Not so great..I felt rushed the food wasn't all that great..did not taste like chinese food and also spend good money

We ordered delivery. On the plus side, the food arrived unbelievably fast. We barely had time to set the table before it got here. Also, the sweet and sour sauce was packaged separately so that the breading on the shrimp didn't get soggy, which was a good idea. On the minus side, the sweet and sour sauce was very cold, like it had just been taken out of the fridge, so we had to microwave it before adding it to the food. But worse than that, the tofu dish we ordered was terrible. The tofu was rubbery and inedible. Also, we only got half the rice we ordered. All in all, not a good experience. For food yesterday - was going to write a review earlier but was too tired to. Glad I didn't so I can also mention the surprise FOOD POISONING that accompanied the terrible food. Orange chicken - simply disgusting. No flavor, over-cooked mystery meat. Chicken chow mein - literally no flavor at all. Noodles were decent but dish overall was most bland Chinese food item I have ever had. Egg rolls - decent texture and flavor. Would recommend (assuming this isn't what gave me food poisoning). Unless you are coming solely for the egg rolls, I would avoid this place. Eating out of a dumpster arguably would be a logical choice over this page. read more

The Mongolian beef was delicious and I enjoyed it... until the next day. Food poisoning made me late for work. Who knows why but we decided to give it another go and get something else the following week. The fried rice was oily but overall okay. I've heard really good things about this place and I think I'll go back in a pinch but always with caution. read more

We ordered takeout through the Yelp app and had a disappointing experience. Our food was 30 minutes later than what the app had displayed. Customer service was responsive, got in touch with the restaurant and determined they were waiting on a driver to return before making our delivery. Frustrating there was no update from the app or the restaurant on when we should expect our delivery, but was glad customer service was responsive. Overall, the quality of the food was decent. We ordered general tso's chicken, crispy beef, pork fried rice, and chicken chow mein. Ordering through the app, we got the pork fried rice for free! read more

Their tofu with house special sauce(almost like a friggin yummy syrup) garlic eggplant (they give you lots of eggplant which I love & easily 2 servings) lemon chicken and sweet sour chicken are definitely satisfying too. Fried rice is also a winner. read more

I don't care what people from Seattle choose to rate a Chinese restaurant. I have lived in SF, DC, New Haven, have eaten a hundred times at Chinese places in New York City, I have studied Asian and Chinese food. THIS PLACE SUCKS. Literally the worst Chinese I have had in the city. I tested them with two tofu dishes, there were as watery as hell, The dish with deep fried tofu was very watery and the tofu was not recently fried, it was dry inside and clearly they did not fry it in-house. Their Ma Po Tofu was wrong in EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. Again, water. The tofu cubes were HUGE. Absolutely HUGE, and unmanageable. Ma Po Tofu needs small cubes, maybe 3/8" of an inch on each side. the tofu should be soft but not silky. The sauce should be fairly thick. they sucked on all counts. I ordered a few other items but deeply regretted even TRYING their food. read more

So. it's been a minute since I have written a review on here. The pandemic is the obvious reason for my lack of activity on here but today I break my silence! New China Express sits just a 5 minute walk from my apartment currently. I've been coming here for two years now since I first moved to the magnolia neighborhood. I am a little shocked I have never written a review until now. With so many small businesses struggling right now, I am more than happy to say this place is as good as it gets for Chinese takeout! You can, theoretically dine here if that was allowed but the inside is so small, I don't think many did even before the pandemic. This place definitely caters more to the delivery and take out side so, add this to your delivery app, trust me! I've tried a lot here from the house made hand shaven noodles which are DELICIOUS. To their orange chicken and general tso's both at the spice level of 4! I really can't choose my favorite out of those. I also enjoy the egg flower soup here as well and their egg rolls. Next on my list to try is their Barley Green Pot Stickers. My mouth is watering thinking about them. Oh where was I? Yes during this pandemic, it's clear to see the staff here working so hard to make sure they are fulfilling everyone's delicious needs. Every time I am here the staff seems very grateful for everyone's service here. It's good to see this during these hard times. I love love their salt and pepper tofu, hand shaven noodles with shrimp, and vegetable moo shu. These are always my go-tos when I order. The veggies are super fresh and the noodles are thick and chewy with just the right amount of sauce. The only downside is that their online ordering website, beyond menu, is always down. You can neither place an order ahead for delivery nor pick up, so you have to call when they open at 4pm. read more

Just moved to the area and wanted Chinese delivery. Got honey walnut prawns, chow mein, and soup. I usually get hot and sour but got the cream corn and chicken. I also got free egg rolls because my order was over $20. The prawns were delicious. Cooked perfectly and still crunchy on the outside. Not too much mayo which is nice considering how much some places can add. The chow mein had a great taste, wasn't greasy and had more noodles than veggies/meat but that's what I prefer. They gave me the egg drop soup rather than the one I ordered. It was ok but needed some seasoning. Egg rolls were just a nice add on but wouldn't order them. Delivery came in half the time they said and everything was piping hot. Good price and I'd order from them again. read more

Almost the perfect midwest/east coast hot & sour soup. Just missing the pork & fried wonton bits, which I just buy sweet & sour pork and toss it in my soup. Chow mein: Perfection. I order through eat24, and never have any issues whatsoever. First time order, exactly what I was craving. The Americanized Chinese food classics I was craving (sweet & sour pork, chow mein that came FREE :) with my $35 order), and some surprises I wasn't expecting like the barley hand shaved noodles & singapore rice. The sweet & sour pork was nice & crisp, have found no icky gristly or overly fatty pieces yet so this is a cut above what I'm often served. The sweet & sour sauce came separate, which helps to keep everything from getting soggy ahead of time. Only suggestion I would have is to heat that sauce too, it was pretty cold like it was pulled from a fridge. It all tasted good though & the pork was still hot after delivery. We loved the barley shaved noodles, but wow are they kelly green. Like St. Patricks day green - wondering how much food dye goes into it. I'm no stranger to food dye but try not to really load up on it. The singapore rice was real spicy even when ordered mild - could use some more meat etc to balance out all the onions & cabbage. Everything was good, very reasonably priced and delivery was quick & free. I wasn't sure if the driver was their employee or through the delivery service (suspect he works for Beyond Menu) and I didn't know if I had cash on hand - so on my tip I made a note to please tip the driver because I was tipping extra to cover him. I asked him if the restaurant tipped him for me and he said yes! So I couldn't be happier. Will definitely order again from them. But please - toss in some fortune cookies with your take out. We ordered delivery from here because its the closest Chinese to us. Crab Rangoon-terrible Egg rolls-below average, would have been ok if not for the soggy cabbage taste Chow mien- same soggy cabbage taste, they use a flatter noodle that I've never seen before. It was edible but not tasty General Tso chicken had the right flavored but was dry on the inside, the outside seemed to ooze oil when you bit down. I've never been in the restaurant, but from the food I would guess this is some kind of very cheap buffet where the food sits out all day, and they put what's left at the end of the day into take out containers and deliver it to eat 24 customers. read more

I honestly don't expect much out of take-out / delivery Chinese food, but this place is delicious. We ordered the Chicken Chow Mein, Orange Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken (there might be a theme), and Egg Flower soup. The chow mein had thick noodles that were REALLY good, the orange chicken was decent (we ordered a '3' spicy, and it was hardly spicy at all, just FYI), and we both really liked the sweet and sour chicken. And they gave us enough soup to last me what will probably be a week, if it doesn't go bad before then. I was also surprised by how quickly the food arrived. It took them maybe 20 minutes to throw it together and get it to my apartment, and I'm fairly sure we're a nearly 10 minute drive away. What I'm trying to say is... I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a Chinese food fix. read more

Really yummy vegetable lo mein. I walked in and got an order to go. It probably took less than ten minutes to be back out on the sidewalk again. The noodles were absolutely awesome! The have this big poster about how/why they use barley noodles. Normally vegetables in lo mien are way over cooked and not that great quality, but I had some awesome crunchy sautéed vegetables - mostly broccoli, cabbage, carrots, and zucchini. I would give them five stars, but it just seems so ridiculous that I paid $18.87 for some lo mien and egg rolls. For one person. In a divey shop that I carried out my own food. Okay, okay. Fine. We went back. More than once. The food is delicious. No other Chinese spot compares near us compares. If you want your rice you should ask. If you order a side of sweet and sour over the phone make sure to request it again when you pick up the order. The food is on point. I ordered 4 things and got egg rolls for free. Nothing I ordered was amazing. I cannot think of one thing I would order again. Mongolian beef: spongy meet with barely cooked onion. The best *East Coast* Chinese we've been able to find in this area. I usually like to try new things, but their orange chicken is just soooo good that I order it every time! 3 starts is not that spicy, get 4 if you want a kick (still not too hot). My bf loves their mongolian beef. TIP FOR ORDERING ONLINE: Their credit card system is wacky, and I too have been denied previously, tried calling, was told to call the bank. Simply writing to not purchase the chicken chow mein as it's noodles are on the harder side, no real taste to it . The chicken is extra chewy. Highly recommend AVOIDING the chicken chow mein as I will never order that again. Side note, had the general tso chicken and it was fairly good even with delivery. This little restaurant is easily missed, but once you find it you realize it far outshines the other Chinese food options in Magnolia. I ordered General Tso's chicken and waited as it was prepared to order. I could tell from seeing their prepped ingredients over the counter they were fresh and good quality. The final dish was delicious. Heads up, dishes are served family style, so I would recommend splitting a meat dish and a veggie dish with friend(s) for a more balanced meal. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but surprisingly good food. The hand-shaven barley green noodles are a highlight. I've only ever seen these in the ID before. And the kung pao tofu was delicious, if a bit heavy on the sauce and light on the peanuts. Beware -- it's very small. Only two tables inside that can seat about four each. There's an outside seating area but it's not much use in January. Seems really more like a place for delivery and take-out that figured it might as well give folks the option of eating there if they really wanted. But, since when my wife and I ate there we were the only diners, this wasn't a problem. However, do beware if you have a Restaurant.com gift certificate to Hung De Chinese Cuisine. This is what this place was called until summer 2012, when it changed ownership. Even though this is the case, Restaurant.com is still selling gift certificates to the place as of this day. My mother-in-law gave me a gift certificate to this place for Christmas. When my wife and I tried to use it, we were told we couldn't. I asked why not, since it was dated December, which is a few months after they changed ownership and names. I figured that Restaurant.com had just neglected to update its database. Nope -- it seems like they're still selling gift certificates that the new owners won't redeem. I don't know who's at fault here, but again -- do not try to use Restaurant.com gift certificates here and by no means buy such certificates. You will be wasting your money. I choose Kung Pao (my favorite) chicken and the "House special hand shaven noodle", not knowing what it was. I was confused about whether Kung Pao comes with rice, opt to order 8 oz brown rice just in case it doesn't. See that I am a few dollars away from free spring roll. Throw in extra veggies into the kung pao. Sit at home, distracting my stomach (forgetting dinner until 10pm? amateur move, greatcait). Remember the wine. Open a bottle. Imaginary toast to other singletons. Hallelujah! Delivered @ 25 minutes. Open up the noodles: It's basically a fat, almost oval noodle with spinach, carrots, occasional beef pieces (a little salty) and shrimp. I'm not sure what it's supposed to be like, but it was interesting. Could use it a bit spicier for my taste. Evaluate the brown rice: The size is kind of laughable. Actually, it works for me because I usually don't eat much rice, but definitely not a normal "1 person" serving and overpriced ($1.50 for 8 oz!). It was rich and more of a wild brown rice, which I liked. Kung pao: Pretty good. Could have gone for 5/5 for spice. Thank goodness for having chile paste at home. Spring rolls: As expected. I've been looking for east coast style Chinese food since we moved here from Florida a few years ago, and finally found our spot. Everything was spot on - chicken chow mein, pork fried rice, wonton soup, garlic veggies, kung pao chicken. I can't rave enough - everything was fresh, clean tasting. Lots of fresh veggies. Broth was flavorful, wontons were handmade. We ordered through Eat24 and everything arrived promptly and well-packaged. Definitely will be re-ordering soon! read more

I ordered food to be delivered on a Friday night and it was a thoroughly frustrating experience, largely due to the online ordering system. When I ordered through the system from New China Express' website, I tried to pay by credit card (with tip included), but my card wouldn't go through so I had to pay by cash. I didn't get a delivery estimate from the website, so when the food hadn't arrived an hour later, i had to call the restaurant. The person who answered said that the food was on it way and it did arrive 5 minutes or so later, but it was still over an hour since I had ordered. And when the delivery person arrived, he didn't have proper change, and didn't seem to understand that the tip was already included in his order; very awkward. I ordered delivery - chicken fried rice and beef hand shaven noodles - late on a Friday night. For reference, I live about 2 miles away from the restaurant. 13 minutes after my order, my food was delivered. It was hot, portions were huge, and it hit the spot. Lots of meat. The chicken fried rice was made with brown rice which was deliiiiiicious. The beef hand shaven noodles were authentic and perfectly done. Will definitely order again. I finally have a go to Chinese takeout place!! EDIT: ordered again, and the chicken chow mein and the pork friend rice are even better than what I ordered last time. I have only been here once and it definitely does the job for cheaper-ish Chinese food in Magnolia. I had the veggie hand cut noodles (which were 5 Star), mostly because I haven't had them in such a long time and they were particularly good, and the Sesame Chicken (which was 3 Star), not horrible but pretty normal. I definitely will be back to try the hand cut barley noodles and probably order extra veggies. The noodles were delish! read more
