Full disclosure, I have spent a bit of time in Germany and worked for a while in a German restaurant run by native Germans with a German cook, so my bar for German food is high. The positives: The pretzel with cheese was good, hot fresh and a tasty warm cheese and onion dip. I highly recommend this if you're just in for a beer with a friend. The chicken schnitzel was well breaded and fried. The spaetzle was decent, and buttery. The glazed red cabbage was sweet and seasoned sensibly. The beer list was respectable. Nobody at my table ordered the sausages, but I thought it was good that they were locally made. The atmosphere was classic, with a few American twists such as high top tables and televisions with sports. The negatives: no air conditioning, so a bit uncomfortable for summer dining. The Sauerbraten was kind of dry. I was surprised it was not served with gravy, because that's traditional, and because it would have masked some of its dryness. They hid the red cabbage under the meat, not sure why, it's not like you eat them together like shepherd's pie. My daughter ordered eintopf, described as a "hearty stew". It was not a hearty stew. It was a brothy soup, very over- seasoned with massive amounts of celery seed. There were three cherry-tomato sized dumplings that were also overseasoned, in the same manner, or had been marinated in the soup. There was about a quarter cup of diced onion and carrot in the broth. The whole thing was absolutely indelible. My daughter had also ordered potato pancakes, but we were not served potato pancakes, but instead a single greasy order of undercooked hash browns. I would have sent them both back, but our waitress only returned to give us the check, and by that time my wife and I had fed our daughter by sharing with her the items we'd ordered for ourselves. Though the broth and hash browns were barely touched the waitress did not ask how we'd liked our dinners. She was new, I could tell, because when ordering, I'd asked her for her opinion about the sauerbraten, and she said she didn't know because she was a vegetarian. Nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, but you can still learn about the meat dishes that you're serving in a...German restaurant. I think this establishment is new, and they're still working out the kinks. Maybe I'd return in a year or two to see how things have shaped up. Also, they did not bring bread to the table. Usually German restaurants bring hearty dark bread or rolls with butter. Two beers, one soft drink, one app, and dinner for three, $115 with tip. read more

We got here at 8:45 PM, and even though the restaurant's posted hours said they were open until 10 PM, we were told the kitchen was already closing. I completely understand if a kitchen has a last-order time, but that should be clearly communicated in the posted hours. If customers are expected to arrive before a certain time to order food, that information should be listed so people don't make the trip for nothing. Came in on a Sunday night for a friend's birthday party and there was plenty of space for our 13+ group. They have some very long tables. The vibe is good, feels like a fun place to watch sports if you're into that. Despite our giant group, service was very quick and everyone got their food at about the same time. We were looking for dinner when we were in Madison and this place looked right up our alley... hefeweizens and weisswurst, what's not to like? It was a cute German bier garden vibe inside an old church with lots of stained glass windows. How fun! The beer was as expected and service was relatively quick. The weisswursts were not served poached as they are in Germany. I'm not sure if it's due to having another style of preparation or just the cook overdoing it, but the sausage was very dry and overdone. Neither of us that ordered it could easily peel the skins off either. The sides were so-so. I would have been happy with just two poached sausages and a pretzel as the entree like in Germany. Oh well. The chicken schnitzel was reported to be good from another member of our party. Love this place! A legit german beer garden / restaurant. The pretzel is a must do. Delicious! Corned beef sandwich was prepared fresh with kraut. HB on tap! I enjoyed the bar service from a nice lady. The location is a former Lutheran church, which apparently moved to a new location 40 years ago, so hasn't been a church for a long time. Prost is a German Bier hall/garden and they are good at what they do! I love that it's inside an old church and they have long old wooden tables, such a unique vibe for the area. I could see this space being great for a reunion with old classmates or a birthday celebration for my man. In spite of the delicate touches of the stained glass and beautiful architecture there is a distinct masculine vibe in here. Which is cool but feels a little limiting. It's a great space to hang out with 20-40 year old friends but I'm not going to bring my little one or my mother in law here, it's just a little too rowdy and loud. But the food is great! As long as you like meat and cheese and beer. Lots of sausages and fried things. There's also a HUGE pretzel on the menu, which I love. I'm a sucker for a good soft pretzel, even if I have to share it. And the service has been excellent each time we've been in, very friendly and kind in a way that doesn't feel phones at all. On the way back to my hotel after driving through downtown Madison, I saw a logo I hadn't seen since I was in Germany, years ago. It was then decided that Prost would be my first stop for a night out on the town. Upon entering, I was met by great decor, awesome staff, and great beer (of course). I had the 3 Sheeps IPA (had to support a local brewery), and the Gentry's Rosé. Both were great, but I was pleasantly surprised how smooth the IPA was. I'm always excited to hit up any place listed as German. We walked in as a split party of 8, with a 4/4 arrival. The first 4 were seated without the rest of the party being there yet. Always nice, but never expected. The server was accommodating - even snapped a group pic for us. The Pretzel was monstrous and cooked nicely, soft/ not overdone or dry. The hubs are I split a Schnitzel with a very thin sauce that lacked and real flavor. I'm not sure if that's how it usually is or if it had been thinned out. The schitzel was cooked golden and was a large serving but, as a Schnitzel Lover, i wouldn't order it again. I'd say our dish was ok, at best. I tried the sausage someone else had ordered & truly wish we'd ordered that - and I'm not big on sausage, but it was delicious. If I'm ever back, I'll be sure to go through the menu & select a new dish. The beer was good & there was a decent selection. My new favorite spot in Madison! I came here with my daughter and we both loved the space, service, and food. Situated in an old church, they successfully decorated this just like a Bavarian beer hall. It's truly gorgeous inside. Our server, Mateo, was super friendly and happy to accommodate when I asked him to surprise me with his favorite beer. He was also very knowledgable and helpful with a few questions about the menu. We started with the potato pancake which was basically a giant hash brown with some of the creamiest and sweetest sour cream you'll ever taste. My daughter had the massive chicken schnitzel with spaetzle and I ordered the "Small" (hahahaha) 2-Sausage Board. I asked Mateo to choose the two best wurst for me and he selected the Thüringer (beef, pork, garlic) and the Bratwurst (pork and beef). The food was delicious! I had the chicken strips which were thin and lightly coated. So much better than the thick battered strips. It came with a small cucumber and red onion salad. We ordered a half order of the pretzel. It was plenty for four people. I prefer a little softer pretzel, but it was still very good.
