Love this place! A legit german beer garden / restaurant. The pretzel is a must do. Delicious! Corned beef sandwich was prepared fresh with kraut. HB on tap! I enjoyed the bar service from a nice lady. The location is a former Lutheran church, which apparently moved to a new location 40 years ago, so hasn't been a church for a long time. On the way back to my hotel after driving through downtown Madison, I saw a logo I hadn't seen since I was in Germany, years ago. It was then decided that Prost would be my first stop for a night out on the town. Upon entering, I was met by great decor, awesome staff, and great beer (of course). I had the 3 Sheeps IPA (had to support a local brewery), and the Gentry's Rosé. Both were great, but I was pleasantly surprised how smooth the IPA was. I'm always excited to hit up any place listed as German. We walked in as a split party of 8, with a 4/4 arrival. The first 4 were seated without the rest of the party being there yet. The hubs are I split a Schnitzel with a very thin sauce that lacked and real flavor. I'm not sure if that's how it usually is or if it had been thinned out. The schitzel was cooked golden and was a large serving but, as a Schnitzel Lover, i wouldn't order it again. I'd say our dish was ok, at best. I tried the sausage someone else had ordered & truly wish we'd ordered that - and I'm not big on sausage, but it was delicious. If I'm ever back, I'll be sure to go through the menu & select a new dish. The beer was good & there was a decent selection. We ordered a half order of the pretzel. It was plenty for four people. I prefer a little softer pretzel, but it was still very good. Firstly, the decor is amazing. Making use of an old church to elaborately decorate as a traditional beer hall is an experience in itself. This place is pretty unique located in an old church with stain-glass windows and tall ceilings. There is a large bar with a ton communal tables or you can sit at tables for 4. I started off with the butternut squash soup which was creamy and delicious. It came with crispy pretzel bits that soften when mixed into the soup. For my main meal I had the pork schnitzel with buttery spaetzle. The pork with thin and crispy just the way I like it. It didn't have a ton of flavor so I squeezed extra lemon all over and that did the trick. The only part I was disappointed in was the kids meal. We order the kids "chicken schnitzel" expecting it to be a smaller portion of the adult version but in reality they were frozen chicken fingers cut in half. They also got a side of apple sauce from a container. I also expected the apple sauce to be fresh German apple sauce made in house. Had a first visit today to Prost. The service was attentive, friendly and they anticipated our needs so that we never wanted for a thing. Bartender was quick to assist Hannah, our server, as she was making sure all guests were satisfied. Our opener was the huge 1/2 pretzel. Biggest half ever! We shared the $20 small board.... Very satisfying pickled everything, ham & potatoes. Enjoyed the kasekrainer & weisswurst sausages w/mustards. The aesthetic of the old church with the stained glass and murals lends an unmatched old world ambience... For us, though, there was a clear downside, the hip-hop play list felt like a very "UW Sports-bar" scene, rather than a unique German dining experience, so that was a distinct drawback. This is our reason for 3 of 5 stars, it was loud and a little distracting. Obviously,music is a matter of taste, and sports-bar may be the vibe that they want to present. there are a lot of customer demographics in Madison and you'll probably never hit all of them. So, if you've never heard of Prost-- check it out. I can recommend the food! Hannah said, they have other playlists and there's no set genre, so we may check it out again.
