Salmon Love Roll and Rainbow Roll
    David V.

I really want to like this place because I saw it had 4 stars on Yelp. However, my experience didn't really reflect what'd I expect from a 4 star yelp place. I think the restaurant might have been short staffed. It was a Friday evening and I only saw one server running around. I also waited some time as well. It seemed like the food was coming out quicker than the server can deliver as well because they'd be on this cart with a bunch of other orders. Besides service, the sushi was also a bit lacking... I had a feeling there'd be a lot of rice and I was right... the sushi ratio was definitely more rice. The sashimi cuts were also pretty thin. I ordered one salmon that had the fishiest taste I just couldn't even eat it... I've never left so much before. The saving grace for the dinner was the ice cream at the end. I don't think I would come back... a lot of the rolls also had shrimp which I'm allergic to. The pictures were misleading and I had higher expectations. Server was friendly though.

Overall a good experience but I'd put it a tier below sushi lover for ayce sushi places on the west side because: -lower fish:rice ratio for the nigiri -the side dishes were not as good. Crab Rangoon had the wrong texture and hibachi did not have the smoky wok hey flavor But the special rolls were good and gotta respect the family-owned business hustle!

    Supposed to be vegetable tempura.

Very, very aggressively mediocre. Service was slow/unresponsive. They use a typical AYCE turn-in a check-off paper menu to order your food. Several items from our first round were forgotten/omitted, and we had to flag down a waitress to request them more than once, as nobody came to visit to check on us or clear away empty plates. Sushi was basically grocery store quality, and items that should have been hot arrived luke warm, and items that should have been cold arrived...luke warm. None of the regular Japanese food (gyoza, tempura, etc.) was prepared in what any Japanese person would consider the standard/normal manner. Gyoza should not be deep-fried, it is pan-fried and steamed. The tempura was more like a beer-batter with a thick crust and doughy batter underneath than light and wispy, and also arrived pre-sauced with some kind of sweet sauce that I truly don't understand -- and no tentsuyu (tempura dipping sauce made from dashi, soy, and mirin.) None of the staff are Japanese -- not important in and of itself, but if you're claiming to serve Japanese food, and nobody actually "knows what right looks like," it's a very disappointing dining experience for your guests when they do know. Overall the only redeeming quality was that $16.99 for AYCE is a steal -- though I ate far less than I could since none of it was very good.

Chewy spicy ahi roll it was

So first meal of the day wanted sushi. Saw the reviews so my not so I ordered the shrimp tempura roll. It was cold then I ordered the sashimi plate. The sashimi tasted old as well. Then I got my spicy ahi roll it was chewy. Mostly all the sushi was chewy. The service was slow so it took a while to get soda.

One of the better sushi places in Madison. Maybe order ahead if you're under time constraints. I love the private table rooms in the back area. We did not do the all-you-can-eat option. Maybe that is why our orders took a bit longer than expected. But once it arrived, the food was fresh and delicious. Very satisfied with the food and the service.

Fried tofu, seaweed salad (cabbage below), miso soup

AYCE sushi has been on the east side for years but now it's a quick walk down the street! Of course, don't expect gourmet food but I was pretty happy with what I got for a $20 lunch. The fried tofu is not the same as agedashi, it's softer and had some weird whitish sauce on it that made me think of what probably goes into spicy tuna rolls. It's ok but I won't get it again. Seaweed salad is the standard offering but on top of cabbage, same with the salmon skin salad which has a teriyaki sauce. I don't care for the cabbage part. Got quite a few rolls and sushi. The tuna is, as mentioned, not the highest quality but can't complain too much. I'd say it's similar in texture to the Aldi frozen tuna - not smooth, has a characteristic thawed texture. Tofu skin = inari, but it's shorter and thicker than usual. Tuna tataki was extremely lightly seared but somehow still had a smoky flavor. Shrimp tempura had the same off-white sauce as the fried tofu. Texture was also different than typical tempura. I prefer the typical style and sauce. Everything is made to order. The sushi chefs might be a bit forgetful and leave out a piece or 2, you may need to ask your server, but it'll come out and it doesn't cost you any extra :) There is also hibachi and ramen, though I didn't get any on this visit.

Went to the soft opening for lunch with friends! For lunch you can order anything off the menu for AYCE. Exceptions: section for AYCE dinner rolls and Sushi Sashimi/Sashimi Combo. We tried the tempura, miso soup, spicy salmon salad, hibachi beef (only beef and vegetables), and several rolls. The price isn't bad for AYCE, especially since hibachi, ramen, teriyaki and appetizers are available to select from the menu. According to their menu, only the AYCE Dinner is available on the weekends!

I'm pretty much in love. I came here with a friend from out of town, and didn't realize that there was a new restaurant here. Sake is an all-you-can-eat (if you want to... you can order off the regular menu, too) gem. You can get all the sushi menu (the sashimi is limited to 15 pieces but that seems generous) and basically the entire rest of the menu as well. My friend ordered the hibachi, some sashimi, and some kind of appetizer. I loaded up on the sushi. I love this place because even though it is all-you-can-eat, they still make it to order... it's not like some places where it's a buffet of sushi left out for hours. The staff is really nice and attentive too, and they explained how the menu worked and were great with answering questions. Loved the vibe and the soft music in the background... I've told all my friends about this place and I'm very excited to go back. It's a great deal!

Wow! Such a pleasant surprise. Most all-you-can-eat joints don't give you such an amazing dinning experience. We loved it! Definitely going back.

I really loved trying the AYCE at Sake. The host and waiter were very welcoming! The food was really good. The lobster role was delicious!! The restaurant was beautiful and the space was lovely!

Food is good for AYCE. Not as fresh a sushi product as per unit priced places but if you want ayce while watching the badgers this would be perfect. Rainbow roll is recommended Service was bad. They forgot to check for kitchen orders. They ignored our orders of sushi we could plainly see waiting for pickup. Waitstaff seemed inexperienced. Ramen was good, fried wings were stellar, and overall a fun and quality offering.

Ayce lunch and dinner options, great service, and great food. I highly recommend trying it. I wish it was closer to the East side.

Yummy sushi but beware don't over order because they will charge you for the extra sushi and they won't warn you if you order too much.

Quite possibly not just the worst sushi, but the worst food I've ever had in my life! The young…read morewoman in front was friendly and seemed nice, but had zero knowledge about the food. She called the sushi "chef" (that's a stretch in this case!) several times to answer questions. I asked if there were any spicy rolls, and he suggested a few, but they all contained imitation crab, which I find unappetizing. I finally settled on a Spicy Salmon Roll and a Soft Shell Crab Roll. I also ordered a Miso Soup. The Miso Soup arrived first, and it was a very watered-down version of Miso Soup with no umami. I stopped and pushed it aside after a couple of spoonfuls. The rolls arrived, and I was about to ask for wasabi and pickled ginger when I noticed these little pre-packaged plastic bags of wasabi and pickled ginger. I should have left then . . . a big mistake to stay. I started on the Spicy Salmon Roll. One bite and I knew I wouldn't enjoy it. I've never tasted such a mediocre take on sushi rolls. I ate two pieces because I was hungry, but it was all I could stomach. I looked at the Soft Shell Crab Roll and noticed that it contained imitation crab. I called the young woman over, and of course, she went and got the "chef". I told him that I didn't recall seeing imitation crab in the description of the roll on the menu. He said he'd make me a fresh batch without the imitation crab. The replacement roll came, and there were little red bits of something sprinkled on top of each slice. I called the young woman over and asked her what it was. She insisted that it was tobiko. Honey, I'm from California, and I know tobiko when I see it. This ain't tobiko. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Again, another big mistake. I took a bite and quickly spat it out because my chest suddenly felt constricted. I started coughing, and tears began streaming down my face. My mouth felt like there had been a chemical explosion, and I had trouble breathing. I called the girl over again and, with a raspy voice, asked her what was in the roll. Of course, she called the "chef", and instead of answering my question, he told me he would refund me for the roll. My curiosity got the better of me. I was pretty certain it was the little red bits of "tobiko" that caused the reaction I had, so I scraped them off the next roll and removed the piece of soft shell crab, ate it, and it was fine. I braved myself and took a bite of the roll with the "tobiko", and had the same reaction as before. That was it. I'd had enough of this wannabe sushi joint. I gathered my things, told the young woman this was the worst food I've ever had, and left. That was such a frightening experience. The pain in my chest subsided after an hour or so, but my voice remained raspy for the rest of the day. I will never go back and wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. How this place garnered 4.4 stars is beyond me. Giving it 1 star is being overly generous!
