This weekend I was in the area and checked out Off Broadway Drafthouse. Surprisingly, it wasn't packed despite the packer game on a Sunday afternoon. I was greeted by a friendly host, sat at the bar and promptly greeted by the bartender. Lots of fun options for draft cocktails with creative names and many use local spirits. I opted for the Birria sandwich, a newer menu item. It has a spicy sauce and generous portions. It was calm and cozy at the bar which I appreciated after a busy weekend. read more

I've been here a few times now since my first review, and Off Broadway continues to deliver on their food and drink selection. The drink menu has numerous beers on tap, although this summer I've seen fewer dark beers (I know it's not the season, but I don't like light colored beer). Last time I was there I went with the Old Fashioned and it was pretty good. The food menu also delivers solid options that feed a wide range of palettes. Staff has always been kind, knowledgeable, and the kind of crew that's actually fun to have a conversation with. They will linger just an extra few seconds to actually make it a little more personable, a nice touch these days. Parking can still be a nightmare when it's crowded and while it's not a huge place, I haven't had super long waits (don't usually go on weekends). Always a solid recommendation when deciding where to eat. read more

Love this restaurant!! The wait staff are patient and efficient. All the dishes I've ordered here are outstanding. Most recently I stopped in for lunch on a Friday. Tried the (only on Friday) perch. I've been to Off Broadway Drafthouse multiple times and it never disappoints. It's one of those neighborhood gems that feels great no matter the season. The patio is perfect in the summer, and the inside is warm and cozy in the winter. The food is consistently excellent. Their rotating specials are a huge highlight. Last night I had their fried chicken and it was outstanding -- the breading was crisp, light, and perfectly seasoned. You can tell they put care into everything they serve. Their other specials like the Nashville chicken sandwich, ribs, and Friday fish fry are always worth checking out too. Desserts are always a win here, so I try to save room. Drinks are solid as well with plenty of beer and cocktail options. The only downside is parking. The lot fills up fast, so you may end up on the street if you arrive later. But honestly, the food and atmosphere make it more than worth it. Easily one of my favorite spots in Madison. read more

We went with a group of 5 for the Friday Night Fish Fry. I'll start by saying it's a solid and serviceable fish fry. We had reservations for 7:45 (the earliest I could get them 2 days ahead of time. This said they were out of baked cod, baked potatoes, and hash browns. Not a shortcoming on their part, I don't think, rather a testament to the restaurant popularity. The seared walleye was decent, perhaps a bit bland. The Yukon potato wedges were serviceable if not a little undercooked and seasoned. The fired perch as quite good, as were the garlic mashed potatoes. Those that had the fired cod were happy with it. The Cheese curds were decent and everyone enjoyed them. The drink menu is robust and features local Wollersheim wines and spirits. I quite fancy a place that features local sundries and ingredients. The standout of the night I think was the pumpkin cheesecake. The apple pie with vanilla ice cream was fine... but that cheesecake was outstanding. The gram cracker crust provided a nice contrast to the smooth cheesecake. The service was really very friendly, and quite efficient given how busy it was. There is outdoor seating as well as this hybrid indoor/outdoor veranda seating which we found quite lovely and much less noisy than the indoor area. Very solid spot for a casual bite. Taplist was lacking in diversity for my taste, lotta pilsners and lagers. I got the bloody because I saw they'd won an award for it, and thought it was just okay. Food was great though, great mash to go with the fried chicken which was excellent. Also tried to order the carrot cake and they were out of the Nashville chicken sandwich is only offered on Tuesday. Should make that a special and not actually put that on the menu. I ordered the chicken wrap. It was very good and hubby got the fried chicken and potatoes. Very good as well. The service is horrible here. It would make me question going back since that really adds to the experience of the place. Very slow. Never checked back. The food is about the only thing great here. We made a tactical error, and showed up on a Friday evening during a fish fry, with a wait for a table running to 35 minutes... with no place to sit while we waited... with one of our party using a walker. And that is where everything turned around. Staff checked on us every few minutes, kept us updated, and got us seated right when they said they would. The constantly changing beer list was outstanding, and they were very gracious when, after a couple of samples, I decided that the beer would compete with the food. I ordered takeout today from Off Broadway Drafthouse. The parking is very limited here so you'll likely have to find street parking which wasn't a big deal. The interior is nice! They have some outdoor seating it looked like - a covered area and some patio seating but I'm not sure if they serve the patio. The salmon was good - I got a side of garlic aoli dipping sauce since it didn't come with a glaze or anything which I like to have. The sauce was good especially with the fries! They have ample seating both indoors and out. We were seated in joes garden which almost feels as if you're being treated like royalty in this secluded area. We used a gift card for off Broadway two months ago and we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was!! We ordered 2 deep fried fish dinners with sides and our bill was $35. We ordered for pick up again, and then went and dined in the restaurant. We had the fish fry and it was delicious as usual. Our waiter was wonderful, in fact every employee has a fun personality. We ordered fish again for pick up last night and found it to be a bit pricier at $50. $2 for extra tartar sauce, and the price had gone up to $22 per fish dinner. Rather a large jump in price. Apparently the price of fish has gone up $3 per pound. While they feel the need to raise their prices so high, I unfortunately, ordered the baked cod this time around and it came soaked in....paprika? Tried to scrape it off, not too successful. At least I had a baked potato and a small cup of cole slaw. Felt jipped for $22. Can only hope fish prices return to a reasonable price and we can go back. read more

Stopped in last weekend with my family for a celebration dinner, and we loved it! It was quiet, clean, and the staff is very friendly. Our table consisted of 6 adults and 3 children, and the service was phenomenal for a group of our size. We put in orders for cheese curds and fried portabella mushrooms. The cheese curds were awesome, and both the basil buttermilk dressing and the garlic aioli were superb. The portabella mushrooms weren't my cup of tea, but I am not a big mushroom person to begin with. For my beverage, I opted for the OBD Old Fashioned, and it was exquisite! So much flavor, and those cherries were delicious. For my entrée I chose the fried chicken - it wasn't as crispy as I would've liked, and there seemed to be a little more fat within the meat than I typically enjoy, but overall it was a solid meal. This is my happy place. Not only do they have delicious food, service, beer, and cocktails, but the atmosphere is so lovely with great music, lovely Wisconsin decor, and most importantly pet collective on two of the televisions. They're always set up the same so I know exactly where to sit to enjoy my experience to the fullest. This visit was a solo trip to take a few work phone calls (great wifi) and enjoy some lunch. The new Millions of Peaches drink was delicious, and not just because the name is spectacular. I also had the beet and goat cheese salad as well as the fried portabellas. They were both wonderful and I couldn't believe how much goat cheese was in the salad. This was our third visit, really liked it our previous visits. It was a Friday night and we knew we would have to wait. Arrived at 6:25 and was told it would be 30 minutes, as we expected. At 7 pm my wife checked and was told we were the next table for 3. While we were waiting, a group of 4 came and put their name in after us. Well, one of the women in this went to complain about the wait at 7:15. Making a scene they decided to seat that group of 4 before us. Squeaky wheel syndrome. We had emailed for a reservation, which they don't take, since we had a larger party coming to a not so big place, but we found out our reservation hadn't been communicated with the staff. We never would have known this place existed until we were looking for a lunch place on a lovely summer day and our cousin suggested Off Broadway. Once we found them we were pleasantly surprised how they converted a drab parking lot into a peaceful space not far from the buzz of the Beltline. With everything moving outdoors they have done a very good job creating an outdoor dining room with their beautiful gardens. (I have already sat in my share of dingy gravel and asphalt parking lot dining spaces - I know everyone is doing their best). They have paper menus or you can use your phone to scan a QR code. The cuz ordered the Wasting Time cocktail which she really enjoyed. I stuck to water. For my lunch I got the Chicken Diablo which was very good - I usually avoid chicken breast sandwiches because they can be dry but not this one. It was tender and it had good heat. And the ciabatta roll was very soft and the perfect complement . My wife got the War Pig sandwich - also a big success (and on the same roll). The waitress was friendly and efficient. Went here on a Tuesday night to grab some dinner. We were seated right away and our waitress was quick to come over and get our absurdly difficult drink order. I say this because it took our group forever to pick the drinks for the flight and they she had to skip around the table to get other drink orders. However she got every drink we asked for and the bartender had some great suggestions for the taps that they were out of. He also came over to check how the mocktail I got was. I have to say I highly recommend the Good Decision! As for food, we started with the cheese curds as our appetizer. They come with an option of dipping sauces. We opted for the basil buttermilk dressing, which was standout. The cheese curds themselves have a thicker breading than most, but still have plenty of cheese for the good cheese pull. The extra dusting of house blackening blend gives the curd the extra flavor to stand up to the dressing. For our main food we ordered the War Pig, the McCauley Steak Sandwich, the Nashville Hot Chicken Wrap, and the ABG salad with grilled sirloin. The steak sandwich seemed to stand out as the overall favorite, even though all sandwiches and salads were quite good. The horseradish aioli on the steak sandwich really punches through, but the sandwich still balances well, and the ciabatta bun is quite tasty on both sandwiches. The War Pig had plenty of pork and overall had a nice flavor. It was also a little less messy than the steak sandwich. The Nashville Hot Chicken wrap was very tasty but a little greasy. I think next time I would get it on a bun to absorb some of the grease that the wrap can't. Additionally, even though the sandwich tasted good, I do have the qualm that there was no spicy heat. It's a good chicken sandwich, but I don't think it can be called a Nashville Hot. The salads that come with the hand helds were not overly dressed, which I greatly appreciated and were a complement to the heaviness of the main food. Overall, great atmosphere in this place, from the decor to the friendliness of the staff, to the food. We also appreciate the selection of N/A options for drinks. It may be a little higher in price, but the quality is there. We can't wait to come back and try more of their food. Also these have now made my list of top 5 list for best cheese curds in the area! read more

We sat at the bar and the one male bartender was great but our first bartender just kind of ignored us. We were in town for a concert and decided to have dinner somewhere besides downtown Madison to hopefully beat the crowds. We definitely still had a decent wait, but they had a texting system and we were able to go for a walk and come back when our table was ready. They had a ton of options for speciality cocktails, which were super tasty - though our second round was pretty strong for our taste, so we had to pour a little water in it to dilute it for drinking. The amount of choices they had was really impressive. I would say the highlight of our meal was 100% the goat cheese. We had seen it online and we're excited about it all day.
