Great food but pricey. I've had much more authentic Shanghainese food elsewhere, and would rate the soup dumplings and pan fried pork buns at a 3/5, but the noodles were fantastic 5/5. The other dumplings were pretty good at a 4/5. The food was pretty filling, and we ended up spending $30/person with some leftovers and very full stomachs. I dined at 6pm on a Saturday and the place immediately filled up afterwards. It's cafeteria style so you pay then your food is available at the counter. The staff don't regulate the tables much, so people who haven't ordered ended up taking seats while some people who got their food were standing and waiting for a table. This place is a McDonald's version of Chinese soup dumpling. They have opened two locations around Boston area. The menu has very limited selections but I have to say that their soup dumpling is not bad at all. It depends on the time you visit, sometimes it is very crowded. I would give Nan Xiang Express 3.5/5. I have been to the one in NYC and that was is phenomenal. Nan Xiang Express is just that, an express. It is relatively small. You order your items from a tablet and they bring you the food. When we went there on Tuesday night, they were pretty busy and when we ordered from the tablet, the receipt did not print. This seems to be the casual version of the original Nan Xiang in Flushing NYC, which I loved to go to. While not quite the same (the broth in the soup dumplings not as flavorful and the dumpling skins are more soft and less bouncy), these are still better than other spots I've tried in Boston as their xiao long bao skins are thin but hold the soup inside well without bursting . Would come back if I was specifically craving soup dumplings and can't wait until I'm back in NYC or Cali. Service is very efficient. Another small restaurant opening in Chinatown that packs a punch for soup dumplings. I ordered ahead using their online website and it was super simple. The restaurant is pretty small with not too many tables to sit at. I got #1 pork soup dumplings and #2 pork & crab soup dumplings, which were ready for pickup when I arrived. The packaging is done so well and the bag is even insulated to keep your food warm. After my long journey home, the soup dumplings were room temperature and they still tasted great. I didn't have to burn my tongue drinking the soup. The skin is soft and there's plenty of meat filling inside. I'd highly recommend trying their soup dumplings out if you're in the area. read more

The seating situation is so painful!! It's very stressful trying to get a table!!! It's a small place and full of people. The crowd is a good sign, because the food is absolutely amazing! The soup dumplings tasted very close to in Shanghai, besides the ginger slices are not the same at all. Other items were also great. Very fast service, you can order on the machine or order with the staff there. If we didn't manage to get a table I don't think my experience will be as good. If you live close by and want to take out it is perfect. The soup dumplings will not be as good if you let it sit for too long. I suggest eat it there, if course, if you can find a table. I personally absolutely didn't enjoy the seating situation. It's too bad because I love their food a lot. Maybe go back during a time not too many people. The crispy bottom pork buns are ever so slightly browned on the bottom, and there is very little filling and flavor, mostly mushy bun. This place was really good! I actually thought it was quite comparable to the one in Flushing, NY. Came here for a weekday lunch and it was pretty busy. You can order at a kiosk or at the counter, and seating was pretty limited. However, diners go in and out pretty quickly- we only waited about 5 minutes and a seat opened up. My husband and I got the soup dumplings and pan-fried pork buns. Both were so good! The skin on the soup dumplings were thin but strong, and did not break when I pick the bun up unlike other places. The broth was hot and flavorful and the meat was juicy and delicious. That was definitely my favorite thing we had. The pan-fried pork buns also came out hot and steaming. The bottom was perfectly browned and the meat was incredibly juicy. The only downside was that the buns were a bit small for how much we paid! Lastly- I think this place is on the edge of worth it for me. $10 for 6 soup dumplings and $8 for 4 small pan fried buns is pretty dang pricey. This is definitely somewhere I'd like to come back to, but probably not often because then my wallet would be unhappy. read more

About $25 feeds two, and is over the top in taste and texture. In addition squeaky clean and modern with a high tech ordering system. Loved the music and the water while I waited a whole 7 minutes. The packaging kept ingredients hot and separated until I was home. Result at home was perfect and nothing was soggy just as the chef intends. What's worse then soggy noodles or limp dumplings? We paid just over $40 for everything, which was a pretty reasonable price considering how much food it was. I really enjoyed everything I ate too, nothing completely blew me away but it met my expectations. My favorite was probably the wontons in peanut sauce, which was something I never had before but I really enjoyed the flavor combinations and textures of the dish. Not a bad spot for dumplings but compared to Gourmet Dumpling house and the original Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao in NYC, it was slightly disappointing. We got pork soup dumplings, pork chive and shrimp dumplings, and the pan fried udon with shrimp. The soup dumplings were not bad they were decent but I was expecting the ones from Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao which were overloaded with soup didn't get deflated and tasted like they were made to order. The soup did not leak out which is a plus but they didn't taste like homemade soup dumplings which is probably expected for a fast service to go chain. Pork chive and shrimp dumplings were my least favorite because the dough was thick and almost mushy. The filling was fine. Pan fried udon was good the shrimps added nice flavor but they still were not tasting as fresh as the noodles from Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao. Lastly, the only thing that is annoying is the seating situation. I personally think soup dumplings should be eaten right away and there's only 6 tables and it's first come first serve for the tables. If you plan on eating there you have to wait for your food and if there's no table available you have to wait or eat somewhere else. And not everyone sitting at the tables is mindful of the fact that people are waiting for a table to sit. You can order at the front if you like Definitely wouldn't come here to eat in with more than one other person as most tables are seats for 2. If I was in the area, I would get if I was looking for some comfort to go food. The XLB had good flavor but little meat inside and flavor was good but dough was so thick. It has very limited seating inside so it makes sense to do the Express format. Overall I wasn't impressed. I definitely have preferred my visits to the sit-down Nan Xiang in NYC. Soup dumplings to-go are probably just not a good idea, and the soy sauce nian gao was far inferior to the one with mustard greens and pork. Still in its soft opening phase, Nan Xiang fills every soup dumpling lover's dream. LOCATION: Right in the center of Chinatown, the space is hard to miss but parking is hard to find. SPACE: Very small but very clean. There's a self serve area for water and a giant self ordering machine. MENU: There are lots of options so perfect place to order a little bit of everything and try with friends. FOOD: We tried the crabmeat soup dumpling and the regular pork soup dumpling. If it was eaten on the spot, it would have been so much better but takeout versions weren't bad. The crabmeat soup dumpling tasted a tad sweeter than the the pork but overall there wasn't enough crabmeat taste. We also ordered the stir fry rice cakes which were very delicious. The scallion beef pancake was also perfect. The pan fried crabmeat buns didn't have enough crab flavor nor was it overflowing with juices - kinda disappointed. I wasn't a fan of the crispy noodles either. FINAL THOUGHTS: I would try it again but order different foods. But the crab meat is going fancy and spicy beef for that warm fuzzy feeling. They're amazing! The noodles are also to die for. Cucumber salad is a big portion. The flavors are more umami than tangy or tart like you'd get at a Japanese restaurant. Peanut sauce wontons are more like chili oil wontons and are spicy (there are no peanuts in it so I assume it's the peanut oil vs actual peanuts in the sauce). Pork Soup Dumplings I'd give it a 3.8/5! Size of the soup dumplings was way smaller than I expected though, but the broth was light and flavorful and overall the dumpling is pretty solid. I just wish the dumpling itself had more pork filling and soup inside to make up for the dumpling size and just give something more to it. As for the Beef Fried Rice Cakes, it had the potential to be really good if all the sauce at the bottom really stuck to the rice cakes. The sauce was liquidity so it didn't soak too much and was a bit oily for my taste. I really love the chewy rice cakes, beef and mushrooms in it, but I recommend it to be a little saltier to bring out the flavor more. The portion for the fried rice cakes was perfect to share though! Gave this spot another try after my initial experience on the night of their computer glitch. Sadly, it's not looking like it's going to be a consistent experience. I tried more dishes this time beyond the soup dumplings and was very underwhelmed. Most of the dishes lacked any nuance--the wonton in spicy peanut sauce basically just tasted like sweet peanut butter. The wonton soup was drowning in seaweed and was pretty flavorless beyond the seaweed note (which I normally like but it did not work at all here.) There was another dish whose name I cannot recall now that was basically a lackluster noodle stirfry. The exception was the braised beef soup, which was quite good both times! I actually enjoyed the soup dumplings more cold when I had to take my order home last time than I did having them warm dining in this time. Still, the soup dumplings are good enough and the only reason to go here. In terms of the service, due to the fierce competition for tables, they do not clean the tables between customers at all, so you are on your own with that. This review pertains to a visit I had to this location earlier today. The staff was very nice and helpful as I ordered, it was after I sat down and discovered a health/safety issue that things were not dealt with properly. I didn't realize things were going to continue being dealt with improperly after bringing it to the staff's attention, and it makes me wish I stopped eating my food after that, as I wonder what else doesn't get dealt with properly. I was sitting at a table, pouring vinegar or soy sauce into my container, when I saw something that looked like a small grain of rice fall out. I was about to take it out and continue eating, but it looked too much like a worm. I looked at it for a few seconds and it didn't move, but gave it a few more seconds and it started swimming. I went up to the counter and quietly told one guy behind the counter about the situation and which bottles I poured it from. He took my container and brought it back to the kitchen, came out, and didn't say anything to me. Next, my food came out and I asked the (second) guy if the sauce which it came with was from a fresh container. He said something along the lines of sounding like yes and walked away. Sadly, I decided to eat my entire meal without any sauce, not wanting to risk it. All this time, no one came to my table to deal with the soy sauce/vinegar containers on my table which had contained the worm. At the end of my meal, I decided to go to a THIRD worker and explain the situation. He said he did something to deal with it. I didn't understand this, because the containers were on my table and no one did anything to them. I left shortly after this, seeing no one take any action, and no one taking it seriously.
