This was my second time visiting Black Lodge & I now have added it to my list as one of my absolute favorite bars/cafes in the Richmond area. For a Saturday night, the atmosphere was lively but not overwhelmingly so. It is a small space so I was very happy that there were still side tables available to sit at & enjoy our food & conversation. The staff were very welcoming, helpful & courteous. & although my husband were probably the most aged patrons in the place, we never felt out of place & I sincerely appreciated that we were able to go there & feel comfortable being a part of the Saturday night community. IYKYK As for the food. The Fried mushrooms were absolutely yummy. They were crunchy on the outside with a light & fluffy texture to the mushrooms inside. We ordered the Chicago Dog & the Sloppy Joe Dog & Black Lodge has the BEST hot dogs I have ever tasted! & believe me I have eaten a lot of hotdogs in my lifetime. Their hotdogs are juicy & full of flavor. My husband is still talking about their hotdogs a day later & how we have to go back again[this was his first visit]. For drinks we had the Jager-Rita, Miller High Life Pony & Green Tea shot. They all were great & complimented our food perfectly. The Green tea shot was so smooth, I definitely recommend trying it If shots are your forte & even if they are not. I am not a shot person but I really enjoyed this particular drink. I definitely recommend Black Lodge if you enjoy a very casual, laid back bar/cafe type of restaurant that has food & drinks that are very upscale but reasonably priced. Also, the atmosphere is very bright & bubbly. A perfect Saturday night hang out type of vibe. So once again I definitely highly recommend giving this establishment a try! read more

Ok I am so pumped that I finally got to try the hot dogs here. It's been my Roman Empire for a year now after a failed attempt (kitchen was closed) last year during their holiday pop up. Just updating my review to say I ended up back at their holiday pop-up. This year was holiday movie themed. My friends as I came here as a little pregame before dancing at LOSO's Love Club. We adored our Polar Express drinks. Even though Christmas is over, I'd go back to have that drink countless times. This place just oozes cool. I've said it before, I'll say it again, it's such a great vibe. The people who work here are real and kind. It's a fantastic, unassuming spot that's great for a group of friends or even a first date. Black Lodge, tucked next to Brenner Pass in the back of Scott's Addition, is a great option for a late-night drink or a bite to eat. After 9 pm, they just have regular hot dogs, which is fine by me. They used to have a lazy Susan of sauce options, including a fantastic horseradish mustard, but now they only have regular mustard and ketchup. I hope they plan to bring the better sauces back sometime. It's also where you can find the fondue frites that Brenner took off their menu and now no longer serve as an off-menu option. They were one of my favorite dishes that Brenner offered, so I'm glad they live on somewhere. Drinks are good, often extra strong, and they mix up the list quite frequently, which is nice. They have beer, wine, and cocktails, some of which are frozen. Service is perfunctory - usually the same 2-3 people working in there, and they're never ones for conversation. I had a fun night at Black Lodge. It's a small bar with a good ambiance. There are multiple seating areas, such as at the bar, a couch, and multiple tables. In addition to specialty drinks, the also have a really unique menu of hot dogs and wings. It is located in the heart of Scott's Addition and there are numerous places nearby if you want to walk around on a night out. There are numerous street parking options, but be prepared that the weekends get very busy! read more

The perfect spot in richmond for drinks! You walk in and it is the perfect combination of new and fresh, while still feeling very cozy! The dark walls and red lighting make it feel warm and intimate even when it's bright outside. The perfect place to grab a drink with friends after work. I had the espresso martini and it is one of the best ones I have had in the city! It was the perfect level of sweet without going overboard! We split the fondue fries as a little snack and ended up skipping dinner the servings were so large! The fries where to die for! Love black lodge!! Such a cool spot for drinks and fun food that definitely fits the Scott's Addition vibe - industrial but more quaint and chill than most drink places in the area. I love the feel of the space. We sat at the bar; there are a good amount of tables of various sizes in the back. The espresso martini is delicious! Weird vibe here. Maybe it was an off night, but service was poor. Bartenders were grumpy towards several customers while we were there, didn't clean tables, and there were no drink menus in sight. The food was also disappointed for the price. Very greasy, soggy, and thin sandwiches for $16, and while the dogs might be better I unfortunately don't think we'll be giving this place a second visit. read more

Stopped in to Black Lodge for their music themed Holiday Pop-Up. Me and a friend went on a Wednesday evening around 7pm. Not too crowded, not too loud, nice staff, and good drinks! Location: a little hard to find when we were walking around outside, but there was plenty of street parking which was great. Are is very walkable and clean as well. Decor: really cute interior. Lots of tinsel and lights, which I appreciated. Everywhere I looked there were decorations, which I loved since that's what I came for! Plenty of photo-worthy spots in the bar (holiday bathroom selfies not included in this review, but they were taken). Ambiance: the music they played all night was AWESOME. It was not Christmas music, but it matched the vibe of their music themed menu, and me and my friend both really enjoyed the playlist. The lighting is perfect, not too dark to see the menus but still chill. The crowd was manageable and relatively quiet, so we could have great conversation without yelling at each other! Drinks: all 4 we tried were really good! I got the Enter Snowman (pictured) which was really gingerbread-y and yummy. Really festive, and the powdered sugar on top and decorative glass was so cute! I also got the Gifts of an Angel, which had a nice classic ginger honey flavor, and was slightly more strong. That one was served in a short glass with a king cube. Fairly priced for a themed bar in Scott's Addition, both drinks and top ended up being around $32. Overall: We had a great time! Bartenders were all very kind and attentive without being overbearing. Drinks were good, there was plenty of seating, and the theme was well done and felt really festive. My only regret is not coming hungry- the food looked AMAZING. Would recommend! read more

When you walk into Black Lodge, you'll see a sign that reads "Damn Fine," a mantra that guides everything within this little all-day cafe in Scott's Addition. From its neighbor, Brenner Pass, comes a cafe and market. During the pandemic, there isn't indoor seating, but there are a few tables outside by fire pits keeping you warm. Their food can be ordered for pickup ahead of time or for delivery through Grubhub. The menu is pretty diverse with burgers, flat breads, salads and more. I ordered the double Smash Burger and I was not disappointed. It tasted like a gourmet Big Mac. My wife's onion and bacon flatbread was good too. Our housemate ordered the celery root salad and said it lacked flavor. The market sells cans of wine/beer and a few other items. If you're in the area, Black Lodge is worth checking out! read more

I enjoyed getting take-out from Black Lodge during the pandemic; their to-go sandwiches and burgers were a nice pick-me-up. However, this was my first time trying Black Lodge since it had been converted into a cozy bar serving up cocktails and snacks. In contrast to its attached restaurant Brenner Pass, Black Lodge offers no-frills cocktails and bar food like wings, hot dogs, and patty melts with an Alpine twist. The warm atmosphere, friendly bartenders, and comfort food make the new Black Lodge an enjoyable place to grab a drink and late-night snack! I highly recommend checking it out! read more

I am a huge fan of Black Lodge and really everything Brenner pass/Metzger does!!! I've popped over twice now after ordering online and it was so easy. They are all masked and following all safety rules. We tried lunch foods the first trip and can highly recommend the fondue smash burger and the fried chicken Sammie. Both were delicious and huge, if not a little messy. Two hand Sammies!! Our next trip we got breakfast foods and I tried their Cereal Milk Latte made with Cinnamon Toast Crunch and it is as good as it sounds!! If you like sweet, cinnamon coffee then this is for you! I loved it! I also got the smoked fish, egg and cheese bagel with was so perfect and my husband got their porchetta egg and cheese. He said it's great! We also saw they have a curated wine to go selection and a cheese case. GET THE CHEESE!!!! Their selection while small is some of the best cheese you can get around here and it's well priced. I recently did their Cave Culture Cheese tasting classes via zoom and tried some of the best cheese of my life. I'm amazed that I can just walk in and buy cheese that I can't find at even the expensive grocery stores. This place is a gem and so easy to get to and park at. A great to go option. We took it on a picnic. The food was full of unique flavors I hadn't had before. Short Rib- Loved the taste and texture of the beef, it was crispy on the outside, but melt in your mouth on the inside. Really great flavor as well. The polenta was SO yummy. Cheese Trio- Loved the hard cheese but I'm not a fan of brie or the other soft cheese they used (not their fault, just not my preference), all of the things that came with it were delicious. The only thing we weren't fans of was the apricot spread- it was an Italian item that had mustard in it. It was unique though which I appreciated. Chocolate Torte- it had a lot of potential, but it was very dry. A dense dessert is wonderful but it needed more moisture. I tried to add whipped cream to balance it out but it was still too crumbly. We also ordered white wine which was chilled (thanks!). The preorder was easy and the pick up went smoothly! It was great :) I would be happy to go back here or to Brenner Pass if/when it reopens based on this meal. read more

From the creators who brought you Brenner Pass, introducing the Harissa Fried Chicken Sandwich at the Black Lodge. Taste: First impression; This is the big chungus of chicken sandwiches. These chickens must be pumped with stratospheric artificial growth hormones, because this voluminous specimen was practically leaping out of the bun. The excessive fried breading dressed the chicken in a coat of recklessness and intimidation. This beast was garnished with lettuce strands, drizzled with mystery red and white sauces, and adorned with seductive sweet red peppers and suave feta cheese chunks. First bite; a moist mouthful of meat and crunchiness. Mildly seasoned, the superior quality big chungus chicken breast is clearly meant to be the star of the show. With each subsequent bite, formed a carefully orchestrated symphony of flavors. The peppers and feta are certainly a unique refreshing twist to adventurous chicken sandwich enthusiasts. Price: $13 for the sandwich and potato chips. The serving size was a force to be reckoned with, but it is slightly overpriced considering you only get chips with it. Service: Takeout order with approximately 10 minute wait. For a fine establishment such as this, my service needs are met to with satisfaction. I was excited for an off-the-beaten-path bar to open up and having recently been to the adjacent restaurant I quickly made plans to return to Black Lodge. The drinks were delicious and the bartenders clearly take pride in their creations. The mood was intimate but not too formal. I ended up ordering the fish and chips which was so delicious and an easily shareable portion size. I was a little disappointed with the service, we ordered our first round of drinks and told the server we'd be ordering food but needed a minute with the menu. It was about 45min before we weee able to flag down someone again to order a second round and food which was surprising for such a small space. Overall it was a good experience but I do wish the service was a bit better, which was my experience with Bremerton Pass the associated restaurant as well so I went into it knowing that might be the case. I would certainly encourage anyone to try it out and see if it's your cup of....whatever you alcohol of choice may be. read more
