Very good food and a great value. We were part of a party of 8 and got a little bit of everything, and it was all super, esp. for the very reasonable prices. Sorry that I know nothing about Georgian food, but I know food, and on balance, this place is very good--great ingredients prepared well. We ordered about 10 dishes total, and at least 5 were "holy cow, I can't stop eating this" good. The others were all solid-to-great. We stuffed ourselves silly for $23 each including tax and tip. That was without wine (our friends' friends brought two bottles, which is apparently OK there), but even their bottle prices started on the very reasonable end of the scale. Also, their Turkish coffee is very good, but crazy big--more like 6 oz. instead of the usual teeny cup. Imagine making an 8 oz pot of espresso, pouring the whole thing into a regular-sized coffee cup, and cooking it down a bit. Then throwing in the grounds for good measure. As a certified coffee addict, I loved it, but if coffee keeps you up at night, maybe consider another beverage to go with dessert. We live a 30 minute drive away, so we could get a lot of good food with much less of a trek. Still, I think we'll be back before too long. read more

Excellent Georgian food. The eggplant with pomegranates appetizer is quite good. The entrees are pretty standard (the lamb is good quality, but not out of this world). Make sure to save room for desert -- the Turkish coffee is amazing, as is the Napoleon, which is super light and sweet and melts in your mouth. I was going to give this place three stars, but I am thoroughly impressed that a place with more than 4 consonants in a row in its name can stay in business for this long. read more

The food is Mediocre. Having lived in Georgia for several months, I was disappointed to find the food very different from the Georgian cuisine that I enjoyed. Service is very slow but waiters are friendly and helpful. Be ware of the 10% service charge that appears on your bill out of nowhere. When we asked the waiter about the charge, he explained that it was for the busgirl and separate from the expected tip. This is not standard practice for a party of two, and it was not mentioned anywhere in the menu. So, we left with a sour taste in our mouth. read more

The BEST Georgian food outside of Georgia! Everything is fresh, hand-made and authentic. The dumplings (khinkali) are a must as well as khachapuri (cheese bread). The salads are great as well and really help to balance the meal. We've been eating here every time we visit for a while now and can honestly say that EVERYTHING is always delicious. Hidden gem. The food is terrific. Everything we tried was delicious -- greek salad, bread, hacahpuri, fried khinkali, shish kebabs, potatoes. The decor was also nice and inviting. Service was really good, too. Zero complaints other than a small mix up -- a lot of people at our table ordered the same type of shish kebab so when they brought out the kebabs they put all of them on 2 plates but didn't let us know it was for all the people that ordered it. It's been about 10 years since I was in Georgia and fell in love with the cuisine...this place did not disappoint! They had all the favorites: khinkhali, khatchapuri, lobiani, & a good selection of Georgian wines! Like others have said, it may take a while to get all your food, but that's why you order appetizers (don't miss the eggplant with walnuts) and go for the experience! I really enjoyed this restaurant and brought 3 people who had never had Georgian cuisine and they all left loving it! First experience: we ordered take out food (they have no delivery) when we got there after one hour (that was pick up time), of cause they did not have it ready, we were waiting for another 45 minutes..., Worse experiance we had recently, we decided to have small birthday party in Mtkheta: Booked place in advanced, invited people, and when we got in there guess what, surprise, all places were taken. We had to go to another restaurant. Extremely unorganized. The russian guy on the phone has no pen to write orders or reservation or has very short memory. Not only that if you complain on the phone will hang up on you. If I was owner of restaurant, would not let people like him work in there. Guess what,..! We are not going in there anymore... Hailing from a small landlocked country in the volatile region of the Caucuses, Georgians have been through it all: invasions, war, the Soviet Union. Being at the center of the Eurasian thoroughfare also doesn't help much in terms of staving off foreign invaders. However, it does explain why Georgian cuisine is so varied. Mtskheta Cafe, with its alphabet soup of consonants in the name, and forlorn location under the D tracks in Gravesend (two stops from Coney Island), is a pleasant place to sample this lesser-known cuisine. Contrary to earlier reports, the restaurant is friendly to non-Russian speakers, and there is even an English menu. The kachapuri is the most famous Georgian dish in these parts, and it is not to be missed with its gooey nutty cheese, slathered between Georgian bread. The corn bread fritters added a bit of sweetness to the mix, offset by the lackluster taste of the "mixed sour" (mixed pickles of tomatoes, cabbage, and cucumber, with all three types being a bit off in the salt to sweet ratio). Mains of fried pork cubes with gargantuan wedges of potatoes, garnished with dill and sumac were both familiar and foreign, making one rethink the proposition of eating steak fries from now on with a side of sumac. Fried chicken in garlic sauce was more stew-like than expected, with a deep garlic broth that demanded to mopped up with the airy house bread. The main crowd pleaser came from humbler origins: a plate of simple beef soup dumplings (khinkali). In line with the Georgian theme, these Asian leaning bundles of goodness had thicker dumpling skins, and a meat seasoning that brought out the natural flavor of the beef along with a kick of black pepper and maybe chili. I could go back to Mtskheta Cafe and eat the dumplings with a side of Russian beer for hours. Maybe next time I will. read more

Service was friendly, we used our phones to look up items on the menu that weren't translated. We had Khachapuri flavor was similar to a calzone, salad, plate of pickled items, home made sausage that was nicely seasoned, Khinkali meat filled dumplings, lamb ribs and eggplant with walnut sauce stuffing. The only item we didn't love was a pickled sturgeon. Would definitely like to return to try some of their stews and other dishes in the future. Place had good vibe and service was good, but reason I give two stars is because the food didn't reach my expectations for the price paid. Kebabs were good, but 14 each? My head flew off from price, not flavor. Other dishes like dumplings and hachupuri were way too salty. I couldn't even eat it, so I brought it home for someone else. The Tale of the Tailless Khinkalis Why should you read my review: I was born in the capital of Georgia (Tbilisi). I know my Georgian food. Everyone in Georgia loves to cook, eat, and drink our amazing cuisine - so the later one comes pretty easy for the natives. My review is from the Tbilisian's point of view. Keep in mind that Mtskheta is only twenty minutes via car from Tbilisi - and so, in my opinion, the differences in the verities of food and taste are negligible if any at all. The food: ~$50 * Mchadi: 5/10 It was made from a different corn meal than the mchadi I am used to eating in Tbilisi. The mchadi I'm used to in Tbilisi is less gooey on the inside and the corn meal is yellow (not white), and much, much coarser. Tasted OK. * Cheese "Guda Alvanian": 2/10 Major letdown! It was definitely not the guda we know in Tbilisi. Our guda is made from sheep's milk (not cow's milk) and is of the consistency (not the taste) of crumbled blue cheese, and a yellow tint (due to the high fat content). The cheese this restaurant has served us is called Inguli. It is a cheaper cheese not unlike a very salty feta ( http://www.colchischeese.com/cheese.html I thank my friend's roommate for being the top Google ninja that she is and finding the name of the cheese). I was very disappointed with this cheese being passed of as another cheese. I love both cheeses, but the cheese that is called guda in Tbilisi tastes much better to me. It is also a rip off: for couple (~2) of ounces of cheese (~$14!). We ordered it to eat with mchadi. * Lemonade Of Natakhtari "Tarragon": 10/10 Perfect match! We had two bottles! Yum! Thanks! * Khachapuri: 7/10 Definitely not the amazing Tbilisian version, but still good. These khachapuris were made in a style that is popular in the northern, mountainous, region of Georgia where equipment and special pastry-type dough would have been scarce. This region is no where near Tbilisi or Mtskheta. It's definitely not as labor intensive as the Tbilisian version, but it was still pretty darn good. Why not give me the option of ordering the version of the khachapuri most prevalent in Georgia now? * Khinkali: 9/10 (taste) 2/10 (form) They tasted great and were quite juicy - as they should be! I had to ask for sour cream and butter to eat them with. How to eat khinkali: You have to allow the butter to melt around the khinkalis, generously sprinkle freshly ground black pepper on the top, grab the khinkali by the top protruding piece of dough, dip the khinkalis into the melted butter around them, optionally [definitely!] dip them into sour cream, bring them to your mouth, bite and suck at the same time (or you will spill the broth inside all over the place), close your eyes, put on a heavenly smile as you chew and swallow. Warning! Don't spend too long of a time with your eyes closed or the other khinkalis will definitely disappear right from under your nose. (It's optional to eat the top piece that you were holding onto with your fingers: sort of like eating a pizza crust - you can, but you don't have to.) But wait! What?! These were mutilated khinkalis! Holy crap! They cut off the ends to which you hold on to during the manipulation of the khinkali from the plate to your mouth (yes, they are meant to be eaten with your hands alone). You made a plateful of retarded-looking khinkalis because you wanted them to be prettier?! Wow! It's like filling in the hole of the bagel or making it square and then still calling it a bagel! Nuh-uh! It does not work like that! Sorry! Try again! Note on fried khinkalis: In georgian khinkali dives you fry them when they get cold as to not waste them completely Ask for the real khinkalis when you make your order - with the protruding tip on the top! The service: 5/10 Wait staff was not as alert and expectant to our needs as I would have liked - often sitting down to play with their phones (it was hard to get their attention when they became engrossed in their smartphones) and not coming up to us after serving unless I was able to get their attention (which is a strenuous exercise for a hungry man). Both of the waiters were attentive when I had their attention and they seemed to be quite polite as well. Overall experience: THREE STARS or 6/10 I do not review food often, but I thought I had the required expertize in authentic Georgian cuisine to provide you Yelpers some service and give myself an opportunity to vent. I been to this place twice. First time was amazing, a 5 star experience. Second time sucked. What was the difference you ask? Well, 1st time around it was almost empty, second time was packed. Moral of the story, come here when its almost empty and you will have good experience. And they should weather proof their windows, sitting near the window in the winter is no fun with the arctic breeze coming in. read more

We revisited this place 6 months later, on a very cold night, not hot and steamy as in August. It really is excellent - though the service charge thing I mentioned before is something you need to watch out for, but it's common in the area, it seems. You also have to buy bread on the side - something which wasn't clear before we got the bill. That eggplant appetizer is phenomenal, Kharcho soup and stewed mushrooms are very good. Some of the names and descriptions don't do justice to the type or quality of the dish. Stewed mushrooms doesn't sound appealing, for example. My wife ordered what was described as fried chicken with garlic sauce. Probably not something I would have chosen. However it turned out to be Cornish hen with a quite elaborate and delicious sauce. Some of the appetizers are large, some of the entrees are small. I suggest ordering a couple of things, then decide afterwards how much more you want. read more
