Muramoto is a mediocre sushi restaurant in Madison. I was surprised by this because the reviews are good, but my friends and I were disappointed. I started my meal out with a drink - pineapple agave shochu cocktail. It tasted like a vodka lemonade. Not even a tiny taste of pineapple there. The server was kind and accommodating. The atmosphere is nice (dim, good date night vibes). The food was the biggest issue. We each got the chef's choice maki combo that comes with three rolls of sushi. You don't get to pick what comes to you but I like all sushi so that was fine with me. The sushi was disappointing because it didn't seem/taste fresh. It did not taste like good quality fish either. The fish was kind of mushy and so was the rice. Also there was so much rice in each roll, more than necessary for sure. The spicy shrimp tasted like canned tuna, and the crab in each roll was dry. I appreciate that they use actual crab instead of crab stick/imitation crab, but with how dry and pasty their crab is, I would've preferred imitation. The prices aren't super cheap, but unfortunately the impression I got from the food I'd that the food quality and taste is cheap. Also, the rolls were uneven in their cutting so some pieces were small and some were so big you couldn't even eat it in one bite. Generally disappointing visit to this place. Service and ambience were top notch. You can come for any occasion such as a drop in or a fancy night out in town. Staffs were always nice and friendly whenever I arrive. The sushi were great. All the house specials and traditional rolls were brimmed with flavors. Each combo had a unique taste without any tasting the same. But outside of the sushi, most of the food were just ok. I've been to Muramoto a couple of times with my sushi loving daughter. This last time they were busy as always yet we were able to get in within 20 minutes. They said the wait would be 35min and would text when our order was ready, but we didn't receive a text and just walked into the store to pick up our order instead- no biggie! Awful sushi rice, sad rolls, for 40% more cost We went here when they first opened and the rolls were just sad and haven't been back since...till now. The good: the calamari is very fresh and delicious, not your run of mill premade stuff. The sauce is over powering and takes away the freshness of the calamari. The fish seems to be good quality but... The bad: The sushi rice is absolutely awful, as in every Asian kids know how to make better rice. The rice was cooked with too much water, that it's too soft and wet, and not enough vinegar. Their fish is also at higher temperature than other places that in combination the rolls are mushy. And because the rice lacks the right texture, the rolls must be very sticky and difficult to cut. Look at the first picture, I've seen better cut grocery store sushi. Conclusion: if you have to get sushi get the Nigiri or sashimi. The rice ratio is still too high in Nigiri but that can be adjusted by the diner. And frankly most can't tell what's good sushi anyway as long as it's a fancy looking roll smeared with mayo and sauces. read more

We did takeout here and making the drive downtown wasn't really worth it. We ordered a few sushi rolls: veggie tempura, scallop roll, and two other rolls - one being a specialty roll that I can't quite recall. They were prompt in service. What let me down was the display of the sushi-not all pieces were cut evenly and they also weren't wrapped tightly. Taste-wise: the veggie tempura needed more batter and the veggies almost had the raw consistency so it needed a longer cook time. Amongst the four rolls we got, the scallop roll tasted the best. I'd go ahead and order the shrimp tempura appetizer again. Flavorful. They suspended online ordering until farther notice, so you have to call in to place a pickup order, the old school way. Their menu is on their website. The ones you find on google or Yelp are not updated. The wait time was 45 minutes on a Monday around 5:30pm. The food was done fast and right on time. We started eating before taking pics lol :) but you can get an idea of what it looked like before the car ride and the first bites. Went here on a Friday night for Sustainable Seafood Week. They were pretty busy, but I got seated right away at the sushi making station. It was kind of fun to watch the trays being made as I waited for my food. I ordered the special for the week of cured wild Alaskan Coho salmon with wasabi creme fraiche, salmon roe, micro greens, and naan bread, as well as an Alaska roll in case I want a huge fan of the entree choice. I was a big fan of both, although I could have done with a little less creme fraiche on the salmon, but that's just a taste preference. Being a big fan of presentation, I was also very impressed by how quickly the dishes were coming out, looking very elegant and colorful. Muramoto is always a solid choice for sushi, but I wouldn't forget the other dishes they have either. For example, the crab croquettes are amazing. They come out nice and hot. You bite into a ball with a nice crunch and then are filled with the soft, gooey crab-mix. The accompanying tonkatsu sauce and seaweed aioli is a really nice pairing adding some acidity and flavor. Another staple appetizer is the black cod (fish so soft and flaky!) or the calamari. For sushi, I like a little surprise and get the Maki Combo which is a chef's choice of a regular roll, an inside-out roll, and a special roll. Plenty to share and what's nice is that you can let your server know of any special requests for the chef. Service is always friendly and attentive and lots of parking around the area. Giving Muramoto 5 stars honestly because that's what my parents said this place deserves, and this is their favorite Asian place to eat at in Madison when they're visiting! They have some great lunch specials for the value, and everything on the menu comes in pretty satisfying portions. Our order has to include the tempura shrimp and Muramoto definitely doesn't skimp on the size of shrimps or the spicy sauce. We also usually get the hanger steak lunch special and it's cooked perfectly every time although they could work on getting the potatoes it sits on to be crispier and more flavorful. For the rolls, every one I've had here has tasted pretty fresh, but I'd love more spicy roll options. Service is sometimes hit-or-miss, nothing outrageous but the staff could be a bit more attentive. The other people in my group ordered two large plates and there was no repeating sushi! We got to try so many kinds of fish! Muramoto is my wife and I's favorite restaurant in Madison. I found this restaurant first and really liked trying the Maki combo (Chef's choice) to explore the menu and while doing so got to know the incredible chefs and staff there. My wife did not like sushi at the time, but she noticed how much I loved going and started joining me. My wife now loves sushi and Muramoto is our favorite date spot. We fully recommend getting Maki combos and sharing. They also have great drinks like The Bicycle Thief and the best deserts like black sesame ice cream and the nico crème brûlée. Our favorite appetizers are the Asian Slaw and Beef short ribs. All of the sushi is incredible. The chefs are very friendly and skilled at making the best sushi in town in our opinion. Just wrapped up with dinner at Sushi Muramoto and I must say, it was quite a fulfilling meal. Although, I've been spoiled with better sushi elsewhere, the quality of the food here is very good and I was quite content. It was a bit of walk hunting through the Hillsdale Shopping Center trying to locate this place. It's not my first time here but it's been a while since I've last came by. When we finally found the place after checking the map, and walking further, we almost missed the right side entrance (the left door is just for show - or I suppose it's an "emergency" exit). We ordered two appetizers: edamame and steamed mussels. Both were great choices and complemented each other well. The mussels was on the salty end but nonetheless still delicious. For our entree, we shared a maki combo (3 different chef choice rolls - which was all a pleasant surprise) and fresh eel (two pieces). All of which was amazing in its own right. Asked for 2 mai tai's and the server came back and said the bartender didn't have all the ingredients. Sorry Muramoto... I can't let that one slide. If you have a full bar, you have the parts to make a mai tai. This screams the bartender either didn't know how to make one or didn't want to. Either way, you get one less star for that. In my opinion, Muramoto is the most authentic sushi restaurant in the area. With that said, some of the items are quite puzzling (I said sushi!). Ordering the shrimp tempura, I was picturing elongated shrimp in flaky tempura batter, lightly stacked and served with a side of dashi-based, broth-y, tempura sauce. Instead, what I got was a may-lover's interpretation of shrimp tempura. While I appreciated the lump shrimp that came in a square bowl, it was drenched in "spicy" mayo. Enough so, that there was residual mayo remaining in the bowl afterwards. The texture and flavor more resembled Walnut Shrimp from a Chinese take-out joint, rather than a cherished cuisine from Japan. Ok guys I'm totally in love with this place, it's love at first visit. I tried the pomegranate martini my friend was having, which was great, but I absolutely adored the lychee martini. They're gorgeous drinks. We ordered the Tarantula roll sushi - deliciously amazing. We ordered the seaweed salad - again this was so amazing. I ordered the salmon it was placed on vegetables and broth. Salmon was cooked with the skin that was crisped perfectly, I tried a little piece and was tempted to eat the skin as a chip but restrained myself. My friend ordered the scallops, I had never had such delicious scallops. They were served over mashed potatoes in a light but home feeling gravy. Our server was wonderful we never had to ask for more water we always had water in our glasses. Plating was nice. Today, we arrived at around 1:00 (so we ordered from the lunch menu) and although there was a 5-10 minute wait, it was worth it. My companions and I ordered the appetizer shrimp tempura ($9) to share. The shrimp was crispy, sauce was excellent and the asparagus was seasoned just right. I ordered the Miso Black Cod ($12) and it was divine. The fish was tender and seasoned extremely well. The sautéed vegetables were crisp and delicious. My friends ordered the Hanger Beef Steak ($12) which he throughly enjoyed and my other friend ordered the fried tofu which she also said was very tasty. After dropping a phone off at the Apple store for a battery change (yes, it tales 2.5 hours), we found ourselves with 2.5 hours to kill with rumbling bellies. There shrimp was mixed with traditional onion, peppers and sprouts with a side of rice and a strange salad topped with corn flakes. The Dragon roll was off the special roll menu, it was a bit pricey for what we got, but it was a pretty tasty roll- filled with Shrimp Tempura, avocado, and cream cheese. It was topped with an eel type sauce and a spicy mayo with black fish roe. It wasn't my favorite roll, but it was worth trying. While Sushi Mutamoto isn't my favorite sushi joint in town, but it's a solid joint that does not disappoint! My husband called about 20 minutes later to try to make a reservation, which they would not take, said they don't do, but said they were still seating and open normal hours. Less than 15 minutes later, around 7:35pm, we showed up and they said they were no longer seating, that they were "out of fish" and not taking any more people for the evening.
