pot rice, however, I do enjoy the soup! This dish has a good variety of seafood. Seasoned well. Also delicious. (3) Eggplant with spicy sauce (4/5). Eggplant was cooked perfectly. I would prefer a bit more sauce. But it was still very good. Steamed rice and complementary soup is served with the meal. The restaurant is not very big. Tables are placed very close to each other. It feels a bit cramped dining in. Having just come back from Hunan days earlier, I can tell you the food here definitely holds up. I've tried two other Hunan spots in Alhambra over the years that don't quite match up to the food I ate in Hunan. Be careful of spice levels here as regular spicy is very hot and even the milder levels are still quite hot, and I say this as someone who eats spicy food daily. The restaurant is run by a brother sister duo and her daughter and the service was exceptional and unusually above average. She was very attentive and asked for feedback for each dish, offering to adjust seasonings and spices on the way. We loved the food so much that we ordered extra to take home. If you love spicy food or authentic Hunan food in general, this is a must go.

We decided on their Pickle and Sour Fish Soup, it wasn't a bad choice and we had plenty left over to take home where I'll add seafood for another meal or two. The service was excellent especially since the server spoke hardly any English, fortunately one of us was totally literate in Mandarin Chinese. In the most convoluted sequence of restaurant occupancy in the annals of Chinese restaurants in the United States, Noodle King has supplanted Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch in Alhambra in the space formerly occupied by a different restaurant named Noodle King in the 1980s and 1990s. There's a lot to explain here. I used the compound name for the previous occupant because the name on the front entrance was Rice Hero, the back entrance said Hero's Kitchen and the digital menus said In Joy Lunch. I say the old restaurant was supplanted, not replaced, because the old restaurant sort of still hangs around, with a tiny sheet of paper with all 3 old names taped to the front door, and many old dishes still on the menu. Why the three names I don't know. In Joy Lunch had been a popup that operated during lunch hour serving Dongbei food in a space in YYDS Fried Strings in Rosemead. In Joy Lunch then struck out on their own last year with this space in Alhambra, adding the new names. The old Noodle King had been a Taiwanese noodle fixture before moving out in 2003. Since the new Noodle King also serves some of the Rice Hero/Hero's Kitchen/In Joy Lunch items, the same name seems to be just a coincidence. But despite holdover menu items the staff clearly say they're a new restaurant, with the Noodle King himself greeting you at the front entrance and the signage in both front and back now say Noodle King.
