Anywho, this time my daughter and I were in Madison for the day and visiting the museum across the street and decided to come for dinner. It was Thursday evening and they had a ribs/pulled pork special. We waited about 10 minutes at the bar for a table. The bar and atmosphere is great. Pretty bar lights and an old wood bar. The ambiance is amazing warm woods which were very inviting. Wednesday night 5:30 a party of 6 and we were seated immediately in the bar area at a round table. The waitress was quick to come over bringing menus and taking our drink order. We order the cheese curds of course and the cheese plate. Visiting from Florida so I can't really speak on the curds. We all thought they were tasty. For our main course two of us had burgers all claimed they were well prepared and tasty, Mac n cheese was dry, spinach salad with salmon was fresh and flavorful. I had the wedge salad which was over a half head of fresh crispy lettuce. Two dressings combo so refreshing. The cheese tray was nice for $14.00. First, the one good thing. The cheese curds were really good if salty. The rest. The service was poor at best. I guess our waitress was having a bad day? The food - hamburgers and fish - took forever! It's wasn't crowded. The French fries were tough and cold. The hamburger - which has a fried egg - was cold. The salad? Just lettuce straight from a bag. When I pointed all this out it was clear the waitress couldn't care. The manager seemed lost. Oh, the "replacement" burger was still not really done. Ambiance itself is great! I ordered the spicy burger and it was so so. Nothing grand about it. Not spicy at all. I asked for a side of paprika aioli as that's all they had but the server did recommend I add Valentina to it. Made it much better! Nothing crazy about the fries. Similar to McDonald's tbh. I ordered 2 old fashions to try a few off their menu and the classic was the best. Finished off with a whiskey sundae. My coworkers and I stopped in for dinner as we were in the area for a work conference. We didn't have any recommendations so we went rogue on ordering. I'm a huge Philly sandwich lover so that was a given. Also tried the Cobb salad with chicken, chips and dip, and their shoestring onion rings. The chips and dip were amazing. You have to get those! The whole table loved them. I tried the Philly sandwich, but I didn't like the huge bun it was served on. The meat itself was fine, but it lacked proper flavor and didn't have enough peppers and onions in it. Surprisingly the Cobb salad was the star of the show for me. I asked for no blue cheese, but they served it with blue cheese anyways. We were so hungry I just ate it. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the blue cheese since it was mellow. The location right off the Capitol Square is perfect, and the atmosphere is classic Wisconsin--cozy, lively, and great for grabbing a drink and food. This was a highly recommended place and it didn't disappoint. We ordered fried cheese curds, a cheese and meat platter, bacon mac and cheese. The place had good ambiance and great cocktail menu as well and also got their old fashioned. The mac and cheese was definitely their highlight, including smoked trout in their platter. After hearing about this restaurant for some time, glad to finally make it out there as it was a great time for myself and my guests. Located right across from the Capitol, it made for a dramatic backdrop to the restaurant. Additionally, the hustle bustle of downtown Madison lends itself to tons of folks coming and going so try to leave yourself some additional time to cozy up to the bar and grab a drink because you will likely be waiting a short while for a table. Also, parking is atrocious and you may need to hunt for a spot and walk a bit to get back to the restaurant. You've been warned but the destination is worth the journey. Btw - beer is extremely reasonable and they have dozens of taps which is super cool. I think I only paid like $3 for my beer but full disclosure, I only like beer that you can see through and it was a local beer so YMMV. Once seated, service was excellent throughout and we started with something that TOF is known for, the cheese curds. When they arrived at the table, they were sizable curds of random shapes/sizes (so clearly homemade) and their consistency was so light and airy that it was truly some of the best I've ever had. Granted, I'm not from WI where cheese curds fall from trees, but to my touristy palette, these were excellent. There were a ton of great menu choices but I ended up ordering the pork schnitzel and it was spectacular. Reasonably priced yet crispy and moist (a combo that's hard to acheive!) and I loved the unusual cherry mustard sauce that paired well with the entree. If you're schnitzel hunting, just be aware that this is only served at night. (As of my review) The folks that were with me all loved the warm Cheers bar type ambiance, and super enjoyed their meal and they all noted they can hardly wait to come back when they land back in Madison. This place is decked out for Christmas and looks great. Are server was very sweet and split our burger for us. Service was very prompt. They aren't kidding when they say the best cheese curds. I've been trying quite a few since moving here and these are by far the best. I think I swoomed over every single bite of my burger. Maybe the best burger I've ever had in a restaurant. It's so fun inside, especially right now, while it's decorated for Xmas. The place was tidy (even the bathrooms were super nice) and all of the staff were friendly and helpful. If you come to eat alongside your beverages? Come hungry! My partner and I split the spinach salad and the schnitzel plate and STILL took leftovers home! I wanted to get the curds but we were cheesed out (Lakefront curds and the Mars cheese castle ). They are award winning here, so if you are remotely in the mood, order them. Door County Cherry Salad - perfection. Great ratio of dressing to lettuce. The blue cheese was not overpowering and the cherries were such a great add. I would order this anytime I'm in Madison Heirloom BLT- I believe this is seasonal but that means that you need to hurry here and order it. Absolutely amazing. Location is great. We went in the summer and sat outside people watching and looking at the capital. Love this spot and I will dream of this salad until the next time I get here. read more

Im an out-of-towner so I wanted to get the full Wisconsin tasting experience. People said this was the place to go. And I wasnt disappointed. I started with a Wisconsin Old Fashioned. THey make them with brandy in Wisconsin - not bourbon like everywhere else. Its also a little more dilluted because they give it a shot of sprite. I loved it ! Nice Summer drink. Not as intense as a tradional Old F....I ended up having two. On to the food - I got a sandwich with two Wisconsin brats on it with a side of deep fried cheese curds. THe sandwich was great - pretzel bun and yummy brats. I would have fried the onions on there instead of using raw - but they were yummy too. The cheese curds were a delicous side of saturated fat =) My tummy liked them more than my heart. Also I think I had to drink about a half gallon of water to rehydrate after those. Nice little treat - I wouldnt eat them regularly. The people behind the bar were fast and friendly. The room is a pretty old-school vibe with lots of dark hardwood fixtures. They definitely lived up to the hype and were perfectly gooey and crispy. The patty melt was also very good and tasted very fresh. Just very inconsistent. I went here on a work trip and sat at the bar. I ordered the same old fashioned 3 times and each time i watched the bartender make it different. Using different alcohol and fruit and everything. Very strange. The building is old and wood and has a musky smell, if you come when it is hot out, the air conditioner either is awful or broken, but it gets very hot in the right side of the building. They are on the more expensive side for drinks in the Madison area, so if looking for cheap beer, this place isn't it. The food is good, but outside of work, I wouldn't come on my own. read more

My friend order a sour & explained the difference was the type of soda used. It was ok. Ordered the Fried Perch with Fries, Coleslaw & added side of Mac & cheese. Perch was not fried fresh and lukewarm to touch which made the dish unappealing. Fries lack salt. Coleslaw was good. Macaroni was horrible! Not cheesy or creamy! Very underwhelming! Server Amalia was not attentive. Didn't refill drinks or check on us. Thankfully her colleagues were helpful.
