Murphy's is my most favorite spot in the Highlands for brunch (I'll get to the other meals and times-of-day that are great here in a sec!). Worth the wait, which can be awhile on the weekends . . . starting with coffee or a mimosa if you're inclined, the menu is a perfect combo of breakfast and lunch foods. The service is great, and they will make dishes with custom requests - I recommend the Eggs San Francisco, but I like my eggs scrambled. The burgers are terrific too, and one of my regular brunch partners loves their smoked salmon and bagel combo. Murphy's is also a good dinner date place, and their wine cellar is terrific. Sunday nights are a good pick for a seat at the small bar, and if you're having a special dinner party and need some good suggestions on wine to serve, the Murphy's staff will help you out! read more

I have been to Murphy's for brunch four times in the past six months. It is a true brunch spot. There is always a wait whenever we get there normally between 12 and 1 on a Sunday. the good news is that the Hostess/Host is always fairly precise (to within 5 minutes) when quoting the wait time. In the interim we tend to grab our coffee. they serve a strong Berkley California coffee that does the trick. The place itself is busy, yes the wait staff is busy, but given that they do have 6 or 7 tables at once I have always found them to be very proficient, accurate and at times funny. The bread basket always has something original and good in it. 90% of the brunch entrees are like $9-13 which for this level of establishment seems like a steal to me. I have had the Pork Chop with Paprika, The standard sausage and eggs, the malt waffle and the crab cake sandwich. Everything has always been superb. We usually get a refill or two of coffee in the dining room and then ask for one to go. It is a Concentrics Restaurant, but feels less corporate then the other chains in that franchise. The Friends of Murphy's Cards, and general genuine feel of the establishment being over 20 years old help lend to this sentiment. I like this place. read more

Deliciousness !!!! Went to Murphy's Friday night for dinner and loved everything about it. We were immediately greeted upon arrival. Our waitresses name was Jessica and she was great ! Super helpful when it came to all our questions about the menu. She had great recommendations too. Ordering was difficult because everything on the menu Sounds so good. We started with the calamari which was perfectly crispy and tasty. I ordered the Guinness Braised Brisket and my girlfriend had the chefs special of the evening which was the Swordfish. The Brisket was perfecttttttt. It was so tender and juicy. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. And the mashed potatoes served with it were also delicious!! We finished the evening with some espresso and the Bonzo pie. The Bonzo is to die for. It's fudge brownie, cheesecake, and dark chocolate mousse! So good. Everyone raves about their brunch, but we ended up coming for dinner with some of my bf's family. Parking can be a nightmare in Virginia Highlands, but they offer valet. Reservations were made prior, so we were seated promptly once everyone arrived. Our server greeted us promptly and was great throughout the evening. The menu was limited in my opinion, but everyone enjoyed their food. Complimentary bread and olive oil was brought out. It was very plain, so the waiter brought out balsamic vinegar and other seasonings so that we could add some flavor to the olive oil. I ordered the rum punch and is was delicious the on the first round. The second one must've been made by a different bartender because it didn't taste as good. I decided on the pepper shrimp with sticky rice as my meal. The flavors were outstanding! It was sweet, a little spicy and savory. I do wish the portion was larger though. I'd recommend ordering an appetizer as well if you get this dish. Another standout that received kudos from our group was the ribeye steak. We had a great time and the service was good. I'll tell you once I received the invite to this place for a friends birthday and viewed the menu, I wasn't looking forward to coming here. Most times I find that places that are considered "classy casual" are way more hype (read:expensive) than they need to be but I actually ended up being pleased with the food and service that our party received. It has a nice layout, but is not the place to go if you want to be slightly loud. Maybe the bar area is louder than the dining room, but I kept feeling like I needed to lower my voice in the dining room. I viewed the menu beforehand, and wasn't impressed with the $20+ entrees and even less so with the $15+ salads. I understand that its all farm fresh etc, but I'm under the impression that should make it a little cheaper. Our waitress, Sarah, was new and went over the 5 minute spill of the restaurant specials and all the other stuff I tuned out since I had made up my mind before going of what I was going to order. She was super nice and very knowledgeable of the restaurant in the short time she has worked there. I went with the Oysters ($11), which technically is a shared plate item and mashed potatoes ($6) which is a side item and is not sold together as an entree. That was the only thing on the entire menu that appealed to me, and both were fantastic. I received 6 oysters (which makes me wonder how this is a shared plate) and a nice amount of mashed potatoes. Someone else in my party had the Spinach and Sausage meatloaf, she'd been here before and had that dish, and was familiar with it so, that was an easy selection for her and she was pleased with it this time also. Another person had the Roasted Mountain chicken, and I was quite impressed with the size of the chicken breast and she stated that it was flavored very well. Our server had described it as "African" flavored, and neither of us knew what that meant, but the person that had it said that it was like curry flavored, but not really curry tasting. I'm still lost. Another had the brisket which came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable mixture, she'd eaten it before I got done with my six oysters, so I have to give that a plus based on her. Since it was two people in our party birthday, (mines and my friends) we asked about birthday desserts and was told that we could choose two, which we did. There was no mention at that time that it wasn't complimentary, so I was surprised to see it at half price on my tab. I had the grilled pound cake and was not only mesmerize at how pretty it was displayed, but it was also VERY tasty. The amount of peaches I received on the dessert allowed me to give each person in our party at least 2-3 to taste. The other birthday person had the Mocha cake. It also was displayed beautifully, but was super rich in taste. Its like death by chocolate to the tenth power. The winner of the evening was the cucumber martinis ($15), which are not on the menu, but Sarah asked the bartender to make me one and she did, and it was better than any other I've had this summer, so I suggested to her that she tells those in charge to put that on the menu. The only complaint I have, was I asked for extra cucumbers, and she came back and said the bartender said she was out of cucumbers, which is probably unlikely since they have a drink on the menu that includes cucumbers (Green Machine) and when I initially asked about a cucumber flavored drink, both the waitress at the bar and Sarah suggested that particular drink to me, so I doubt they all of sudden ran out of cucumbers after two cucumber martinis. I would think if someone spent $30 on two drinks, they should be able to have all the cucumber garnish they like from a place that is "local farm supplied". I wouldn't make plans to go back, but would consider it if someone invite me. read more

Yearly, a fellow foodie picks a place to go celebrate his birthday dinner. This happens to be the location picked for 2015. We got there right on time for our reservations, so our party got seated. Ordered drinks and quickly got our menu, just to find out it was a special menu with "Happy Birthday Terrence" On the top, nice touch Murphy's. We ordered some appetizers to share and paired them with some wines. Later got out entrees, which were great, I ordered the Roasted Springer Mountain Chicken, which was amazing by itself. Extremely disappointing visit to Murphy's. The hostess was very rude, condescending and had an attitude the minute we walked through the door. They took COVID precautionary measures, however, were very dumb about it. For example, masks were required and they took your temp, but all the staff members were wearing the same gloves the entire time we were there. Yes, the same contaminated gloves that traveled from table to table. I'd rather them not wear gloves so they could at least wash their hands often. Remember when I told you they took your temp? They didn't even look to see what the temperatures was. The food was subpar, however, the mimosas and our server were fantastic. Oh, one more thing. When we received our checks, the recommended gratuity was incorrect in the calculations - Adding much more to the amount than what the actual percentage is. Although it might seem very clever, it is incredibly dishonest and takes advantage of the people who overlook the tip percentage amount or might be too intoxicated to notice. This is such a beautiful gem in Virginia Highlands. Valet parking is there which is so nice given the area. I ordered salmon which was cooked perfectly and served with a green and rice. Oh my! I came to Murphy's once with a friend for some sangria back in 2013 I believe. It was good but I didn't write home about it. I came a second time some years later for dinner and had one of the best burgers ever, and a bruschetta appetizer with goat cheese and marinara. I dreamt about both for the next few days. I came back a third time a few weeks after that for brunch. I didn't just write home about it. I called my boss, my local congressperson, my pastor ...hell, I told every and anybody who would listen! From the service to the food, to the post-brunch cocktails, the whole experience was damn near magical! It's been a while now but I remember having a basket of their fresh baked goods, some mimosas, the housemate sausage, and one of the omelet specials of the day. Then I went to the bar for a very herbaceous cocktail of sorts; I think one with cranberry and another with lemon. I just know that after brunch, I wanted more alcohol but something with produce in it so that it could feel more like a health drink and I wouldn't feel as guilty. So I waited too long to write this review and now I can't describe all of the great flavors that I tasted in detail because I forgot many of the specifics but I do know that I'll be back to dine at some point once the COVID safety protocols are rolled back a bit. Had brunch today! Absolutely loved it! My husband and I love splitting things that we get so we can try more than one thing... We split the Portobello Frittata & Eggs Virginia Highland! Both were great! We would 1000% the Eggs Virginia Highland again!!! Next time we would get the toppings of the frittata in an omelette instead!! I visited this restaurant on the recommendation of someone for the first time on Sunday, June 10th at about 11:30am with a party of two. We were seated promptly indoors. Our server was friendly; however, not over the top enthusiastic. (Nothing wrong with this) The interior of the establishment reminds me of an old home that was divided up into several rooms and redone to make it look more contemporary and casual-elegant. Unfortunately, I thought the food was just a-ok. A-ok is good; however, there are a lot of excellent restaurants around. I had the Hazelnut french toast, and my partner had the shrimp and cheddar grits. The grits were petty good; however, the hazelnut crusted french toast --- I couldn't tell the difference between that and any other french toast that I would get at a restaurant far less comparable -- maybe Ihop. I was honestly expecting more; however, maybe I should not have went in with such high expectations. Will I try it again? I probably would try it again. There were a lot of things on the menu; however, based on other reviews, I think if I tried it again, I would come for dinner. read more

My friends and I came here for brunch this past Sunday. There wasn't much parking, but they do offer valet for just $2. We were quoted a wait for a party of 4 for 30 minutes. I think we were only standing around for maybe 10 when we were called to be seated. They offer complimentary biscuits and lemon poppyseed muffins with a mixed berry and Georgia apple jams. THE BISCUITS WERE DELICIOUS!!! Our overall entrees were the chilaquiles, shrimp and grits, kale salad, French toast, and the ham omelette. Everything was quite good! The assortment of biscuits and mini muffins they bring before the meal are so good and came with a triad of goodness: butter, apple pie flavored jam/jelly and a mixed berry jam/jelly. For my main meal, I ordered the corner beef hash and it was delicious. It had a good amount of meat, the hollandaise sauce was really good and it's very filling. If you come way before 11 AM, you might get a chance at a table. No reservations are taken. And with a large group (like 6) seating, it can be on the longer end. A lot of tables freed up for seating for two, but the crowd of people coming in after 12 noon makes the wait to be up to 2 hours. Good thing the bf and I arrived around 11:30 AM and put our names in so the wait was only 45 mins to an hr for a party of 6. My friend recommended the French toast, and it was surely delicious. Yes, sometimes French toast is boring as it comes, but this one was super good. The caramelized syrup with the banana gave it a nice touch. The bf's burger was pretty tasty as well. Now coupled with the bread basket that finally came after a long wait, we were full until dinner time (and after a bike ride too). Oh. The intriguing blueberry mimosa... It was a waste for me to try it. I honestly just recommend getting the regular mimosa since the there were only 3 blueberries in mine and the rest was a blueberry shot of vodka. That's why there is a price difference. You're basically paying for the extra shot and a few blueberries. Parking sucks. Unless you want to valet the sucker, there's no chance at getting a spot in the front of the restaurant as Murphy's is positioned at a strange corner angle, and parking just isn't available unless you valet it. Just find a nice cozy spot around the residential neighborhood that's only 1 or 2 blocks away. read more

Murphy's is my go to spot for brunch. I come here all the time. I really really love the bread baskets and that's really what keeps me coming back!! They always switch out what type of biscuits they are serving. I went one time in 2017 and they had fruity pebble biscuits. I really wish they would bring those back! I've been back so many times since then asking for those specific biscuits but they don't seem to have them. The food is delicious though. I always get the omelette with the grits and I absolutely love my food! I would recommend making a reservation for the weekend brunch because it does get very busy. The parking can be kind of tricky. There is street parking and a few parking spots available. Overall, this is a great place to come with family for celebrations. I normally celebrate birthdays or special occasions here. Several staff members (including the manager) were unable to answer questions regarding items that were safe to consume for a member of our party. When we asked to speak to the chef directly (after attempting to order three times), we were told he was too busy with a large table. One of my favorite restaurants, lost my business due to poor management. Went here Sunday night arrived at 8:08. Online it says they close at 9pm. Was greeted by shauna who told us she couldn't seat us because they stopped sitting ppl at 8. We said we are regulars and come here often, and just drive 45 mins to eat here. She then told us that since we are regulars we should have known that they changed they're hours due to COVID 3 weeks ago. This was the part that was extremely rude because I told her everything online says 9pm not 8. And then we asked if we could place a Togo order. She then said my kitchen has been closed. Which I'm confused how the kitchen could be shut down only 8 mins after 8pm. All she offered us was a cookie. I've been coming to this restaurant for the past 7 years because I love their beef brisket. Due to poor management i won't be returning, and I won't be recommending it to others. The best part was the manager then telling me she checked Yelp and google and is showed 8 as the closing time. I've heard that it get pretty busy on Sundays with a 45-60 minute wait. Loved the bread basket with the muffins and biscuits. Well this is a disappointing one to write... When I lived in Atlanta 13 years ago I absolutely loved Murphy's and was here once a week. Although it is still super cute and the service is great the food has really taken a turn downhill. We started with a meat and cheese plate which was just fine and we had the grilled artichoke which was mushy and tasted like olive oil with no seasoning unfortunately we sent it back. I had the steak and Fries which was tasty enough and my wife had the salmon which tasted like elevated cafeteria food. We both also had the "chicken tortilla soup" which tasted like room temperature but I did baby food. So sad to have this experience here. read more
