Time to update my review again -- and UPGRADE my review. I am consistently impressed by Viking Brew Pub. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I love that it's a local joint, love that it has a legit Viking ship bar that blows smoke/steam, and love getting beer brewed on site.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] And a nice variety of beer at that. It had been awhile since I've been here, but it continues to be delicious. We came here for a Friday fish fry and while busy, the wait wasn't terrible at all. We went to the bar to grab a drink, and it seemed a bit wrong not to get a beer but it also seemed wrong not to get an Old Fashioned while waiting for a fish fry. So, Makers Old Fashioned Sour it was, and it was really good! I'd definitely order it again, and love that they didn't over-fill it with ice. It could sit for a bit and not get so terribly watered down. But OMG the fish fry! We try out a new fish fry spot every month, or at least most months, and I have to say this fish is probably my #1 that we've had. It was so delicious. The breading on the outside was light but crispy, and the inside was juicy and moist (sorry, it's really the best word to describe this!). I brought the third piece home (it took a lot of willpower not to eat it). I tear the breading off and give some of the fish as a topper for my pup's dinner. This fish and breading was seriously so good I'd eat the breading straight out of the refrigerator off the fish. The french fries were good, but had a few too many that were overly crunchy (reject fries, as I like to call them). Even so, still good and the fish still gets it 5 stars and the title of "Best." The roll that came with it was likewise delicious. Elsa was a great and attentive server. Pepsi shop. The pretzel was great (we got the lingonberry sauce instead of the mustard and it was a sweeter but very tasty substitute). The Norwegian meatballs were tasty (the brown gravy was a bit heavy) and the fresh roll was to die for! The chicken in my sandwich wasn't vey flavorful and did not bring out the flavor of the pesto aoli. I would go back to try other offerings on the menu. read more

We were in town on a rainy Saturday and needed lunch so after scanning the reviews we decided to try this brew pub. [[HIGHLIGHT]]A big draw was the very cool bar that looks like a Viking ship with a dragon figurehead that blows smoke![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Strangely it doesn't open until noon so when we got there just a bit after twelve many of the tables were already taken. We got a high top in the bar and were soon served by a very friendly waitress. Even though everyone appeared to arrive at the same time there was not much of a wait for the food coming out from the kitchen. I tried their heathen wheat beer which was flavorful. For my main I ordered the Norwegian meatball Saturday special (still trying to figure out how they are different than Swedish meatballs). They were very good with a meatloaf like gravy and mash potatoes- actually it seemed like I was eating mini-meatloaves. My wife got the reuben which was loaded with meat and quite tasty. On a short road trip we stopped in at the Viking. Seated at the bar we got fast friendly service. After a bit of tasting we got a couple of their beers, very good. I had the black IPA called Soot In My Eye. We also ordered the prime rib sandwich to split. It arrived in ten minutes or so. It was excellent, clearly cooked with care. The fries were really good too. The Viking Brew Pub is definitely worth a visit. read more

Visiting friends and this is authentic Norwegian food and beverages. The Viking ba is quite the attraction. Pretzel app was enormous - about the size of a dinner plate. Dipping sauces were very good too. Cheese curds are a Wisconsin staple and these were very good. We all had the Scandinavian Cod entree. The creamed cabbage and red potatoes are a staple. All components were good. We sat in the bar area. It was active but not too crowded. There weren't people standing around our table. Recommended. read more

Stopped in for lunch on a very busy Saturday. The place was swamped with everyone from grandmas to toddlers. Luckily we landed a table near the beautiful wooden dragon, which is the bar. FYI I found out that the dragon will breathe a cloud of "smoke" with the press of a button. Nice. Like many restaurants, Viking Pub would probably prefer to hire more wait staff, but it's a worker's market. Luckily, no one was too annoyed that the food was a bit slow to appear after ordering. Once the food arrived, we could taste that the kitchen did not sacrifice quality. My Pesto Chicken sandwich was impressive. The grilled chicken was tender. I wish there were fewer sundried tomatoes and more pesto flavor. My husband ordered the open faced portobello sandwich, which surprised me since he is opposed to all mayo/sauces. He ate it, but probably would not order a second time. Each sandwich comes with your choice of: French fries, coleslaw or chips. The sides upgrade list was impressive, consisting of no less than seven options! The sweet potato fries were an excellent choice. We stopped here for lunch , before the shoe we were going to at the Opera House. The service was very welcoming. The Viking Burger was excellent. It was served with 3 thick slices of bacon and a cheese sauce. It came with fries. My wife ordered the Nordic wrap and it was just right. She said it tasted very good. A great friend and I do the Stoughton Art Walk annually and stopped here for some lunch. We sat at the sidewalk seating which at times was a little noisy because traffic on Main Street can be busy but it was really nicely shaded on a very toasty fall day. Our waitress Ashley G was definitely being kept busy but she was so friendly and checked on us several times. I had the Crimson and Clover IPA which was very good! It had a nice flavor without being overly hoppy. I also had the BLT which was really tasty--nice tomato, crispy bacon, and fresh lettuce on a well toasted multigrain bread. I forgot to take a picture but honestly it looked EXACTLY like the picture on the website which is really saying something. I can't speak for the interior because I didn't go inside. We checked this place out during Syttende Mai in downtown Stoughton. We luckily, snagged a table outside on the warm, sunny day near early evening. There is about 4 or 5 patio tables out front on the sidewalk for dining. Our friends had their two dogs with them so we couldn't eat inside. The brew pub provided dog bowls filled with ice cubed water for the pups which I thought was a nice touch. In addition, Inside is a Viking ship that is both a bar top area and focal point. I got a glimpse of it from the front entrance area because it was fairly busy inside. This places brews their own beer and offers unique twists on pub style food. This weekend they had a set menu offering Norwegian influences. After being seated, we waited over 10 minutes until we decided to go in and order drinks/app from the bar. We got their in house brews of Nordic Blonde and a wheat style beer. When the guys were gone, our server came. We let her know that we were ordering from the bar since no one came for awhile. She asked if we were seated by a hostess and we had been. She left and didn't come back at all. Later, we had to ask twice for her before she came back again for us to order food. It was well over 15 minutes that time. Our theory is that they were understaffed. When our appetizer came, the pretzel was the size of a melon, served warm and fluffy, and came with dipping sauces. The honey Dijon mustard sauce paired well! For my main dish, I ordered the Norwegian Turkey sandwich. It was sliced turkey, Swiss cheese with a jam and mayo combo which tasted great. It came with many nicely seasoned fries too. Others ordered the house burger (build your own) or Norwegian meatballs. Everything tasted good and gave a reasonable amount of food! It's possible to leave with left overs! I give this place a 4 for food and a 3 for service. read more

Restaurant quarter full during badger game, food has taken at least an hour to arrive. We ordered drinks and watched the bartender socialize at the bar while watching the game. A simple drink took 25 minutes to make. Waiting for food as we speak, we were never told the kitchen was backed up but have been overhearing the waitress tell other guest that it is. Went here on a Friday night to celebrate National Cheesecurd Day and to cross another place off our list of restaurants to try. The place was packed and there was a wait line for a table. We were lucky when we arrived that there were two spots at the bar, so that we could be served right away. Also, pleased that we could sit at the bar because I've been hearing about the Viking ship bar for a while, and really wanted to see it in person. Super cool design! We ended up trying a couple of their beers, the Viking Oktoberfest and Grumpy Granny Dunkel Weiss. Both were pretty good, but the Oktoberfest was our preferred. As for food, we had to order the cheesecurds. I will say that they were not my favorite and the ranch was a little too thick for my liking. The curds themselves didn't have a cheese pull at all, but they did have the thicker coating that I generally like. We asked for some honey mustard to go with them and that made them a little better, but I still want a cheese pull! We also ordered the Oslo burger. To us it was pretty much a butter burger but larger. The cucumber salad was more of a quick pickle which added a helpful acidity. Given how busy they were we were very impressed by the speed of the kitchen. They got the food out super quick, to the point that the bar tender didn't even realize we had gotten our food until we were partway through eating it. Overall, fun concept for a restaurant. Delicious food, cold beer, and friendly service all in a really cool pub. I ate here last week with my husband and dad while we were visiting. The pub has a lot of detailed woodwork and metal work including a bar that is a replica of a wooden Viking longboat complete with a dragon head that puts smoke out of its nose. Our server told us that her family owns the pub and did the wood work themselves, wow, what talent! We started with two beer, I had the tripel, both beers were delicious. Our appetizer was cheese curds, because when you're in Wisconsin you have to try some fresh, local cheese curds! The three of us split the Scandanavian cod dinner and a burger. Let me just say that I do not really like cabbage, but their cabbage was cooked perfectly and had a sauce that was addictively good! The burger was crisp yet juicy and cheesy. For dessert we split the chocolate lava cake. It was hot, chocolaty, and delicious! Rating from an F to an A+++ I give it an A+++! read more

Friday was our first time trying this establishment. [[HIGHLIGHT]]You walk in and see the viking ship and wow!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated in the upper area, which was quieter than the bar area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Our waitress was very prompt and pleasant, and knew the menu well. We started off with the deep fried green beans with ligonberry sauce. Both were a pleasant surprise. Since we're not beer drinkers, we chose our fave cocktails which were done quite nicely (for a brew pub :) ). Our entrees came and I had chosen the Friday fish special which was perfectly done and came with a rye bread crumbled topping. Delish! Served over sauteed cabbage with baby red potatoes. The sauce that was used on the cabbage was almost like a tartar sauce but so much better! My hubby had the prime rib sandwich, which he said was the perfect portion. We ended the meal with their Lava cake with vanilla ice cream. Again, it was perfect! We plan to return to this brew pub for the food!! read more

All weekend, during our visit to WI, I had hoped to go to a Norwegian restaurant, or at least a Scandinavian-themed one, to find Norwegian meatballs like my mama made all throughout my childhood.    I'd already seen photos on Yelp of the Viking ship shaped bar, but it's still a sight to behold upon entering.  We, of course, took a photo in front of the dragon (while smoked poured out of its mouth).  I loved the Norwegian flag on the wall and the Viking art.  Felt right at home. ;)   I ordered a flight, which I believe was $6 for 4 samples.  I believe they were all brewed in-house.  They were good, but none of them really stood out.   The cheese curds weren't the best I've tried in WI, but they hit the spot.  I'll eat any cheese, any time.   I ordered a half-order Norwegian meatball dinner special.  Good call - the full would have been huge! A half order consists of a huge mound of mashed potatoes (very good!), topped with 2 good-sized meatballs (not as large as the waiter made them out to be), a salty roll, lingonberry jam, coleslaw and butter.  I was SO ready to give those meatballs a taste test to see if my mom's were better.    I have to say, the meatballs themselves were pretty good, not like mom's though.  I wasn't a fan of the gravy only because it wasn't mom's.  That doesn't mean it was bad though!  I just grew up with a different recipe.  My mom passed away a year ago, and she hadn't made Norwegian meatballs in many years because she was sick.  I was hoping for that nostalgic experience from my childhood.    I do recommend trying the Norwegian meatballs, since most people have never tried them.  Swedish meatballs always get the spotlight (these are different than Swedish meatballs).   My husband said his burger was sort of dry, and nothing special.  But we still had a good experience and glad we came! read more

Something was very off on this October Sunday early evening. We were greeted with no smile or eye contact by the hostess. Then we were ignored for at least five minutes before someone came over to ask if our server had been to our table yet. Then the server still didn't come to our booth. What's even weirder is that the owner was sitting at the bar the whole time we were there. After we gave him a look, he got up off his stool and said something to the server, who was sitting in plain view in the back room. Finally, the server came over, and without a smile or any sort of friendly acknowledgement, took our order. The food was fine -- nothing to get excited about, but not bad. The women's room was out of order, which I found out from another apparently seriously depressed employee when I went for the door handle. I really needed the bathroom, so I asked the owner if there was a men's room I could use instead. He told me, without apology or any apparent concern, that the men's room wasn't functional either. He did let me know that I could go down to the basement and use the facilities there. (Filthy, but did the trick.) As we were leaving, the hostess was sweeping up, and just said a curt, "Excuse me" as she tried to sweep around our legs. No one thanked us for coming or seemed to care one way or another that we had just spent money in their restaurant. Will never go back, obviously. We finally got around to trying the Brew Pub! It gets busy fast; so plan accordingly. They get your order in fast and the food comes out even faster! They brew their own beer (obviously), and have an amazing sampler for only $6! My husband loved that he was able to try a little of everything! We each got a fish special, he got the shrimp and I got the fried fish. They were all so delicious down to the roll and homemade Tatar sauce! The prices here are unbeatable! I wouldn't bring a group over 6; just seems too cramped to fit everyone in there. read more

Yummm!! We ordered the Nordic wrap, side salad with ranch, sriracha chicken bites, and the Asiago chicken alfredo, no broccoli. We are so used to having our order messed up (by other restaurants) lately that it was a nice relief to have everything be accurate. They have an area for take out orders just inside the breezeway so you don't have to go all the way in to the restaurant. I super appreciate that, especially as we work our way through covid. Staff was friendly, order was done quick, and the price was reasonable for what we got. The sriracha chicken bites were my favorite thing of the whole order and I'd go back just for these. read more

I'll say up front that I really want to like this place because it has so much going for it. Generally everything here is good, but I've had a couple experiences that have really soured me to coming here with a group larger than two people. The beer is pretty solid - especially for a small, independent brew pub that doesn't distribute anywhere except at their own restaurant. If you sit at the bar, which has a pretty cool dragon at one end that even breathes smoke, I've never had a bad experience. I've sat at a table maybe 5 times and two of those times food has taken well over an hour after ordering. One time it wasn't what we ordered and seemed like it had been sitting under a heat lamp most of the time we were waiting for it. The real bummer here is that nobody even came by either time to let us know we hadn't been forgotten about or that our food was just taking longer than planned. It didn't really make us feel like they cared that we'd come in to spend our money with people who hadn't been there before. My pro tip: sit at the bar, go with as small of a group as possible, and go when it isn't a traditionally busy time of day. read more

Wow! We stopped in on a whim. Great beer, great food. I came for the beer and was not disappointed. Had a flight and left with 16 z of Hilda's Wild and French Fried Cutie. My son has Nordic pale. I visited Viking Brew Pub on Saturday, 4/9. I visit craft breweries as a hobby (or potential cry for help). It is located on a busy street across from city hall, but I was able to find parking easily. I was greeted quickly upon entering and given the option for table or bar, which is shaped like a Viking ship with an option to thrill the kids by expelling smoke from the mouth of the dragon head reaching upwards from the bow. My server/bartender Eric was very friendly and took my flight order, as well as food order. The establishment was clean, had fitting decor and was busy with patrons, many with children. Despite the busyness, it was not loud nor felt chaotic. My flight came quickly & I picked selections of wheat, stout, ale and saison. I found each one good and noted a smoothness of each one on my palate. I was also provided tastes of two others including a sour & a Belgian quad. Both good and I wasn't charged for a small taste. I think my flight of four was $7, cheaper than the standard at most breweries. My food, consisting of the house burger & cheese curds were good; the burger had two patties & was a little too big for a sitting. I liked that I could choose among a selections of cheeses & upgrade my side if I wanted. The meal came just as I ordered it and was good; everything came out quickly and cooked well. Additionally, I appreciated Eric's service and good humor. He attended to my needs quickly with good cheer. One thing I should note is that their Wi-Fi was awful. Eric informed me that some people get it while others do not. I did not, despite multiple tries. He also mentioned that the establishment was a former bank which may explain the issues. I don't know. I have been to a variety of old buildings with functional Wi-Fi. Another thing for me is that they lacked any brewery stickers which I collect. Eric apologized and stated that they haven't ordered any merch in a while. They did have growlers with their logo available. Last, I noticed that the menu was very generic in pub style foods. Nothing caught my eye as unique or not first fried before plating. As it's a cool Viking theme, how about some Norwegian, Icelandic or Scandinavian dishes? Even an appetizer of herring or a dish with lingonberry sauce would help sell the motif. I did appreciate the service and its unique decor & would recommend a visit. read more

We will never go back there again. We have been loyal customers for 10 years but never again. There were a number of things tonight that made our visit unpleasant (i.e. waited over 45 minutes for the food, finally we had to ask if we could at least get our salad and there seemed to be some reluctance to even do that; when asked how it was we gave our complaints and the person just said oh thanks for telling me and walked away) but the worst thing was the price on the receipt was more than the price on the menu, when we pointed this out they argued with us. I'm sorry, you cannot put a price on the menu and then charge a different price without warning or explanation. What happened to the Viking Brew Pub? I don't know if it's under new management or what but that was the worst customer service ever. Never. Again. read more

This unique bar on Stoughton's Main Street has a good selection of rotating craft beers. They have a Friday Fish Fry special, but the breading is heavy with not much seasoning or flavor. The Norwegian Meatballs are large and served over mashed potatoes with a rich gravy, very good! Stopped in today after a long day touring the area. I ordered the Hilda Smash and my wife had the Ahi Berry Bliss salad. My burger was indescribably good, with just the right amount of heat with the jalapeños and ghost peppers. All the flavors complemented each other to make a most satisfying taste sensation. Same with my wife's salad entree. Extremely flavorful ahi paired with candied pecans, feta cheese and berries. When in the area again, we'll definitely be back! read more
