After sitting and watching everyone's food come out and you're starving, all of the food looks good. But our food was just okay. It wasn't anything spectacular. My friend and I got the mahi mahi fish sandwich. It was honestly just okay. We both had a glass of their sparking rosé, which was refreshing and sweet. We also had the grilled pound cake--waaaaayyy too sweet for me. I ended up with a headache after a few bites. I think it was just too sugary. But it may work for others--it just didn't do it for me. They also have on the lunch menu that they add a 20% gratuity automatically to ensure a livable wage for their servers. Now, I make sure to tip and tip well for any service, but my thought is that, shouldn't the restaurant just pay the servers a livable wage? I have mixed feelings about that because I definitely think people should be paid livable wage and much of that responsibility should come from the establishment. This is a hidden gem in Virginia Highlands. My daughter and I went here for brunch and I really enjoyed the food. They have a kids menu which was a pleasant surprise. I ordered the pancakes for my daughter and I ordered a half order French toast which comes with caramelized banana and whip cream. I also ordered a side of chicken sausage. It was a little spicy but cooked crispy which I love. They have different flavors of mimosa. This was the first time I even had a cake that tastes like that. The smoked salmon flatbread it was delicious all the flavors that was on there was just so Good! There's a reason Murphy's has been in business for as long as they have. Actually, there are several reasons. A dear friend and I met for brunch yesterday (we made a booking last week, please do this before you go) and the experience was wonderful! We were seated outside (per our request) at a lovely corner table. John was our server and he was great! He greeted us upon arrival and immediately took care of our drinks ... a cappuccino for my friend, americano for me. The coffees come with a homemade almond biscotti, what a lovely touch, and it is delicious! For food we split a half order of the french toast and I had the eggs t murphy (eggs benedict) with the cheese grits. Oh and we also had a sampling of the bread/muffin basket so we were destined to float away on a cloud of carbs! The bread basket is complimentary but you have to request it. Everything was delicious and the portions are generous. My only issue was when we asked the lady who brought our food for an extra plate for the french toast (since we were splitting it) she never brought it. Actually, John came by to check on us and ended up getting an extra plate. They were busy and probably understaffed but that was a little ridiculous! Our food was definitely cooled down by the time we were able to eat. Recommendations... make a booking in advance, get a coffee of your choice, ask for the muffin basket, and whatever food you get, select cheese grits as your side! I've been to Murphy's for both brunch and dinner. While the food is lauded as great and amazing, I thought it was really just typical American food. It was great quality and tasted super fresh, but I don't think it is worth it at this price point. There are other great places in Atlanta serving the same menu more or less but at a significantly lower price. I suppose that the alcohol and cocktails are the highlight of the menu, but I ordered trail blazer and it honestly wasn't revolutionary. The service was alright during dinner but it's a bit slower during brunch. The mimosas during brunch were very good though! I only wish the brunch menu had a more classic breakfast. The server was nice enough to take it back and have them redo the order. They came back with medium rare, that's not what I ordered. A must try place here in Atlanta! Parking is a little challenging, but they do offer valet services. The outside is really nice, but the front doors are hard to determine. They are circular and not easily identifiable. Walking in, you get a great view of the bar, and the hostess stand is to the far right. I wish they'd consider moving this closer to the door so guests get a warm, welcoming entrance. The host was very friendly, but having a reservation at 12, to be told the table wasn't clean kind of bummed us out. We had to wait for 15 more minutes. We sat outside on the patio, and it is beautiful yellow, but hot. I hope they'd consider putting AC out there, or fans that blow colder air. We got coffee, and it was very good. Fresh brewed coffee is a great start to brunch. We were served with blueberry muffins and biscuits with a side of butter, blueberry, and strawberry preserves. It was very good! The blueberry muffins are homemade and fresh. I got pancakes, fruit, and cheese grits - it all was very delicious. The pancake batter tasted homemade, and the fruit was very fresh. FINALLY, after so long, I was able to try this place with the bf for a birthday dinner. Overall, my experience here was amazing, from the service we got (thanks, Jessica!) to the fresh food (calamari, swordfish and brisket - OMG that brisket tho) and the atmosphere, all of that combined is what makes Murphy's so special. Visited "Murphy's" with my son for my birthday. I have been to "Murphy's" many times since 1988-89 until the present for special occasions (birthdays, entertaining friends) and the service and food have always been excellent. Today, my "Birthday" was first time that service was lousy, unfavorable and the meal I ordered was unsavory and poorly presented. I had to send the meal back due to poorly being seasoned with excessive salt and the breakdown of the meat, which had been a favorite for me. All my concerns after speaking with staff (waiter) and manager were not addressed appropriately causing for me to consider if I will revisit, what I used to consider one of three favorite restaurants in Atlanta, that i would visit. In addition to this the manager was very unhelpful in the fact that it was my fathers birthday and his meal at the very least should have been comped due to the nature that it was not good. Also the manager was a new guy and nice however it was like talking to the wall so it would seem like the conversation that we had was all for not. Also this is the first time we have heard others give complaints about this place. The up side was the Rib-eye was a good dish along with the appetizers, that is what the saving grace was. What a delightful little spot. As a longtime established heavy hitter in atlanta, it's no secret Murphys is a wonderful establishment. Ve only ever been for brunch but when. Go it's always so easy, and on a hectic Sunday easy is ll I need. I walked in without a Reservation and was told there was a 25 minute wait. that isn't bad as it is but to make things better they were seats at the bar because they have two bars. Major points on the two bars. No one wants to stand and wait. We got coffee and OJ at the bar and one of the tables ready not even 10 minutes later (much faster than anticipated) they transferred a check to the table so we didn't have to close out. It's the little things. You don't have to stand and wait. You can transfer checks. They're quicker than you expect. And the food is amazing. I love their little biscuits with honey butter. It's honestly half the reason I go. I ate Chilaquiles and was not disappointed. The flavors blended very well together and I felt the dish bring me back to life. There's nothing better than a brunch gone well. There's nothing worse than a brunch gone wrong. Murphys will not let you down. When in doubt, go to Murphys. read more

Many describe Murphy's as having the best brunch in Atlanta. Best brunch or most popular place to get brunch? At 1pm on a Sunday, I had to squeeze my way to the host and find out the wait would be 45-50 minutes. Good thing they serve brunch until 4pm on weekends. Since the restaurant is located at the intersection of Virginia and Highland, the heart of Virginia Highland, I used the extra time to walk around the neighborhood. Murphy's has a small bakery and wine bar, covered outdoor patio, and ample seating in the various dining areas inside. It has a casual and fun atmosphere. For parking, you can use their complimentary valet service or parallel park along the residential streets. The menu is pretty straightforward. They serve many common Southern brunch items (pancakes, shrimp and grits, eggs, and baked goods) and also have "frittatas," which are open-faced omelettes. The menu describes the eggs as "cage free." I ordered their special for the day, which was a pork tenderloin over buttermilk biscuits with poached eggs on top. It came with a side, so I chose the cheddar grits. I also sampled their southwest frittata, which consists of pork chorizo, potatoes, onions, peppers, cheese, tortilla strips, and sour cream. In addition, a basket of buttermilk biscuits and pumpkin muffins were served at each table. The bread basket came with a small sealed jar of Knotts Berry Farm strawberry preserves and butter. The special was good. The poached eggs were white and fluffy, the pork was juicy and tender, and the buttermilk biscuits were delicious. The cheddar grits were awesome -- full of flavor. Along with West Egg's grits, they're among favorites so far in Atlanta. The southwest frittata was okay. I'm not a fan of eating tortilla chips for breakfast/brunch. The pumpkin muffins were nice and moist. Overall, the food was pretty good and was served in big portions. The service could have been better. The restaurant was very busy, so it took longer than normal for our server to take our order, get our food out to us, and refill our drinks. Loved my breakfast here! I ordered the Eggs Virginia Highland. Normally when I get an eggs benedict dish I don't get the porched eggs cooked right, but they were cooked perfectly here. I ordered the plate with grits, which I also enjoyed. The pancakes were so delicious! You know it's a good pancake when you don't need the syrup. And we were happy that a half order of the pancake (1) was an option since we ordered main dishes just to try. You can find Murphy's at 997 Virginia Avenue NE, Atlanta, GA 30306 in the heart of Virginia Highland (literally at the corner of Virginia Ave and North Highland Ave NE). Parking is rather limited to side-streets so you may as well valet with the guys across the street - they'll take good care of your car. It's been at least 10 years since I last visited Murphy's, only due to the huge number of restaurants in Atlanta and my desire to visit pretty much all of them. I last lived on North Highland in 1994 and while I lived there and for about a dozen years afterwards, I got to know the local restaurants quite well. I had visited Murphy's a few times and have taken it a bit for granted - I'm very happy that the restaurant is doing well - it seems some restaurants in the area can stand the test of time. Murphy's is the corner building of a row that bends along North Highland with parking along the front - Murphy's faces Virginia Ave more along the back-side of the bend. You'll see bright yellow awnings above a patio and entry-barrier against the weather - otherwise the brick facade is painted and resembles other low-retail along Highland. The interior is very warm and inviting, brick, painted ceiling rafters and wooden table tops. Wines are prominently displayed on several walls (Murphy's is known for its wine tastings); there's votive lighting everywhere to provide a pleasant glow to everything. This is an awesome date-night spot and I can attest that it's worthwhile for brunch. We had reservation and were seated almost immediately (the restaurant was not full on this mid-week evening). The menu is fairly simple (and always has been from what I remember) focusing your attention on seasonal variations and longstanding favorites. This is one of my favorite local menus as I've never been a fan of "the phone book" that you see at some restaurants. I guess the cynic in me thinks that the kitchen is unlikely to be good at everything when a menu is that large, plus I think it makes things harder for a diner when there are too many options. On the front there are Starters, Share Plates, Big Salads, Main Courses, Sides, and a Daily feature. The back has desserts at the top and is mostly covered by a wine-by-the-glass list, with options for a few specialty cocktails and beers. I opted for a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Tropical IPA (which I'm guessing is their answer to the most excellent Creature Comforts Tropicalia). The beer was very good but still not quite the offering from Athens - still a great accompaniment to the Flash Fried Calamari appetizer (apple cider mignonette, cocktail sauce). The peppery-sweet/sour mignonette was an excellent foil to the hot/fried calamari - loved that. We were also give an excellent bread and shared a perfectly-tossed Caesar salad (another pet peeve of mine is when the Caesar is overly-dressed - this one was just right). For dinner we selected the Guinness Braised Brisket - horseradish mashed potatoes, roasted carrots and green beans; and the Gulf Shrimp and Cheese Grits - field peas, soppressata salami, tomatoes, cheddar grits. Both entrees were fairly hearty with good but not huge portions and delicious. The brisket was fork-tender and full-flavored. The grits to me had a bit too much tomato - the acids seemed to overpower the grits quite a bit and the peas were a bit too al dente but I'm sure most would like them a lot. For dessert we went with coffee and the Carrot Cake - walnut carrot cake, cream cheese icing, vanilla pineapple compote. It was solid but I've had better, maybe slightly dry. If it sounds like I'm being picky, well yes I am. I used to eat here quite a bit so I'm probably over-sensitive having not visited in many years so take it with a grain of salt. Finally on the service - once someone came by the table everything was fine but that was one problem. I don't believe the server was aware that the table had been given to her - we could see her straightening up a table across the room. We sat for 10 minutes before someone realized that we needed attention. The second item, and perhaps this is my final pet peeve - the tables next to us had an overly-attentive server that spent a lot of time talking to the couple there (sounded like at least one was a friend) - so we had someone's back to us for most of that 10 minutes - seems like she could have been more aware of what was going on around her and figured out that we needed some service. The ceviche was pretty good too but wouldn't order again. My mom enjoyed the thai chicken salad and I loved the redfish special. There were a few bones in it which is the only reason I'm hesitant to give 5 stars. I swallowed a bone in a filet of redfish. Be aware of that. It probably didn't help either that I had trout just the day before at Empire State South and it tasted so much better ... or maybe they just had better sides. The veggies were nothing special, and b/c the "parsnip whips" looked like mashed potatoes, my brain was thinking mashed potatoes which confused my taste buds b/c it tasted like potatoes infused w/ perfume. Maybe I'm just not a fan of parsnips. My friend got the crabcakes but all I saw was a plate of mostly "matchstick potatoes." I forgot to ask if she liked the dish but she didn't offer an opinion so I assume it was ok. Service wasn't that great either - our server wasn't the warm & friendly type I'm used to getting when I come to Murphy's. He was very curt and made strange remarks that made me & my friend look at each other funny whenever he left our table. Overall 3 stars but keep in mind this is based on one lunch where we ended up with a bad server and maybe the wrong food choices. We have been dining at Murphys for years. This time was different - we were sat outside under a tent even after making reservations. Due to the 90° heat, they had fans blowing in our face. Then there were 5 flys at any given time hovering over our food. The waiter was sweet, but it took him way too long to notice we were unsatisfied and uncomfortable. We raved about their Steak Frites, but this time the meat was disgusting looking (grayish color) and tough (well done after asking for medium). The aioli was over peppered and the fries were over cooked. We asked for some warm bread and they brought us sliced up, stale sourdough. Finally the manager came over and moved us to an indoor/outdoor booth and comped our dessert. Unfortunately it was too late to save our mom's 60th birthday dinner experience, but the comping was nice. May never come back, which is a shame. read more

So, when I lived in the area 14 years ago, Murphy's was my favorite restaurant. I've been twice since I've moved back. Once for dinner and today for lunch and both times it just hasn't been as good. Worth the wait, which can be awhile on the weekends . . . starting with coffee or a mimosa if you're inclined, the menu is a perfect combo of breakfast and lunch foods. The service is great, and they will make dishes with custom requests - I recommend the Eggs San Francisco, but I like my eggs scrambled. The burgers are terrific too, and one of my regular brunch partners loves their smoked salmon and bagel combo. Murphy's is also a good dinner date place, and their wine cellar is terrific. I have been to Murphy's for brunch four times in the past six months. It is a true brunch spot. There is always a wait whenever we get there normally between 12 and 1 on a Sunday. the good news is that the Hostess/Host is always fairly precise (to within 5 minutes) when quoting the wait time. In the interim we tend to grab our coffee. they serve a strong Berkley California coffee that does the trick. The place itself is busy, yes the wait staff is busy, but given that they do have 6 or 7 tables at once I have always found them to be very proficient, accurate and at times funny. The bread basket always has something original and good in it. 90% of the brunch entrees are like $9-13 which for this level of establishment seems like a steal to me. I have had the Pork Chop with Paprika, The standard sausage and eggs, the malt waffle and the crab cake sandwich. Everything has always been superb. We usually get a refill or two of coffee in the dining room and then ask for one to go. It is a Concentrics Restaurant, but feels less corporate then the other chains in that franchise. The Friends of Murphy's Cards, and general genuine feel of the establishment being over 20 years old help lend to this sentiment. I like this place. read more

I'll tell you once I received the invite to this place for a friends birthday and viewed the menu, I wasn't looking forward to coming here. Most times I find that places that are considered "classy casual" are way more hype (read:expensive) than they need to be but I actually ended up being pleased with the food and service that our party received. It has a nice layout, but is not the place to go if you want to be slightly loud. Maybe the bar area is louder than the dining room, but I kept feeling like I needed to lower my voice in the dining room. I viewed the menu beforehand, and wasn't impressed with the $20+ entrees and even less so with the $15+ salads. I understand that its all farm fresh etc, but I'm under the impression that should make it a little cheaper. Our waitress, Sarah, was new and went over the 5 minute spill of the restaurant specials and all the other stuff I tuned out since I had made up my mind before going of what I was going to order. She was super nice and very knowledgeable of the restaurant in the short time she has worked there. I went with the Oysters ($11), which technically is a shared plate item and mashed potatoes ($6) which is a side item and is not sold together as an entree. That was the only thing on the entire menu that appealed to me, and both were fantastic. I received 6 oysters (which makes me wonder how this is a shared plate) and a nice amount of mashed potatoes. Someone else in my party had the Spinach and Sausage meatloaf, she'd been here before and had that dish, and was familiar with it so, that was an easy selection for her and she was pleased with it this time also. Another person had the Roasted Mountain chicken, and I was quite impressed with the size of the chicken breast and she stated that it was flavored very well. Our server had described it as "African" flavored, and neither of us knew what that meant, but the person that had it said that it was like curry flavored, but not really curry tasting. I'm still lost. Another had the brisket which came with mashed potatoes and a vegetable mixture, she'd eaten it before I got done with my six oysters, so I have to give that a plus based on her. Since it was two people in our party birthday, (mines and my friends) we asked about birthday desserts and was told that we could choose two, which we did. There was no mention at that time that it wasn't complimentary, so I was surprised to see it at half price on my tab. I had the grilled pound cake and was not only mesmerize at how pretty it was displayed, but it was also VERY tasty. The amount of peaches I received on the dessert allowed me to give each person in our party at least 2-3 to taste. The other birthday person had the Mocha cake. It also was displayed beautifully, but was super rich in taste. Its like death by chocolate to the tenth power. The winner of the evening was the cucumber martinis ($15), which are not on the menu, but Sarah asked the bartender to make me one and she did, and it was better than any other I've had this summer, so I suggested to her that she tells those in charge to put that on the menu. The only complaint I have, was I asked for extra cucumbers, and she came back and said the bartender said she was out of cucumbers, which is probably unlikely since they have a drink on the menu that includes cucumbers (Green Machine) and when I initially asked about a cucumber flavored drink, both the waitress at the bar and Sarah suggested that particular drink to me, so I doubt they all of sudden ran out of cucumbers after two cucumber martinis. I would think if someone spent $30 on two drinks, they should be able to have all the cucumber garnish they like from a place that is "local farm supplied". I wouldn't make plans to go back, but would consider it if someone invite me. read more
