I was happily surprised with Ruyi's menu offerings and food overall. It is a casual dining location with ordering at the counter, so taking that into account, I thought it was solid. I appreciated that they had a clear window so you could see them making the handpulled noodles and the prices were fair, especially for state street. We got the braised beef noodle which was wonderful. Rich broth, very tender meat, which could have had thicker pieces, but I was pretty impressed with the flavor of the soup. It might have been that it was a particularly cold day and it just hit, but it worked. The pan fried dumplings were okay. The dough was a little thick and there wasn't any soup in them. It is a tiny but charming establishment. My friends and I walked in and were instantly hit by amazing smells and a good vibe. It had spice from the chili oil and the tingling from the peppercorn but not much besides that. The beef was shaved pretty thin and not any fat to and the portion was quite small. Should have maybe done the beef tendon instead. The pickled cucumbers for me were the highlight. Had great flavor, salty, sweet and a little crunch to it. Also ordered the Xiao long bao. The wrapper had nice texture to it and pork flavor was strong and meat was moist. There was not much soup inside and was more like a dumpling in that aspect but the skin was soft and it had good flavor. Overall it was tasty. Inside it is a little rundown and our table had one leg that was shorter than the other so it rocked back and forth. The table tops were also a little sticky. We came in for an early dinner on a weekday and there were still plenty of seats there. Plenty of people were also getting take out. The staff up front was quick and friendly. We got the hand pulled noodle soups of roasted duck and beef, scallion pancake and bbq pork buns. The soup was flavorful and the noodles were awesome. -1 star because the roasted duck in the bowl was from the duck leg so there were a lot of bones, it was hard to eat. It's also a no frills restaurant, with inside having some decorations. The bathroom isn't the cleanest and you order up front and wait inside. Beef noodle soup... in Wisconsin?! We ended up pit-stopping in Madison on the way back to Chicago from Minneapolis. I have to say that we did not expect to stumble on Ruyi and some fresh noodles, but boy oh boy do I have to say that I'm glad we did. The spot is pretty casual with plenty of order going out for takeout. When we visited there were still some covid indoor dining restrictions in place so we had to wait a bit for a table to open up. Scallion pancake - 3 stars - the pancake was really thin and greasy. The scallion pancake here is equivalent to a thin crust versus regular. The thinness made it crispy, but definitely not my preference. Xiao Long Baos - 3 stars - smaller in size, outside layer was a little thick and no soup was present.
