I visited Batch from out of town recently, and after trying their pastries concurred that I could absolutely move to Madison with this kind of bakery around. It's definitely a storefront with no seating, but if you don't mind standing there's an area where you could eat at a counter. I arrived at 9am on a Sunday and by the time I finished ordering, a line had formed out the door. I would definitely recommend getting here early; however, it's also the kind of place where you can't go wrong with anything you order. After a lot of waffling, I ordered the lemon currant scone, peach muffin, and ham and Gruyère bun. The scone was super buttery with a crunchy exterior and soft interior, with the most lovely glaze and lemon zest throughout. It definitely screamed summer. The peach muffin was super light and airy, and not at all too sweet. The crunchy cinnamon topping was absolute perfection and brought the perfect texture contrast. I really enjoyed the bun, which was like a mini sourdough loaf. I do think there could have been a bit more ham, but the caramelized onions throughout made sure that every bite was super flavorful. Next time I'm in town, you better believe Batch will be my first stop! read more

I missed so much the trilayer lemon cake from Manna's Cafe that I bought their cookbook. While just as flavorful as my memory, I'm no baker and the cakes looked like sh*t. Thankfully BATCH BAKEHOUSE makes a lovely one complete with fanciful script. it's now our go-to for birthdays. Every single thing on their menu is yummy-for-your-tummy. Delicious Pastries and Amazing Staff Batch Bakehouse is easily one of my favorite spots in Madison. Everything I've tried has been so fresh and flavorful, from the croissants to the cinnamon rolls. The pastries are buttery, light, and have the perfect balance of sweetness. You can really tell everything is made with care. The staff is always friendly and helpful, even when the place is busy, and the atmosphere is so warm and inviting. It's hard to walk out with just one thing because everything in the case looks incredible. Parking can be a little tricky since it's street parking, but it's absolutely worth it. Batch is my go to for mornings when I want to treat myself or grab something special to share. My job use to order for the office once a month and it was always my favorite day. read more

I did a lot of research for a place to make my wife's birthday cake. After much deliberation, I chose Batch Bakehouse. The reviews were great and the photos very appetizing. Unfortunately, reality kicked me in the face and disappointment laughed in the corner as I cut into the $50 pastry. Since when does a multi-layer cake have way more frosting than cake? The frosting between the three layers was as thick as the cake layers themselves. Add to that the top and side frosting, and you end up with a big ball of sweetened butter. Not pleasant. Not even in the vicinity of pleasant. The buttercream was okay, but I ordered a cake, not a bucket of frosting. Don't ask me what the cake tasted like, I couldn't tell you as there wasn't enough of it to get a good taste. Great service and a nice shop, but a very disappointing first experience. I don't think it's clear from their website or Yelp - but this place has NO seating. However, they do have a lovely and wide variety of individual baked goods AND if you get coffee at the business next door you can bring your baked good over there and eat it in their coffee shop. The staff was friendly, and the baked good I bought was delicious (if maybe a touch too sweet for my taste). I really wish this spot would have just a lil table or two - and let folks bring a beverage from next door. Maybe a preference, maybe a licensing thing. "Bakehouse" can mean a lot of things (e.g. a Haitian bakehouse is completely different). I guess in Madison it means 'we have delicious sweets but no seats'. I would come back. read more

First time ordering a cake from Batch, usually drop in for pastries or smaller deserts. We ordered the custom cake with chocolate cake and strawberry buttercream. The ordering process was super simple online and order was ready exactly when they said it would be. The cake turned out beautiful. I loved all the ways you could customize the fillings, toppings, and writing. I do wish there was a way to add writing on top of the chocolate ganache drizzle but it still turned out great! The cake itself was delicious. It's more of a thicker, dense cake if that's your preference. The frosting was THE BEST. It was buttercream but not too sweet which I really appreciated. It had a very natural strawberry flavor, not the fake strawberry flavor that sometimes comes out. read more

This might be one of my favorite spots in Madison. I love everything about it, especially the amazing smells when I walk in. Everyone behind the counter is SO friendly. Don't be afraid of a line outside, it moves fast. As you approach your turn, make sure you snake the line around to the very end of the case so you don't miss apple cake or a new fun cookie or anything else that is closer to the wall. Take your time! We understand. Not sure what to get? The pastries with ham and Gruyère are a perfect snack to munch on walking back to your car. I think the decorated sugar cookies are gorgeous but I'm such a snobby fan of frosted sugar cookies that at that price point I've been afraid to try them for fear of being disappointed. I've tried a lot of different things though and have yet to be disappointed so I should throw caution to the wind. Next up: bread. Scali bread to be precise. Batch no longer delivers to Willy west so when I make it down here I usually have to buy 2-3 loaves to put in the freezer. They put them in freezer bags for me and tie them right up - unless they are too warm yet (swoon) and they just tuck the twisty tie in the bag. I'm a fan of the regular scali loaf but have subbed in the pan loaf at times and it's the same fantastic loaf of bread. Go home and make grilled cheese with it and thank me later. Last but certainly not least - the shortie. You'll never pick just one so just get 5. This is the absolute most perfect little bite of happiness I've ever had. In town visiting our daughter and I always make a point to try local bakeries. I was absolutely blown away by how good the laminated pastries were. After queuing up for Arsicault in San Francisco and finding that unbelievably delicious, I didn't think I'd be getting an equally good bite in Madison. But it was. I had the ham and Gruyère croissant - every bite delicious. My son had the morning bun and neither of us could figure out how the pecans were cooked so perfectly without being burnt. These two pastries were works of art. Service was swift and the ambiance was fine - it's take out, so I just want clean and friendly - both were on point. We will be back again and again! read more

This is the best bakery in Madison. I ordered a dark chocolate bourbon pecan pie for thanksgiving. It was excellent, with a tonne of pecan. Frangipane was another excellent item. Mini butter cake with cherry cream cheese was good too. San martino cake was really good as well. It tasted close to a plum cake, but much denser. We have stopped here several times over the years and have never been disappointed. Today I stopped in for a birthday treat and ended up leaving with a box full. I like that I can get a slice of cake vs having to buy a whole cake. What we enjoyed over the next few days was a slice of German chocolate cake which was moist and delicious with the nuts, Carmel and coconut frosting. A slice of triple Chocolate cake was rich yet delicious with chocolate cake and a couple different chocolate frostings. A salted Carmel Brownie was delicious and enough to share. A cherry cheesecake tart was tasty but I wish there could of been 3 cherries in the tart instead of 2 but it worked to split it in half and share it. The Russian tea cake cookie was as expected to taste. The frosted sugar cookie tasted better than expected. It was decorated and iced beautifully and was soft yet had a crispness-perfect. And the little bourbon pecan pie was awesome. I would buy a whole sized pie of that one. The only bad part about these birthday treats for the week was the scale. But even that was not as bad as it could have been. Have your cake and eat it too...just don't eat anything else. read more

Batch is my favorite for pastries. Specifically they rock at cini minis, chocolate croissants and their fruit danishes. I haven't tried much else though to be honest. What I like about batch is they have great flavor and texture and I don't feel weighed down by their pastries the way I do with far Breton (no shade, that place is solid too if you only want to eat one pastry ). Also the chocolate they put in their croissants may not look like much but it's just the best. Not that hard waxy chocolate nugget that other places try to stick in there. This was our first time trying this bakery and I must say, wonderful so far!!! My husband gets my carrot cake for my birthday every year and our other bakery was not an option this year. My coworker has been raving about Batch Bakehouse for years, but I never take him too seriously because his recommendations are often hit or miss. Well, I finally stopped by 2 months ago and have been a fan ever since! I can tell Batch is well loved by the Madison community because there's been a long line out the door every time I've visited. They have a large assortment of baked goods, but you'll be left with limited pickings if you show up by noon. My personal favorite is the ham and gruyere cheese croissant. The first time I saw it, I was put off by the price and told myself "this better be the best croissant I've ever tasted". It was! One of the flakiest croissants I've ever had, filled with delicious warm goodies inside. I'm salivating just writing this. They've also got a delicious pumpkin cookie; it's honestly more like a mini cake but you can really taste the pumpkin, and it's one of my partner's favorite things to order. Overall, I love Batch Bakehouse! They're on the pricier side, but they've got some delicious treasures that make me keep going back! read more

This is hands down my FAVORITE bakery in Madison! You will not be disappointed any anything they make here...my most favorite is their key lime pie , it's so rich and smooth and just a great dessert! I needed focaccia for some special sandwiches and the Batch Bakehouse makes focaccia. At 8AM SAT AM there were about a dozen people in line waiting for them to open. The focaccia was still warm from the oven and I bought 3 round loaves. I was not expecting round loaves because focaccia as I know it is prepared in a rectangular sheet pan which is perfect for making sandwiches. That aside it had a beautifully thin and chewy crust and was tender and light inside. Although it was a challenge turning the round, flatish loaves into sandwiches for 18 it worked out well.
