Abi's Books and Brews is the perfect combination of coffee,books and records. If I miss anything it's because I was fixated on the books. Upon entering, the books are found along the wall, there are tables and chairs to sit and the coffee is ordered at a counter right in the center of the store. Towards the back, they have a section just for kids and young adults. Also, there are plenty of parking outside. They have new and old books available at decent prices. One of the best things I have ever seen is they have a dedicated turning bookcase for BANNED books of Hanover county. It is a lending library. You choose a book, open it and scan the QR code inside and check off the book you picked. Then, you return it when you're done. No time limit on it. That easy. I am so proud that they are supporting these books and making it easy for anyone to have access to them. On this visit, I borrowed Jodi Picoult's book, Nineteen Minutes. I recommend you come visit and support this coffee/book shop in the VCU area. I definitely recommend it and plan to visit often. read more

I needed a place to work in the AC and went to Abi's Books and Brews and couldn't have been happier with the experience! Luck was on my side as I found street parking right in front of the shop. This place is a dream for anyone looking to get some work done. They've thoughtfully labeled each outlet, making it ideal for co-working. No more searching aimlessly for a spot to plug in--what a relief! I tried the chocolate croissant and americano, and both were fantastic. The croissant was flaky and delicious, and the americano provided just the right boost. Love the idea of combining a coffeehouse and bookstore-a cozy concept. Breakfast was delicious, and especially Iced Latte. Parking can be a bit difficult during school hours and seating is limited, so plan accordingly. Overall, though, I really loved the aesthetic and would come back. read more

Currently sitting at Abi's Books & Brews as I write this and I'm in heaven. The feminine urge to open a coffee shop that is also a bookstore comes alive at this cozy cafe. It's a Friday morning and it's packed. Every seat is filled with a mix of students typing away on laptops and friends catching up. I love the natural lighting that pools into the space and the charming bricked walls. Aesthetic is great here. There is a bookshelf filled with used books for purchase. It's a bit harder to access with all the people sitting in front of it, but you can easily say excuse me to peruse the books. It's really cool that they have special floating bookshelves with banned books in them. Although it is packed, it is spacious enough to not feel suffocating. I ordered a cherry bourbon pastry from Up All Night. I adored it. They offered to warm it up for me which I love. The filling was incredible. I also got their Lavender Lit Latte which is so yummy. It was really kind that they checked to confirm that it's ok that it isn't caffeinated. My friend ordered a Lavender Latte and liked it. We agreed my drink was the best of the two. I'm really enjoying this coffee shop and can't wait to return and play some cards or read a book here. read more

Books and Brews was an awesome find near the VCU campus. The atmosphere is everything you want from a cozy coffee shop where you can spend the afternoon lost in a book. Everyone working was super nice and helpful, with baristas who were knowledgeable on the menu and able to make well informed recommendations. What a cute and cozy little coffee shop and bookstore. I met a friend for coffee this weekend, and was excited to try one of their specialty drinks. I ordered the Cupid's Latte, but it came with strawberry syrup (they were out of raspberry syrup). I also had to grab a yummy chocolate croissant from Up All Night Bakery. I've never been in a shop like this, with walls filled with books that you can either read during your visit, or buy to take home. If you're looking for a different kind of coffee shop, you should definitely stop in. read more

Cozy place. When I went it was kind of quiet and relaxing, with several students studying or doing homework. It looks like a great place for that. They have a good and interesting selection of books. Super cozy! I was waiting for this place to open for a minute, and was definitely surprised when they did. Perfect study area while surrounded with books. A cafe bookstore is a genius idea, and I appreciate that they sell a wide range of books. When they have some, I definitely recommend their pastries. It seems like they make them fresh in the morning and sell them till they're out. They have unique coffee and tea options. Bonus points for not upcharging alternate milk options. Omg, a cozy, open late coffee shop in Richmond?! I'm jumping for joy! I walked in for one of their soft openings and was blown away by the ambiance this cute little cafe has. The wall of bookshelves (and adorable ladder on wheels) made me feel like I was in a movie. I got a latte which was strong and made well, and my friend got the coffee affogato which she loved (and went back for the next day). The staff were kind, and we even accidentally stayed after hours talking to one of the owners. He was insistent about Abi's being a safe space- he has a pride flag sticker on the door, was trans affirming, and was just a great person to talk to. I'm excited to get back here soon. read more

I am so thankful to have a "late night" and early morning coffee shop! I wish this was here when I was a student at VCU. Their coffee is so smooth and truly delicious. The treats are to die for...worth running an extra mile or two. It is nice to have a variety of seating areas. I once sat in nearly every corner in one day. I'm giving 3 stars because I really want to support a business like this but I was honestly really disappointed when I visited. My wife and I drove from the East End to check out this place. When we walked in there was some kind of group there having some kind of round table discussion and taking up the entire store. I don't know if it was just a one time thing or if it is planned with the owner or something but there were like 15 people sat in front of all of the books. I understand you want this to be a place where people can hang out and read or talk about your books and stuff but in the 20 minutes my wife and I were there, (sitting outside because it felt like we were intruding) we saw like 6 couples walk in and turn around to leave immediately. I don't remember seeing any of the group with coffees or anything, but even if they had had stuff before we got there, there's no way it's good for business for them to get one round of coffees and pastries, and then make the store inhospitable for any other customers for the next couple hours. We are still planning to give this place another shot and I'll change my review if we have a chance to have an actual experience, but this was not a great first impression. read more
