It seems to me that they must have changed management. My wife and I have been eating at China Wok for more than 23 years. We aet there 2-3 times a month. Last week we ordered a few things. We ordered Cashew shrimp in white sauce, general tso and soup. We received cashew shrimp in a brown sauce, the general tso combo platter which comes with pork fried rice. We had the order delivered. When we received the order, the combo platter was mostly rice with egg in it and no pork, the chicken was a few pieces on top, almost no sauce and not spice to it. The cashew shrimp was in a brown sauce. We called about the cashew shrimp. They said they will mark it down and we would get a fee one next time we ordered. I decided to stop there 2 days later and nobody knew what we were talking about. They eventualy gave me a replacement order of the cashew shrimp. When I told them about the General TSO combo plater, they said there must have been a mix up with my order. Today I stopped by and ordered the General TSO combo Platter, crab Rangoon and some rice soup. The General TSO was on a bed of rice like previously, it didn't have any spice to it and since the chicken was on a bed of rice there wasn't many pieces of chicken on the order. The soup was cold and my wife said it didn't have much flavor. We each ate a crab rangoon and threw the rest in the trash. It just was not good. The egg rolls are no longer the same size as before either. They are only at best 2/3 the size they used to be. We gave them a second chance, I guess this is how they are conducting their business now. It used to be the best Chinese in Madison. I don't think we are going to eat there again. I will be looking for another restaurant to buy our Chinese food from. read more

I am visiting Madison, WI for an 8-day stay, and am staying at the new Hotel Indigo on East Washington Ave. Yesterday (Sept. 25), as lunchtime neared, I started craving Chinese food, and, after having done a bit of research online on the best Chinese restaurants in Madison, I went online and ordered a lunchtime meal from this restaurant for delivery to me at my hotel. Among other items (I am a big believer in ordering lots of Chinese food so that I can put leftovers in the fridge) that I ordered, I ordered, if my memory serves me correctly, the following (a partial list follows): fried dumplings, extra white rice, shrimp egg foo yung, a big bunch of egg rolls, and fried rice. When I placed and paid for the delivery order online, the delivery website stated, quite reasonably, particularly because it was lunchtime on a weekday, that the estimated delivery time would likely be about 55 to 65 minutes from the time I placed the order. I was quite pleasantly surprised when the hotel's front desk called me only 26 minutes later to tell me that the driver from China Wok had already arrived bearing my bag of food! Amazing! (Of course, I went downstairs immediately, gave the driver a tip, and grabbed my bag of food!) Well, all of the food turned out to be great, and much as I had planned, I ended the meal with a ton of leftovers to put in the fridge in my room. In fact, I ate some of those leftovers for my lunchtime meal today! Best of all, I still have sufficient leftovers in the fridge for one more meal (likely tomorrow's lunch...!). All of the food that I ordered turned out to be of very high quality, was very tasty, and also tasted very fresh. I will, of course, be placing more hotel delivery orders from China Wok during the remainder of my stay here in Madison! This is a great Chinese restaurant! Finally, I must admit that I am still stunned that their driver managed to deliver my meal only 26 minutes after I had placed the order online, despite the fact that I had placed the order at lunchtime on a weekday! read more

Well, you don't have to worry about this at China Wok. What you get as your meal looks even better than the pictures above their counter. I've dined at this carry out Chinese location numerous times over the past 2 years. My office is only a mile or so away and it makes for a quick meal. I must say, I feel like something has changed in the past year. When I used to go, I felt like no matter what I ordered, it all looked/tasted the same. (ie sauce, color, vegetables, etc) But for the past year or so, my coworker and I marvel at how great the food looks when it comes from the kitchen. We primarily dine in. We're practically giving each other high-fives, because we feel like we just scored big. And the flavor is just as good as it looks. I just ate at another carryout Chinese location and the quality of food reminded me how great China Wok is, so I jumped out to right this review. I regularly get Kung Pao Chicken or Mongolian Beef. My coworker exclusively gets General Tso's Chicken (this thing always looks amazing!) Value is always great...we can get both of our lunches, i usually add an egg roll (75 cents) and he usually gets a soda and it costs us around $12 for both of us. Quantity of food is also great. Overall this place wasn't anything amazing. The food was just alright. The Lunch specials are very reasonably priced so that is nice. Food is also done very fast. I ordered the Hot & Spicy Chicken lunch special and it was alright. For supposedly being "hot" it was not to me. I do always try and keep in mind though that I prefer things spicier than the average person does. There were a lot of onions in the dish and the vegetable were still a little to raw for me. Standard Americanized Chinese food, nearly the same menu as most other places. Convenient location between a few busy streets when you've just got a craving. Historically the hot and sour soup, as well as the egg drop soups are hot, soothing, and loaded with ingredients. Recently, the hot and sour soup was so gelatinous that parts of the what-would-be-liquid stood up on its own. So disturbing to imagine what it does to the body. Egg rolls and noodle dishes are more consistent. Though there are a couple of small tables inside the door, this is definitely a carry out joint for me. I call ahead to avoid standing in the very small entryway against the people in the tables. Really, a place like this doesn't need much more so it's fine. Well, the food was alright - didn't wow me and my friend, but we didn't complain about it either. I liked the fact that they serve not overly greasy chinese. We ordered pork chop suey, mixed vegetable, and beef with snow peas. All of them tasted good without making my guts feel nauseous. One thing my friend and I didn't know - so in Midwest (or in Madison only?) "chow mein" is not a noodle dish .... . So make sure to order "Lo mein" if you want that noodle dish. When I just want some moderately priced food that will get here fast, fill my belly with warm and comforting Asiatic foodstuffs, this is who I turn to. I can't speak for its authenticity or service, but I can speak for how often I find myself hungry, cold, and ordering from China Wok's online delivery system. I don't generally care for Sweet & Sour anything. That's not real food! Have you seen that toxic-waste colored, gelatinous red sauce? That can't be good for you. But on a friend's recommendation, I tried it from China Wok. It's delicious. Somehow the battered and fried chicken had not become soggy during delivery, and I found it was insanely addictive over pork fried rice. (I like their fried rice- not too greasy. But it seems to turn bitter when you re-heat it the next day.) Decent dumplings, and my BF seems to enjoy the spare ribs, since those are the only two things he ever orders from there. The sauce that comes with those dumplings is pretty awesome I must say. I also enjoy the crab rangoons, though they are the very creamy kind with almost no actual crab meat. Ask me if I care. Because I don't. Really, I've probably had 75% of the menu by now, and nothing really sticks out as "not good." Though once we tried the Teriyaki Chicken and found it to be pretty dry. Who knows if that is how it usually is, since we only tried it once. What business did we have ordering Japanese food from a Chinese place anyway? They are reliable, fairly priced, good size portions, hot when it arrives, completely non-threatening Chinese. So far the best Chinese delivery we've had here in Madison. Their food is flavorful, fresh, and not super-greasy. They also have an online menu to order from, which is amazing! It makes life simple, and I don't have to worry that I mispronounce something or said the wrong thing entirely. The only complaint I had is that while our food was steamy hot, the crab rangoons weren't. They were actually a little on the cool side. Do not eat here. Partner has gotten food poisoning twice from this location and I have once. Yesterday, she had the shrimp with lobster sauce, pork fried rice and an egg roll. I live very nearby this restaurant, and when I moved into my apartment, I was so excited to have a Chinese place next door. I had high hopes, and they simply couldn't have fallen farther. I have ordered take out from here twice (well, they only have 1 table anyway), and it wins the award for worst Chinese food EVER. I had tofu mixed vegetables, which is my go-to. No. just no. The vegetables were not just mediocre quality, but clearly past their prime. I'm talking soggy, wilted, and literally, barely even edible. It was so bad, I couldn't even tolerate eating the rest of my meal. Again, in an attempt to force myself to like China Wok, I ordered from here a second, and final time, 2 weeks after. The food was still of poor quality.I had hoped it was an isolated incident, but the facts suggest otherwise. I am truly shocked there are so many positive reviews here. In conclusion, poor quality food, questionable sanitation, very very limited seating. Change in review! The food showed up late but I guess if you want the best you have to plan accordingly. The vegetables were super fresh and perfectly stir fried. The cashews actually had a "nut" taste with still some crunch, and the spicing was superb. Rice was cooked perfectly. The meat (chicken) in both dishes was cooked to perfection bringing the whole meal to an amazing completion with just the right amount of authentic heat. Truly a gem of Chinese take-outs. I'm not sure about the other Yelper reviews but suggest you give this place a chance. As someone who's lived in China, eaten Chinese take out from SF to OKC to NYC- it's worth the inexpensive prices! I had a very frustrating experience with this restaurant. I have ordered from this restaurant for 13 years. I enjoyed supporting a local business. In the earlier days, the food was always hot and would arrive quickly. In the last year, it has slowed down, and mistakes are occasionally made. However, because they are close and I've supported them for so long, I still continue to order from them periodically. Tonight, however, was a different experience. I ordered food online and the computer inserted the wrong address (but correct name and phone number). When I called an hour later, they said they already delivered the food. I realized it was to the wrong address when I looked at the online receipt. They told me it was my fault and they were unwilling to remake the order without me paying again. The incorrect address it was delivered to was a place of business. I called this business and asked what happened. They said the food was delivered there and was eaten - they told the driver it wasn't theirs, but the driver left the food there anyway. He never called me, even though he had my correct name and phone number. When I relayed this information to the restaurant, he said sarcastically "how do you know this? Do you work there now?" Shocked by this response, I said, "no, I called them, and they told me that they told the driver the food wasn't theirs." His response was, "Well it's your mistake". He was unwilling to do anything to help me, even though I had already paid for the food and given a 20% tip (over $90.00 total). I have never been treated like this by a business before. Even though this was half my fault for not catching the wrong address, they were unwilling to accept responsibility for their part in the mistake and were unwilling to remake the food (or even reimburse the tip) without me paying all over again. Then saw him put broccoli in another and back in. I am gueas the chicken was in there too. Then they put in one container and off I went. Rice had no taste and I had to salt. Chicken was Not cooked well at all either. Definitely tastes as if entire thing was microwaved. The cook didnt use the wok at all!.
