The matcha crème brûlée was rich and perfectly balanced, and the lychee sorbet was super refreshing with real lychee pieces inside -- really high quality. Definitely recommend trying dessert here. This place used to be tasty and fun. I don't know if it's a change in ownership or what, but I can no longer abide the vibe and pace. I've tried it out a few times since they (seemingly) transitioned and today solidified that it's no longer worth going to. Today's lunch was served slowly, with poor timing from the kitchen, and little interest from waitstaff. I finished my entree before my husband's even came to the table. There were only 3 other diners in the restaurant. There appeared to be at least 4 servers and 4 cooks working. The waitstaff sat in the bar folding napkins and talking. Update #2: I'm a die hard Muramoto fan and it's thanks to Kevin, our absolute favorite server for the past year. We have been coming to Muramoto for lunch almost every week for the past year and we order very similar things each time. We absolutely love the slaw and I highly recommend it as an appetizer. Muramoto's Godzilla Roll is the best I've ever had and I order it every single week. They do classic rolls like Alaskan and Boston incredibly well and the service is fast. We have a few servers we enjoy, but nobody beats Kevin, our man, the MVP, the best server in Madison, no questions asked. Kevin is kind, intelligent, fast with the food, great with recommendations, excellent with alcohol additions -- he makes our Muramoto experience fantastic and we love his vibe and his customer-friendship care for his tables. Otherise, my best friend loves the calamari, but it sometimes tastes a bit overcooked and there are empty crispies that don't have any meat inside.My only other complaint is sometimes the shrimp roll is too salty, but it's supposed to be salty and I'm not a big salty food gal. Came in the other day to celebrate my friend's birthday. They mentioned they do not usually do anything for birthdays but our server was kind enough to surprise us with some origami and a scoop of lychee sorbet which was such a thoughtful gesture and really made our night. Solid spot serving up good food at a reasonable price! If you're a sushi fan, Muramoto will definitely scratch your itch. The only drawback, so to speak, is it is really cramped on the inside. A table for 2 and we were seated so close to the tables next to us that even in hushed tones we could clearly hear everyone's conversation, not really ideal if you're looking for a night out and almost forced to eavesdrop. The other drawback (hopefully just a one time issue) is that we went on a Saturday night, ordered the negitoro and they were out. I have been here multiple times with friends and loved it. The staff is always super friendly, the atmosphere is good, and the food is great. In particular, my friend and I both LOVED the shrimp tempura when we tried it. Recently, I went here with a friend and tried a bite of her miso black cod, and it was delicious. Shortly after, I took my mom here for the first time and suggested we share the cod and it tasted SO FISHY to the point of being pretty unappetizing. They may have just been having an off day, but I was disappointed that that was my mom's first experience here. I will say their rolls fall apart on pick up (Fin Sushi does a way better job at symmetry and polished-ness) but still love Muramoto for the more gourmet options and smooth rice (albeit vv high rice ratio) Maki combo chef's choice did not disappoint today with a surprise Tarantula (my fav!), Seabass and salmon-avocado inside out roll. And to match Muramoto has a stunning interior. Dark and wood elements, it feels very peaceful and upscale. They offer a variety of nigiri, regular, and specialty rolls - all pretty standard pricing. But the real winner? Their Sushi Combos. These are chef's choice of the categories, with a few different combo options. We went for the Maki Combo: 3 rolls - 1 regular, 1 inside-out, and 1 special roll (all chef's choice) for $25. That's a heck of a deal considering some specialty rolls are $16! We ended up getting the Rainbow Roll as our specialty roll, which had a ton of fresh fish and would have been our choice anyway. We ended up adding the dragon roll as well which was delicious and saucy. Unfortunately, I feel it is time to finally update my review and downgrade my rating. The sushi continues to accumulate more and more rice to each roll, putting in on par with some of the cheaper, to-go sushi joints in Madison. This is a shame, because Muramoto is supposed to be one of the high-end, fancier places for sushi in the city. And once they really were. But with all of the rice in your mouth, you'd probably never know. There are other sushi options in Madison that I've reviewed that aren't as fancy per se, but they're just as good and they give you more fish to rice. Sadly I'll have to be heading to these places instead. Negi-toro! translates to joy in my heart. Nothing is better than fatty tuna and at Muramoto, it slaps. Super reliable and delicious sushi. I've been here countless times, and it's always super clean, great vibes, awesome service. They were playing reggaeton the last time we went, so slay. We saw many patrons inside on a weekday night and decided to try out for lunch. First of all, there's a free garage parking which it's wonderful! The restaurant takes on a minimalist approach which I love. No reservation is needed for only party of 2. We were seated almost immediately at lunch. The tables are very very close to each other, like 1 foot in width. I promise your behind will hit the other table if you're curvy. I'm not curvy and already had a hard time in getting in and out. The chairs/bench aren't comfortable at all. Scan menu via QR code which can be convenient. However, its menu is long and I dislike scrolling up and down too many times. It's also written on the wall if you can read the menu from sitting all the way at the corner. One of my most favorite dishes at Nobu is miso black cod. I know this isn't Nobu but it's hard to mess up black cod. It was buttery but a tad too salty for my preference. The miso soup was just room temperature. Ordered the maki combo which the chef pick three rolls. I ended up having the Godzilla, escolar and scallop. You can tell them what you don't eat or dislike. The sushi rice are too mushy. As I was chewing on my escolar roll, I was dreaming about my trip to Japan in 2023 where I will certainly get high quality sashimi/sushi. read more

Wow Wow Wow!!! This place is located in a very cute area that has many places to eat, movie theater across the street and mall. I took one of my usual weekend round trips through WI and searched for a place to have good sushi and this places was near by. We didn't have a reservation but we were able to get seated right away on a Friday. We asked our server what she recommends and she said if we aren't picky eaters doing the combo is a great option as the chef will pick a selection of rolls for you to have. We had to ask of the price was correct as it was $25 and we thought there was no way that could be the price and she said it was correct. The only catch is that the chef gets to choose what you get, but as I am not a picky eater I thought this would be the best option for us. Let me say my favorite roll was the Godzilla and wow the other rolls were really good ! Quality rolls for sure. Now let me tell you about the star of the meal for me. It was the MATCHA MULE!!!!. First of I've never seen a matcha drink in a cocktail form and this one was simply delicious ! It hit every note that was described. I loved the taste of lime and you get a soft hint of the matcha at the end. This was such a refreshing drink and it was served in a cold mug which made the drink even more delicious. I really wish this place was in MN because this would become my go to spot for sushi. The ambiance is moody and great service. Party of six so we were able to reserve the back room. We started with Asian slaw, miso soup, tempura shrimp. Calamari and edamame. Excellent choices. We devoured them all. Next came the sushi which was shared by four in the party. Ecuador roll, smoked salmon roll, ugragi roll and tarantula roll. It came out on a platter nicely arranged. It was very good. Two of the party weren't sushi fans and ordered Yakiniku beef short rib. The big pieces of beef were very tough and hard to eat with chopsticks. I don't recommend this dish. The slow down and lychee martini cocktails were worth going back for. Wife and I came in for weekend dinner. We were seated immediately even though they were fairly busy. The menu can be found by QR code but is also conveniently written in chalk on the wall behind the sushi bar. For appetizers we had edamame and the "asian slaw". I was impressed by the latter: very thinly sliced cabbage dressed with a mild sauce that tasted of first of sesame, the more subtly of ginger and citrus, and topped with nori and crunchy won ton bits. For our main dishes we got a few rolls (avocado, cucumber, spicy tuna), nori, and vegetable tempura, which was al great and fresh. I also ordered escarole nigiri. I was very impreshed with the freshness, it was perfectly buttery and tender without being mushy. My only knock against them may be that they did not accomodate vegetarian requests very well; my wife's avocado roll had salmon pieces stuck to it, and the vegetarian dishes were served on the same plates as the fish despite our request upon ordering that they be separated. Our food ran about $40 and we were both full and happy. There aren't a lot of places in the midwest where I am impressed with the quality of the fish, but this is one of them. As some mention, the sushi rice is mushy and doesn't hold together well. The cuts of fish were cut very sloppy and had a terrible appearance to start. Multiple cuts still had skin on which I am personally not a fan of when I'm eating nigiri. The fish was not very fresh, but I've had worse. The one big one issue I had as far as the fish goes, was that the escolar, which should be soft and buttery, was chewy and tough. The venue itself was clean and the atmosphere is very casual (loud conversations and lots of energy). The pork katsu I ordered was tasty, but was pretty average considering the price. The katsu sauce was a bit too salty for me. The tempura roll was also pretty standard. It was good but nothing stood out to me as there are many other sushi spots in Madison.
