Same as the Oakland location, Mujiri has the absolute best prices in Bay Area for the quality of fish you get. The Hayward location even has more specials on their menu! I personally found the service to be more attentive and having a much shorter wait time as well. If I lived closer to Hayward, I'd probably opt to come here more often than Oakland. However some cons from this visit were that the ikura was way too salty and the table was freshly wiped with likely dirty water and it smelled rancid the entire time we sat there. This is the place to go if you're looking for quality omakase with the best price you can get in the bay. Their 7 piece omakase where you get to choose which 7 pieces you want with options to upgrade is unbeatable. I love being able to customize and the set also comes with a maki roll. I've also tried their other rolls and dishes and all were delicious and filling. I love that they season their rice and that the sushi comes out at the perfect temperature. Their staff is also super helpful and friendly. The only downside is parking can be tough. There's street parking and a lot across the street. Went to the Oakland location in July 2024 for our anniversary so we thought we try out their newer location in Hayward for Valentine's day. Same as Oakland zero complaints and all the stars to the food, chef and all staff! For Valentine's they had oysters (not sure if it's always on their menu), tasty! I'm a big oyster fan, and i definitely know fresh when i taste. Per usual, all sushi melted in your mouth. With the holiday, they had a shorter time, only 1hr, but again. Was not a problem. We finished just in time. Maybe a couple of minutes later, but we did not get kicked off our table as i thought i would lol. So extra kudos for their kindness - we did hurry to get up, as for courtesy since we were told. Highly recommend. Either location. Just go to Mujiri for fresh sushi! We were bummed out as many appetizers we wanted to order were unavailable. The food is extremely fresh ~ However, as many places are, they work better as appetizers. I still love the Oakland location first and foremost with the Ross across the street and homely street vibes. The price for the tamago was quite hefty compared to some of the raw fish nigiri options. You would think the fish would cost more than egg! As my husband and I was working through the meal, one of the sushi chef came by and asked if he could swap our uni nigiri out. I thought that was really odd. Was the original uni he served bad? What if we ate that before he could swap it out? Was kinda sus. But the uni he swapped was delicious nonetheless. Anyways, we got the bill and to our surprise, they charged us $1.50 each for water. WTF??? We did not order any special water nor did then menu state they would charge for water. For the price we paid for this meal, it seemed like they were tryna nickel and dime people. In downtown Hayward, it doesn't look like much from the outside, but once we entered the restaurant, we were met with a welcoming cozy atmosphere, excellent service, and very delicious sushi. We got the nigiri combo (2 orders), and the toro trio, and loved every bite. The very fresh fish had an impeccable texture and taste, most notably the Amber Jack and Arctic Char. The rice was seasoned expertly, so that you can pop each one into your mouth and get a symphony of sushi goodness - flavor without adding anything more to it - with the perfect amount of fresh wasabi already integrated. Each fish type was accentuated with its own complementary flavors (subtle citrus notes, smokiness... yum)! We went back to Mujiri last night, because a friend of mine hadn't been before. First off, I have to say that Ramsey and the staff at Mujiri are great! They're skillful, thoughtful, helpful, attentive, and all around great people! The space is on the small side, but it lends to a more intimate setting. The selection changes based on seasonal availability. And you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. We ordered a carafe of sake (Drunken whale), a side of sushi rice, sashimi order and a nigiri order. The sake was a great pairing with the sushi, and all items were amazing! HANDS DOWN some of the most affordable and good quality nigiri you can get in the Bay Area! An unassuming little shop (I recommend getting a reservation!). Tables are limited, so frankly - don't come with more than 4+ people... You MUST order the Nigiri Combo when you come in. The fish quality is top notch, especially for the price. You have the option to do "Chef's Choice" or you can choose which proteins you want. I found this so unique and fun. I chose all of my favorites: Hotate, Iwana, Toro, and Kanpachi. I was pleasantly surprised by the Kurodai (Black Snapper) too! Torched and savory. Must order!! The Ocean Trout ws just okay. The Sake & Shiso Hosomaki was SO ADDICTING. I could eat a dozen of those and never get tired of it. The wasabi in everything was perfectly scattered as well. One downside for me what the wait time for food. After we ordered, we waited about 45 minutes for our sushi to come out. I respect it though, it takes a while to perfect nigiri. They are busy even from online orders so be ready. Highly recommend. We booked reservations for 3 and were seated immediately. All 3 of us ordered a nigiri combo with 1 spicy tuna maki. We ordered a tofu appetizer and seaweed salad. All delicious. You can pick 7 different nigiri with no repeats. Combo also comes with tuna maki. Word of caution.... it takes a while to get your combo. We waited 35 minutes for the combo to arrive. I even asked the waiter if the food is on its way. But let me tell you, it was 100% worth it. Each piece was prepared in a different way. The temperature of the fish matched the rice which made me appreciate the time it took to prepare the combo. My favorite nigiri was the one that was torched and the scallop. Amazing sushi in a cozy, unassuming spot in Hayward. There appeared to be just two people working the entire place, so it can take a bit to get your food. But the sushi is absolutely worth the wait. We got the sashimi platter and the nigiri platter which comes with a roll and two additional rolls. Everything was fresh and delicious. The nigiri platter let's you choose a set of 7 nigiri options. The premium options can be added for an extra charge. They serve the sushi on bamboo mats on a bed of ice keeping them cold and refreshing. Not sure what happened with the service but I definitely don't remember it being this bad. We came in around 12pm on Saturday and there were a bunch of 2-seater tables available, even a 4-row seater facing the chef that was apparently reserved. We are a party of 3. A party of 2 was occupying a 4-seater and they just sat down as well, and none of their food arrived. I don't think it's bad service for the waiter to kindly request if the party of 2 would mind switching to a 2-seater; if they refused, fine with us. But the waiter did not offer this gesture. Not even moving an extra seat to a 2-seater. We then asked if we can split up (2+1) and take 2 of the 2-seaters. And the response I got was a hard 'No'. No explanation to why not. Just 'No' and looked at me like I was crazy. We figured whatever we'll just wait and guess what, when we finally got seated at our 4-seater, those 2-seaters were STILL available. Way to go in filing up your restaurant. And remember the 4-seater 'reservation' facing the chef? Turned out it was for a party of 2, which again, could be easily moved to another seat to accommodate us. The only reason this is getting a 2 stars is solely for the Nigiri. And the waiter opening the door for us on the way out. For $25, I think it's still a steal. But forget it we're not coming back or recommending this to anyone. read more
