Most recent visit December 2025 First visit Labor Day 2024 Review of 4 stars encompasses all visits. The needs improvement: Bathroom lacks hot water. Soap dispenser was suspect. The good During my 2025 winter visit they respectfully placed all the unhoused/homeless individual belongings in a bag and put it to the side. This shows empathy, heart and respect. The bad: Kid visited without me and they were charged an excess fee for broth left behind on ramen. This is wild. The best thing you can get: Tempura shrimp (not greasy, light and flavorful) ** Sushi. I partook December 2025 and can't stop thinking about how filling the role was and tasty and made fresh + fast. The rice just rolled into my mouth while everything was done well. 1 roll was filling that's how thoughtfully curated it was made. Both time service was good but the most recent visit the service was personable and talkative which I welcomed as we shared an affinity for their tempura shrimp. Great value for what they offer. I'd much rather have this buffet setup akin to the Italian buffet setup versus a hot bar with stale food. Make it to order. Great variety. I really want to like this place because I saw it had 4 stars on Yelp. However, my experience didn't really reflect what'd I expect from a 4 star yelp place. I think the restaurant might have been short staffed. It was a Friday evening and I only saw one server running around. I also waited some time as well. It seemed like the food was coming out quicker than the server can deliver as well because they'd be on this cart with a bunch of other orders. Besides service, the sushi was also a bit lacking... I had a feeling there'd be a lot of rice and I was right... the sushi ratio was definitely more rice. The sashimi cuts were also pretty thin. I ordered one salmon that had the fishiest taste I just couldn't even eat it... I've never left so much before. The saving grace for the dinner was the ice cream at the end. I don't think I would come back... a lot of the rolls also had shrimp which I'm allergic to. The pictures were misleading and I had higher expectations. Server was friendly though. read more

We waited an hour to get our food and we only got a salad a miso soup and we waited another 15 mins for the rest of the food. We never got service to refill our drinks we asked for a fork and waited 20 mins until we asked again. The food is okay but not worth the wait. Very, very aggressively mediocre. Service was slow/unresponsive. They use a typical AYCE turn-in a check-off paper menu to order your food. Several items from our first round were forgotten/omitted, and we had to flag down a waitress to request them more than once, as nobody came to visit to check on us or clear away empty plates. Sushi was basically grocery store quality, and items that should have been hot arrived luke warm, and items that should have been cold arrived...luke warm. None of the regular Japanese food (gyoza, tempura, etc.) was prepared in what any Japanese person would consider the standard/normal manner. Gyoza should not be deep-fried, it is pan-fried and steamed. The tempura was more like a beer-batter with a thick crust and doughy batter underneath than light and wispy, and also arrived pre-sauced with some kind of sweet sauce that I truly don't understand -- and no tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce made from dashi, soy, and mirin.) None of the staff are Japanese -- not important in and of itself, but if you're claiming to serve Japanese food, and nobody actually "knows what right looks like," it's a very disappointing dining experience for your guests when they do know. Overall the only redeeming quality was that $16.99 for AYCE is a steal -- though I ate far less than I could since none of it was very good. read more

AYCE sushi has been on the east side for years but now it's a quick walk down the street! Of course, don't expect gourmet food but I was pretty happy with what I got for a $20 lunch. The fried tofu is not the same as agedashi, it's softer and had some weird whitish sauce on it that made me think of what probably goes into spicy tuna rolls. It's ok but I won't get it again. Seaweed salad is the standard offering but on top of cabbage, same with the salmon skin salad which has a teriyaki sauce. I don't care for the cabbage part. Got quite a few rolls and sushi. The tuna is, as mentioned, not the highest quality but can't complain too much. I'd say it's similar in texture to the Aldi frozen tuna - not smooth, has a characteristic thawed texture. Tofu skin = inari, but it's shorter and thicker than usual. Tuna tataki was extremely lightly seared but somehow still had a smoky flavor. Shrimp tempura had the same off-white sauce as the fried tofu. Texture was also different than typical tempura. I prefer the typical style and sauce. Everything is made to order. The sushi chefs might be a bit forgetful and leave out a piece or 2, you may need to ask your server, but it'll come out and it doesn't cost you any extra :) There is also hibachi and ramen, though I didn't get any on this visit. read more

I like this place. For an all you can eat sushi restaurant it has its perks. When I went I ordered off the menu and it was fine. I wasn't super impressed. Service was mediocre. It wasn't that busy and I would have expected a little better. My partner tried to order a soda multiple times on the all you can eat sheets and struggled to receive. The ambiance is pretty typical of a sushi restaurant, but was very spacious. Lots of tables to seat many people. read more

The price isn't bad for AYCE, especially since hibachi, ramen, teriyaki and appetizers are available to select from the menu. Sigh. I was really excited to come here for my birthday, so it was a bit of a bummer for the day after not to count, like it would at most any other restaurant. But okay, fair enough, fine. Their restaurant, their rules. Unfortunately, though, this wasn't their only issue, or I'd probably not even mention it. Ordering was kind of hectic and took awhile, maybe 20 minutes or so to get menus and order. It took forever to get our drinks. People's food came out with large gaps in between so some in our group just had to sit and wait while others in our group were eating. This was the first round, during which an ordered salad never came, ordered waters never came, and one's hot tea FINALLY arrived super late. Multiple times the wrong food was almost given to us, or they didn't know what item they were trying to serve. With multiple menus involved, they should keep track of what food goes to whom. It was not as if we all ordered one large order together. Fast forward to round two, where again a salad was ordered, and again it never came. It took an HOUR in between ordering and when the food came, again with large gaps in between people's food coming out. We were at the two hour mark at this point, and we had to leave for a show. Our server informed us that we had to eat everything or be charged, which I understand is typical for AYCE, but we argued that it wasn't our fault it took such a long time and we had somewhere to be. Thankfully he obliged and we were not charged anything extra. And we still never even got everything we ordered. Overall, a very underwhelming experience and a very subpar one for a birthday outing of eight people. Thankfully, the silver lining is that we were actually generally pleased with the food itself, but the service (and chef staff?) needs serious work. It's great we have an AYCE experience in Madison, but in its current iteration I would not be able to recommend anyone go here. I hope to be able to give it another try later down the road, but there are serious kinks that need to be worked out first. Addendum: I forgot to mention the unwelcome, surprise credit card surcharge, which is unfortunately becoming more common but still deserves to be called out. It should be part of the cost of doing business, and dealing with cash is more cumbersome, less secure, and leaves room for error. Credit cards are not strictly for the customer's convenience. The business benefits too. And lest I forget the suggested tips on the receipt, which were based on post-tax amounts, instead of pre-tax, which has traditionally been the societal norm. I'm pretty much in love. I came here with a friend from out of town, and didn't realize that there was a new restaurant here. Sake is an all-you-can-eat (if you want to... you can order off the regular menu, too) gem. You can get all the sushi menu (the sashimi is limited to 15 pieces but that seems generous) and basically the entire rest of the menu as well. My friend ordered the hibachi, some sashimi, and some kind of appetizer. I loaded up on the sushi. I love this place because even though it is all-you-can-eat, they still make it to order... it's not like some places where it's a buffet of sushi left out for hours. The staff is really nice and attentive too, and they explained how the menu worked and were great with answering questions. Loved the vibe and the soft music in the background... Our favorite all-you-can-eat sushi place is Wonita in Milwaukee, which is a 1.5-hour drive for us, so we were delighted when Sake opened in Madison! Sake is a nice, clean place, with very good service and an extensive menu. We went with a group of friends and got many different dishes to share. They are closed on Mondays! I've been there in the past when they first opened. It was really good at a time. Pricing was confusing, but it was a cool little spot. Amazing place! Near a middle/high school so the street can get busy during lunch time. Did the all you can eat and can't believe they have wifi. Worst birthday dinner of my life. Food quality is awful and I'm likely going to get sick from the few pieces of sushi I ate. They forgot an entire entree on my order but had no problem charging me as well. If you want gray colored fish that smells "off" to say the least, this is the place for you.
