Came on a flyer hearing there was going to be live music and was pleasantly surprised at this new restaurant in DT Hayward. Really was taken aback by how spacious the venue is, both indoor and outdoor patio seating that is a backyard vibe. This Greek Italian restaurant has super reasonable prices and tasty food with a generous happy hour offering making it a great place for a date night, after work meet up, or group outing. The service was really good and host was friendly. They had live cumbia entertainment on a Friday night and it made for a festive ambiance. Tried the Greek fries and BBQ Dry rub wings. Both are generous offerings and shareable for two which was perfect before getting up and dancing in the back patio area. The food was good, we particularly liked the hangar steak with the fries, I wish they added more of the chimichurri sauce. Had a Greek salad which was fresh but the dressing was the worse I've seen. Ultra acidic - more acidic than my wine. Red wine was kept at high temperature and above 70 degrees which made for an acidic / rancid wine. Pinot noir was almost cooked and shouldn't be served. Sauvignon Blanc was better - kept at lower temperature - bubble gum on the nose and pineapple finish on the palate with short tail (NZ coast which meant I was expecting more fruit and even less tannins although this was pretty smooth) and the bartender was great with the margarita customization. Suggest to update wine glassware and use stemware with a bigger bowl for both red and white wines. I made my wine heat up just by holding it and the glasses are so small the wine can't breathe and I cannot appreciate the bouquet which is over half of the enjoyment of wine. read more

Storybook is one unique restaurant in downtown Hayward. In the front is a huge, modern dining room and bar (with an open view into the kitchen), and in the back are an arcade with pay-per-play machines and an outdoor patio. Broadly speaking, the menu is Italian-influenced, featuring a variety of appetizers, pizzas, and pastas. One of my favorite dishes was the Mezze Plate, a colorful spread of hummus, burrata, olives, cucumber, roasted eggplant/peppers/cherry tomatoes, and seasonal fruits (blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, grapes), served with pizza bread on the side. My favorite element was definitely the creamy burrata, perfect for spreading onto the chewy flatbread! Next, the Meatballs were an iron skillet of four beef and pork meatballs in a surprisingly spicy tomato sauce, made with Calabrian chili and pecorino; and the Little Gem Greek Salad was a mixture of little gem lettuces, cured shallots, feta, olives, and cucumbers, all tossed in an acidic red wine vinaigrette. From their pasta selection, the White Cheddar Mac & Cheese was an extremely creamy, decadent mixture of orecchiette pasta in a Vermont white cheddar sauce, topped with breadcrumbs, which had been baked to a crispy texture. Finally, one of the highlights of this restaurant is their pizza selection, and the Funghi came with a generous amount of roasted mushrooms, along with a porcini and roasted garlic sauce, fontina, provolone, mozzarella, black truffle pecorino, and thyme. Came for Father's Day lunch at 1:15pm. The place was pretty empty, but I think there were more people than it felt like because the restaurant is actually pretty big. There's the main dining area, an arcade, and then a beautiful patio in the back. Love the tall rubber plants! The inside decor is cute. Where the Wild Things are painting, under the sea mural behind the bar... the name "Storybook" is absolutely fitting. The main dining area is lit with a lot of natural light and there's a big window into the kitchen, which everyone found interesting. Our server was great, and very patient as we had a 10 party group, with a baby and we took a long time to order. We had more food than space on our table, but they were able to figure it out. Pizzas were good and the quality is definitely present. With a part of 10, 4 pizzas, and 2 orders each of garlics knots, fries, and cheese curds, we were all well fed. read more

Let me start out by saying the decor is cool. When you look around at the art on the wall, you see familiar pictures from books you may have read or had read to you as a child. There is modern whimsy when you step in the door, look at the menu and when your food and drink come to the table. I thought the menu offered variety, but was surprised when the hangar steak was offered with frites and not with an option to have pasta. I personally don't eat fries that often and would have liked to have pasta rather than fried food. The chimichurri was fresh and flavorful and the steak was cooked perfectly. Yummo! My Hubs had the Linguine Al Pomodoro and this was light and fresh. The tomatoes added a bit of acidity while the parmesan cheese added some depth. Next time I would love to get the pasta dish and add the steak to the meal for perfection. Our friends had the pepperoni pizza. How can you go wrong with pepperoni? You can't ! I have been wanting to try Storybook ever since it opened in Hayward, and I'm glad to try their truffle fries and both their pepperoni and funghi pizza during happy hour! I came here for my little sister's birthday with a group of four, and I really wanted to love it. The concept is super cute, we all liked the storybook theme, but it feels a bit unfinished overall. Seating wasn't the best. We were in the back on a bench and table setup that felt uneven and uncomfortable. The space also echoes a lot, and with the music being very loud, it was hard to have a normal conversation. Between that and the music selection, it was tough to really enjoy the vibe. Now for the food....mixed reviews. The appetizers were actually really good. The meatballs and risotto balls were both standouts and something I'd definitely order again. The pizzas, though... not so much. The fungi (mushroom) pizza sounded amazing on paper but was a huge letdown. It had almost no flavor, and the mushrooms weren't seasoned or cooked well at all. It mostly went to waste. The other pizza we tried, a spicy pork option, was much better. Not amazing, but definitely enjoyable; just a little too spicy for my son. Drinks were also a miss. Our waiter was actually very honest and warned us that the cocktails weren't great, and unfortunately, he was right. The drink we originally wanted was out of stock, and the ones we ended up trying (including a mocktail) were pretty bad. In hindsight, we should've just stuck to wine or something simple. I will say our waiter was great, friendly and upfront, which we appreciated. Overall, I think this place has potential and I love seeing something new like this in downtown Hayward. Storybook follows a namesake theme that is displayed on the walls and behind the bar. Enter to a vast open floor dining area that feels and sounds more like a cafeteria than a restaurant. Very loud in there. The long bar has a full selection of spirits. We were seated inside the 'cafeteria' area as it was getting cool outside. Out the back is a space with arcade games for the kids. Continue out the back door and you enter a spacious patio area with private sections and more open sections for hanging out and dining. Our server was very nice and attentive. She quick and efficient. I believe the cocktails are the attraction here. I tried one of their signature cocktails and it was excellent! For food we started with the Little gem Greek salad. It was a stretch to find items other than the lettuces in this salad and the red wine huckleberry dressing was very pungent to where it made both of us cough we we were not careful. The main was their Fungi pizza. We asked for them to add Italian sausage to the pizza as just the noted mushrooms seemed a bit blah... Well, even with the added spicy sausage it was still quite bland. I will say that the crust was prepared nicely! (and just a note, the Fungi pizza is the most expensive item on the menu). This is a review for happy hour on a Sunday. This new restaurant is located in down town Hayward. There's is limited parking in front of Storybook and ample free parking lots in the nearby vicinity. We were greeted as soon as we entered and we chose to sit outside because it was a nice day. We ordered drinks and pizza from their specialty menu/happy hour. The drinks were reasonably priced and tasted great. They do not skimp on alcohol in the drinks. The pizza was delicious and cooked well. I was a big fan of the type of fries they serve. Came here for Valentine's Day dinner and there were still tables available for a 7pm reservation time. There was a special menu, but I opted to just order from the regular menu and selected the Funghi Pizza. The portion of the pizza with toppings on it was really delicious, but I felt that there was too much crust. I would've enjoyed the crust more, but it did not have a lot of flavor so it was like eating plain bread. The service was a bit inconsistent. We had our waters refilled really quickly initially, but when we actually ran out of water, nobody came around to refill it. Upon being seated initially, there were also a lot of crumbs on the chairs which I had to try to wipe off with my hands while the hostess just looked at me. The interior is nicely decorated, but seemed to lack a cohesive theme. The lighting and bare high ceilings made the dining area feel more like a warehouse than an intimate dining experience that I would've expected. The background music was also really loud which made it difficult to hear. Tables are spaced apart well so that I can't hear other groups which is a plus. Overall, I had an OK experience here. I would actually be open to coming back if Storybook made a few improvements. I think this place has a lot of potential and could be the next place to go viral with some adjustments. read more

Very cute place with a cute outdoor patio area, large full bar, and small gaming room. Good place for large groups it seems. There is a parking garage near by so that makes it easy but you can also find some street parking. The service was really good. It was cute that they have a large window into the kitchen so it makes the place feel larger. The food itself overall was decent. The fries were very good to start along with a salad. The pizzas we got were decent, nothing too amazing but it seemed neopolitan style. The fluffy edges to the pizza were charred. I wish the edges were less large because I felt like there was less of the pizza areas with sauce we could eat. We came here on a weekday evening and we have to say we weren't super impressed with the food. My partner ordered a pasta dish with duck while I ordered the chickpea and vegetable tangine. We also ordered the risotto balls as an appetizer. Overall, we thought the food was very bland. The pasta dish had fresh, soft pasta, but the duck had very little flavor and the pasta could have used some more cheese on it. My chickpea and vegetable tangine dish also had little flavor and we both put salt on our dishes because we felt like it was missing something. The za'atar flatbread that the tangine came with though had a good amount of chewiness to it and also some crispness to it as well. It was really good flatbread. The service was fine, but honestly the restaurant was so busy that it did take awhile to get a menu and our orders taken. This place has high ceilings and is very large. There's even a back arcade area where you can order food, though there was no one using it at the time. The front windows are wide open though and so if there's anyone smoking nearby, you might be able to smell it. This place does get loud when there are parties hosted in the front as well. We did make a reservation but they saw us a few minutes earlier. Overall, this place is fine, but not sure we'd come back regularly. read more

So excited to have another cute and classy place to go to in Downtown Hayward. It's just casual enough for any occasion dinner/happy hour/celebration but just a notch above enough to also have a nice date or special occasion celebration here. There are multiple areas of the restaurant that are perfect for special occasions-there's a somewhat private area in the back with arcade games and more tables-perfect for a birthday party. While we were there tonight the back area was reserved for a birthday party, but there was also a long table celebrating a birthday in the regular dining area as well. We also saw some areas with booths/couches that also looked really nice for a small special occasion dinner group. I was really happy to see that they have Happy Hour from 4-6pm, and includes weekends! I had no idea until we walked in for an early dinner tonight and the host let us know we made it during happy hour! From the happy hour menu, my husband had a pepperoni pizza ($15) and I had the house margarita ($10). From the regular menu, I had the arancini ($18) and duck confit tagliatelle ($29). Everything tasted great! The pizza was saucy with spicy pepperoni and the crust was perfectly airy crispy and chewy. The arancini was very cheesy and crispy, the honey agrodolce was a nice touch. Duck confit tagliatelle was perfect with plenty pieces of shredded duck and pasta with the perfect texture! I have been waiting for Story Book to open, and I finally got my chance to visit and check it out. As you walk up the entire front entrance is open window dining. Super beautiful. The entire dining area is open, huge, clean and very well presented. I had my choice of where to sit and enjoy my experinece, as I was the early bird on a Sunday (make it an Easter Sunday). So I was lucky to be early and have a choice of where to sit. I toured the outside patio, and the dining area but opted for the super beautiful area up front with the open area, open window dining. It was beautiful. I was super appreciative when the owner greeted me as I enjoyed my wine and garlic knots. He told me a little history and the story of the Story Book. I thought that made this visit so special. I am making plans to visit again during the next week with my SO, I want to try so many things on the menu, including several handmade cocktails. I love a good pasta and I love a good drive. And I get to combine both these loves when I travel to SF to eat a delish pasta and pizza dinner. Storybook Hayward is providing me one half of the deal by offering the most delish, high quality, pasta, pizza and appetizers, but now the drive is just 10 mins. I guess I shouldn't be complaining. Went here tonight right when they open at 4. They have happy hour from 4-5pm and my group made good on that by ordering two appetizers and our drinks at special pricing. The fries were good but the Frito Misto was so yum! Perfectly coated and fried veggies with a truffle aioli, this dish was just the right amount of umami, and 'warm and cozy' for the cold weather. For mains we shared the funghi( mushroom) pizza and the duck tagliatelle. As someone who has never eaten duck I expected the meat to be gamey to my palette. So I was quite surprised when the duck and the sauce were both good! The pasta itself is made in house and you can taste the freshness. Pasta noodle good enough to eat with butter, salt, and pepper! For drinks one of my friends got a non alcoholic beverage and I had a bourbon ginger ale , so not much to write of there. The ambience, what can I say, we've needed a large, family friendly space to dine at in Hayward for some time now. It's big, it's open, it had lots of space for large family gatherings, it's has so many nooks where small and large groups can gather and just enjoy food and laughs. We came for the cumbia night and were really looking forward to it, but our first impression was disappointing. When we arrived, no one greeted us or acknowledged us. We felt completely ignored, and a warm welcome really makes a difference in the overall experience. I was scouting the venue for a potential corporate event, but unfortunately, the quality of the food and beverages fell far short of expectations. The pizza and sliders lacked flavor, and the slider buns were notably hard. Additionally, the half-pound burger was poorly shaped for assembly, lacked seasoning, had an unpleasant odor, and was served with a hair on the bun. While the fries were enjoyable, the drinks were a disappointment--the margarita was overwhelmingly harsh and the water had a distinct plastic taste. Love the interior design of the place but overall, not a restaurant I would visit again. Service was good but food was unfortunately subpar. Food (3/10) - When it comes to restaurants, food is the ultimate deciding factor for me. Unfortunately, the food at Storybook is simply not that great. We got a Greek salad and a pepperoni pizza. The greek salad had a tasteless red wine dressing; it tasted like I was biting through straight lettuce. The flecks of blue cheese added some nice touches here and there but overall, the salad was wholly bad. It's one of those salads you could make at home for better and cheaper. The pepperoni pizza was also not up to expectation. The crust was extremely doughy and felt like I was chewing through putty at times. The cheese was not properly melted onto the pizza so came off in chunks and then you were left with this extremely sweet tomato sauce. Obviously, this may be to say that the tomatoes were fresh but it was the kind of sweetness that just overwhelms your palette. Not to mention, the pizza was also partially cold when it came out. The hot honey definitely was a nice addition though and added a nice spicy, sweet flavor but overall a $3 upcharge on top of an already expensive pizza just makes a small silver lining in a sea of negatives. Price (4/10) - Compounding the subpar food, the prices are quite expensive here. It's $28 dollars for a pizza that just isn't $28 dollars worth of value. After factoring in all the additional costs (salad, tax, tip), the meal came out to $54. For a 2 person meal, you'd be better off picking something else. Service (8/10) - Wait staff was friendly. Additionally, appreciated that they came out to correct their mistake. I asked if their salsiccia was made with pork or beef to which they answered pork (one of us couldn't eat beef). Thankfully, they checked with the kitchen and told me it was a combination so avoided any unfortunate complications there! Ambiance (8/10) - Love the interior of the restaurant. Beautiful turtle mural and I liked the open kitchen. Dining area is also very spacious. They have live music in the back sometimes; did not partake though. Overall, the restaurant itself is nice but the food simply isn't up to standard. Would not visit again nor would I recommend. read more

Was greeted immediately by the host and seated even with no reservation but I would reccomend making one, I guess I just got lucky to get seated as it wasnt busy yet. The servers arent too overbearing by constantly checking and very funny and charming all while still being attentive. The seating arrangements vary from 2-8(from what I saw) and there were even some lounge spots that can seat more and even a bar area to sit if you're alone. Perfect place for a casual outting or even a cute date night. The food came out spaced out pretty well we finished our apps in time and felt the portions were enough to fill for a nice dinner. This was surprisingly great! We went for lunch. I was with a friend I haven't seen in a while so we wanted a chill quiet ambiance to just chat for a couple hours. We sat outside in their very chill quiet beautiful patio. The food was amazing! We got salads and pizza and it totally hit the mark. I also got a mimosa that was perfect! Lastly, I want to give an extra few stars to the staff. They were so kind and gentle. They knew we had never been there before and invited us to look around. Definitely worth trying! The service is phenomenally! They checked back on us so often, it was great. They are so friendly and caring. They made a napkin flower for my toddler and she loved it. The waiters and waitresses are so kind and respectful and personable. I love it. The food was delicious too. I forgot to take pics of our entrees but we had the pi,za, steak, and lamb. My toddler went ham on the truffle fries and ended up not really touching her kids menu tenders abd fries, but toddlers will be toddlers. The food was yum abd the service was great read more
