This place was a treat if you are into the speakeasy scene. Being in my line of work, I seek them out , IF I know I'm with someone that also likes the mystere of what once was and the idea of a 'secret' to getting 'in'. I knew I was gonna be with that kind of crowd about a week before landing in Seattle. I knew they may like a visit to a speak easy. Enter Yelp; Enter Thrillist. You call the number listed on the business listing a week out. Do it to the day, particularly if you plan to be there on a weekend. You can call between 1500-1700 PST. You can not leave a voice mail. Seven reservations are taken at the time I was making a res, per night. Try and try again is the key here. You will be given instructions from that point. Tavern Law is the place of the arrival. Even Tavern Law on a Friday night had a wait at the door; but we had 'the res' at Needle and Thread and were allowed entrance, advised to wait for about 10 minutes and then call via the rotary phone. At that point , you are allowed entrance via the large locked, vault like door and led up the twisting old stair case. We first entered and were lead to a corner table. The decor was sexy and very eye catching. This is quaint, small and historic. This is a perfect date night place, NOT for hanging with your bros and being loud. Velvet high back chairs and crystal chandeliers, oohlala ! Glasses of still water and champagne awaited us; to the idea of my not believing that the glasses were for us! There is sexy music playing and two bartenders making drinks to the liking of your drink palate. Mine is always bubbly and not sweet. My group was a mix of Rye drinkers or Bourbon-ites. Every drink was perfect and our tender explained each and every ingredient used. I seriously don't remember ! But it tasted amazing , was for sipping and was photo worthy. There are small plates , too. Again, this is a place not to have a beer or a bottle .. there is no drink menu, and it will hit your pocket book. Go here with special people. Four drinks was $86. The 25% gratuity is included .. don't be offended, it's like Europe. If you don't like it , read this and move along to a bar that slings cheaper drinks .. this isn't for you. I am a sucker for all things vintage, cute, a little dark, mysterious, and a feeling of somewhat illegal. Needle and Thread covered this for me. Go to Tavern Law's website, make a reservation. Then head to TL and use the old school telephone to 'ring' Needle and Thread. (So cute! So dangerous!). Go up the winding staircase and you're whisked away to the 1920's. The bartenders will ask you what you like and will make a special cocktail. I applaud them for creating something just by someone's description. My drink came out excellent, and I ordered a side of olives as well. Drinks are around $18 and gratuity is automatically added. This is a great place to chill and get away from the noise. read more

I really enjoyed my time at Needle and Thread. Located above Tavern Law, you have to make your way through the very conspicuous safe door and up the stairs after alerting the staff of your presence through the old-school telephone on the wall. I met up with some friends who had already made their way up to the space above. I managed to head upstairs without a hitch. We were seated at the couch near the front of the area, kind of away from the bar, but we did have a waitress, and the bartender did end up walking down to where we were seating to get our orders. My friends had already ordered their drinks, and I was starving after having only eaten some fries earlier in the day. We ended up getting some popcorn chicken, some salted nuts (heh), and I got the burger. Holy moly, that burger was really good, and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The onion jam and aioli that came with the burger really gave it a great, rich flavor. I don't typically enjoy lettuce and tomato on burgers, preferring more acidity (pickles or onions) and a little bit of extra fattiness (cheese or aioli), so this was perfect. Onto the drinks. There isn't a menu, and you merely tell the bartender what your preferences are like. I told him that I wanted a non-clear liquor, with a hint of sweetness and very spirit-forward. I ended up getting a concoction with reposado tequila and amaro, which turned out to be quite good. Our bartender was very good about explaining his reasoning, so that was good to know. Service was very attentive and friendly. Beware, the gratuity is already added on, regardless of what happens. Also, I would highly recommend sitting at the bar, because part of the experience is for the bartender to kind of explain his reasoning behind the ingredients chosen for your cocktail, as well as seeing them put it together. The price of the drinks can add up quite quickly, because you don't know what level of liquor they're using, so beware of that when ordering your drinks. While not without its flaws, Needle and Thread really had some good offerings, both for food and drinks. Will definitely be back in my next visit to Seattle. Also, I really recommend trying out Tavern Law too, even though it might not be quite as glamorous. They serve the same solid drinks and food as well, although in a bit more of a relaxed atmosphere. read more

LOVED this secret reservation-only upstairs bar that you have to call up to from the phone downstairs inside Tavern Law. It reminded me a lot of PDT in NYC. The fabulous room accommodates about 30 people, so if you can score a spot inside, you're golden. Prohibition style classic cocktails is what you'll find here. Each cocktail is crafted to your taste, so all you have to do is tell the bartender what spirits you fancy and he'll take it from there. AMAZING. I won't divulge anymore. Prettiest little spot! What's not to love about this beautiful little oasis. It is small, secluded, charming, glam yet understated. It makes you feel so warm and fuzzy to be up here. I love the big beautiful couch area. Almost like drinking at someone's living room in 1920's. Love ~ decor and cocktails. Bartenders are the best at what they do. You can pretty much tell them what your preferred libation/spirit is and they'll whip you up a mean one. Scotch cocktails? Champagne ones? Bourbon based? Anything! All made with amazing bitters, ingredients and garnishes! Love their snacks too! Cracklings are pretty amazing! Do make reservation! And don't be that loud and rude guest. Classy As F**K This hidden speakeasy bar that sits above Tavern Law transports you back into prohibition era with awesome lighting and seating that looks like it came straight out of the 1920's. I felt like I should have been wearing a flapper dress and smoking one of those uber long cigarettes. Make a reservation and say the magic password at the phone on the wall and the secret door unlocks allowing you up the stairs. Find yourself a cozy seat and one of the dapper bartenders will take care of ya. As there is no drink menu, the bartender/server will simply ask you what you like and you will be whipped up a special...and might I say flipping amazing cocktail. My rye whiskey, grapefruit, rosemary something or other was simply amazing and refreshing. My French 75 was also one of the best I have ever tasted as it included rosemary as well. Just perfect. Service was a touch slow but all in all they are great. We tried out the cheese platter and potatoes which were a nice addition to snack on. Understandably this place is hard to get into. It's small and seemingly you MUST have a reservation, "be in the know for the password", or keep a good eye out. Would love to come back here. read more

I loved my experience at Needle and Thread. Although I generally find the speakeasy theme to be a little gimmicky but I think this was a pretty well carried out experience and I'll definitely be returning. Just heads up that you need an appointment and you'll have to put a credit card down in advance. It was no problem for me to get reservations for 4 people for a Saturday night only a few days in advance. Since they're based on appointment slots there's no guarantee that you'll be able to get in early so I'd recommend coming right at your time. I also don't think you can order at Tavern Law and bring your drink up so just be aware of that. When you arrive you'll go to the phone and give your name. The door will unlock and you'll head upstairs to the little room. It's a pretty intimate, cozy and dark space so if you're claustrophobic I don't think I'd recommend this to you. The place where Needle and Thread shines is on the drink- and I've got a couple recommendations on how to get a successful drink. Your bartender will make drinks custom to your preference. I'd recommend thinking about a type of alcohol you like and then your favorite flavor that pairs with it. I'm a gin kind of girl and raspberry is a common flavor I see in gin cocktails so I mentioned those two flavors and our bartender really nailed mine (we all agreed mine was the best). Out of the 4 of us in our party we really only had 1 "failed" drink. It was a spicy tequila that was just a little too spicy. Remember your bartender is doing the best they can to create something unique and amazing- but ultimately they know it might not be your preference so you CAN ask them to adjust it. Our bartender graciously added more sweet soda to my friend's drink and made it much more drink-able. The only downside I see to this is that in a 1 hour time-frame it's really only possible to get 1 drink. If you're the kind who likes to sit and chat, this is a great place to catch up- but I wish I could have gotten 2 drinks in that time frame. This is my go-to place. Upstairs from Tavern Law (my go-to place too). You have call up from the phone that's by the door, name the # in your party or the secret password (depending on the night). I prefer drinking on off-nights = Sunday-Thursday. When it's crowded up there, it's crowded, and VERY hot up there. You get much better service when it's not crowded and hot. I like my space. I order drinks based on the desired emotion I would like: lately it's been, "happy and ravishing, extra ravishing please". Amazing concoctions appear! Food is awesome. I love the decor in there - it's like from the days of speakeasies, bustiers and garter belts. Nude women in vintage photographs line the wall as you walk up the stairs. This is by far the most disappointing speakeasy I have been to. I was extremely excited about the concept of getting a personalized drink "based on my mood". Unfortunately they did not deliver. I asked for a whiskey-based drink that looked super fancy, something 'instagram-worthy'. I've attached a pic of my drink with this review. That POS drink cost me ~20 dollars, had hardly two sips of alcohol and barely any effort gone into presentation. My friend too who asked for a drink with notes of chocolate, was met with disappointment. I would avoid this place if you are planning to go out in a group, it offers seating for a maximum group size of 4-5 people and does not allow loud conversations. Laughing in whispers is no fun. The two stars I've given is for the ambience and the Cheese $ K corn cracklins. The cracklins were amazing and one of the most unique dishes I've tasted. It's fun not having a menu and getting to spew poetic, vague terms and descriptions at the bartender and see what he comes up with. The drinks are a hit or miss, which is disappointing for the cost, but it's understandable given that they spontaneously have to create something off your description of what you want. One person's opinion of "sweet and fruity" might translate differently to someone else. I stopped being so detailed with my likes and dislikes after realizing I was never quite getting something amazing. So don't expect a spot on interpretation of your taste or preferred flavor profile. I've been five times now and my drinks have all been 3-4 stars out of 5. They're not worth $18, but you're really just paying for the cool atmosphere, unique entrance, and novelty/fun of no cocktail menu. This pretty much means it's going to be a big deal to get inside and packed with annoying jetsetter out of towners. Unless you're meeting a mob boss, underworld contact that you don't want to be seen with, or hiding your mistress or prostitute from your wife who is prowling the hill for you, this may be too much trouble for you. I appreciate the uber mixologist thing for what it is. There are lots of bars who have their champ tenders who dream of exotic bitters and aspire to fixing the lame bars of the world. Keep dreaming, but at least the $10+ cocktails are worth it here. Call ahead and get some password or whatever and Fonzie heeeyyyyyy sharkjump it if you like, but I suspect you may find that they're too much trouble now. Leave this to the velvet rope crowd or as a blind date obstacle course to weed out the unworthies. read more

Amazing speakeasy. To get in, you have to make a call at a phone in the back of another bar. Once the guy let's you in through the door to the left of it, you walk into a hidden gem of a place. There's no set menu, you tell the bartenders, your preferences in terms of flavors, and they will mix you a unique drink out of the large collection of liquors, tinctures, and mixers they have. Being a regular of Washington, DC's best speakeasy, Harold Black, we had to try Needle and Thread. It's located in Tavern Law. I recommend calling ahead to get a table but since it was a Tuesday night, we just rang the black phone in Tavern Law to go up. We sat at the bar and there's no drink menu. The bartender asks you three questions and makes you the best cocktail you'll have in Seattle. Order the olive plate. It will go nicely with any drink. Two recommendations for Needle and Thread: 1) Dim the lights. It's too bright and takes away from the cool factor of a secret speakeasy. 2) Get rid of the naked women photos everywhere. This was a great speakeasy bar in the middle of Capitol Hill. It's a very cozy place above Tavern Law and a reservation is recommended. My group of 4 came on a Wednesday evening and it was almost full. There is no menu so I would highly recommend thinking about what type of drinks you like and provide that information to your waiter. Our waiter did a great job of accommodating to our suggested flavor profiles. I also will add too because there is no menu and the drinks are basically customized to what you want, the cocktails will be above the average cocktail price so be mindful of that. Hands down my best experience in Seattle. For those who have been to Raines Law Room in Manhattan, this place is exactly the same, if not slightly better. This place has the unique factor down to the T. Allow me to explain. You first walk into a very chill bar where you'll notice a small phone booth off in a side corner. You walk in the booth and pick up the phone which automatically dials the bartender upstairs. If there's room, he'll tell you to come upstairs. If not, you have to come back another time. We were "invited" upstairs where we walked into a scene out of boardwalk empire. Everything is purposely set up to mimic the prohibition era. Therefore you're not allowed to speak loud because back then it would alert the cops who were looking for these establishments. They don't serve vodka because it wasn't a major spirit back then. They don't make traditional drinks, you just tell them what spirit you want and your type of taste, and they'll make it in the spot. The music is pure 1920's Louis Armstrong type jazz and it's fairly dimly lit. The scene is awesome. The drinks we're nothing short of outstanding. I had three rum drinks mixed with champagne and other concoctions. All I know is they were probably the best drinks I ever had. This place is amazing. That's all that needs to be said. A 100% must if in Seattle. I will absolutely be back. read more

I was really excited to try this place out. Ended up describing my taste as something on the fruitier, sweet and herbal side. When asked about fruits that I prefer, I mentioned that I didn't enjoy citrusy fruits but do enjoy mango, peach and berries. What I ended up getting was all citrus. Very orangey, with lime and hint of apricot. I was not a fan at all. On top of that, they make you pay a 20% gratuity by default. I think the drinks are unique. Was very disappointed with our experience at Needle and Thread last week. We have been to Tavern Law many times and were very excited to try Needle and Thread. We had made an hour reservation and the waitress/bartender who originally helped us was nice and attentive. We were about 30 minutes into our reservation when a different woman came by to refill our water glasses and asked if we were doing ok. We weren't quite done with our first drinks at the time. 10 minutes later, a different bartender came around and threw down our bill. We were confused as we still had time left and asked if we could order another drink. He began to scold us (literally) and said that the water woman had told us it was last call (which she had not) and that we had refused. He reluctantly made us a 2nd drink which were not as good and mine contained rum which I had specifically stated I didn't like. With about 5 minutes left in our reservation, he again threw down another updated bill and stated "my next table is waiting", implying that we needed to leave. Overall, a very disappointing time especially when you are paying $20+ for a cocktail. Needless to say, Tavern Law and Needle and Thread have lost our business. read more

In a time where speakeasies seem like a dime a dozen (and very loosely defined) it is fun to experience one that stays true to the history of speakeasies. As you know, the entrance is in Tavern Law and requires a very fun phone call to be let in. You wind up some stairs and enter in a beautiful space. The ambiance is perfect for a speakeasy with dim lighting and comfy seating tucked away into corners of the bar. The big draw of Needle and Thread is that your drink is custom made for you. Your server will have a short conversation with you regarding preferences, flavors, liquors and then go off to making your drink. A very fun and unique experience, for sure. There are small food offerings from Tavern Law which are delicious. We ordered the burger and clams to split among ourselves. The drinks themselves were well made but nothing earth shattering, especially considering the price ($14). I suppose if you had a very specific flavor or combination you wanted it would be worth it to have it made but I wasn't incredibly impressed. It felt like a $12 drink and $2 for ambiance. Overall though, I think this is a fun place to start or end a night with a date or friends. I still recommend this place for the experience. read more

We came as part of my weekend birthday festivities and there is a lot to love about this place! It is inside Tavern Law, so tell the nice bouncer out front where you're going and he'll direct you. There is a phone you pick up and hostess will let you into the secret upstairs speakeasy. The lighting is soft and setting is comfortable elegance. I love that the seats and couches are clustered into little corners and sections for subtle privacy and decor. It made me think of the necessity privacy would have been during Prohibition times so people wouldn't see you breaking the law. There is no cocktail menu- so the cops couldn't tell you were selling liquor. Because of this, they tailor make your cocktails for you based on your drink preferences! (sweet, savory, brown/white liquor, favorite cocktail, bubbles, fruit, herbs, etc). BTW, no vodka. The speakeasy is set in 1920 and vodka does not make its first appearance in the US til 1950 (so said our barman). My first drink tasted a little too sweet and I think there were too many flavors for them to stand out, but my second one was reminiscent of a French 75- bubbles, citrusy, not too sweet- and it was perfect! Cocktails are $15/ea. There is food menu and I think the food comes from Tavern Hall downstairs. We had the ham 'n' cheese cracklings - which were AMAZING!! It totallly reminded of us of the shrimp chips you get with peking duck at Chinese restaurants dusted with a little cheese. SO GOOD! The spiced nuts were also tasty and a great accompaniment to the drinks. It's a little bit pricey to go regularly, I think, but it's super fun for a girls' night or a celebratory outing. Every time my friend from San Francisco visits, he always insists on making a visit (or two) to Needle and Thread. So far, my friends and I have been extremely impressed with the service, food and drinks this place has to offer. For those of you who are not familiar with this place, they require reservations. It's intimate upstairs, which makes it the perfect place to go on a date or hang out with a few close friends and play catch up. I have yet to encounter a bad drink at Needle and Thread. It's awesome to see the bartenders whip up drinks with spirits that my friends and I normally would not order. The last time we were here, they whipped up a cocktail for one of my friends that involved egg whites and whiskey (i think?), which was very tasty. They do have the same food menu as Tavern Law (which, oddly enough, I haven't had the opportunity to hang out at) but I highly recommend their fried chicken. You'll definitely want to eat every morsel of this dish. read more

Best part is when you get lucky without a reservation and they're able to accommodate you on a Friday night :) I love how the bartender personalizes drinks based off of your mood, spirit of choice and preferences. Creative touches like torching rosemary and throwing in edible flowers, tinctures & fun serving glasses take this place to the next level. You access this speakeasy by picking up an old fashioned phone downstairs in Tavern Law and if you've got a reservation or they happen to have open seats you get buzzed up stairs, past period photos, art, and drapery. Vodka, rum, tequila, gin, whisky? -What about liquors like triple sec or elder flower? -Do you like citrus? This hidden speakeasy themed bar was the most unique, interesting bar! The experience of calling up to the secret bar to be buzzed in, going through the unmarked, safe-looking door and up the narrow dark staircase with vintage naked woman photos lining the walls was so thrilling. Getting a mysterious drink which caters to your taste by describing your pallet and conversing in the beautiful vintage room was the best birthday ever. wow, this was fun. we couldn't get in the first time I called up, but we were patient. the second time, the bat phone worked, and we jumped on the magic carpet and rode upstairs. we described what our tastes were and potions were concocted. its a lot of fun. its like having a personal chef! Excellent place. My friend and I had been bar hopping and this place was the last place we came. I didn't know it, but we definitely saved the best for last. We were lucky enough to get into Needle and Thread. A truly fun experience that takes you back to the 1930's. It's a speakeasy so you gotta call up on the vintage phone to see if there's space for ya upstairs (or you can make a reservation online). There is no drink menu. The bartender comes to your table and ask you what you like and dislike in a drink, goes back to the bar, and comes back with magic in the form of a customized drink just for you. The food is also really great. The salmon crostini is simple but amazing. They are small so I spent 16.00 on 4. The charcuterie board is also a treat featuring that famous mole salami from Salumi. Went on a recent date night to Tavern Law, but were able to go upstairs and sit at the bar in the Needle and Thread. It was like being smuggled into a Victoria pill-box: linen lined walls, cool little chandeliers, dim light and jazz - a classy, chill, surreal environment compared to the construction and industrial vibe of the streetfront. Were were treated to delicious custom-made cocktails. We simply told the bartender our general preferences of base liquors and complimentary flavors and she made us some amazing cocktails who's flavors were familiar but really popped in unique ways. The food was mind-blowing. The Wife had the crispy fried chicken with honey glaze which was perfect: light, crispy breading, succulently tender meat underneath. I had pan-friend trout on a bed of chickpeas and fennel. The skin on the trout was as thin as paper and wonderfully crisp compared to the tender, flaky flesh underneath. Everything was fairly simply prepared but perfectly executed - just showing what quality ingredients and skill in the kitchen can produce. This is our new favorite place! read more

This is the best bar I've ever been in. I don't actually drink, which may be the reason I often don't enjoy bars. They're loud, too dim, and too busy. This speakeasy, on the other hand, with perfectly lit, played beautiful jazz music at a quiet level, and only had a few patrons, which gave it an air of exclusivity. The limited number of patrons also allowed the bartenders to spend more time on making good drinks, and wonderful small talk. Speaking of the bartenders, they were wonderful. I won't name names; let's just say their names started with a "W" and an "A". They not only were truly except bartenders, but could speak at length about the history and habits of the prohibition. They made such excellent drinks that my sister (after her first drink) decided that "A" should call himself an 'alcoholigist', a mix of alchemist, alcohol, and mixologist. Both "A" and "W" we're truly worthy of the title. As I said, I don't drink alcohol. My drink of Choice is a good old fashioned Shirley Temple. It's been my drink since I was six, and I don't see a reason to change now. However, the Needle and Thread may have spoiled me for Shirley Temples for the rest of my life. My drink did have grenadine, but it was a handmade, house specialty Grenadine. It also contained a homemade simple syrup, mint, and, of course, sprite. It was one of the best drinks I've ever had. I also ended up having their bread pudding for dessert, it was amazing! It may be the best bread pudding I've ever had in my life. I will ABSOLUTELY be returning to the Needle and Thread, and I cannot wait until I get a chance to go back. read more
