My trips to the LA area have a few go to's. Mandarin Deli is one of them. Located in Monterey Park, which is a haven for Asian cuisine (for those who don't know), Mandarin Deli is absolutely not the fine dining, fancy establishment. Rather, it's that hole-in-the-wall spot in a plaza where you can have no fear of what you're wearing, no worry that you're about to possibly get messy as you devour your meal with all the delicious sauces present, and it's in a plaza where there is usually ample parking to be found. And of course, the delicious food. I was introduced to this spot by a former classmate of mine who has lived in the LA area for decades now. We had your typical family meal where we shared some dishes. I don't quite remember what we ordered, but I did remember thinking this was a solid option and was intrigued for more visits. And on one of those future visits, I tried their chili oil noodles and there really has been no turning back since. There is a certain "q q"-ness for these noodles where you can tell, they're fresh, they're hot, and they really mix well with the sauce you stir the noodles in upon getting your order. This has been my go-to order every time since. Point of transparency - I like spicy food. Mandarin Deli certainly has other dishes not as spicy, if that's the preferred option. On my most recent visit, I also ordered the scallion pancakes as a side appetizer to my chili oil noodles. This also tasted fresh, and with the leftover sauce I had after I devoured the chili oil noodles, all of a sudden I had an amazing dip for my scallion pancakes. Needless to say, this was an amazing meal. Even though I don't quite remember my order from my first time visiting this establishment, the point is it's pretty impossible to go wrong here with the food. Also keep in mind that the boss of the place is an auntie-like figure who really comes across like someone looking out for you and treating you like family. But also, it's not like they have servers working all the tables, so patience and understanding might be needed if you see they're busy. But the service is moving as quickly as they can - they're really trying here, and yes the food is worth it. One note: no credit cards here. But it's also not cash only. They accept Zelle! I'm rarely in the LA area these days and it's been years since I've dined at Mandarin Deli. I was passing by and was happy to see that they're still around. I always get the spicy beef noodle soup. I love their house made knife cut noodles, the broth, pickled cabbage and generous portions. I was pleasantly surprised that they really haven't raised their prices at all. It was $11.50 for this bowl which is such a killer deal in this inflationary economy, especially in the LA area. The restaurant still looks the same and is still a mom and pop run restaurant that dishes out great traditional Chinese fare. read more

I haven't been back to this restaurant for at least 3 years and today is the day . Simmered flavor noodle/大滷麵：I asked for all veggies and they gladly complied. The noodle is chewy and has a really texture. The soup is warm and delicious. Live it Spicy sliced beef: Oh mine, this is really good. It went well with the noodle that I ordered but I think it will taste really good with rice and shao-bing (or even wrapped in a tortilla ). Very affordable for yummy food! I needed takeout and was recommended this place. I got the dan dan noodles, kung pao chicken, and stir fried string beans. They were all very delicious but were too oily for my taste, especially the string beans. The dan dan noodles had a peanut butter and spicy flavor so it was my favorite. The string beans and chicken were flavorful as well. This is a mom and pop shop with good service. There are tables for casual dining but it's also a great takeout option. This cute little hidden gem is a local favourite in Monterey Park. Food - 5/5 - The hand cut noodles are made fresh in house and you can taste the difference! I love how chewy and thick each strand is. I love getting either the dandan noodles or the black bean noodles! Price - $ - The prices here have increased since they opened but its still relatively cheap in proportion to how big each bowl is. Service - 3/5 - The service is quite quick and they primarily leave you alone. The auntie who works the front is very fun and friendly. Ambiance - 3/5 - The vibes are quite comfortable as the interior looks as if it has not been updated since they opened, in a good way. It feels a bit like a time capsule as the restaurant has a homey vibe. Location - 3/5 - There is a parking lot with lots of spaces but it is in a plaza so there may or may not be parking close to the restaurant. I stopped by for a late lunch. I found a table for two with no problem. I've been coming here for a long time and I absolutely love the flavor of vegetable fried rice here. Today I got an order of pork leek dumpling and chicken fried rice. The dumplings come with a sauce too. I really like the flavor of dumplings here. The skin can be a bit thick but I still like it a lot. I believe it's cash only and there is free parking available in the plaza. The only downside for me is I don't speak Mandarin so I have to come with someone who speaks it. Very nice auntie and uncle. I'll stop by soon to buy frozen dumplings! read more

I've tried this spot 2x and so far im pleased with the food. It is very tasteful and it's a decent portion. Their prices are ok. There is a private lot but sometimes it can get super packed making it difficult to find parking so sometimes the street is an option. There are a few other restaurants around there and also dollar tree. They don't accept credit/debit just cash. I did see they gave a customer a key to use the restroom somewhere outside of the restaurant. (Just fyi) Service isn't the best it's not rude just lacks attentiveness. read more

Our go-to for authentic northern Chinese food because their handmade noodles and flour-based doughy foods (dumplings, pancakes) are supreme. The main proprietress is super sweet and generally remembers you and your order if you become a regular. It's easier if you can speak to her in Chinese, but she tries her best to communicate in English with non-Chinese-speaking patrons. This small establishment was an unexpected nice find. We decided to order a few items for a late lunch. The owner/server is super nice. The green onion pancakes were darker than you normally see but it was crunchy and tasty. This dish reminded me of a flattened version of the "Chinese donuts". I like it. The beef roll cakes were decent.  The paste inside is usually a little sweet and tangy. This establishes didn't have it and was missing that as a dip, as well. The best item we got was their red oil wontons.  I especially enjoyed the savory oil/soy sauce mix.  It went perfect with the boiled wontons. I could had eaten a dozen more! I would skip the noodles dishes -- the soup base is off. The broth seems like veggie based flavored with a lot of soy sauce. read more

Lately I've been trying all sorts of new noodle places near me and in the nearby Los Angeles areas. I saw that this noodle place had really good prices and a large menu. The pictures looked nice, so I came here with my parents for brunch. We were the only people there, which was nice, given that it was a very small restaurant. The heat wasn't turned on, and it was kind of a cold day. But the most important part of the experience was the food. We ended up ordering combination potstickers, zhajiangmian, and house special noodles. The dumplings came with 4 meat potstickers and 4 vegetarian potstickers. The vegetarian potstickers were unlike anything I've had before, and they were quite tasty and fresh. The meat potstickers are fairly standard, but still good. The zhaijiangmian was good, salty without being too salty. My favorite dish, and the reason I gave this restaurant 5 stars, was the house special noodles. The noodles were hand pulled, the soup was warm and not too salty, and the dish also had eggs, mushrooms, pork, and tomatoes. A perfect soup noodle dish for a cold winter day. Vegetarian here! 4/5 Stars for some Chinese food that hits the spot! The food: This was our second time at Mandarin Deli, and the food is as I remember it from years back! We ordered the Vegetable Noodles (素菜炒手拉麵) and I asked for them to be dry as opposed to soup-based and selected the hand-pulled noodle version. It seems like you can certainly ask for a soup version (素湯麵) or with the option of knife-cut noodles (刀削麵). The Vegetable Noodles came piping-hot and stir-fried in soy sauce bean sprouts, cabbage, and carrots. I also ordered handmade Vegetable Potstickers (素鍋貼) that came in a serving of eight and was filled with an assortment of vegetables, shiitake mushrooms, and tofu. Everything was flavorful and delicious, albeit on the oilier and saltier end of the spectrum. I believe everything I ordered also happened to be vegan, as long as no eggs were used in the dough. Everything else: Mandarin Deli is a classic Monterey Park mom and pop/hole-in-the-wall type of restaurant. The food as as authentic as it can get, but the interior is a bit old-school and an all-cash (no credit card) location. You'll likely need to speak Mandarin in order to order exactly what you want, but the menus do come with both English and Mandarin, so you should be able to get by with pointing at what you'd like. If you're also vegetarian/vegan, make sure to specify you'd like everything vegetarian (素sù) and if you're vegan, verify that that no eggs were used. You can also order a pack of handmade frozen dumplings (50 pieces/pack), buns, and wontons to-go. The restaurant shares the same parking lot as the Dollar Tree, another restaurant, and bubble tea shop, but there was still plenty of parking on Saturday at noon. Keep in mind that prices have risen starting Jan 1, 2023, so add $1.50 to all the items on the menu. Overall, I would certainly stop by Mandarin Deli again when I'm in the area. There's quite a few other vegetarian options on the menu that I haven't tried yet, so I'll definitely be back again! read more

This has been my family's favorite spot for years!!! I am a big beef noodle soup lover and i LOVE their spicy beef noodle soup. It's more on the sour side, with lots of pickled veggies. The beef is always super tender and soft and they're usually generous with the portions. I sometimes dine in but mostly do take out! It's a small shop but the service is always prompt and sweet for a mom and pop shop. I always recommend this place to friends visiting the 626 and want good soup!! read more

We wanted to have a quick lunch at a restaurant with ample parking and decided to try here. The shopping plaza parking lot was more full than expected, even with Elite Restaurant closed but we managed to find a few open spaces. We ordered the Leek and Fish dumplings, Kung Pao Chicken, and Tomato and Egg noodles. All of the dishes were really good. The filling in the dumplings was generous, flavorful and moist and their dipping sauce added a nice spicy kick. Their Kung Pao Chicken was pretty spicy cooked with both red peppers and jalapenos but the flavor was perfect especially if eaten with rice. We also really liked their tomato and egg dish. The noodles tasted like fresh made noodles with a nice chew. Sorry I forgot to take pictures of our dishes. Service was pretty quick. Food was good. We will go back to try other dishes. read more

Authentic small hole in the wall family run joint. Reasonably priced and great food. We walked in and there's one gigantic table in the room with tall ceilings. The room actually felt disproportioned from the ceiling to all consuming table in the middle. We served ourselves with tea and drinks. Food was very tasty. We loved everything we ordered. The fried pork and minced meat with pickled veggies over rice is put together like how I remember from my childhood. The chili noodle is fresh and tasty. Mandarin Deli is a hole in the wall Chinese restaurant serving excellent food. My husband was a bit sketched out when he saw the place as it looks like an old school, no frills kind of place, but the food is great. They had a couple of other customers come in to get take out while we were there but we were the only people who were eating in there at 6 on a Saturday night. The owner was very sweet and gave us a few recommendations on the menu. I picked this place as I had a strong craving for zhajiangmian and it didn't disappoint. The noodles were silky with good texture, and the sauce was flavorsome without being salty. The dan dan mian here was also excellent, not too spicy or salty. The owner also recommended the green onion pancake to us. This was very crisp and added a nice contrast to our noodle dishes. The restaurant is cash only. Prices are very reasonable. This is my hole in the wall go to place for a homecooked Chinese meal to take home or eat there. They finally allow dine in now. Okay for small groups and their biggest table seats 6. I love their flour products because they make it fresh: dumplings and noodles and green onion pancakes. They are down to just the husband and wife team since the pandemic. Best on the go and I recommend ordering over the phone for faster service. Parking is not a problem but it does get packed during peak hours. There is in door seating and inside is very small. Personally I would order food there and get a drink from R&B boba shop next door and eat there instead for better vibes (they allow outside food). Got the "Minced Meat Noodle" (Zhajiangmien) and it was not bad. It also comes with sliced cucumber. Everything mixed very well but it was a bit too salty for my liking. "Special Oil Noodles" (Dan Dan Mien) was personally my favorite. Not salty, the oil spice is there, everything mixed well, and the heat does build up. It hurts me to write this review because I used to love this place but it needs be done. What I experienced yesterday should not have happened because I feel that I was a long time customer, but it was really hard to digest what I went through. It's not about entitlement but enough was enough. I've been their customer for more than 10 years and as a long time customer, ofcourse, every now and then there's a misunderstanding with my orders but for the most of it, it's always acceptable. And, after being a customer for a long time, the owner (the lady) has gotten comfortable with me and by comfortable, I mean "soft" shouting or yelling at me in some occasions as a way of "taking something out" on me because I was an easy target. One time, I came in at 7:30pm and I got shouted by the lady for not knowing that they closed early that night (they usually close at 8pm during covid). For her just comfortably raising her voice at me I thought it was a little unnecessary but I could tell she was having a bad day so I let it go. For lack of a better term, It was always in one ear and out another for me. Until last night. It's been over 1 month since my last visit so last night, I placed a phone order and it was taken by someone new (usually it's always the lady who picks up the call). I ordered the usual, came in to the restaurant, she took a peek out of the kitchen and saw me, she looked a little annoyed, I said hi, no response then the guy who took my order handed my change then off I went. I got in the car, opened the to go box, and it was a wrong order. I went back inside and told the guy what happened and told me to wait. He went in to the kitchen, the lady came out and started yelling at me in Chinese. I was a little irritated but I didn't say anything. The guy tried to explain it in English to me and I told him what I ordered and he nodded, he told me I was right. But the lady wasn't happy that she was in the wrong so she stormed off back into the kitchen, grunting and rambling in Chinese left me standing in confusion then 1 minute later she walked back out and started shouting at me really loud while pointing finger at me then walked back in the kitchen to make my order. That's where I drew the line. I snapped and told the guy to cancel my order and he immediately handed me my money. I left and I will probably not come back ever again. I used to be ok with their awful service but last night was the last straw. I think for a person to just go off on someone like that when clearly she's in the wrong, it just makes her a complete asshole. It was so disrespectful. I can see all the good reviews coming from a one-timer customers. If one day you'll become a long time customer, it will not surprise me to read another bad review as this one I just wrote. read more
