Date of visit: January 25, 2026 I was looking for a little pick me up before grabbing breakfast and I noticed that Cargo Coffee East was just a couple blocks down from where we were staying at the Hotel Indigo. Despite the frigid temperatures, I braved the cold for a quite good peppermint mocha. The place definitely has a hipster vibe to it, I would not have been surprised if someone yelled "Suit!" at me as I entered or exited! Staff were not the friendliest, and the extra table between the cashier and you made it hard for her to hear me, and she was clearly annoyed at having to ask me to repeat myself and didn't ask me if I wanted a receipt, either. WiFi was solid and there was a fair amount of space to spread out, but definitely didn't give me the warm fuzzies and I would seek out other coffee the next time I am in the area. read more

Continuing alphabet series representing 2021 is C is for Cargo Coffee East. This was on my September 2021 Chicago/Wisconsin. Wisconsin was mainly Milwaukee (2 nights). We left Milwaukee on Sunday, 9/5/21, and I wanted to see Madison for a few hours before heading back to Chicago to return the Turo rental car and fly out of O'Hare. We went straight to downtown and ate at Cargo Coffee East for breakfast. I had an iced coffee and a Classic Bagel sandwich, which is avocado & cream cheese, may have added a meat on there too, I can't tell, but I remember the sandwich was delicious as was the coffee. It's a cutely decorated place with various geographic decor along with clocks like being at a train station. There is a 2nd level balcony for sitting above. Great spot heading into the heart of downtown Madison and this is a place you definitely don't want to skip out on. The coffee shop is spacious and inviting and the crew behind the counter keeps things moving even when things get busy. I've been here a few times now and when visiting Madison it certainly is one of my go-to spots. The coffee is always good and last night I treated myself to a decaf maple latte and a peanut butter cookie that can only be described as magical. Today, I went for a cup of coffee, which I love that they serve in a mug while your sitting within the shop, and the classic bagel which comes with avocado, tomato and cream cheese served on an everything bagel; a real winner. Last night while here there was some live music being played and today my heart is warmed by seeing some grassroots political campaigning kicking off from the coffee shop, as well. A community gem sort of place. Highly recommend checking out Cargo Coffee next time you are looking for a great cup of coffee in the Madison area. read more

The sweet and spicy ham&cheese croissant was their special for the month and it was just okay, I appreciate the flakiness of the croissant! I just wish it was a little bit more spicy. I came here to study, and the vibes were amazing. The parking was easy because theres a little garage, but theres also street parking around. I got a decaf hazelnut latte with soy milk, and it was about $7.50 with tax. I don't usually drink coffee so I'm not sure how this compares to other cafes. The workers were really nice! Wow! Had a wonderful coffee meet up here this afternoon! Plenty of open tables and lots of space between tables so it didn't feel crowded like a typical coffee shop. I really like the food and drink options here, plus they do a lot for the community. The servers are always pleasant and willing to ask questions about the menu. I really like working here remotely during the day sometimes, although I do wish it had a slightly cozier vibe versus the very business-y / industrial vibe. I've been to this Cargo location more times than I can count, and I've always had a great experience. Both the Mango Green Smoothie (pictured) and the Red Berry Smoothie are sensational. If I'm not getting a smoothie, you can catch me with a chai latte. And Cargo's are delicious -- not too sweet, not too much spice. The best part about Cargo is the ambiance. There's so much seating and it's a good mix of productive work spaces and comfy areas to sit down with a book or the newspaper. They have an elevated seating area that looks out over the rest of the coffee shop, which is really cool (but it is important to note that there are only stairs to access this part, no elevator). Also, the fact that they've got a printer there is a huge plus. Service has always been great and the staff is really friendly. If you're anything like me, make sure to grab a punch card because after you make your first trip to Cargo, you'll certainly be returning again...and again...and again. read more

Got there at 8:50pm and it says they close at 9. I'm usually not this type of customer but I was running late and I promised a friend we'd go before we went to see the Christmas lights. I was flying down east wash from the mall area around 8:35pm. I sat at the drive thru window while everyone watched me. Finally someone came (before 9, 8:54) saying they were closed. I asked if they close at 9 to which she replied yes. We didn't get served and we just wanted hot chocolate. If you close at 9, you close at 9. Waste of my time thank you read more

I love this cargo coffee. The vibe and ambiance are perfect for settling in for work, writing, chatting with friends, or gathering together to listen to live music (check out their schedule it's free and worth it). I love the ambience here. There's a comfy couch and armchair, and all the other seating options are your basic tables and chairs. There's even this cool indoor upstairs area with tables and chairs that overlooks the rest of the shop. We didn't go through the drive-thru but that is a perk I will use in the future and despite cars going through constantly, we still got our drinks and pastries quickly. For parking, there's a nearby covered garage and free street parking. This is a dog-friendly coffeeshop so don't be alarmed when you see people bring in their dogs (on leashes of course). I'm so excited that I found a coffeeshop in Madison that uses powder instead of syrup in their vanilla lattes. Powder is far superior but it's very rare to find a place that uses it (besides the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf chain, which it turns out does not have locations in Wisconsin). Their iced vanilla latte (my typical go-to) reminded me so much of the one my favorite coffeeshop in my hometown makes; I never thought coffee could make me so nostalgic! My friend got their drip coffee and said it was good too. You have the option to take your food/drinks to go or get reusable tableware. The croissants and danishes are provided by Madison Sourdough, while the muffins and other baked goods are made in-house. We got a blueberry danish and an almond croissant (I ate that croissant so fast I didn't even have time to take a picture). They were so so good. You can really tell that Madison Sourdough makes and laminates their croissant dough themselves instead of buying it (most bakeries buy their croissant dough) which makes such a huge difference. You can really feel the buttery texture in the air pockets between the dough, instead of it being all dried up. So I'm glad that Cargo Coffee gets their danishes and croissants from Madison Sourdough - solid choice! - The blueberry danish had cream cheese frosting in the middle topped with a blueberry compote. The cream cheese frosting really made it. - The almond croissant was my favorite. It wasn't too sweet and had the perfect amount of filling, and of course had your obligatory toasted almonds on top. The barista was very pleasant and nice. They were wearing a Fall Out Boy shirt which immediately gave me good vibes, and was happy to answer our questions about the pastries. Cargo coffee has been a great place to get out of the apartment to study during covid. There is outdoor seating and the indoor seating is very well spaced out. Masks are required for moving between tables. There is also a glass at the checkout counter for safety but it does make it quite hard to hear and speak to the staff. You might find yourself yelling your order. The ambiance is great with plenty of light flooding in through the huge windows out front. But I truly love coming here to get work done! I am not a big coffee drinker but have heard great things about their coffee. Their decaf and tea drinks are delicious and very well-priced, especially being so close to the Capitol. I would not come here for the pastries though. They are pretty average and often dull in texture. They do have old pastries from previous days for cheap so if you're just looking for a munchy with your coffee that might be a good idea for you. One day I decided to get lunch there and the Cheddar BLT salad was delicious. It was mostly cheese and bacon though with very little greens however. Cargo is a cool little cafe with plenty of space for working and a cool theme. Still, their coffee is just so/so, and there are better places in town for sure if you are just looking for a drink. Here's my thoughts: 1) The space is probably the best part of Cargo Coffee. They have tons and tons of tables (I can't see it ever filling up!), a pleasant atmosphere, and while they could have more power outlets, you can usually find one. The map ont he wall is particularly unique and cool. 2) The coffee is just so/so. Despite having a sign that says "we will make any drink," and despite having V60s, they said they couldn't make me a pour-over. The regular coffee tastes like it had been sitting around a long time (it actually had, "9:30" was written on the machine and it was after 11:30 when I arrived). 3) Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly enough (even with not wanting to make the drink I wanted), and they have a ton of food too. read more

After a long morning at the Madison Farmers Market, Cargo was a breath of fresh air. Our family has a connection with airplanes so the sign out front completely caught our attention. We didn't know what to expect as we were traveling in from Ohio but we were so glad we stumbled upon Cargo! Inside is an adorably designed travel themed shop with two stories. It is clean, bright and perfect for a coffee date. The top floor is perfect for a college student to relax and study. The prices are fair, maybe a little on the high end. A green smoothie was shy of $5 but the portion was large! And the taste, oh man! Sometimes with the green drinks, you are taking a gamble but I'm so glad I did! The banana and mango fit perfectly with the spinach and cider. My husband asked for a caramel macchiato which was not on the menu. The lady asked, "Starbucks or traditional?" He was so happy she knew the traditional way. He enjoyed his macch. There is a nice patio out front and plenty of space inside. Oh, and they serve a few beers. 2nd time this happened.... the lid pops off the to-go cup and the hot drink spills when I try to lift it out of the cup holder in my car. First time I was still in the drive thru and the staff said "oh yea, sorry. Our lids don't fit well." This time the medium extra chai dirty chai with oat milk ($6 drink!) spilled all over my files as I was getting out of the car and tried to lift the cup I called and the smug guy who answered said they did have bad lids but this is usually because customers squeeze the cup too hard. (Like I'm an idiot?) Funny how it has NEVER happened when I get to-go hot drinks from any of the other great coffee shops in Madison. read more

I come to Cargo Coffee often as I live nearby. The coffee and teas are excellent and they have a punch card system with which I have gotten many free drinks. If this review were only about the drinks it would be 5/5. This review is a 3/5 because of the avocado toast. Multiple times I have ordered avocado toast and had it come out with brown spots. When I bring it back up, the servers will usually swap it out for non-browned avocados but it's a bit of a hassle and if it's busy, I always feel bad. I may be a picky avocado toast eater but others who are also picky about their avocado, know it may not meet your standards. read more

The coffee here is good but not great as some of the other specialty coffee shops in the area and their food is good as well. What makes them stand out is their staff and drive thru for me. I usually get the same thing at this particular Cargo Coffee. It's always a medium soy latte. It's pretty consistent. No complaints about it. I'm reliable in terms of what espresso drink I will order at any given time. One time, I ordered a smoothie. It was a Mango Green smoothie, or something along those lines. It was good except for the pieces of spinach that was unblended. It's not really a pleasing experience having spinach stuck in your teeth. Especially not after you've gotten your teeth cleaned upstairs at the dentist. The space is really cool. I think there are lots of seating options. You can find outlets for your electronics. The only downside about the space is that noise carries. One time I went, it was quiet, except for this one dude who was blabbing on the phone. I think everyone heard his conversation. read more

This place is awesome. The coffee is great as is the food. My wife only gets whole bean coffee from here for home use. I've never had one of the fancy coffee drinks but they sell a ton. The tables out front are nice. Attached parking garage is really nice in the winter and when it is raining. Bathrooms are always clean. The main thing though is the people. I love this coffee shop! Great coffee at prices that are more affordable than many other coffee shops. I'm not normally a fan of the food at coffee shops, but Cargo has a really nice breakfast burrito and a wide selection of muffins. If you have the time to stay at the cafe and sit down with your coffee, I would highly recommend doing so. At peak times the cue can take a bit, otherwise there isn't much of a wait unless you ordered, say a sausage and egg croissant which needs to be prepared. Such a croissant is quite good, BTW. They used to have an awesome stamp card-based loyalty program, I liked it but I can't say for sure if it's still available. The staff are friendly l, moreso considering the slightly early hours involved. The coffee/ espresso drinks are very good; I have yet to be disappointed with a drink from here.* Don't forget a spill preventing sticker for the lid if you're driving. It's convenient, and quick as long as I watch out for those times with long cues. If I see one, it may be quicker to just come back in 10-20 minutes, or head to Moka (or maybe BK - is there another Coffee drive-thru in the area?) *Full irrelevant disclosure: l'm not generally satisfied with coffee or any brewed drink from Madison due to the highly alkaline water used here. Came here in an extremely hot day... Tried the atomic freeze, which is like blended iced mocha, but with a very creamy texture and that amazing smell of tiramisu! They have a lot of seats, and you'll immediately fall in love with the very relaxing atmosphere. The staff are so friendly that you easily start chatting with them while you wait for the coffee. I have ADHD, so I have a lot of sensory issues which inhibits me from studying at certain places, including where I live sometimes. For some reason, the upstairs part of cargo coffee is the sweet spot for me. I'm a computer science student, and I've put in a lot of hours up there and gotten a lot done. This place is a great atmosphere. I think it's just the right amount of noise, and there's always a good amount of people there working, studying, or hanging out with friends. Yet, it's never "overwhelming" as many coffee shops are to me. I think there's enough space where you can choose to be susceptible to the overwhelm, or not. Im not picky about coffee, I just get a mocha or root beer if it's too late for coffee. It's good. I mostly care about sensory stuff, in which case, Cargo is top tier for me. Really thankful this place exists, and I can thank them for my good GPA! read more

I'm on cloud 9 right now. I needed (yes, needed, don't judge me) a quick BLT. I was multitasking on my short break from work. I gave them a call when I was three minutes' drive away, they got my order ready in a flash, I picked it up from the drive-thru, and it was SO GOOD. I am totally digging the atmosphere at Cargo. Bright, airy, lots of different seating and lighting options, and super-rad Picasso-influenced art by kids on the back wall (at least for now). They also have perks like free covered parking and a drive-thru window. Solid. Being a coffee shop, they unsurprisingly have a coffee-heavy drink menu. As someone who can't have caffeine, I wish they had a few more caffeine-free cold drink options in the summer, but I can't hate - I didn't go to a juice bar, I went to a coffee shop. I did snag some lunch on my last visit, though, and it was tasty and filling. I went with the Green Wrap, which was impressively green and featured extra-crunchy vegetables. The homemade hummus was really hearty and didn't squish out with every bite. It also came with a giant pickle spear that I didn't expect and was pumped to see on my plate. Bonus! read more

I stopped here as part of the Caffeine Crawl last weekend. The space is very inviting and clean. Lots of different areas for studying, reading, or conversing with friends. The new Cargo Coffee location is a wonderful addition to the near East side. It retains all the positive attributes of their Park Street location (friendly service, bold roasts, geographic theme) in a new vibrant setting. In addition to their flavorful bold, aromatic coffees, this location offers pastries, a small lunch menu, wine and beer. The location offers a variety of seating options. You can socialize with friends sitting in the comfy chairs and sofa in the entry area with high ceilings and illuminated with natural light from two story glass windows. If you need to turn out a project, grab an Atomic Roast and head over to the dimly lit upper deck area. Things I liked: * Free, fast wi-fi. Even though the place was packed with an army of laptop-toting students, the performance of my wi-fi connection did not suffer. * Drive through window * The pleasant, efficient staff thoroughly explained the different blends offered that day to this appreciative first time visitor. * Free parking in the entire first floor of the parking garage (enter on Livingston Ave) * The loyalty punch card works also works at the other Cargo Coffee location on Park and Ground Zero on Willy Street. Ten punches gets you a free drink. Things I didn't: * A small quibble, but I would like to see more sofas and comfy chairs. The availability of free parking on the near east side will definitely make Cargo Coffee East a location I frequent often. read more
