I came for happy hour and left... not as happy. The service We sat outside, there were so many mosquitoes and unfortunately they didn't have spray. I left mine in the car ...lol le sigh. We ordered the Fried Brussels and Fries as were not that hungry. We also ordered the rail drinks with soda (rum and coke, rum and ginger) always ask for no ice. Unfortunately I was given a large glass with alot of ice and soda. When I asked for a glass to pour the ice out to the waitress I told no ice to she said "that's right you didn't want ice" brought out the cup and let's just say most of my drink was on the floor. The Brussels are flavorless and I wouldn't recommend. I wanted to bring them home to jazz them up, but truthfully ...should you even have to do that? Fries were the same. Drinks were just okay. My cousin was in town for a conference so she made a reservation for us to meet up for happy hour. She made a reservation for 3. Eventhough it was accepted and she got confirmation the waiter said he didn't know of any reservation. The space is small so all that was left were 2 areas for 2 people. He talked to his manager then sat us at a small table by the self serve wine dispensers and brought over an extra chair. Worst seat ever! We must have been by everyone's favorite wine because people kept stopping right there with their asses behind my head (since I was sitting in the extra chair) to get this particular one. A different girl came and took our order. The service was slow but we eventually got our drinks and food. The pizza and lamb empanadas were mouth watering. If this was a food only review I would be giving 5 stars...but it's not. Our waitress never came back so we assumed she must have gotten off but no one came by. The guy who sat us would zip by ignoring our looks and excuse me's so we were only able to get 1 drink each. After almost an hour another girl came by and asked to clear our table and asked if we needed anything before handing us the check. I guess they needed the table. She still hadn't come back after 10 minutes but then we see our original waitress by our table! She never left. I asked her if I could give her our bill and she looks at me confused and says, "Did you need it ran or something?". She takes it then goes behind the bar and starts serving drinks. This was one disappointment after another. After reading great reviews me and a friend decided to try Nero. We were staying the weekend from out of town. We had reservations for Saturday 6/19 at 10 p.m. We arrived, were promptly seated outside behind a tree. And forgot about for 20 minutes. We finally got water and our order taken by an apologetic server. There must have been a mix up with the host because he brought us the QR code menu after we already ordered. We spent the 20 minutes attempting to flag a server down. Their "I'll be right back" was the 20 minutes. While taking our order one of the first things out of our server's mouth was that she feels bad but due to the floor manager being sick or out she has no authority to comp or discount anything on our bill. She offered, not kidding, free refills on our Cokes. So, we were willing to give everyone a pass. It's busy. Let's eat. Things went from bad to worse. My friend got the Chicken Caesar Salad. He was surprised by almost choking on 4-5 long sharp bones. This was pointed out to the server. We both got the Shrimp Risotto. I found large bones in mine. The next day we both had stomach upset and diarrhea. It was so salty we awoke in the middle of the night gasping for water. I'm only writing this because I'm sure the owner and chef would want to know. If the food wouldn't have bones in it and make us sick, I could overlook the Saturday night service. And offering free drink refills to offset the experience is just insulting. read more

This review is for a happy hour experience only. Nero is pretty new, but they weren't operating like that! I came for happy hour, grabbed a seat at the bar, and ordered two glasses of wine. This doesn't seem to matter to most people, but I'm pretty particular about the wine glass wine is served in. They serve their wine in the large circular glasses, which I love! Only downside is the glass is so big it doesn't look like there's much wine in it but there is. There was a bartender that was maybe a manager that was coming by to make sure everyone was getting their correct drinks, and quickly. I also ordered a pizza which came out quickly, and part of their happy hour menu. It was quite tasty! The vibe is neat- exposed brick and cool lighting fixtures. The music was loud, but not loud enough that you couldn't talk to the people next to you. I didn't try this, but you can also get a wine card and try smaller portions of their wall of wines. My boyfriend and I were wandering around town here on a Saturday evening and stopped in around 6:00 PM because we saw online that they still had some indoor seating available. It was happy hour too and oh man, the deals were great! We ended up getting four cocktails ($6-7 each) , an appetizer, and a pizza for less than 50 minus tip. The ambience inside was so beautiful, great music, and lovely lighting. They even dimmed the lights as it got later into the night which was super nice and cozy. The service was wonderful, our waitress was sooo attentive even though we weren't really asking for much haha. I highly recommend the Moscow mules and the Tom collins. I was by my lonesome and stopped by to get a glass of wine and nibbles, I was greeted with warmth, kindness, friendliness and a charm that quickly swept me off my feet. Oftentimes, I find that wine-centered establishments can be quite pretentious, where people turn their nose up if you can't correctly pronounce Chateauneuf du Pape, but Nero is not this kind of place. I quickly became a regular, the music is amazing, the wine is ON DECK, the FOOD is PHENOMENAL and the customer service is absolutely top-knotch! My friends and I visited this establishment as it was listed as one of the locations for the Cupid's Bar Crawl 2020. It was earlier in the evening on Saturday and the bar was still pretty empty. We were greeted right away by the bartender who also gave us the specials for the crawl. The bar also has a food menu which we ordered the truffle fries, pizza fries, and a sausage pizza. As we got our drinks and waited for our food, I ventured towards the back of the bar and saw the wine dispensers that had some very good choices on it! Just passed the dispensers was a small seating area which were reserved in advanced. The section is a nice place away from a busy bar day! The food didn't take long and we stood at one of the few table tops across from the bar. While the fries were good, the pizza was delicious! I definitely recommend that if you do come here to order one of their pizzas. They hand toss their own pizzas and they baked it nicely with no black bottoms or too crunchy crust. Although we did enjoy ourselves, my friend had an issue with closing out our ticket. Since we had multiple people take our orders throughout our visit, the ticket wasn't correct. The issue was fixed but because the bar was getting more crowded, it took a little time. Another thing that bothered me was that one of the staff members kept coming over and trying to take what he believed were empty cans or finished plates. He didn't even asked if we were finished, he just assumed because we weren't drinking or eating at that moment. While I can understand that they want to keep the place clean, don't just start grabbing things off the table without asking first. Stopped in to try this place for HH tonight. Around 6pm on a Thursday it was pretty dead, but picked up shortly thereafter. The service was quick, friendly, and she offered me a taste of my wine before I committed to a whole glass (without me asking! Which was a very nice touch) The bar got packed but we were pretty easily able to grab a second drink and some food to share. The samosas were much smaller than I had hoped, probably wouldn't order them again even though the presentation was nice. The foccacia sandwich was tasty but not amazing. I would come back for the pizza to give that a try. It seemed like they had some interesting BYO pizza options. The owner spent some time telling me about the wine dispenser in the wall - very cool! Update... I spoke to the owner on 5/17/2021. We discussed the situation and he admitted that his staff was at fault, and offered an apology which I accepted. I cannot give this establishment any stars based on its service. My friend and went to dine at this establishment. when I was seated i noticed several tables already occupied. About 1 hour the waitress informed us that we would have to vacate our table. I observed that she did not say this to other patrons who were clearly seated before us and over the ,"time limit."Also when I made the online reservation there was no mention of a 60 minute time limit per table in writing. My friend asked to speak to the manager, the waitress returned with an apology but we would have to pay and vacate the table. My friend and I politely asked to speak to the manager, again the same waitrss appeared, apologized a d offered another round of drinks. We politely declined and paid our bill and left. This might be my new favorite place to go out in DuPont Circle. I tried this place during pride weekend and while every other place in Connecticut was packed and had long waits, this place was quick to get into with no cover charge. It was small and intimate and the DJ was fantastic. He played a good mix of reggaeton, hip hop, and other EDM beats. I'm definitely going to return to this place. A young woman came up to us who seemed slightly annoyed and very busy asking "would you like to see a menu? would you like to sit down? would you like to see a menu?" Perhaps she'd seen me take the other folks' menu for that brief moment, who knows. So we said yes and then we were handed off another young woman (Jess? can't recall) who brought our menus. Totally different vibe. Explained menu, her faves, explained that she was fairly new (as was the establishment) but that she'd had enough to know we were gonna like whatever we got. We ordered chicken skewers (amazing), a glass of wine, and a drink w/some kind of kiwi-ish fruit that came to the table on fire. And it was fire. $15 but I was not mad at all. I think we ordered another app but I can't recall. Anyway all was good. And Jess (?) saved the experience with her spirit and frequent visits to check on us. I went here for weeknight drinks with a friend who was in town, and it was a *disaster.* We placed our order (two drinks and two margherita pizzas, which were on the happy hour menu) around 6:30. Our drinks arrived quickly and were fine, but around 7 we began to wonder why our pizza hadn't shown up. THEN the fun began. Our server said that he wasn't sure what was going on, and told us at 7:15 that our pizzas had been given to another group by accident. New ones would be coming ASAP, and he offered us drinks on the house. 7:30, still no pizza. He tells us that it will be right out and they won't be charging for it (one thing I'll say, they were very apologetic and the comping was appreciated; if nothing else, it says they can't afford for this to happen often). I look back and see our server yelling at the kitchen. 7:40, he's not sure what's going on but will be bringing out a charcuterie plate. Both of us have to leave by a little after 8, and refuse drinks because we really shouldn't be having more on an empty stomach... at this point literally everyone else in the restaurant has food, so I can't tell what's going on. Around 7:55, when I ask where our charcuterie plate is (since both of us are now famished) a totally different server brings us an order of fries. Not sure how or why, given that those seem like more work, but ok. The fries are good! Not great, but good! There's mayonnaise! 8:10: one pizza is brought out along with a 'charcuterie plate.' Frankly, both are shocking. The pizza is doughy and oversauced; it's a mediocre cheese pizza, with basically no relationship to any margherita pizza I've ever seen. The 'charcuterie' is sliced bread, six fridge-cold triangles of bad cheese (I noticed muenster and cheddar, wasn't sure what the rest were) and (legit good) mustard, plus a sweet-looking chutney neither of us wanted to try. No meat, no pickles. We're told another pizza is coming, but at this point we both have to go so we walk away from it. This was a REALLY weird night for them; at one point someone told us there was a brand new chef, and a huge party was in the back. But this was horrifying, and I can't recommend anyone else come here. Service can go badly wrong sometimes, I get that, but the food was just Not Worth the Wait. read more

My friend and I checked this new establishment out for happy hour before we attended a show at the DC Improv. I was intrigued by one of the reviews on Yelp that said you charge up a card to take to the wine dispenser, but unfortunately none of those wines were part of the happy hour specials. The place is decorated really beautifully and it's got a relaxing and romantic vibe. I realized halfway through that I had been in this space before when it was a donuts and fried chicken place a few years back! It looks completely transformed!! My friend and I got 2 glasses of wine each (the wine glasses were very large so unfortunately it gave the illusion that we didn't get a lot of wine) and I had tried the rose and mont gravet. The rose didn't look very pink, even though I compared it to my friend's pinot grigio, so I questioned whether it was actually rose for a while but I didn't really care as much. The happy hour wines were $6 each. We also ordered the chef's choice cheese and meat plate for $15. The presentation was impeccable. I've been here another time on a busy Friday night when things were popping and I was excited to see that it wasn't so crowded that we couldn't get a spot to lounge in the couches in the back area. We reserved the back room for my friends birthday party and we were treated very poorly by the management and they were not transparent with us about the rules of the restaurant. Our waitress was amazing and overworked and was not helped by management at all. Will never be coming back here again. Brand new, great idea, and a much needed vibe in this part of DC. Great location and the staff was helpful and so welcoming. They took the time to explain the "wine on tap" and show us the ropes. Super easy to learn how to use but also this place is much needed on Connecticut Ave. The rest of their menu also looks great. We each had one drink which we enjoyed and would've liked another but once our food was delivered our waitress didn't return until happy hour was over. My only complaint would be our waitress that night, but that is in no way a reflection of the establishment. It's small and dimly lit but doesn't feel crowded.
