I came here for my little sister's birthday with a group of four, and I really wanted to love it. The concept is super cute, we all liked the storybook theme, but it feels a bit unfinished overall. Seating wasn't the best. We were in the back on a bench and table setup that felt uneven and uncomfortable. The space also echoes a lot, and with the music being very loud, it was hard to have a normal conversation. Between that and the music selection, it was tough to really enjoy the vibe. Now for the food....mixed reviews. The appetizers were actually really good. The meatballs and risotto balls were both standouts and something I'd definitely order again. The pizzas, though... not so much. The fungi (mushroom) pizza sounded amazing on paper but was a huge letdown. It had almost no flavor, and the mushrooms weren't seasoned or cooked well at all. It mostly went to waste. The other pizza we tried, a spicy pork option, was much better. Not amazing, but definitely enjoyable; just a little too spicy for my son. Drinks were also a miss. Our waiter was actually very honest and warned us that the cocktails weren't great, and unfortunately, he was right. The drink we originally wanted was out of stock, and the ones we ended up trying (including a mocktail) were pretty bad. In hindsight, we should've just stuck to wine or something simple. I will say our waiter was great, friendly and upfront, which we appreciated. Overall, I think this place has potential and I love seeing something new like this in downtown Hayward. It just needs some refining. I'd consider going back for apps, but I'm not rushing to return.

    Happy hour Pepperoni pizza

This is a review for happy hour on a Sunday. This new restaurant is located in down town Hayward. There's is limited parking in front of Storybook and ample free parking lots in the nearby vicinity. We were greeted as soon as we entered and we chose to sit outside because it was a nice day. We ordered drinks and pizza from their specialty menu/happy hour. The drinks were reasonably priced and tasted great. They do not skimp on alcohol in the drinks. The pizza was delicious and cooked well. I was a big fan of the type of fries they serve. I will definitely be back to try more things off their regular menu.

We had a nice date night here. This restaurant looks so different than pizza house. It's bright and spacious with a back game room and patio. The servers were very attentive. All the food was pretty good. We didn't try any appetizers but loved the pizza and pasta. All the cocktails were well done as well. I think the portions of the pizza could be a little bigger but I just have a big appetite.

le sigh Want to like this place and want this place to succeed but man every time we go to this place they miss the mark w the food and especially w the service. They do have GREAT cocktails here though. We've been here a few times bec we want to keep giving them a chance and try other food items but it's not getting better Food wise - we've had the "kale" ceasar which didn't have kale, it has spinach. The burratta salad which needed more umph. The catch of the day - so disappoint w bland veggies and small portion of fish. And the pepperoni pizza is just meh. We somehow get seated in the same spot in every visit and get the same server which is sooo bad. He never once checks on us. He takes a while to take order despite them not being busy. Not attentive at all and feels like always in a rush. So sad. Their cocktails are great. So next time we comeback, if we will, we will most likely request to sit on the bar and come for cocktails only.

Storybook is such a vibe! The restaurant is huge with bright decor! We came for happy hour and had a great time. We had the pepperoni pizza which was nice and hot with a chewy type crust, the garlic fries are really good here and the chicken strips. We also had the Greek salad which was good and had cut up olives in every bite. The arancini was different with that honey sauce but nice and gooey. They do have a back patio which is cute and beautiful on a nice summer day but we opted to sit near the big open windows inside the restaurant which was a vibrant and refreshing experience. As for the service, it was good but I believe we came in during change of shifts or something so we had to hunt down different people but overall I would be back for the happy hour for sure!

    Funghi pizza

Came here for Valentine's Day dinner and there were still tables available for a 7pm reservation time. There was a special menu, but I opted to just order from the regular menu and selected the Funghi Pizza. The portion of the pizza with toppings on it was really delicious, but I felt that there was too much crust. I would've enjoyed the crust more, but it did not have a lot of flavor so it was like eating plain bread. The service was a bit inconsistent. We had our waters refilled really quickly initially, but when we actually ran out of water, nobody came around to refill it. Upon being seated initially, there were also a lot of crumbs on the chairs which I had to try to wipe off with my hands while the hostess just looked at me. The interior is nicely decorated, but seemed to lack a cohesive theme. The lighting and bare high ceilings made the dining area feel more like a warehouse than an intimate dining experience that I would've expected. The background music was also really loud which made it difficult to hear. Tables are spaced apart well so that I can't hear other groups which is a plus. Overall, I had an OK experience here. I would actually be open to coming back if Storybook made a few improvements. I think this place has a lot of potential and could be the next place to go viral with some adjustments.

I have been waiting for Story Book to open, and I finally got my chance to visit and check it out. As you walk up the entire front entrance is open window dining. Super beautiful. The entire dining area is open, huge, clean and very well presented. I had my choice of where to sit and enjoy my experinece, as I was the early bird on a Sunday (make it an Easter Sunday). So I was lucky to be early and have a choice of where to sit. I toured the outside patio, and the dining area but opted for the super beautiful area up front with the open area, open window dining. It was beautiful. I was super appreciative when the owner greeted me as I enjoyed my wine and garlic knots. He told me a little history and the story of the Story Book. I thought that made this visit so special. I am making plans to visit again during the next week with my SO, I want to try so many things on the menu, including several handmade cocktails. I love this new spot in Hayward, it's just what the town needed. Delicious food, spectacular service and a beautiful place to enjoy it in. Thank you Story Book, I will be back!

Chickpea and vegetable tangine with a side of za'atar flatbread
    Molly L.

We came here on a weekday evening and we have to say we weren't super impressed with the food. My partner ordered a pasta dish with duck while I ordered the chickpea and vegetable tangine. We also ordered the risotto balls as an appetizer. Overall, we thought the food was very bland. The pasta dish had fresh, soft pasta, but the duck had very little flavor and the pasta could have used some more cheese on it. My chickpea and vegetable tangine dish also had little flavor and we both put salt on our dishes because we felt like it was missing something. The za'atar flatbread that the tangine came with though had a good amount of chewiness to it and also some crispness to it as well. It was really good flatbread. The service was fine, but honestly the restaurant was so busy that it did take awhile to get a menu and our orders taken. This place has high ceilings and is very large. There's even a back arcade area where you can order food, though there was no one using it at the time. The front windows are wide open though and so if there's anyone smoking nearby, you might be able to smell it. This place does get loud when there are parties hosted in the front as well. We did make a reservation but they saw us a few minutes earlier. Overall, this place is fine, but not sure we'd come back regularly.

I liked the vibes of the place a a lot! It's a cute spot with a nice theme. The food was tasty. The wine menu is a little limited and they didn't have the wine that was on their happy hour menu due to supply issues. The service was not the best. It was slow and relatively empty so I was surprised. We had to keep reminding them about things we'd asked for and water. The dessert was divine though.

    Mushroom risotto
    Jaime C.

My friends and I had dinner here a few weeks ago. The inside is really nice and inviting, cool decor. The food was pretty good, I got the mushroom risotto. I also liked the cocktail menu and that they were very reasonably priced! However service was really slow, fortunately we had a lot to catch up on and weren't in a rush. We didn't check out the back arcade area, I just briefly saw it when going to the restroom. I would definitely eat here again, but menu isn't very kid friendly so it might be awhile until I can.

So this restaurant just opened up in Dowtown Hayward and I think because it's so fresh I'm hopefully next time I go the food is a bit better. The staff is great, very attentive. But the food was a bit mid. I had some pepperoni pizza and it wasn't that great. Maybe it's not their speciality and hey that's ok. I'm still willing to come back and try other food they have. The Over the Garden Wall mocktail (only one of two that they have) was really delicious though that I almost got another one. The vibe of the restaurant was not chaotic like I thought it would be, great vibe for Downtown.

Restaurants love giving an odd number of arancini so you have to fight over the last one hahaha. They were very yummy!

So excited to have another cute and classy place to go to in Downtown Hayward. It's just casual enough for any occasion dinner/happy hour/celebration but just a notch above enough to also have a nice date or special occasion celebration here. There are multiple areas of the restaurant that are perfect for special occasions-there's a somewhat private area in the back with arcade games and more tables-perfect for a birthday party. While we were there tonight the back area was reserved for a birthday party, but there was also a long table celebrating a birthday in the regular dining area as well. We also saw some areas with booths/couches that also looked really nice for a small special occasion dinner group. I was really happy to see that they have Happy Hour from 4-6pm, and includes weekends! I had no idea until we walked in for an early dinner tonight and the host let us know we made it during happy hour! From the happy hour menu, my husband had a pepperoni pizza ($15) and I had the house margarita ($10). From the regular menu, I had the arancini ($18) and duck confit tagliatelle ($29). Everything tasted great! The pizza was saucy with spicy pepperoni and the crust was perfectly airy crispy and chewy. The arancini was very cheesy and crispy, the honey agrodolce was a nice touch. Duck confit tagliatelle was perfect with plenty pieces of shredded duck and pasta with the perfect texture! I'm excited to come back again and hope to continue seeing Storybook thrive in Downtown Hayward.

This restaurant is absolutely lovely! We were just walking by and we decided to stop to try this cute, newer restaurant in Hayward. The service was really friendly. We ordered salad, steak, lamb, pasta, and dessert. The salad was fantastic. The steak and lamb were cooked perfectly. The pasta was the highlight of the meal. It was absolutely delicious. The bread pudding was good too. The only minor critique I have is the presentation of the lamb could have been a little nicer. But that is a very minor criticism. This restaurant is awesome, and I highly recommend it.

My go-to is the triple kebab (which you can customize), and I'm partial to their shami (ground beef), chicken, and chapli (beef patty). The meat is succulent and incredibly well-seasoned, with the shami being a standout...definitely the kind of dish you don't judge by its cover! This dish is served on a bed of rice and small salad. The rice is cooked well. I have also tried several of their appetizers, and my favorites are the samosas and borani banjan (eggplant), though the bolani are also great, and the serving size is enough to feed a small army. The samosas are a nice departure from traditional samosas I am accustomed to, especially at India restaurants. The ones here are large, flatter (almost like an empanada), and not the slightest bit greasy. You can tell they make these fresh. The banjan have a nice acidity and a tasty cream/tomato sauce they are tossed within. The bolani can be prepared with either leeks or potatoes (or ask for a combo!) and are served with a cream dipping sauce. I feel that everything here is a good value, with the triple kebab coming in at $25, and the appetizers all coming in at $10-$15. You will not leave hungry.

The beef kabob was tasty however, the meat serving sizes for the kabob plate was quite small.

The owner of this establishment contacted Yelp to remove my original review, claiming my experience was not legitimate. I am reposting my review with screenshots showing that | placed an online pickup order and visited the restaurant. The photos are timestamped from 2/3/2026. Transparency matters, and attempting to discredit a real customer experience instead of addressing it reflects poorly on the business. Flagged Content: Order: Chicken Shawarma Plate Total: $17.55 Location: 217 W Winton Ave, Haywara, CA 94544 I am extremely disappointed with this purchase. The food was not good at all. The chicken was clearly not fresh--it tasted old and seemed like it had been reheated in the microwave, possibly from a day or two earlier. The side dish with garbanzo beans also tasted old. The pita bread was cold and not even warmed, which shows a lack of care. The service was just as bad. When I arrived, the front door was locked even though the restaurant states it opens at 11:00 AM. I arrived around 12:35 PM. A gentleman eventually came to open the door. When I told him my name and that I was there for a pickup order, he seemed completely confused. A young lady then stepped in and asked about my order, and I had to show her proof that I placed it online. Apparently, my order was not in their system despite my confirmation. She told me my food would be ready in three minutes. I was on my lunch break, and there was no apology for the door being locked or for my order not being ready. I ordered ahead specifically because I was on a time limit. The fact that it was ready in "three minutes" made it very clear that the food was reheated rather than freshly made. The ambiance was also unpleasant. The restaurant has large chandeliers trying to appear elegant, but it doesn't work. Chairs were stacked on top of tables, so dining in wasn't even an option. There was also a strong smell of floor cleaner throughout the restaurant, as if they were trying to cover up another odor. Overall, I do not recommend this place. The food quality, service, and overall experience were very disappointing. This was a waste of money. I ended up throwing the food away because I was worried about food poisoning and didn't have time to return it since I was on my lunch break. I will not be coming back.

To that I simply have to give my respects and give them a shout out. Very calm and relaxing space. Many regulars walking in picking up take-out food. There's a very kind and soft paced table service here that just reminds me of cute and quaint bistros/cafes from the days gone by. Actual dialogue between servers and patrons, questions answered, smiles passed along. A huge gap from QR code ordering and avoidance of interaction that is trying to be normalized from here on out. We ordered a couple of bottled beers, nothing craft brewed-like, just ordinary Euro/Mexican selections. I'm not as rigid as I once was, so just a good clean lager with a meal and some water is very welcoming to me. They brought nice beer glassware and asked if we wanted it poured into a glass. Sure ain't gonna turn that down, especially since it was already there. It did fit with the nice silverware, cloth napkin and candlelit table. Yet nothing was stuffy and formal, just casual locals out for a good time. Kofta Wrap ($19/4*) This wasn't mine but I did taste a piece of the kofta kebab. Theirs is a beef/lamb mix and is well mixed, almost like a firm meatloaf texture, versus a grilled burger texture. It was a good basic kofta, spiced moderately so not strong but also not bland. The inside also has a lot of lettuce, onions and cucs with a tangy yogurt sauce. I did taste a big hint of mint in my bite which I'm assuming are big hits of herbs with the salad and not the kofta itself. And it was wrapped nice and tight with even distribution so every bite got every element. I look for that in every wrap whether a burrito, med wrap and even stuffed pitas. Beef Shawarma Plate ($20/4.5*) Pretty heavily spiced, where you can feel the texture of the warming spice paste in each bite. A little strong but at least it gave you ride to another culture. Properly shaved pieces where the meat texture was still there and nothing like processed gyro meat. Served with yellow rice and an awesome salad with a tangy dressing. I especially loved the tangy green chutney that was so vibrantly herbaceous, a mint and cilantro punch that brightened the spice ladened shawarma. And I also loved the grilled tomatoes and onion garnish on top of the shawarma, just gave it a nice chef's touch. Mansaf ($25/5*) I have never tried this but as soon as I saw it, I had to try it. I was told it was probably Jordan's most famous dish. Super tender cubes of lamb, with a touch of fat on some pieces which I love. Totally swimming in this glorious creamy sauce made of dried yogurt and tumeric. The sauce was mild (spice wise), quite tangy with a noticeable milky flavor. Served again with rice but this time topped with toasted almond slivers, which added a nice texural contrast. I was also told that this was usually made with bone-in lamb, but think they did it this way to make it more restaurant friendly, maybe even American friendly. But I was just imagining if this would have been a bone-in lamb shank, I would have loved it even more. Great dish! Still have to try their extensive kabob offerings and an assortment of their mezzes whether falafels, hummus and other dips. Lots of work yet still ahead of me, but I just know that this is gonna be a smooth and fun ride. Bet.

As with most gyro places, the schwarma slices are the highlights and Nick The Greek has a good beef/lamb schwarma that came with crispy ends in my most recent order. The combo of fresh veggies, fries, and schwarma made each bite a hearty one. The crunch from the lettuce paired well with the soft pita bread holding the whole thing together. With each order, you're able to request add ons for additional costs but for the amount you pay, you'd expect a generous portion of the add on but it doesn't seem to be the case. A request for "extra fries" amounted to about 6 strings and tomatoes and olives were almost non-existent. Fortunately, I was able to cover most of the costs with a coupon code so it wasn't too big of a deal that there were less toppings or things completely missing. To go with my gyro, I also ordered a side of their Nick's Fries which are just fries topped with meat, sauces, and some green onions. I opted for the beef/lamb schwarma and it was certainly a meal in itself at this point. The fries still had some rigidity but because of the sauces, they were pretty soaked. The flavors were still enjoyable and the giant slices of meat made for a very filling side. I also got a cup of their strawberry dragonfruit juice and it was refreshing. A bit sweet but the tartness was good balance and quenched my thirst as I was consuming the savory meal. The staff were welcoming and quick to fulfill the order. I had ordered take out and everything was ready by the estimated time and packaged nicely - no messes by the time I got home to enjoy the meal. It definitely helped to have such a large parking lot which made the quick pick up that much quicker. For those looking to dine in, they have plenty of tables inside the shop and a few outdoors if you're keen on soaking in some sun. Overall, Nick The Greek satisfies that Mediterranean craving with their menu of pitas, plates, bowls, salads, and fries. The staples you'd expect like schwarma and falafel are made well here and the prices are reasonable for the quality and amount of food you get. With their mobile app, you may earn rewards that can be redeemed for more food so if you're a frequent visitor, you'll benefit greatly! If you're looking for a quick lunch or early dinner, Nick The Greek rarely has a line and can get your food ready to go and packing in your belly in no time.

Baklava is one of my favorite desserts, but the flaky pastry portion was pretty tough and hard, and came straight off the pistachio layer. The chicken pieces in the wrap were nice and chunky, that was the best part of it. Usually Doordash orders would at least include utensils and napkins in the bag it's delivered in. My order had no napkins included. Despite the mess, it was tasty and satiating. But I don't think I'll order from here again.

Plus, I was craving Persian food, specifically a solid kubideh. Their reviews were good, but their kubideh and chicken plate was over $20+. Persian food is usually on the pricier side, but spending that much on a lunch plate feels excessive. So, I went with the kubideh wrap for $13 which price-wise was more palatable. It came with a side salad and seemed like a good value. It took a little longer than expected, which was fine. But the flavor wasn't there, and I was hoping for the depth of flavor I get from South Bay favorites like Yas in SJ. I unwrapped the whole thing just to taste the kubideh on its own, but it was bland. Like plain ground beef. I had to use the salt and pepper from my utensils packet to give it something, unfortunately. On the bright side, the salad, a Persian-style cucumber and tomato mix, was excellent. The lavash was soft and fresh, and the other ingredients were solid. But the kubideh, the star of the show, was underseasoned. For me, kubideh is the test of a Persian spot. If that's lacking, I'm not coming back. Maybe they had an off day, but based on what I had, it just didn't hit.

We all ordered shwarma plates except my husband who ordered a wrap. The shwarma plate was very nice - it came with a small salad, rice, and shwarma. I like that they provided garlic sauce, salad vinaigrette, and your choice of cilantro or harissa sauce. I tried all of them and they were all good. For Filipinos, actually, this fits the palate very well - there is seasoned meat with rice. What else do you need in life? The salad is just a healthy bonus. My husband really enjoyed his wrap and he'd be interested in returning. The wrap used a flour tortilla...but the filling was very good. Even my parents who don't like to venture too far from Filipino-American food were interested in returning, especially because the location is nearby Popeye and Seafood City. We came in around lunch time on a Saturday, and there were some people eating inside and outside. Staff were very friendly and the seating area was clean.

The plate had a generous serving of rice and hummus - the chicken was tender and flavorful. The wrap was crispy on the outside, the Achilles chicken was very tasty as well. The falafel was a disappointment though as it was not fully cooked. There was a slight raw taste to it. Took the food to go and the server was very cheerful.
