Such a great bagel spot. I was wondering Richmond in the morning and I stumbled upon a cute bagel shop at the corner. Please be safe when crossing the street, pretty busy area! As I entered, I noticed how welcoming the atmosphere was. It was so peaceful and calming and the staff just had such a welcome energy which is honestly hard to come by. As I walked towards the register, this wonderful lady with amazing colored hair, I think her name was Annele? well she was amazing. She was so patient with my order, such great recommendations, and just such a nice vibe. She definitely needs a raise! I ordered 2 lox and cream, ol Virginia (I think that's the name) and 2 cold brews! These were for my friends minus one of the lox and cream. GOLLY, the lox and cream was so divine. Melts in your mouth, great smoky flavor. Everything was just perfect. Definitely will come back! read more

Horrible experience! How do you have a sign in the window that says "Hot Bagels" but refuse to toast your bagel? I asked multiple times if they could just toast it slightly. The cashier said, "No, it's our policy not to toast bagels if you get a shmear." I said, "The toaster is literally right behind you. It would take about eight seconds." NOPE. Apparently, policy is policy. But seriously... how are you supposed to eat a bagel sandwich that's completely dry and UNTOASTED? And if you're going to refuse a basic request like toasting a bagel, the bagel better be incredible. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The bagels were dry, unremarkable, and not even particularly chewy. I honestly get better bagels from Wawa--and at least they'll toast it for you. Needless to say, I won't be coming back. read more

I found another Bagel shop in Carytown so here's my review: Food 9/10 - I ordered 2 different breakfast bagels on the same Everything Bagel and they were the best bagel breakfast sandwiches I have ever had so far. The everything was seasoned and the main thing that caught my tastebuds was the eggs which were the best part of the bagels. I have yet to try the other bagels but I'm sure I'll like them too. Service 7.5/10 - I don't have much to say but the staff were pretty and my food came in a decent time. Inside 7/10 - It's in a neighborhood in VCU so I can excuse it for being small and tight, but the inside is nothing special. It's clean and nice so that's all I'm going to say as well. Overall, this is another one of these instances where the food is worth it and everything else doesn't matter. I can't speak for lunch but this place is perfect for breakfast. I'll give this a 8.7/10 read more

Got an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese. The cream cheese was light and savory and paired perfectly with the saltiness of the everything bagel which were delicious, thick and chewy. If driving, you will need to find street parking. There can be a bit of a line but it moves fast. Seating is extremely limited inside and tends to be a bit cramped, so be aware as it is more of a grab-and-go place! read more

Not sure why this place is always so packed. The bagels are huge and doughy and really don't have much flavor to them. Got a dozen with a mix of sesame (flavorless), rosemary sea salt (smelled great, tasted bland), and everything (mid). Prices were decent. Service is fast and friendly, but not sure the bagels are worth the wait/effort. read more

Hit up Nate's Bagels early one morning after a morning bike ride, and it honestly hit the spot; great post-workout meal. They've got a nice little outdoor seating area where you can chill and enjoy your food. Super casual, good vibes. I didn't sit down this time just grabbed my food to go but next time I definitely plan on sitting and soaking in everything. The inside looked nice too, clean and well put together. Parking can be a bit of a hassle, since it's all street parking. And this place gets busy fast. When I rolled up to pick up my food, there were tons of online order bags stacked up and people already waiting as soon as they opened. So if you're not ordering ahead, be ready for a tiny crowd just something to be mindful of if you're in a rush. That said, this is probably one of my favorite bagel spots right now. I'll definitely be back again soon. read more

Nate's Bagel has everything you need to start the day. It has many breakfast bagel options, coffee, orange juice and more. When you come in, it's not that big, but it serves its purpose. You go straight towards the back to put your order in and wait for your name to be called. The food is picked up on the counter by the door. That's also where all the to-go orders sit. The coffee is self-service and has a few syrups available. On this visit, I had the Banh Mi on a rosemary and salt bagel. It was delish! The pork belly was amazing! Great flavors combined. My husband had what he always had, the Lox with the Works in an everything bagel. It's got the lox, cream cheese, tomatoes, onions and capers. Wow! Both of these do not have eggs, but you can order others that do if that's your jam. There are 2 tables inside and outside and a long counter against the wall to sit. There is also an "All Gender" bathroom in the back. There are napkin dispensers throughout. Watch your step coming in and out. Overall, this place is great. I love coming here and enjoying my breakfast and coffee. There's a mix of customers, but mostly VCU and young people enjoy this little gem. It's walkable too, so you'll see people walking or riding their bike here. I definitely recommend this place. Also, they opened a new place in Scott's Addition. I haven't been there, but heard they sell pizza bagels. read more

What a great corner bagel shop! Visiting from D.C., it was packed on a Sunday morning in January. The counter had dozens of paper bags for online orders. I ordered a sesame bagel with one egg, country ham, herb aioli, pepper jelly, and American cheese. I LOVED it. The bagels are thick and chewy, just the way I like them. If you love bagels, stop by! Nate's Bagels - OMG - Best kept secret & it is NOT a secret!! Bustling & energy all over the place - A constant flow of people picking up bags of amazing bagel sandwiches and did I MENTION the RUGELACH!! SNEAK peek of the vibe! So where did Nate's come from you ask? Nate Mathews, a former engineer turned bagel-maker after experimenting with his own recipes. He started out as a POP UP SHOP - of course - lol. GOING to the source, he perfected his bagel-making traditions by studying the best!! (including New York/New Jersey) and refining a kettle-boiled, stone-baked bagel! All about a bagel with flavor, girth and just amount of crunch top. I LOVED the texture and taste!! Texture is important!!! Then BOOM - 2018 - Well here we are - W. Cary Street & S. Allen Ave in Richmond's Fan District! It's eclectic, energetic & an embodiment of Richmond - a fabulous, layered, complex and ever evolving river city. First time here and their bagels are more on the bready side. If your like filling, thick bagels this is a good place for you. Not a lot of seating so it's more of a grab and go type of place. I got the lox and the works and it was a little light in the lox read more

First time at Nate's Bagels and it was worth the wait. It's a tight space inside with a never ending line of customers but the line moves quickly. Here are the highlights: **inclusive menu with options that lend themselves to all types of dietary needs which we enjoyed! **they give you the option to make your own bagel. ** They have tomato jam!!!! And it is GOOD **They have a make your own cold brew bar with milk options, syrup choices and ice!! **The pick up area is a mad house! There are orders galore which seem a little overwhelming, but the staff has it under control. ** They have seating inside but honestly I think shifting some if that seating outside would help with the flow of traffic. **over all I really loved my bagel. I got the Licx with an everything bag and a side of Tomato jam. read more

Nate's is a nice spot to visit with the ability to customize your order with several options on the wall to choose from. The service was good, nothing out of the ordinary. The ambiance is geared towards a small diner feel but with limited seating options. I think it's more of a grab and go type of place. The food was okay, didn't blow me away but not bad. read more

We visited Richmond to see our daughter at VCU and can't wait to go back to visit Nate's again. We had breakfast here twice in our short 6 day visit and both times the bagels and cream cheese were out of this world. Salt bagels (not too much salt) with veggie cream cheese (savory) and with honey walnut cream cheese (sweet) were incredible!Super walkable from all over the VCU campus and don't let the long lines fool you as they are pretty quick and efficient! Highly recommend! read more

A great bagel restaurant near downtown Richmond! I went there two times during my two day visit to Richmond. Their bagels were huge (about 5-5.5 oz each), freshly baked and chewy. Order online. It becomes very cramped inside with everyone waiting in line or waiting for their food so you will likely not find a place to sit. If you order online, you can avoid the long wait in the small space. The bagels are good, ingredients fresh. A little on the expensive side. The breakfast bahn mi was tasty, I think I'll ask for less mayo next time because it did get a little messy. read more

This is the place! Walking in, the sea of brown paper bags lined up with orders made you quickly recognize that there must be something pretty darn amazing about this place. Just as fast as a bag goes out the door with a smiling customer another one goes up on the counter. Good sign! I went for a sausage, egg and cheese with tomato on a pumpernickel bagel. The sandwich was a real winner and the pumpernickel bagel was probably one of the top five bagels that I have ever had. An everything bagel with plain cream cheese was enjoyed by my oldest daughter while my wife had an egg sandwich that came with cream cheese, sausage and a tomato jam on it that she enjoyed each and every bite of. It gets a little cozy in there with the throngs of customers present but the staff does a remarkable job keeping the flow of customers moving along nicely. If this bagel shop was in my neighborhood, I would be here each and every weekend. So good! read more

Love how many options there are to choose from here! I stumbled across this place violently hungover the other morning. In desperate need of food and coffee. It was quiet and calm inside, the lighting not too bright for my raging headache. The first sip of coffee was prime 2019 Dunkin Latte. I haven't had coffee that good since the first time I tried it. My bagel? Made to order and beyond. I think it cured me. I had an out of body experience on the side walk while I ate it. Nate's Bagels made what could have been a very bad day, great. read more

My husband and I were visiting from Baltimore and staying nearby. We read reviews and didn't know what to think; most people wrote that the bagels are wonderful but a few complained that they were "hard," "doughy," or "tasteless." Gotta say, folks, these bagels are fantastic. The real, NY deal. Absolutely as good a bagel as we've had anywhere--and we were delighted to find them in Richmond. Anyone who doesn't love these bagels doesn't know what bagels are supposed to taste like. It's fine if your idea of a bagel is a doughnut-adjacent fast-food pillowy creation that comes in flavors like cinnamon sugar...but that's not what bagels are meant to taste like. These are. read more

Really good bagel. Super thick and really had to chow down but worth it. One of the top bagels I've had in Richmond. Had it 2 hours after picking it up and still great so that shows a lot. This place seems to be a well oiled machine.. they appeared to have what I can only assume was 50 take out bags on the counter, and our orders still took less than 10 minutes. Got some just bagels with cream cheese and one egg and cheese. The bagels were solid and the cream cheese was delicious. DIY coffee situation which I can appreciate.. and their cold brew was pretty wonderful. I will note that the scooped bagel with cream cheese seemed to throw off the bread to spread ratio. Not the best bagels we've had but still a very strong bagel..would recommend! read more

Finally tried Nate's because Baltik's was closed. Have to be honest that I'm confused why this place is always so packed. The bagel was very mediocre, chewy hard and doughy. I haven't had an untoasted bagel in forever so maybe that was the issue? Scallion Cream cheese was lacking flavor and the tomato that was on my lox bagel was so cold it tasted a little frozen. Definitely a cute atmosphere and friendly workers though. Nice and convenient location. read more

Scrumptious. Divine. Ordered online and, in a moment of sheer optimism, showed up half an hour early. (Pro tip: Don't do this unless you enjoy awkwardly loitering.) Inside, it's a bustling bagel bonanza. The vertical counter is lined with bags, each with a receipt stapled on. If you ordered online, it's a scavenger hunt for your name. There's another stash of bags near the register, reserved for the bagel VIPs. You'll hear first names being called. And the bagels? Damn fine. And each ingredient in the sandwiches is so perfectly prepared and seasoned. Worth ordering ahead and picking up an hour later. Next time, I'll show up at the actual pick-up time. Lesson learned. Disclaimer: First time going, so no idea if this is normal weekend morning activity or I stumbled into a disjointed mega-meeting of the secret society of bagel enthusiasts. read more

We love Nate's Bagels - they have vegan cream cheese (cashmear), almost all of their bagels are vegan and classic New York style, and they also have vegan bagel sandwiches! The Veggie (sub vegan CC) sandwich is super refreshing/yummy and the Mox with the Works is a great, tangy alternative to actual lox! The New Virginny is also vegan and I tried a bite from our friend last time we visited - very good, it's sweeter with a jammy taste and faux-meat. The place is always packed when we stop by - you might have a difficult time finding a table since seating/space is limited, so we usually walk over to Blanchard's to get coffee too :) Overall great spot and I highly recommend! read more

I really wanted to love this bagel shop but at this point I just can't say that I loved it, but I didn't hate it either. It was pretty in the middle for me. I chose a build your own bagel on an everything bagel with sausage, egg, cheese, tomato, plain cc, and red pepper jelly. I think I would have enjoyed the bagel sando more if my bagel wasn't so hard, it was really tough and hard to chew. I'll definitely be giving this place another shot though. Giving three stars because their online ordering messed us up twice. We were trying to avoid the lines and because we had a big group wanted to make sure we got the order in. Love that their bagels are chewy with the right amount of softness. The option to have multiple different toppings is wonderful, but I am a bagel purist and need my everything with the cashew cream cheese. Very clearly labeled to make it easy for you. It still has great food and if we have the time I do try to go since the bagel quality is some of the best that I have found in the area. Now if they only figured out their online ordering they would be great. read more

This place is chaos on a Saturday morning, but I totally get why. They keep it organized despite being full to the brim of people picking up and ordering. I ordered online which was very easy. My order was ready when I arrived, so I was able to grab it. We did 3 bagels and schmear and 1 challah BEC sandwich. I wish I could eat that challah everyday - such a genius addition to the menu.
