We were late for our reservation, as we self-acknowledged, due to issues out of our control. instead of being accommodating and understanding, we were told repeatedly about four times that they gave away our table to a walk-in group because we were late. We completely understood and just wanted to know if there was any seating available that didn't require a reservation. We were told after being scolded about being late that we could have a seat at the upstairs table (mind you there was nobody so being told consistently we were late was unnecessary if they could've just gave us the option to sit at the empty section from the jump..). We later went to check out the downstairs when a table finally opened up and the staff downstairs were kinder, but much slower. About 30 min for my drink because our server or bartender, whomever she was, seemed to have forgotten my drink order and I had to sit there awkwardly while my friends enjoyed their drinks. The drinks also weren't as good as the ingredients sounded when reading on the menu. Overall it was a mediocre experience and will not be coming back. I like most of the stuff here so far. Nero is a nice looking place. This description for a restaurant usually means it's expensive. A few items here are costly. You can still get a good deal at happy hour. I stopped with a friend one evening. It was in time for happy hour so we were like yes, good timing. The drink specials include $5 wells. It also has specials on food. These are small plates that are pretty much appetizers so don't expect to get filled up. Even so the offerings are good. They're a nice accompaniment to a cheap cocktail, and it's always good while drinking to munch on something. I had the Things You Can Dip. It's about $10 for bread and dips. The dips include chutney, eggplant, and lentils. Overall it's nice for a quiet evening. There's good specials for the happy hour. Recently, I went to Nero looking for a decent happy hour spot that ended late, since I was waiting for some friends to get done with their current plans and I was already in DC. This place has happy hour until 8pm Monday through Friday. I called that Friday around 6 just to confirm because sometimes, these places don't have their happy hours consistent with their menus. But anyway, I called around 6 as I mentioned and was told that HH ended at 8pm. So I proceeded to get there around 6:40 ish and order a few drinks. I immediately noticed that the menus said that their happy hours ended at 7pm. So of course, I had to ask to be on the safe side. It seemed like the staff wasn't sure what time happy hour ended, but it wasn't a big deal in the end. Just one of those minor hiccups. I ended up getting the spiced lamb samoas. They were 2/$7 which is a great price for these. I also got the truffle fries which were my favorite. They were so good, I got two orders of them! This place was great. I've been here before for dinner, but have never come for HH until now. I think I will have to come back sooner rather than later. Definitely a good spot for HH. read more

This is my new favorite spot in Dupont! I had food and drinks and caught up with some friends yesterday after work. The location is convenient right on Connecticut Avenue NW, just south of Dupont Circle, on the side with all of the bars such as Madhatter, Cafe Citron, The Gryphon, and others. The bar is still new but exquisitely decorated, attractive, and inviting. The front bay window is adorned with a pretty Christmas tree. The warm lights against dark walls, a long bar along the right side with plenty of bar seats, and cocktail tables in the back. My friends and I sat at the one large table toward the front entrance. We were there for happy hour! We ordered a range of drinks---a hot toddy ($5), a French 75 (I forget the price), a moscow mule ($8). We also ordered food (pepperoni pizza, a basket of fries, and vegetarian samosas). The chef took an interesting take on the vegetarian samosas, cutting them in half and dressing them with plenty of garnish including onions and tangy green chutney. The chutney was a bit too tart but the portion size was huge for $5. Fancy Indian restaurants could get away with charging $15 for such a dish. The fries were great for sharing, and the three of us couldn't put a dent in it--such a generous portion. They tasted amazing. My Moscow mule drink was strong, served in a copper mug, and tasted excellent with a fresh, thin slice of lime. The bartender (our server) was extremely friendly and welcoming and attentive. He joked, made good conversation, and asked us how we came to learn of the bar. It is fairly new still. There was also live music. An acoustic guitarist began performing around 7. Since Nero is right across the street from my office, I figured I'd meet up with my friend here during happy hour after work. We ventured into Nero around 5:30pm on a Wednesday and it wasn't very busy or crowded which was nice given that it's a small bar. I love the ambiance and dimmed lights (while the sun was still shining in through the large front windows). I grabbed a menu from the bartender and we sat ourselves down on two comfy chairs that hugged the small coffee table next to the door. Not long after, the waitress walked by with two glasses of water and asked if we were ready to order. I went with the Mont Gravet on the happy hour menu, which was actually really good--a nice dry white that's close to a Sauvignon Blanc, but less spicy. As the evening went on, people started piling in...and by the time it was around 6:30ish, it was pretty packed. I didn't order any food although I really wanted to, but they didn't offer any true gluten-free items on the menu. I wish they had offered gluten-free pizzas because it looked really good. But oh well. My friend and I sat around and chatted for a while. It wasn't loud so we were able to actually hear each other and talk without shouting. But during the entire time, no one checked in with us. Even after I had finished my glass of wine, no one came by to ask if I wanted another glass or if we wanted to order anything else on the menu. I found that to be really odd. It wasn't the waitress was on her way to another table that I waved her down and asked her to bring the check. (At this point, if the service wasn't up to par, it probably wasn't gonna get any better considering how busy it was gonna get later on). She quickly brought over the check and we left. Overall, it's a really cute place and I had high hopes seeing the raving reviews on this place, but sadly I can only give 4 stars for this establishment because of the service. I had a very strange experience here, which I am hoping is a one off. I will return and hopefully update this review, but wondering who else experienced the below. I made a reservation for dinner for two for my husband's birthday. When we arrived, we had to track down staff to ask to be seated and we ended up sitting at the bar instead of a table out of laziness on our part. No one cared about our reservation, I feel silly for making one. We invited some friends to meet us after we ate dinner at the bar, but everything took such a long time, we had barely one drink and no food arrived by the time our friends showed up 45 mins later. The two bartenders seemed incredibly stressed, though there were only a handful of tables and we were the only people at the bar. I think the stress level is due to the many many specialty cocktails on the menu, which I know is a pain in the butt to make a ton of. Case in point, they ran out of moscow mule glasses - so we were told we would either have to wait a long time before we got one or order something else. We ordered something else. COOL STUFF: Ambiance is really interesting and cool. Industrial chic meets euro cafe. There are a lot of wines on tap, which makes wine drinking soooo much fun! The display is really neat too. There is outdoor seating, but I can't speak much to that. The food was very tasty! No complaints there. We got a meat/cheese platter, brussels sprouts, samosas, and fries. Everything was yumm yumm. The food is lighter fare (excluding the pizzas which I would like to try) so it isn't a great dinner spot per se, but it is a good spot to get wine and snacks. IMPROVEMENTS: I never felt welcome, which says a lot in a restaurant. There were only two of us at the bar when we first arrived and I had to ask for menus and service and it took a long time. Everyone in our group had to ask for service repeatedly and a few things never came ... not once in 2 hours did anyone ask if we were okay, needed anything, if anything was good/not. We also never got water, which I think is strange when you order food and a lot of drinks. If I had been asked if I needed anything, I definitely would have asked for water! I was so concerned trying to get my regular drinks that I forgot all about H20! I felt like an imposition on the staff, and they looked visibly lethargic and annoyed, and this resulted in our group leaving and going elsewhere to enjoy the rest of our Tuesday night. If we were an annoying group I would have owned that, but we were a group of 30 something professionals on a Tuesday night asking for basic service and being jovial about it. Not a great first impression. I am sad that it was the place I picked for a birthday spot, but I am hoping it was a one off experience. I'll try again. read more

The service was not only slow... it was confusing. My friend and I wanted to order wine, but quickly realized that we needed a card to use the self-service wine "bar." I don't think these are particularly trendy, but my friend thought this self serve bar was all the hype. We asked how it worked to get a card and our server informed us she couldn't get us one, the manager had to do it. Seemed odd since the self-serve wine bar is basically the highlight of this place. After he finally came over he informed us we both needed cards even though we were going to be on one check. We also had to pre-pay, which was also weird considering we didn't know how much we would drink and might want more or less than the amount on the card. Fine. Whatever. We put $25 on each card....Except he didn't come back... we waited and waited and then finally had to ask the server where he was with our cards and the card to use at the bar. After we finally got our cards and tried some wine we both agreed we could go for another glass, except neither of us wanted to deal with tracking down the manager and waiting to add more money onto the card. I've been to many self-serve wineries and breweries before and typically they give you a card and you present it at check out because it kept track and totaled what you drank all night. I hosted an event here on a Monday night and it was nothing short of the best. First off, Vic and the entire team were so unbelievably accommodating throughout the entire process. When I arrived, everything was set up and ready to-go. We chose the gladiator open bar package which included a selection of beers, wines, and mixed drinks. It did not disappoint. The space was BEAUTIFUL! The back of the restaurant easily turned into a dance floor while the front of the restaurant was perfect for sitting and having a conversation. The staff was so welcoming and let us have full control of the music. Anything we needed they provided! The pizza was great!!! I think they were short staffed because It took a while to be waited on. Anyway, I had to try the lamb samosas that everyone was raving about. They were good but nothing to get excited about. I enjoyed the peppers surround the samosas more. The truffle pizza was really good. I can't quite describe the taste but It was very unique. I just came back from this restaurant and knew I had to write a good review. The atmosphere, music and food was simply amazing. I tried their Brussels spouts with cauliflower mash and it was amazing. I also tried the pizza and thought the ingredients were fresh and simply delicious. The bartender gave me some good beer recommendations and he was always very attentive to our needs. I also enjoyed the ambiance of the place. There was some live music when we got there and the bartender told us they usually have a dj on the weekends. This bar/restaurant technically isn't open yet, there was a very very soft launch last night 11/13/18, with a larger opening party this Saturday 11/17/18. It will be interesting to see where the owners take the concept. The food is a combination of Italian and Indian, and while both I like on their own, it should be interesting to see how they are melded together once the full menu is created. The venue used to be donuts and fried chicken (Red Apron), and is not set up to be dining, it's a better lounge space. There are several great beers on tap and the happy hour prices are not bad. The cocktail menu is still being worked out, but I'm positive that this place will become a great hang out, cozy in the winter and a nice patio during the warmer months. I like Nero a lot. The patio is cute and tables are well spaced out. The pizza is quality - we got the mushroom and the sausage/pepperoni and they are generous with the toppings. The crust was a little too crunchy / crisp for my taste, but tasty nonetheless. Cocktails are great as well - really creative combinations. Service was super friendly, but not that fast - it took awhile for us to get our drinks, food, and the check, so this is place where you'll want to linger a bit. Our waitress was kind and great with water refills, and always checked in on us, apologizing for any wait. She also recommended a great cocktail (the cherry blossom gin cocktail was delicious!). If this was a food only review I would be giving 5 stars...but it's not. Our waitress never came back so we assumed she must have gotten off but no one came by. The guy who sat us would zip by ignoring our looks and excuse me's so we were only able to get 1 drink each. After almost an hour another girl came by and asked to clear our table and asked if we needed anything before handing us the check. I guess they needed the table. She still hadn't come back after 10 minutes but then we see our original waitress by our table! She never left. I asked her if I could give her our bill and she looks at me confused and says, "Did you need it ran or something?". She takes it then goes behind the bar and starts serving drinks. Eventually the girl who gave us the bill returns with it. It wasn't that crowded in there to account for this lack of service. I won't be returning. read more
