Would probably not get the crab Rangoon or shrimp tempura special roll (too sweet) next time. The yakisoba leans heavy into Chinese-American cuisine (sweet + savory) which I enjoyed. My son turned 7, and he really wanted Sushi. So, I did a quick search for Sushi places between our appointment location and the Hotel we booked for a night of birthday fun. Sushi Love popped up on that search and the pictures looked yummy. Located in the old Granite City restaurant space at West Towne, so a nice ambiance. This place is an all you can eat, for 1 price based on age, with some caveats for sashimi and nigiri at an additional 50c PER PIECE along with additional pricing of 50c-$1 (per roll) for sushi roll modifications as well as additional pricing for beverages. However, luck would have it, we arrived about 2:15 and happy hour is 2-4pm. So all beverages were 1/2 off (yes, including soda). Since it was my son's birthday, his meal was 1/2 off as well. They also had a couple of more rules to keep track of. No to go boxes, and if you can't eat what you have ordered, you will also be charged for wasting food. For appetizer, I ordered something called Cheesy shrimp. Which is a Nigiri style sushi, shrimp over a ball of rice, topped with a sauce and some cheese. Now, this is what threw me, I ordered this as an appetizer, there were 2 of us, and we recieved 1 piece. So, I cut it in half for me and my son. If you look at the carryout menu, this is offered as a 3pc appetizer, not 1pc. For our main meal, to share - I ordered 1 mango avocado roll, 1 salmon avocado roll, and 1 Go Packer (sweet potato avocado roll). 18pc total. 9 pieces each. For dessert, my son ordered Fried Oreos. Our bill, after birthday discount, happy hour discount on beverages came to 18.99 4.99 (regular 9.99) 1.25 (regular 2.50) 3.5 (regular 7) = $28.73 (regular price would have been $37.48) plus tip. So, in comparison the local Sushi restaurant we usually go to closer to my home, the prices align WITH the discounted pricing. My point - I do not believe this place is worth the cost if I had not had all the discounts applied. We had lunch here today and honestly -- we loved it! The way it works: it's $18 per person for all-you-can-eat (alcohol is extra), but if you waste food, they charge you -- totally fair. We ordered 3 Philadelphia rolls, a dragon roll, shrimp tempura, rainbow roll, 3 miso soups, and finished with ice cream for dessert. Total for two people came out to $40 before tip -- and we were stuffed! Everything was super fresh and tasted amazing. The quality of the ingredients really stood out. Service? Absolutely incredible. I've been to Sake and had heard about Sushi Lover so I made an executive decision for our group to come here. Understandably others had reservations about going to a place called sushi lover that's also at the mall. Not to worry! The individual sushi pieces are on the small side so you can try plenty. In fact, pretty much everything is small so you don't really need to worry about over ordering unless you get 10 things at a time. They do charge you for anything left over. Dishes come out pretty quickly. The tuna texture on the "regular" sushi was a bit unusual, not quite sure how to describe it, but it was still good. I didn't try any of the special rolls because I am not a cucumber or avocado fan. Shrimp tempura is a but different than what you typically see, maybe a different kind of shrimp? Saba mackerel is one of my favorites and they did a good job with it. The rice is firm and you can taste the vinegar, as you should. The egg was a bit too spongy. Overall, great selection and although some might want larger portions, it is all you can eat so just keep ordering. I'd give them the nod over Sake. There are some dessert options as well! read more

Recently I tried and I was disappointed. I enjoyed the miso soup, teriyaki steak, and shrimp tempura. What I did not enjoy was the shrimp fried rice (the shrimp was not deveined), the hibachi steak was too tough, and the shrimp roll just was not good. The price is very reasonable for lunch but the service was not great, our waitress forgot us for a while and I ended up seeing a friend who waited almost 20 minutes for the waitress to even come to her table. I took my 2 kids (8 & 11) for lunch on a Saturday. We arrived at 1 PM and were seated within 5 minutes. Things went as usual, with a server taking an order, which was delivered within 10 minutes. It took us about 3 minutes to finish the four shrimp dumplings and 8 tiny slices of Teriyaki steak on our table. We waited another 10 minutes to order our next round, which was delivered 10 minutes later. It took a few minutes to eat that, and another 10 minutes to be able to order again. This time it was 12 pieces of sushi. It went on like that for another couple rounds until we'd had our fill. The food was fine, except the Teriyaki steak was missing everything but the steak. None of the vegetables listed on the menu description were included. The service was serviceable. They don't hustle, and why would they? The all-you-can-eat model relies on the diner to get full as they sit waiting , thus taking less advantage of the business model. The real shocker came when the server dropped our bill. Despite the website listing the lunch prices as: Adults $18.99 and Kids (7-11 yrs) $9.99, they charged me $29.99 and $15.99 for each kid. That's an additional $23 above the advertised price for lunch. When I asked the server about the discrepancy, she said, "Well, we don't offer lunch on the weekends." It was 1 PM! Better than your average Sushi Buffet. Because, it's not a buffet, even if it is one price. Sushi Lover is an AYCE Asian restaurant, with Sushi, noodle dishes and rice dishes. They have a full bar. The inside is nice, in a kind of generic Asian place. Service, very nice. Wait staff was new (first day) but performed very well. Checked in on us, kept our plates full. You check in and our seated, and menus are delivered. You place your order and staff gets your food. We stuck with the Sushi, and it was fine. Checked out Sushi Lover on a weekday for lunch. It was pretty busy, which is always good to see. My partner and I ordered both hot food and sushi rolls right away. The hot food arrived super quick...beef hibachi and shrimp fried rice. The beef was tender and came with some nice veggies. We actually ordered another one because the serving is truly meant for only one diner. The shrimp fried rice looked better than it tasted. With a smidge more attention, it could've been a craveable dish (more veggies and seasoning, please). The sushi took a bit more time to arrive, even though there seemed to be a ton of sushi chefs. We found our California Rolls average. Feel you can find better sushi very nearby. We found lunch all-you-can-eat a good value at $17.99. This is hands down the best all you can eat sushi restaurant in Madison! We tried so many different things and I appreciated that the portions were smaller than a normal roll order would be so I was able to taste many different ones. My best food item ranking was: Badger Roll, Oshkosh Roll, Dumplings, Crab Rangoons, Spicy Tuna Roll. Least liked aka save your stomach and order more sushi: Spring Rolls (fine, but nothing standout), Calamari, Spicy Jalapeño Ball, Fried Oreos. I love the atmosphere. It's trendy and clean and the sushi bar is LONG and fun to watch the chefs work. Service was fine. Sometimes it took our server a bit more time to get back to us once we finished and were looking to order more. It was pretty busy though and I did feel like she was attentive. Appetizers and hibachi arrived in small half or quarter portions, sushi arrived in healthy portions. I love the lighting it was easy to converse with people at my table or the server. You pay .50 for any left over sushi over 4 pieces. The menu states excess left overs will be charged. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be four pieces per person four pieces per table. If you have four people at your table and there's four pieces that's not really excess if you have one person and there's four pieces that might be excess but if you have two people and five pieces they consider it excess. The guideline should be a bit more clear.. and really you don't know how much sushi they're bringing per role type. So two pieces left over for one person and three pieces left over for another. You will be charged for one though the table rule is more than four pieces. I'm not sure the legality in this process especially since the menu states you "may be charged" for excess rather than you will be charged .50 if more than four pieces remain in addition to not specifying if it's per person. Though it was no concern. Four pieces could be an entire role that you ordered, which could be excessive. The hibachi steak was tasty, the onion soup, and the miso soup were tasty, the ginger salad dressing was very sweet I mixed in the regular ginger sauce which ended up tasting like the ginger salad dressing I'm used to. I believe the hibachi chicken we received was actually teriyaki sauce. It was very sweet. If you like teriyaki, it was spot on for teriyaki. Tempura shrimp appetizer came with two pieces the breading reminds me of donuts rather than typical tempura. Coconut shrimp appetizer comes with about 3 to 4 small shrimp pieces. I believe we got a double order. We enjoyed our warm sushi, some of them fell apart when picking up which I'm not used to. The eel was slimy and gross; I can still feel the crawling sensation on my tongue. Service was a bit slow and we had about 5 different servers. I was starving and we tried half the menu. I was surprised to find that my usual go-to order (salmon skin hand rolls) at sushi restaurants wasn't available on the menu this time. Nevertheless, I sampled a variety of other sushi rolls! One thing I appreciated was their practice of serving smaller portions, which prevented excess food waste. Among the dishes I tried, the standout was definitely the salmon hand rolls which were generously packed with flavorful salmon. The hibachi steak also impressed with its quality and provided a refreshing break from the constant flow of sushi. Overall, service was pretty quick for us given we went during lunch hours during the week. I can definitely see this place getting busy at night though. Uh yeah!' When I think of "all you can eat" sushi I think cafeteria style quality-slightly above gas station outside of Hawaii or California. That is not this. Solidly good quality sushi and sashimi. Nice atmosphere. Great menu options for the area. Gourmet? No. But a very solid quality throughout. Their appetizer r sushi items are truly amazing-like I cannot believe they are included in the AYCE deal. When I eat sushi it never seems to fill me up so this business model with this quality is my kind of place. I personally had the crab Rangoon appetizer (very nice) a hot sake (delightful), fried Oreo (surprisingly good) and 62 pieces of sushi/sashimi. For $37 plus tax and tip. An amazingly good deal. But the cherry on top was our server, Kelsey who was kind beyond measure, attentive almost to a fault and truly engaging. She brought my 11 year old Pokeman cards with the check. It's almost certainly the best AYCE sushi in Madison. The rice quality was not perfect, but overall the food was pretty good and there were interesting options for an AYCE flat rate. I liked the unagi (as always) and the surf clam was really interesting (flavor was great, texture was weird). If you have a big appetite, and want a variety of sushi & non-sushi foods this is a good option, but if you don't want too much there are better sushi options. The place was pretty busy, so service was a bit hit or miss where some people's orders took a long time to arrive and others showed up right away. The space was nicely decorated. I think we need to address the snow crab issue. The menu states they offer snow crab rolls when there is zero real crab to be found at this place. Oh, unless you count one special roll with minute pieces of weirdly deep fried soft shell crab (it was giving Nosferatu). So anything that says "snow crab" will be "crabstick". The waitress said that "in the beginning" they offered snow crab but "too many people ordered it". They have been running this grift for over a year now (yes I got dragged back again) and there's still no crab in sight. Also, if you find fish paste repulsive, skip this place. A friend and I decided to check out Sushi Lover on a Wednesday night. We were warmly welcomed and immediately seated. There were only a couple other tables around 7:30pm on a weeknight. We were provided menus and ordered multiple dishes. We tried a couple classic rolls, a couple specialty rolls, a few sushi pieces, and some appetizers. The quality of the sushi was superb for Madison! It will not disappoint! Fresh fish and good ratio of fish to rice. My only critique is that the mango kani salad had a bit too much mayo for my taste. The waitress was very attentive, coming to check if we would like to put in another order often. One critique is that although the waitress would come check in on us, she would not clear the plates. It appeared as that was someone else's duty, but at one point we had three empty plates stacked to the side for a while. I will attribute that to new staff, being a brand new restaurant in its opening stages. Overall, I will definitely be back! I plan to hype this place up to anyone who will listen. So this spot promises all you can eat sushi for the price tag of $30. Some sushi do add an additional cost, and if you waste food, there is an additional charge as well. I really like that idea of charging if people are going to waste food to reduce food waste. That being said, the service has ways to go. One of our party members had dietary restrictions, and our server brought out the wrong dish multiple times. I understand things will be busy, but as a server, it is important to be mindful of dietary restrictions, especially when the table reminds you with each order they place. We saw it was busy and every time we placed an order we emphasized the need for gluten free (no panko or tempura). After messing up our orders twice, she didn't offer any sort of compensation for the one diner who she kept messing up on. It made the whole experience awkward and the management did not help either. A little confusing, especially when you add the restaurant week menu, it takes a minute to understand the pricing. It's an All You Can Eat place, so there is an add med charge to carry out any leftovers. Not terrible, but it will add to your bill. We ordered a bunch of different items, all were very good and we ate too much. The concept may be good if you are going with a group. Their sushi is comparable to what you would find at the grocery store. I went solo for lunch, found that the rolls were 8 pieces. They have a few basic rolls on the menu that are only 5 pieces. Needless to say, it is very hard for a solo or even a couple dining there to enjoy the experience of trying a variety of rolls. They will not make a smaller portion (4 rolls) for solo or couple dining, and they up charge for each piece you do not eat. (.50). At other all you can eat (ACYE) sushi places I have dined at; the rolls are usually 3-4 pieces which makes it easier to try a few different rolls. Variety is not great either compared to other ACYE sushi restaurants. I get better variety of sushi and hibachi at The World Buffett nearby. Service was so, so. Waitress was wearing a food-stained shirt and apron at start of lunch opening. Don't know if she doesn't wash her uniform between shifts or what. That was off putting to begin with.
