    Strawberry pie matcha

Came to the Purrfect Bean to try their new spring menu and it did not disappoint. I normally don't get Matcha at a café because I normally leave disappointed, but this Matcha was incredible. The strawberry pie flavor was amazing and I was still able to taste the Matcha as well. This drink was a little on the pricey side at about $10 (added the cold foam), but I still think it was worth it! The service was fast and friendly and the inside is so super cute. I love the concept of having kitties available for adoption. I only stopped in to grab a quick coffee, but would definitely come back for some kitty cuddles!

What a magical and special morning! My fiancé and I decided to visit The Purrfect Bean and had the perfect start to our day. We booked a 10am cat visit appointment. I highly recommend selecting the first appointment time because you will be the first people the cats social with for the day and they are EAGER to cuddle and play. We didn't have trouble finding parking nearby. It's free one hour street parking out front (longer if you have a permit). When we walked in we gave our name for the reservation and ordered some drinks. I got an incredible sweet potato catserole latte and my fiancé got a mocha. I adored my coffee. It was so delicious and brewed to perfection. I would come back alone for the coffee. There is only oat or macadamia nut milk available. I imagine this is because you can bring your lidded drinks into the cat room. They do have a cozy cafe space downstairs that is great to meet up with someone or get some work done. Cat visits on weekdays are $20 and $25 on weekends. The cat room is upstairs and they ask that people go up one group by one group so the cats don't zoom out of the space. They are pretty much all kittens up there. I loved their adoption polaroid wall. There is a person that stays in the room with you so you ask about adopting any cat. There is a QR code you can scan to get some of the cat names. We were a group of what felt like about ten people. We had 50 minutes to play and cuddle with the kitties. You're not allowed to pick up the kitties when standing, which wasn't a problem for us at all. A lot of them were SUPER cuddly in the morning. And most of them adored playing with all the string toys. I highly recommend visiting this super charming local business.

I had a great experience at The Purrfect Bean! The drinks are amazing and they always have unique specials for each month. I also had a cat room reservation. The staff was very friendly, the kitties were cute, and the space was clean and relaxing. I recommend The Purrfect Bean!

This was an interesting introduction to cat cafes, and certainly made for a novel experience. Accompanied my girlfriend and her siblings to the Purrfect Bean a little while ago and it was interesting. I am not personally much of a pet person but I can see the appeal of spending some time with some lively cats. And let me tell you, there are a LOT of them here. Some keep to themselves but there are enough to play with or hold, and plenty of cat toys to entertain them. Standard session is an hour, which seems like a fair amount of time. The room seems to accommodate around 8 maximum and we shared it with another couple there. While I did not partake in any drinks on this occasion, they did indeed have quite a selection downstairs, and it's nice to know they use the proceeds to keep the cats in good health. While I would not personally go out of my way for another experience like this, it served its purpose well and I strongly recommend it to cat lovers and caffeine addicts alike. Overall: 3.5 stars ---- Pros: - Lots of cats to hang out and play with, along with toys to keep them entertained. - $20 an hour for this seems pretty fair, though admittedly there's not a lot to compare that against. - Plenty of coffee drinks to choose from. Cons: - Parking in this area is always a nightmare but I got lucky on this occasion, hope you do too. - It's cats and coffee, basically. If that sounds great, you'll love it, though don't expect any frills or thrills beyond that.

My partner and I each had chai lattes that were very good. We enjoyed them in the inviting, downtown seating area. Also picked up a super cute t-shirt. Staff were friendly and engaging. Will make an appointment to meet some kitties in our next visit.

I lean more towards liking than disliking this place - I think there's a bit of room for improvement. I've had a total of three different drinks, on different days from this place - I really, truly only like the last one I had. *The others I regretted spending $8-$10 on.* I think more practice pulling shots of espresso for the staff would be good. $20-$25 dollars for the cat lounge is a bit pricey in comparison to the other cat cafes I've been too, which has to be at least 8 or so, in VA and other states as well. However, with the current demand? Sure, people will pay it. The ambiance of the place is nice, generally. HOWEVER, both of the last two times I've been, there was been a woman working behind the counter that comes off very abrasively. She is white, has blonde-ish hair with colored highlights. I don't think it's intentional, but I do think she could use some coaching with the customers. When I walked in today she was practically shouting all the guidelines of the lounge upstairs to a couple only a few feet away from her, across the counter. I could tell they were off-put and so was I. I don't believe that this is a one time occurrence, because she was like this was the last visit I went previously to as well. I share this information in hopes of a change, as I'd like for this cafe to do well! Not sure if maybe the guidelines regarding the lounge should maybe be carried out by the attendant upstairs. But the cafe space downstairs is small, there is no reason for the staff to be so loud. I understand for bigger groups who've reserved the tickets - but again, maybe that should be carried out upstairs. As the downstairs is acting as a normal coffee shop.

The decor has Polynesian touches, the drinks and food nod to Samoan flavors (like taro and Spam musubi), and you can tell it's a true family business built with a lot of pride and hard work. My friend and I first heard about this spot and literally drove about 25 minutes from Ghent Norfolk over to Bel-Aire Norfolk just to try it out, and it still remains one of our favorite coffee shops in Norfolk. Totally worth crossing town for. On my first visit, I got the Apelu Island Iced Latte, a Taro Cupcake with vanilla icing and toasted coconut, and a Spam Musubi with egg. That combo right there? Dangerous. The latte was smooth and lightly sweet with that pretty taro purple, the cupcake was super moist with the coconut giving it that little crunch on top, and the Spam Musubi with egg was the perfect salty-savory bite to go with my coffee instead of the usual basic breakfast sandwich. Second visit, I pulled back up for their Taro Pumpkin Roll Latte with oat milk (one of their fall specials), and I'm still thinking about it. It tasted like fall but with that island twist; cozy, a little earthy from the taro, and not overly sweet. Just really well-balanced and comforting. The staff has been warm and welcoming every time I've gone in; smiling, chatting with customers, and making it feel like a neighborhood spot even if you drove in from across town. It's the kind of place where you can sit, catch up with a friend, get some work done, or just enjoy your drink and snack without feeling rushed. If you're anywhere in Norfolk and haven't tried Apelu Island Cafe yet, go. From the lattes to the taro treats to the musubi, it's one of those places that makes you want to become a regular. I was a bit disappointed that they only offer whole or oat milk, as I was used to having more milk options (like low fat or nonfat). I can't drink whole milk and I'm not a big fan of oat milk. The barista recommended that I try the oat milk and said if I didn't like the drink, they would make me something else. I asked for light oak milk and hoped for the best. My latte was served in layers, so I got a big blast of oat milk in my first sip, but after I mixed my latte, it tasted so much better. The coconut flavor really came through and offset the oat milk flavor. I was really happy with my drink and with the super helpful barista. I'll for sure be coming back!

As anyone can see by my other reviews, I give a lot of 4 and 5-star ones, and am generally not a complainer. When I rate something low, there's really a reason. There was nothing for me to like about this place. First, there was no signage to speak of. It wasn't real easy to find. I didn't even know I had found the right place until I saw the name of the place on the bags of coffee. When I came in, it was a cold feeling, not a friendly one. Every person I dealt with behind the counter wasn't warm or inviting. I got the feeling that they felt I "should have known" where to order, and "should have known" where to wait, or to pick up my coffee. I got a takeout hot coffee but had to interrupt and kindly ask for a lid. And when I did I got a vibe like I was an irritation or something. I went out to the car with my coffee and told my husband I hoped it was really outstanding coffee with what I had to go through to get it. And you know what, it wasn't all that great. It's not worth going back for. I don't get why people like or recommend this place.
