Went to Stalzy's, this morning and picked up 2# of corned beef. The person waiting on me went to the back of the store to slice and package it. I couldn't really see it until I got home, and unwrapped it. It was so fatty that, after I trimmed it, it was at least 1/2 fat, or 1 pound of fat, and 1 pound of fatty slices. Not happy. Fatty corned beef, I was just passing through Madison and figured I would give it a try. They had a lot of workers but not much food.

Was looking for a good corned beef sandwich and got a fatty sandwich. Was also looking for soup or bagels and was told they had none.

Seems now they stopped serving breakfast. I picked up a half wheat bread. That was excellent. Bialys was flavorful. Butter bread was ok. I got a potato salad, but didn't like it at all. Taste was off. Overall I will return only to get more bread. read more

During covid we got takeout from here but I wanted to try the dine-in experience. We stopped on a Friday evening and it was relatively quiet. The workers were all very helpful and friendly. We ordered the Reuben with pastrami and the smoked salmon sandwich. Both came with chips. And I got a Hamm's beer too! The sandwiches were both $15 which these days seems the new normal. The wait was not too long. Both sandwiches were very delicious with a good portion of the main ingredients. The bread was top notch. Finally visited and am thoroughly disappointed. I hate leaving bad reviews, but this is Not a deli. I ordered a "Rachel" sandwich, which is corned beef with Swiss, and coleslaw. First, I asked to taste the coleslaw because I dislike sweet ones. This counter person brought me a fork with 3! tiny slivers of cabbage on it. Huh??? The "sample" didn't even cover a quarter of the plastic fork. Anyway, it was nicely vinegared, so I ordered the sandwich. I specifically asked if they had deckel (fatty) corned beef. The counter person went in the back to ask; came back and said yes. Nowhere on the menu did this say the meat was grilled. If it had, I would have asked for it Not to be! They grilled all of the lovely and tasty fat fat right out of the deckel and chopped it finely!!! WTAF?!? Also, we were watching a baker working with a large batch of freshly made bread dough on a table about 10 feet behind the counter. I saw this guy touch his face 3 or 4 times while he was working the dough! Not only that, but he was called over to the register to change the receipt tape and, after handling the machine all over and inserting the new roll of paper, went Directly back to working the dough!! We arrived, by coincidence, on the night they announced the restaurant was closing. Though there was mention of the Deli part still open to walk-in customers. The staff was super friendly and kind as they turned away clients... turns out we were most likely the last to be seated that night. They told those arriving after us, that they had run out of food. Our meal did not live up to previous visits. Compared to previous visits, our sandwiches were very light on meat, I guess that parallels the running out of food situation. Tried them at a festival. The line was so long. They didn't hand out tickets, and people that went after me and paid totally cut and took sandwiches first before their turn. My only feedback going forward is get cheap numbers or tickets to make people be nice and wait their turn in line so there doesn't end up being a fistfight over a brisket sandwich. Lol But once I got the sandwich, WOW. I had their french onion braised brisket. Most tender and best flavored brisket I had ever had. The portion size was so generous you could've totally split this with someone else. I also had to eat part of it with a fork, so it's not some thing you can pick up with your hand but it is so delicious and worth it. Pretty good value also for 14 bucks. This is a cool place! I just picked up a sandwich to go but there is a great dining area. I love the seating at the old school counter table. I ordered the BLT. There are lots of good looking sandwiches on the menu. It took about 15 minutes for them to make it. The BLT was great! I'm picky when it comes to bacon but I was impressed. The bacon was well cooked and tasty. They paired the sandwich with a pickle and amazing sea salt kettle chips. Overall a great atmosphere, friendly staff, and great BLTs. This spot was a great breakfast experience! I was so pleasantly surprised with my first impression! Staff was super friendly and helpful with menu items. I got nostalgic seeing the creamed pickled herring and red beets . My great grandma was Czechoslovakian and those memories came back with the quickness seeing some of their deli items. We've been trying to stop back at Stalzy's for a few years now, we used to live in the neighborhood and come by all the time. They closed due to an unfortunate fire and then the pandemic hit. We finally made it back today for brunch. If this place isn't at the top of your brunch spots to visit, you need to add it to your list. Greeted by friendly staff members, you place your order at the counter and seat yourself. There are plenty of brunch and lunch options here, we had the brisket hash and Brooklyn breakfast sandwich, and two bloodies of course! The sandwich was hot, pastrami flavorful, and the egg runny, just how you want on a breakfast sand. Every sandwich here hits the mark with excellent baked bread and perfectly sliced deli meats. Quality has gone downhill since the fire & pandemic seemingly in inverse relation to the price. People don't seem to mind though, it's always packed. Had a $17(!) corned beef sandwich today and it was chewy, the meat had the smell of old deli meat about to turn, & the bread was stale and crumbly. My wife had a club sandwich (also overpriced) that was merely OK. The meat used to be of a much higher quality when it first opened. We went there all the time. Now it's not worth it. Some of their other menu items are better (more ingredients mask the quality?) & I still enjoy their breakfast items. It's hard to mess up breakfast. Service is so-so. Staff seems annoyed to have to interact with the customers but they're not outright rude. read more

Worst takeout experience so far, and we have been doing a lot of takeout over the last year. In all honesty, this is the closest I have ever been to giving a one star review. They get two stars because I could tell that the staff felt really bad for how the whole process went. We ordered a turkey pastrami reuben for pickup on St. Patrick's Day. Now this was probably a mistake as they were experiencing very large numbers of orders, however this was not made known through their order system online. I scheduled my order for pickup at 5:05pm and when I arrived and called, they said that they were running a little behind. That wasn't a problem and I asked how long they thought the wait would be. I was told 30 minutes, so I said I would go pick up something else and come back. When I came back, I called again and told them where my car was parked and they said that they would bring the order out. So I waited, and waited, and waited. Finally I went into the deli to ask what was going on with my order. The whole street was also full of cars and their was a line outside the deli that went down the block. When I went inside my order seemed to be ready and sitting on the table, but no one had brought it out to me. I finally got my food at 6:40pm when my pickup time was 5:05pm. This seems like a little too long for just a sandwich and chips. As for the reuben itself, they get points for the amount of turkey pastrami that was on the sandwich and the meat itself was actually pretty good. However, overall the sandwich was quite greasy and wet. I understand the idea was to give a lot of meat, but the sandwich didn't balance flavors well. The bread just didn't seem to hold up to the moisture of the sandwich and so it was all kind of mushy texture, which I feel bad saying because I had high hopes. This combined with the price of the sandwich, $13 for the sandwich and some chips, didn't make this the most satisfying takeout experience. I really, really was wishing that the sandwich would have been better after the amount of time it took to get it, but who knows how long it was sitting on the table. I've been looking for an East Coast deli in Madison ever since I moved back a couple of years ago. Stalzy's is the place! Atmosphere is very casual, place is clean. Not a ton of seating but people cycled in and out in a timely fashion. Food was wonderful. The broth in the matzoh ball soup was rich and exquisite. Went to Stalzy's to pick up a sammie for lunch today for the first time. It will absolutely be the last. I ordered a pastrami Reuben to go. Get home (a couple blocks away), and unwrap it. Mushy bread. Open it up to see it, a ton of fat. Now, I'm not talking the silky, well cooked fat that you don't mind eating. This was undercooked rubber. Pull all of it off the meat, and there's not much meat left. Take a bite, and the whole piece of meat pulls out of the sandwich, because it's not correctly cooked. That was, without a doubt, the crappiest sammie I've ever had. Threw half of it away. And almost $15 for just the freaking sandwich! Save your money. You will be disappointed. read more

A great place to get food without any wait to speak of, you can buy fresh loaves of bread and I've seen many people come in for picnic sandwich making supplies- This 5 star review is for the Challah French Toast! My first time and last time ever for Stalzy's. I wanted a Reuben sandwich from a real deli. The corned beef was dry and so tough it was impossible to chew. I explained to the "waitress" the quality of the meat rendered the sandwich inedible. He response was "Well, that's what we have." Not "I'm sorry", "let me check with the cook", "what can I do for you". She had zero interest the quality of the food, or in my satisfaction. $16 lesson learned. First time with my friends. They had some type of Rachael. They said it was yummy but very messy. I had the Lox sandwich. Came with chips and a pickle. Sandwich was huge. Recently though, I got take out and tried their Reuben, Curry/garlic chips, potato salad, and sourdough bread. All were very good. If possible, I would give them a 4.5 out of 5. Nothing absolutely wowed me to push this to a 5, but this was still better than just a normal 4. The Reuben had good flavor, but could have used a little more kraut and corned beef. The potato salad was light and delicious. The chips were unique and I liked them a lot. The sourdough was solid. Overall, I had a good experience and would definitely recommend Stalzy's. You can't get much better when you are in the mood for a high-quality sandwich. I ordered the special hot roast beef sandwich with horseradish sauce. It was perfect. Tender, high quality roast beef with great sauce. The bun may have stolen the show, it was an incredible carraway roll. Hard to make a great sandwich without good bread, and Stalzy's always nails it on the bread. Only part of the meal I wasn't a fan of was the sweet & sour coleslaw on the side. I love Stalzy's sandwiches and am basically addicted to their chocolate/butterscotch bars, so I had been eager to try their Friday fish fry and it did not disappoint! You get a choice of walleye or beer battered perch (they used Hamm's when we were there, not sure if they switch it up) and a choice of potato pancakes or German potato salad. I went with the walleye, my husband the perch and both were perfectly cooked and battered. The batter on the perch was particularly excellent - I swear you could taste the beer. The potato pancakes were a nice change of pace instead of the usual fish fry potato options, but they are definitely filling! They also bring out a relish tray with assorted breads prior to the entrees. I thought the $16 price was very reasonable.
