They capture the idea of Speakeasy really well. You enter by picking up the phone inexplicably mounted inside Tavern Law (ohhhh that's why it's there). The safe door next to it will unlatch and you can walk up the steps into the intimate space (looks like only 4-5 parties accomodated at a time). There is no cocktail menu. It's basically a cocktail omakase where you essentially just tell the server what you "feel" like and what you don't like and they go from there. Every drink I had was delicious and creative. The server describes what's in it and you drink and enjoy. After you're done you can exit out a hidden door that takes you straight out into the street so Tavern Law patrons will think you've just vanished forever. read more

There is absolutely no place I'd recommend more highly for drinks in Seattle than Needle and Thread!! I've been many times and somehow the drinks get better and better each time! This is our go-to spot to take friends who come in to town and they are always impressed with the attention to detail that the bartenders take when getting your drink preferences. The drinks are beautiful, in fun glasses, and taste even better than they look! A tip before going is to consider what flavor combinations you like or are in the mood for. I love that you have to call ahead, I love that the seating is limited, I love walking through the Tavern Law to get to it, I love the attention from the bar staff....I just love it!! While the meal menu is limited the drinks have no limits as your personal taste preferences set the tone of the evening. Everything is spot on here. From the glasses to the music, the decor and the overall vibe. Make sure to call for a reservation and listen to the voice recording, they have pretty specific hours for when they take and set reservations and if you do not get a call back - try again. Was here two weeks ago for vacation and was lucky enough to get a reservation here at 5 pm on a Saturday. Keep in mind they do time you, you get one hour to enjoy your drinks and snacks. My friend and I arrived exactly at five, we picked up the phone that dialed up to the speakeasy and was let in with no problems. We were sat near the window where we could see everyone downstairs enjoying their dinner as well as some people getting turned down from entering the bar. It is a cozy place perfect for a date or a small get together. Everything is intimate and peaceful. drinks are made to order and I really enjoyed mine. I asked for something light and citrusy, our bar tender had created a grapefruit vodka drink for me and it was strong and delicious. We also ordered the cheddar and corn cracklings. Would not really recommend this as it was really salty to my liking and just tasted like corn chips with spicy cheese. Be prepared to spend your bucks here as it's $16 a drink plus tax and tips, but also be prepared for a very very cool experience. I'd been itching to go here ever since i read about it, and knowing it was bookings only meant i had to get one. We rang up a few weeks in advance and found you can only book within the same week you want to go, and only Tuesday-Saturday calls between 3 and 5pm PST. So you have to be kind of on it. We got a spot for 9:15 on a Friday night and arrived to be told how to get in (using the phone and entering through a bank door). The bar itself is tucked away upstairs at the Tavern Law where there's only space for maybe 15-20 people in total. We got a little table that had a mirrored window for us to spy on everyone down below. Our barman was wonderful - very charming, asked us a lot of questions and explained how it all goes. In case you don't know, they have no cocktail menu. Everything is totally bespoke and to your requirements. Be clear on what you do and don't like as it helps them refine it for you. We each had 2 drinks and were totally blown away by the craftsmanship of our guy - they were each delicious and so on point to what we'd said. We spent a good hour and a half there and would've stayed longer had it not been expensive enough to begin with. It was here that I had my first taste of a true craft cocktail, which contained habanero tincture and pepper garnish. It contained precisely the right amount of fire, which worked with the flavors of the cocktail rather than drowning it out with pure burn. This joint is a really fascinating and trendy (modern) speakeasy that requires you to stand before an old metal safe door and phone upstairs to confirm your arrival. You then must walk up the windy stairs to a tiny space overlooking Tavern Law restaurant. It's really cool to experience the perspective from a quiet upstairs nook. Reservations are by phone only, and it's a little irksome in that you call, and wait a few days for someone to call you back and confirm a date that may be weeks out, but one must remember how tiny (think your grandparents' secret attic space) and intimate the venue is: a few bar seats, a few tables for 2-4, and one large table near the entrance for a larger group. There's often only 1-2 bartenders, because of the space constraints as well, and each time I've visited, they have always put a lot of passion and time into crafting each cocktail. Upon arrival we were asked if we had a reservation and then directed to a phone to use to get into the "secret" door to Needle and Thread. The venue itself is small, dimly lit, and has a homey yet luxurious vibe to it. It kinda feels like you're back in the 1920's! Individually crafted cocktails take time so be prepared to spend some time here! Since we were a larger group I opted for a two hour reservation and it was just enough time for two rounds. The drinks are pretty strong too. The bartender comes over to your table to take your order and they ask you a series of questions to gather clues as to what you might want. I found that very helpful since I can be a bit indecisive. When your drinks come, the bartender goes over everything in your drink and it seems like it's usually 10+ ingredients long! I was amazed she was able to remember everything in all five drinks. As long as your honest about what you like I don't think you'll be disappointed here! For one round I went for a more playful drink and asked for something that tastes like a PB&J and it. was. amazing. And totally spot on!! Be Honest. There is no menu. This is not the time to order a vodka soda. These are cocktails based on you telling your server which flavors you like, which liquors you like. Which flavors should be avoided. Don't say "I just like everything!" Give your bartender something to work with. Even a food. Underwhelming and overpriced. There was a bit of an issue with our reservation, we had a 15 minute difference which normally doesn't matter but we had a prior commitment so it felt a bit rushed. The speak easy idea is absolutely amazing. You make a reservation and pick up an old rotary phone to let them know of your arrival, and go upstairs through a secret door. It's cute, original, and makes it feel exclusive! That's the best part. The place is neatly decorated, there's a coat rack, bathrooms, and seating. They pick the seats for you, due to reservations, which also takes away the idea of almost being able to socialize in a cute bar. The music is low which allows for conversation. When you want to order, they ask a series of questions to get a feel for which drink best suits you. They do a great job at this, however for $18 a drink, it's not entirely worth it. My drink was great but it was underwhelming. It left me feeling like I could've ordered another delicious sangria or margarita downstairs for half the price. I had three drinks, I don't remember the specifics bit a alcohol forward whiskey cocktail, a gin inspired sazarac and a chocolate citrus mezcal drink for dessert. I am incredibly frustrated. My partner and I LOVE a good cocktail and this place knows how to make them. BUT the customer service is atrocious. The first time we came, we were thrown out without warning. This time, we made a reservation specifically for 2 hours of cocktail magic and we were asked to leave after only 1.5 hours for a different pending reservation. (There isn't even currently an option to make a reservation for 1.5 hours online) If you ask me, that's unacceptable in of itself. To make matters even worse, after our first round of cocktails we had to wait 35 minutes for another cocktail. We got the second cocktail and then were told we had 10 minutes until out reservation was prematurely terminated. Needless to say, we are extremely frustrated. If you want a good cocktail but don't care about service, this is your place. If you care about customer service at all, go elsewhere. Will we be back? Probably not. read more

By far one of the best cocktail bars in Seattle, this isn't your run-of-the-mill, pretentious, new-age swank bar. This is a legit old school prohibition-style bar, where drinks are tailor-made to your preferences. It's located inside Tavern Law, and traditionally you pick up a rotary phone and the safe opens up to a whole new experience. They have forgone that due to covid protocols, and the doorman at tavern law will let you in if you have a reservation. The bar is very warm & intimate and has eclectic decor, very fancy. It is pretty small, with space for only four to five groups even during normal times, making it more exclusive with covid protocols in place. It is only suited for small groups and the quiet and dim atmosphere makes it great for dates. They don't have cocktail menus, and the bartenders as for your spirit preference and the flavors you're in the mood for, and make a special drink for you. So think about what flavors you'd like in your drink, and if you can't they'll give you some pointers. We tried eight drinks, and almost all of them were outstanding with very unique flavors. The food menu is the same as that of tavern law, which is limited to mostly appetizers. The desserts were amazing though. The service was great, with friendly bartenders giving us some time to think of our preferences and checking up occasionally. Food was a little slow, but there seemed to be some miscommunication which was resolved immediately. For such a bespoke experience, the prices aren't bad, $19 per cocktail (plus tax and tip of course). Any similar place in belltown or slu would definitely be priced much higher. They generally limit reservations to 90 minutes, so you may not have a leisurely experience. PRO TIP: choose the last slot of the day, and they'll let you sit until close. Overall, a must-visit bar if you like fancy places. Getting in without a reservation is really difficult and almost impossible on weekends, so factor that in your plans. You call the number listed on the business listing a week out. Do it to the day, particularly if you plan to be there on a weekend. You can call between 1500-1700 PST. You can not leave a voice mail. Seven reservations are taken at the time I was making a res, per night. Try and try again is the key here. You will be given instructions from that point. Tavern Law is the place of the arrival. Even Tavern Law on a Friday night had a wait at the door; but we had 'the res' at Needle and Thread and were allowed entrance, advised to wait for about 10 minutes and then call via the rotary phone. At that point , you are allowed entrance via the large locked, vault like door and led up the twisting old stair case. We first entered and were lead to a corner table. The decor was sexy and very eye catching. This is quaint, small and historic. This is a perfect date night place, NOT for hanging with your bros and being loud. Velvet high back chairs and crystal chandeliers, oohlala ! Glasses of still water and champagne awaited us; to the idea of my not believing that the glasses were for us! There is sexy music playing and two bartenders making drinks to the liking of your drink palate. Mine is always bubbly and not sweet. My group was a mix of Rye drinkers or Bourbon-ites. Every drink was perfect and our tender explained each and every ingredient used. I seriously don't remember ! But it tasted amazing , was for sipping and was photo worthy. There are small plates , too. Again, this is a place not to have a beer or a bottle .. there is no drink menu, and it will hit your pocket book. Go here with special people. Four drinks was $86. The 25% gratuity is included .. don't be offended, it's like Europe. If you don't like it , read this and move along to a bar that slings cheaper drinks .. this isn't for you.
